Fue un emperador romano nacido en abril del año 121 de nuestra era. Gobernó desde el año 161 hasta su muerte en el año 180.

Fue el último de los llamados “cinco buenos emperadores”, y está considerado como uno de las figuras más representativas de la filosofía estoica, escuela filosófica fundada por Zenón de Citio en el año 301 a.de C.

Marco Aurelio y Lucio Vero, fueron hijos adoptivos de Antonio Pio, quien también fuera emperador romano del año 138 al 161.  Adriano, al morir su hijo adoptivo, decidió nombrar como heredero del Imperio a Antonino Pio, con la condición de que adoptara a Marco Aurelio y Lucio Vero.

Su gobierno estuvo marcado por los conflictos militares de Asia por el imperio parto y por las tribus bárbaras.

La información que se tiene de Marco Aurelio, se debe a la correspondencia que mantuvo con uno de los tutores que le había asignado el finado emperador Adriano, en donde se muestra a un hombre inteligente, centrado y trabajador, y como un hombre que daba importancia a la filosofía de la vida.

Marco Aurelio llegó a realizar pequeñas obras en griego y en latín y fue un gran admirador de la obra del poeta estoico Epícteto. Su carrera política inició como consulado en los años 140, 145 y 161 y tenia una gran influencia sobre el emperador.

A la muerte de Antonino Pio en el año 161, Marco Aurelio aceptó el trono con la condición de que su hermano Vero y él, fueran nombrados de manera conjunta Augusto, lo que motivó la lealtad de su hermano a lo largo de su vida.

Al tiempo que luchaba en las campañas de los años 170 y 180, Marco Aurelio escribió sus Meditaciones, como una fuente para su guía y mejora personal. Sus notas son representativas de una mente lógica y de un pensamiento filosófico y espiritual acorde con el estoicismo y en consonancia con grandes estoicos de la época como Séneca, Luciano, Heleia y otros. En su pensamiento la muerte es deseable ya que pone fin a todos los deseos.

Marco Aurelio muere en la hoy Viena en el año 180. Tras su muerte fue deificado y sus cenizas transportadas a Roma, en donde permanecieron en el mausoleo Adriano hasta el saqueo visigodo del año 410.

The One That Got Away
