Finn dynamics with canon characters- THIS EDITION? GLENN DOLPHMAN!

I just think that it’s fun to write and jot down my GIGANTIC DRABBLES- 

Warnings: This one is honestly just kind of cute, no warnings at all have fun <3

Alrighty, these two? They are not the best of friends, I think they just, they wouldn’t click and they were both just fine with it and never bothered-

But I also want to say that I think both of them would absolutely think the other person hates them because that is how I roll and this is my world now damnit.

Like it makes sense that they wouldn’t click, nobody is going to bat a fucking eye. The rest of the office is just sitting there like, these two? The hyperactive loud-mouthed sugar eating one, and the Old fashioned southern military adult.

MAKES SENSE.

But Finn is worried that they’ve done something annoying or that they said something when they opened their mouth before they started talking before they thought about it and THEY JUST WANT TO BE LIKED MAN.

And Glenn thinks that they fucking hate him because he said something offensive maybe? Like he doesn’t know what it is but HE PROBABLY THINKS HE DID SOMETHING! AND HE HAS NO IDEA WHAT THAT IS-

So okay lets do this,,, Mission where Finn’s camera/ security know-how is useful. 

We’re going to use the totally not overused “We have to act like a family trope!” and they have to go to some sort of museum. (Don’t ask why maybe I will decide later-) and Glenn has to be Finn’s “dad” which is like what Glenn assumes will be his worst nightmare-

Like he already thinks they hate him, and now he has to be THEIR FATHER?! IN PUBLIC???

So their all walking around and Glenn sees this like old military exhibit, I feel like it would look something similar to what he had been able to see at home, and it triggers some memory and that memory triggers A LONG MONOLOGUE-

So he’s used to the offhanded comments and sometimes just groans from his long winded “This reminds me of-“ stories from the gang- he doesn’t like them but it happens every time and it isn’t going to deter him, he’s used to Brett sometimes listening to him like it’s a something he should be taking notes on.

What he isn’t used to is Finn standing and intently listening to him with this very interested look on their face. He wasn’t even expecting it! Like, he stops speaking when he sees it and they almost look upset that he’s stopped. He can’t say anything before Reagan reminds them they have to do their, as they phrased it-

And have to mess on their phone for a little to make sure they have specific areas controlled so everything goes smoothly.

Finn has to walk away but they leave with a quick “You should talk about that stuff more! It’s really interesting sometimes!”

He sees Reagan elbow them as if to tell them, “please stop- no.” But they laugh and give him a thumbs up as their pulled to their station and he’s left with Brett who’s his son.

He doesn’t know if their being honest or fucking with him- but he likes them just a little bit more. But now It’s a respectful “Maybe” when someone asks if their friends and not just a long string of unsure “uhhhh-“ and “weeelll-“

And that on its own is an improvement, even if they aren’t going to be as great of pals as they are with the rest of the group, they are certainly getting along better every time.

Okay so- Finn? Very protective of the gang and their friends. Glenn? Also protective of the gang.

They absolutely don’t hang out, BUT! If someone has done something to anyone in the gang and Finn hears about it.

Just picture Glenn working on something at a desk, or eating lunch or something, and Finn bursts in and slams their hands down on the surface in front of them like “Someone fucked with (Insert member of the gang here)” GLENN KNOWS THIS MEANS REVENGE AND THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY GOING TK RUIN WHOEVER FUCKED WITH THEIR FRIENDS DAY.

Oops? Your suddenly listed under an army threat? Oh no! A security tape of you doing something absolutely embarrassing was shown on some monitors around Cognito??? Someone set a dye pack off in your office and now your covered in blue dye?

WHAT A SHAME!! I MEAN WHO COULD HAVE DONE THESE HORRIBLE THINGS?!?!

Sephiroth

Sexuality Headcanon: Aaaah, Sephiroth. I see Sephiroth as more or less demisexual with surprisingly (to him) possessive romantic leanings when his emotions are engaged.

Gender Headcanon: Cis male. I'm so boring with gender headcanons. XD

A ship I have with said character: All right, surprising no one, I adore Sephiroth/Tseng. Like, I just think they're so good for each other before, you know, Nibelheim. I think Sephiroth needs someone patient with him, someone willing to let him go at his own pace when it comes to figuring things out, and Tseng is very happy to let him do so.

That said, I also really like Sephiroth/Genesis. I tried my best to get some written for Sephesis Week, but I just couldn't get the dynamic I wanted on the page. I'll have to try again.

A BROTP I have with said character: Angeal and Genesis and Glenn and Lucia and Matt. I just. I want Sephiroth to have all of the friends, tbh. T_T

A NOTP I have with said character: I used to ship Aerith/Sephiroth really hard when I was young (I feel like in part because it side-stepped me out of the Aerith/Cloud/Tifa thing), but honestly, I don't know that I could ship them together anymore. It would be... It would have to be a very weird relationship, and most of what I see just tries to push it into very simple boxes.

A random headcanon: Sephiroth is quietly brilliant with all things science-related, and when Gast was still around, he was occasionally allowed to follow Reeve around the Science department as he did work on reactor designs. This lasted until Gast vanished and Hojo took over, when Sephiroth was around eight.

A year later, Reeve took the reactors from Science and started putting together what would eventually be Urban Development, and the next time he and Sephiroth saw one another, Sephiroth was a SOLDIER and Reeve was a director.

General Opinion over said character: I love Sephiroth. I have a particular soft spot for sane!Sephiroth, mostly because that's the time period I prefer to write in.

Reno of the Turks

Sexuality Headcanon: Aromantic, and definitely on the asexual spectrum. He is perfectly happy to have sex with someone-- no repulsion or anything; he just doesn't feel sexual attraction to any individual.

That said, he'd climb Rude like a tree, if Rude will let him. In no small part because he is 100% aware that Rude experiences romantic and sexual attraction, and Reno wants their partnership to be unbreakable on Rude's end.

Gender Headcanon: Cis male, but he's far less attached to the 'male' part of his identity than most of my characters.

A ship I have with said character: I... don't know that I have any happy ships with Reno, but I have plenty of absolutely heartbreaking ones.

Reno/Rude - A classic for a reason, but I suspect Rude leans a little more straight than most of my others, so it's always temporary to some degree.

Tseng/Reno - Ah, Tseng/Reno. A favorite and the bane of my existence, all at once. Basically, my default Reno and Tseng are in a D/s relationship where Tseng has carte blanche to tell Reno... anything. Because of that, I write it where Tseng would never let himself press into a sexual relationship with Reno, just because he knows that Reno cannot tell him no emotionally. For more information on this, I recommend my "Reno and Loyalty" meta that I just cross-posted from my old RP blog!

Reno/Elena/Rude - So this starts out as Reno wanting to tie Elena into the group a little more during the OG. (Curious what that looks like? I've written it here.) And when it's become a regular thing and they have a rhythm and everything, Reno... slowly pulls back. It's after AC and everything, and it's really gradual. And he doesn't pull back from them because he dislikes them or anything, he just... He knows what long term relationships are supposed to look like, and they don't usually include "someone like him," you know?

Reno/Tifa/Rude - This starts out super great, but just like Reno/Elena/Rude, will almost inevitably end with Reno pushing Rude and Tifa together and drifting off from them.

A BROTP I have with said character: Reno and any Turk, frankly.

A NOTP I have with said character: Mm. Most Tseng/Reno stuff, frankly. But not because I don't love it! I just love... specific variants of it.

A random headcanon: Reno has five younger sisters that he's responsible for. They live in the slums when he's first hired on into the Turks, but eventually, Reno gets them moved Above the Plate.

General Opinion over said character: Reno was the first canon FF7 character that I ever RPed, well over 20 years ago now. He's got a special spot in my heart, as I'm sure you can tell, given my icon is basically this icon on everything.

been another busy week so i've had less time to read than normal but sometimes that's just how it is 🤷‍♀️

finished skulduggery pleasant playing with fire and enjoyed it, of course. love whenever things that are going to be important later (which is more than i thought, actually) get casually dropped and i'm like a-ha! also have to give a shoutout to rupert degas' version of billy ray sanguine, was fucking fantastic. it hit all the right beats, definitely the way to experience the character.

the faceless ones (book three) isn't available until at least next week, so i tried a non-fiction book on magic but couldn't stand the person reading it so moved on to the girls are never gone by sarah glenn marsh. it's a YA horror about a girl who's started a ghost hunting podcast and goes up to investigate an old house in the middle of renovation and the mysterious drowning of a teenager 30 years earlier. there's also a wlw romance. it's okay so far, the insta-crush at the start was pretty egregious but other than that it's basically what i was expecting (which isn't necessarily a bad thing). the main character also has type-1 diabetes and how she handles it comes up fairly often, which is nice to see, and the love interest is of puerto rican descent.

the traitor baru cormorant continues (i'm honestly not that much further on from where i was. like i said, busy week) and i really do need to stress a content warning i sort of breezed over last time: there is on-page frequent homophobia, depictions of conversion therapy, and grappling with the direct impacts of colonialism. it's unpleasant (but well-written). bear that in mind before going in. on a lighter note it's also a book where you have to be paying attention, so maybe reading it in a way that's less spaced out than what i've been doing would be a better idea 😅

there's gonna be no new manga for a while (ace attorney investigations 2 has all of my attention rn) but! i ordered some books last week and they came the other day, so i now have (most of) jujutsu kaisen (v excited to get round to that) and the bonus mushishi story, which looks beautiful and i can't wait to read it. the picture isn't quite doing it justice

that's it for this week! things are back to normal next week, so hopefully i can get some more reading done!

I re-watched The Hobbit (1977)

This film had a huge impact on me as a kid. Some people have a connection to the LOTR books and some to the Hobbit novel, and others feel closest to the Peter Jackson Middle Earth films, but my connection to Tolkien's world is this animated film.

Arthur Rankin, Jr. And Jules Bass are the men behind many of the stop motion and animated Christmas movies we all grew up with. Needless to say, they know how to make something that stays in the memory of those who see it.

Ralph Bakshi made an animated/rotoscoped adaptation of The Lord Of The Rings in the 1970's, but while it's worth a watch, it lacked the emotion that this version of the Hobbit offers.

Rankin and Bass also made a version of Return Of The King, which I've never seen, but plan to watch.

The one thing I think has stayed with me the most is the music. All but the introduction song by Glenn Yarborough have lyrics from the book. The lyrics themselves are written by J.R.R. Tolkien himself. Which is a wonderful touch to have included.

The music has this wonderful way of fleshing out the feeling of middle earth. As does the voice work. There is something very relaxing and transfixing about the sound of this movie. For sure John Huston as Gandalf was a great choice, and the rest of the cast lends wonderful talent as well.

The animation is very simple and very much of it's time. But, this isn't exactly a bad thing. The simple animation is used to nice effect, even if it doesn't wow the eye at any point.

The story moves along quickly. It often feels more like we're hitting the main bullet points of the book. Which I have few complaints about, honestly. It's not something that'd work in a live action film, or even in an animated film made today, but it works here. You go along with it because it's never boring. Things are happening constantly and with the music backing the visuals, every bullet points is a real treat to watch. It almost plays like it knows you already know the story. You don't need to be let in on what's going on or who these characters are. You already know them and this adventure, so sit back and watch it happen.

I know it sounds crazy, but I much prefer this to Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy. I think Jackson accomplished something amazing with the LOTR trilogy, but with The Hobbit he failed to make something that felt like it was worth my time. It was a messy mix of CGI and over bloated story telling.

This version feels much more in tune with the tone of the overall world of Middle Earth and it's characters. It's dark and drab and without pretention. It tells the story of Bilbo Baggins as if it was a tale spread by word of mouth, village to village. It's greatness is in its simplicity.

This animated t.v. movie is more than worth a watch if you have an interest in Tolkien's work, the history of animation or what it was like before Peter Jackson directed The Fellowship Of The Ring. Yes, a lot of things I like about this movie can be seen as negatives, but I deeply appreciate the feel of this film and the attempt to tell one of the great stories of all time through animation.
