Cecilie, the last German Crown Princess
The last German Crown Princess, through marriage to Crown Prince Wilhelm (son of Keiser Wilhelm II), was Cecilie Auguste Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin ( 1886 – 1954.) She was the daughter of Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna and Friedrick-Franz III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Therefore, through her mother, she was a Romanov. Cecilie and her husband never got to reign in Germany because of WWI.
It has always amazed me that Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna, who always lived as she wished and at times scandalously so, could marry her children so well. However, after Cecilie married, Anastasia’s visits to her were severely restricted by the Keiser. German royalty wanted Anastasia as far as possible from her daughter.
Cecilie was probably the most beautiful European Princess of her time, with the Mikhailovichi height (she was her husband's height - 5'11 or so), beautiful dark eyes, and abundant dark hair. Unfortunately, her marriage to the German Crown Prince Wilhelm was not happy as he was constantly unfaithful to her. In between those infidelities, they managed to have six children. One of their daughters had Down Syndrome, and the child always appeared in all photographs and family events (as it should be), which at the time was not usual.
Cecilie was beloved by the German people, and her exquisite sense of fashion was copied in her youth. Most importantly, she took on quite a bit of charity work, preferring to get involved with causes that aimed at improving women's education. During a visit in 1911 to the United Kingdom, Cecilie developed a friendship with Queen Mary, which lasted until the Queen died.

How are you helping the women's liberation movement? Such a access to abortion clinics and so on... I rarely see you post anything that has to do with women unless it's about trans women and other non-binary afabs...
Hey there Anon, we are an anti-fascist social media collective consisting of ten people in eight countries. We've been doing our thing since 2014. In that time we have: -been documenting and tracking hate-motivated violence targeting women. -provided legal defence funding to 100 feminists arrested in Germany for stopping a fascist march against abortion access (via The International Anti-Fascist Defence Fund) -provided additional support (via the Defence Fund) to this teacher, this other teacher, this woman, this community college staffer, this PNW woman, this waitress, Louise Thundercloud, two moms in SC, this victim of the 2017 Charlottesville terror attack, this BLM defender, Lina, Alissa Azar, Kita and Xvedia, Tabitha, and this Filipina activist, among others. -profiled anti-fascists like Marina Abiol, Hedy Epstein, Jane Elliot, Leah Feldman, Giovanina Berneri, Zora Neale Hurston, Ida B. Wells, Yuri Kochiyam, Natalie Tran, Elizabeth Mironova, Lyudmila Pavlichenko, Magda, Arundhati Roy, Anastasia Baburova, Zinaida Portnova, Marina Ginestà, Heather McGhee, Akilah Green, Fanya Schoonheyt, Sophie Scholl, Tina Anselmi, Faye Schulman, Hanna Bohman, Viola Liuzzo, Joan Trumpauer Mulholland, Maria Kislyak, Maria Dimadi, Georgette Kokoczinski, Irma Bandiera, Franceska Mann, Rebecca West, Lepa Radic, Giovannina Caleffi, and Audrey Hepburn, among others. Still, we could be posting more, of course! Why don't you tag us on posts from your tumblr you think we should reblog/signal boost? (finally, we get a whiff of "all lives matter/TERFishness from your objections about us not posting enough about "women" except for "trans women" - we hope that's not how you intended your msg!

For over two decades, President Vladimir Putin has squeezed dissent in Russia. Critics, journalists, and defectors have faced dire consequences after opposing him. From poisonings to shootings, mysterious falls from windows, and even plane crashes, there is a long trail of silenced voices.
Alexei Navalny, whose death in prison is as yet unexplained, had previously fallen ill on a flight from Siberia to Moscow in 2020 after being poisoned with Novichok, a nerve agent. Alexander Litvinenko, a former Russian spy who defected and was a prominent Putin critic, was murdered with polonium-210 in London in 2016.
Other deaths of opposition figures under Putin's rule also appear to follow a pattern. Boris Nemtsov, shot dead near the Kremlin, and Stanislav Markelov, assassinated in Moscow alongside journalist Anastasia Baburova, are just two examples. Natalia Estemirova, abducted and found dead in Chechnya, and Anna Politkovskaya, an investigative journalist murdered in her Moscow apartment building, also paid the ultimate price following their dissent.
Here are 10 prominent Putin critics who have died in assassinations or mysterious circumstances.
Alexei Navalny
Date of death: February 16, 2024
Cause of Death: Alexei Navalny died in prison. The Russian prison service reported that he felt unwell after a walk and lost consciousness.
Biography: Alexei Navalny was a prominent critic of Vladimir Putin. He gained global attention in 2020 when he survived a poisoning with the nerve agent Novichok. Navalny willingly returned to Russia from Germany in 2021, where he had received treatment for the previous poisoning. Upon his return, he was promptly arrested. Navalny was known for exposing corruption, investigating Putin's inner circle, and leading anti-Kremlin opposition movements. His death is likely to be seen by fellow opposition members as a political assassination attributable to Putin, but is as yet unexplained.
Mikhail Lesin
Age: 57
Date of Death: November 5, 2015
Cause of Death: Mikhail Lesin was a former Russian press minister and media executive. He fell out of favor with Putin and faced scrutiny for his wealth. Lesin was found dead in a Washington, D.C. hotel room. The official cause of death was ruled as accidental blunt force injuries, but questions persist about the circumstances.
Boris Nemtsov
Age: 55
Date of Death: February 27, 2015
Cause of Death: Boris Nemtsov was shot dead on a bridge near the Kremlin. His murder remains unsolved, but many believe it was politically motivated. Nemtsov was a vocal critic of Putin's government, advocating for democracy, human rights, and transparency. He served as a deputy prime minister under President Boris Yeltsin and later became a prominent opposition figure.
Boris Berezovsky
Age: 67
Date of Death: March 23, 2013
Cause of Death: Boris Berezovsky was a wealthy businessman, oligarch, and former ally of Putin. However, he became a vocal critic and fled to the U.K. Berezovsky was found dead in his home in Berkshire, England. The official cause of death was ruled as suicide, but suspicions remain due to his high-profile opposition activities.
Sergei Magnitsky
Age: 37
Date of Death: November 16, 2009
Cause of Death: Sergei Magnitsky was a lawyer and auditor who exposed a massive tax fraud scheme involving Russian officials. He was arrested, imprisoned, and denied medical treatment. Magnitsky died in custody following severe beatings and medical neglect. His death led to the passing of the Magnitsky Act in the United States, which sanctions Russian officials involved in human rights abuses and corruption.
Stanislav Markelov
Age: 34
Date of Death: January 19, 2009
Cause of Death: Stanislav Markelov was a human rights lawyer and journalist. He was assassinated in Moscow by a gunman who also killed journalist Anastasia Baburova. Markelov had represented victims of human rights abuses and criticized the Russian government's actions in Chechnya. His death raised concerns about the safety of those opposing the regime.
Anastasia Baburova
Age: 25
Date of Death: January 19, 2009
Cause of Death: Anastasia Baburova, a journalist and activist, was shot dead alongside human rights lawyer Stanislav Markelov in Moscow. She had reported on neo-Nazi groups and political violence. Her murder remains unsolved, but it is believed to be connected to her activism.
Natalia Estemirova
Age: 50
Date of Death: July 15, 2009
Cause of Death: Natalia Estemirova, a human rights activist and journalist, was abducted in Grozny, Chechnya, and found dead later that day. She had documented human rights violations in Chechnya and criticized the government. Her murder remains unsolved, but it is widely believed to be connected to her activism and criticism of the Chechen authorities.
Anna Politkovskaya
Age: 48
Date of Death: October 7, 2006
Cause of Death: Anna Politkovskaya, an investigative journalist, was shot dead in her apartment building in Moscow. She had reported extensively on human rights abuses, corruption, and the war in Chechnya. Her work was critical of Putin's government, and her murder sparked international outrage. Despite investigations, the masterminds behind her killing have not been brought to justice.
Yuri Shchekochikhin
Age: 53
Date of Death: July 3, 2003
Cause of Death: Yuri Shchekochikhin was a journalist, writer, and member of the Russian State Duma. He investigated corruption, organized crime, and human rights abuses. Shchekochikhin suddenly fell ill and died from an unknown cause. Some suspect poisoning, but the circumstances remain unclear.

List of journalists killed in Russia
The dangers to journalists in Russia have been known since the early 1990s but concern over the number of unsolved killings soared after Anna Politkovskaya's murder in Moscow on 7 October 2006. While international monitors mentioned a dozen deaths, some sources within Russia talked of over two hundred fatalities.
2009 reports on deaths of journalists in Russia: In June 2009, a wide-ranging investigation by the International Federation of Journalists into the deaths of journalists in Russia was published. At the same time, the IFJ launched an online database which documents over three hundred deaths and disappearances since 1993.

Her illegitimate son Alexis Louis de Wenden; 19: Villa Wenden in Nice; 20. The formidable Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna.
The other Anastaisa
Grand Duchess Anastasia Mikhailovna was born in 1860, the second child and only daughter of Grand Duke Mikhail Nicholaevich and Grand Duchess Olga Feodorovna (nee Princess Cecilie of Baden.) Anastasia was a granddaughter of Nicholas I. The better-known Anastasia (the daughter of Nicholas II) would be born a little over a half-century later, promising to be just as indomitable as her predecessor (she did not have the chance to fulfill that promise.)
Stasi (as her brothers called Anastasia Mikhailovna) was her father's favorite child. Her brothers worshipped her. Her mother was the disciplinarian of the house. The boys were allowed to see their sister only on Sundays.
Anastasia married Frederick Francis III, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, at 19. Frederick Francis was Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna, the Elder's brother. He had very poor health throughout his life; he had asthma and multiple allergies and rashes, and he needed to live during extended periods in the warmer climate of the Mediterranean rather than in Northern Europe; this was just fine with Anastasia, who would never adjust to her adoptive country or gain the affection of the people there. The couple established Villa Wenden in the South of France, and she would live in that area of the world most of her life. Frederick's homosexuality was known throughout Europe, but the couple seemed to have gotten along well. Anastasia spent lavishly at the casinos, and Frederick Francis was glad to provide her with the funds. When the Grand Duke died, she said: "On this day, I have lost my best friend."
They had three children, and all married very well:
Duchess Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1879 –1952); married King Christian X of Denmark. They had two sons.
Frederick Francis IV, Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1882 –1945), married Princess Alexandra of Hanover and Cumberland. They had five children.
Duchess Cecilie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1886 –1954.) She married Wilhelm, the German Crown Prince. They had six children.
Up to the death of her husband, Anastasia's life had transcurred without scandal. However, a few years later, she began an affair with Vladimir Alexandrovitch Paltov, her secretary. She soon became pregnant by him and attempted to hide that fact by claiming she was suffering from a tumor. She claimed to have chickenpox when she delivered the child. Her son, Alexis Louis de Wenden, was born in Nice in 1902. She was able to bring him up herself and wrote to him daily when he was away at school. After the scandal became public, she was advised never to live near her daughter, now the Crown Princess of Germany (she was given special permission to visit her daughter for the birth of her first grandson.)
After her father had a stroke, he went to live with Stasi in Villa Wenden. As the senior member of the Romanov clan, "Uncle Misha" received many visitors, including the Tsar. At least one of her brothers was in residence at Villa Wenden at any given time. When her father died in 1909, Anastasia inherited an enormous fortune. She continued to live as she wished, gambling heavily, going to the theater, and dancing.
World War I split the family apart. Her son was the reigning Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, her daughter was the German Emperor's daughter-in-law, she was a Russian Grand Duchess, and her Russian family was fighting on the opposite side. She settled in neutral Switzerland. The war cost her son and daughter their (prospective) crowns. After the war, she returned to Nice. There she founded a charity to help Russian exiles. Vladimir Paltov was the charity's president, perhaps indicating that the relationship continued. She lived in Villa Fantasia in Eze, which is near Cannes.
Anastasia died suddenly after suffering a stroke in 1922. She rests in Ludwigslust next to her husband. All of her children have living descendants today, including her illegitimate son. She certainly lived as she wished. Which is something that the other Anastasia would have probably done should she have been given the chance.
