Movie: GEOGRAPHY CLUB (2013, USA)

A story about high school life as LGBTQ teens in very different stages of decisions about their lives. Caught kissing during a school sanctioned trip Russell (Cameron Deane Stewart) and Kevin (Justin Deeley) are summoned by the girl that caught them.

Kevin is deep in the closet, at a stage where though he knows his own desires he doesn't want to be seen as gay. A man with a love of football he wants only to play the game get a scholarship without his sexuality coming to light EVER. So to spend time with Russell he gets him on the football team and also ask him to deal with the girl that caught them.

She means no harm, she's a lesbian and creator of the Geography Club which mask a gay teen support group.

Russell joins the club but is still outed thanks to his selfish best friend who in effort to have sex with a girl who actually likes Russell. When he declines her advances she calls him the f-word making fliers hanging them all over school.

The next day he is kicked off the football team by Kevin and his homophobic teammates.

While Russell decides to take the "Geography Club" public. Kevin digs his feet in about staying in the closet.

There are several people that come to support the new Gay Straight Alliance. Even Russell's asshole best friend but Kevin is a no show. Ending their secret relationship permanently.

My Favorites (Gay Themed Movies)

Movie: LATTER DAYS (2004, USA)

This movie will forever be one of my all time favorites. It was a low budget film written and directed by C. JAY COX. And it dealt with some serious subjects such as suicide attempt, conversion therapy, unaccepting parents and finding yourself.

The film boasted big name for such a low budget project such as Jacqueline Bissett, Mary Kay Place, Amber Benson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Rob McElhenney and Erik Palladino

But as good as they were I think the movie went to the newbie leads of Steve Sandvoss as Elder Aaron Davis and Wes Ramsey as Partyboy Waiter Christian Markelli.

The story was about a Mormon missionary leaving Pocatello, Idaho to go on his 2 year mission. Living with 3 other boys/men that were out to tell LA about Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

Elder Davis (Aaron) meets and is enamored with neighbor partyboy and sexually promiscuous Christian Markelli. Christian makes a bet with his friends he can bed one of the Mormons but when he gets close to Aaron almost winning the bet. Aaron calls him out. This affects Christian as he falls for the Mormon missionary. But after Aaron and Christian are caught kissing

Aaron is sent home to Idaho for excommunication in more ways than just religion as his mother and father basic Shun him leading him to slit his wrist. He survives (but you don't know that right away) only to be placed in a facility to fix his affliction of homosexuality. Believe it or not it ends somewhat happy. Aaron and Christian are reunited but no closure on rather or not Aaron's family accepted him. I'm guessing not. But it was still a damn good movie.

Something I didn't know at first. The screen play was adapted into a book by T. Fabris and published by Alyson Publications and France did a version called La Tentation d'Aaron (The Tempation of Aaron)

But sadly Steve Sandvoss has quit acting roughly after 2010 and became a farmer. Noble profession but given the chance with his talent in LATTER DAYS he could have been a household name. But that's just my opinion.

Movie: BEAUTIFUL THING (1996, ENGLAND) Continued

At the conclusion of the movie Jamie (Glen Berry) & Ste (Scott Neal) prepare for an evening together at the gay bar. Ste is still hiding it from his father but Sandra is fully aware. Still coming to terms with her son's homosexuality but being supportive.

Jamie & Ste make sure no one is around and dance together but a crowd quickly appears. Leah (Tameka Empson) and Sandra (Linda Henry) come upon the scene.

Leah along with Sandra join Jamie and Ste while dancing to Dream Alitte Dream of Me by the late Mama Cass Elliot.

In fact the entire movie featured songs by Mama Cass.

It's funny the song Make Your Own Kind Of Music fits so well with coming out. Aside from elements of abuse and bullying this turned out to be one of my favorites. Two boys finding themselves and one another.

Nobody can tell ya, there's only one song worth singing. They may try and sell ya. Cause it hangs them up to see someone like you. But you gotta make your own kinda music. Sing your own special song. Make your own kind of music even if nobody else sings along. By Mama Cass Elliot.
