‘Aadujeevitham – The Goat Life’ movie review: Prithviraj’s performance drives a survival drama that borders on monotony
Prithviraj in ‘Aadujeevitham: The Goat Life’ | Photo Credit: Special Arrangement Unimaginable are the ways in which adversities can reshape a human being. The physical transformation is the most obvious of these. But, Blessy’s Aadujeevitham — based on the real-life story of a man who ends up living in slave-like conditions in a goat farm in the middle of a desert — deals with much more than…

The Teacher Malayalam Movie Review and analysis
My impression: Started out intrigued, left very unimpressed
My initial reaction to this movie is that it was two different genre movies mashed together. The first half (the first 2/3rds really) is a slow burn drama about sexual assault. The last third is a lousy attempt at a revenge thriller. I don’t think the director understood that these two are separate genres deserving separate treatments.
Overall, I wouldn’t waste my time watching it. Some moments stood out but they don’t justify sitting through the actual movie.
Content warnings: of course, rape, drugged rape, victim blaming, violence, and slight indirect homophobia
SPOILERS BELOW THE CUT
Let’s talk about the first half. Aside from a few flaws, it wasn’t too badly executed, if the point of the movie was to raise awareness about the mental state of a rape victim in a drama format. Anyone who watched half the trailer or read the movie description already understands that Amala Paul’s character has experienced sexual assault of some kind, so this level of slow burn, and delayed reveal of the sexual assault was maybe not needed. However, certain scenes like the teacher finding her earring on the ground, the security guard asking her what happened, etc were still intriguing enough and gave an unsettling feeling that helped us sympathize with the character. I did also somewhat like how the flashback naturally flowed into the narrative, where finally everything about the assault is revealed to the viewer and the husband - this is where the unsettling mystery ends and the ‘seeking justice’ part begins.
The ‘seeking justice’ section, aka the part where the woman tells the man everything, gets insulted, is discouraged from going to the police, etc, is pretty cookie cutter. The one interesting part is that every woman that she tells her story to believes her (except for the fellow teacher at the beginning). Her mother, sisters (? or cousins), mother in law, etc are all fully supportive of her, and seem to back up her desire for revenge. This is somewhat fresh, but feels like wishful thinking - in reality there will be a lot more women trying to convince you to sweep it under the rug. A lot of affirming feminist dialogue in the movie feels very forced and stony.
Then comes the revenge bit. I first felt the ‘this is a revenge thriller’ feeling when the Teacher goes home and is revealed to be the daughter of a quarry explosives specialist. We’re shown she has ‘badass’ roots and connections through her heritage. Following this are more clumsy attempts at being a dramatic thriller as the Teacher prepares for the climax - she is shown receiving a mysterious package from an old acquaintance, recruiting Chemban Vinod’s character to be the muscle, seducing the object of her revenge to set the stage, etc. It all culminates in an extremely clunky deux ex machina - the Teacher pulling out karate moves and.... fucking NUN CHUCKS???? straight out of her ass. While some of the twists were enjoyable, like the 4 boys being wise to her plan, the sudden appearance of the gangster on the stairs, and the cop he befriended guarding the door, the pathetic fight scene attempting to look serious simply ruins it. It reminds me of the jarring climax of Varathan (funnily enough, also a rape revenge thriller - when will they end?) - the final climax attempting to be an adrenaline packed action scene, where the hero/heroine pulls off physics defying martial arts, is too similar, and fails similarly. I am not saying this kind of wild twist shouldn’t happen - it would have been enjoyable if the whole tone of the movie was set up in this way - if the movie was more lighthearted from the beginning, and the ‘preparation for revenge’ portion of the story had begun much earlier and been central to the movie. Perhaps the revenge could have been more well planned and thorough - instead of things going wrong and Amala having to resort to fighting them after her first plan fails, they could have made her fighting part of the plan. To add this weird power fantasy into what started out as a sombre depiction of a SA survivor’s story, does both genres injustice.
Certain details I wanted to nitpick: 1. the extremely creepy segment at the beginning where an unrelated child victim and her family are threatened into silence - why was it done this way?? The reality of rape culture is all too well known, so there was no reason to depict the cop in this scene abusing the family so thoroughly - as soon as the cop walked in, we all knew how it was gonna go - there was no need to turn it into a PSA. The purpose of this scene is to let the husband character overhear this dialogue as a third party, and to expose him to rape culture, to prepare him to be a jerk later in the movie - a ‘this is why he thinks this way!’ moment. If this was the only use for the scene then it should have been done in a much more subtle and artful way, without needing to give the audience the extra PSA, and without the gratuitous description of sexual assault on the child in the dialogue.
scene 2: the little detour at the wedding party - the whole point of this scene was to allow the teacher to begin reconnecting with her attackers and gather evidence, with the recording of the boy’s phone call. We can also argue that the revenge scene at the wedding home was written to set the stage for the revenge theme of the whole movie. The chilling way the teacher alludes to how ‘women have many ways of seeking revenge’ was well done - but misplaced. However, everything else about this scene was a trainwreck. The relatives of the boy attacking the teacher mistakenly was interesting at first, but seems ridiculously distracting when it’s revealed it has nothing to do with the overall plot. The fact that the boy’s ex girlfriend ordered an acid attack on the boy is a whole can of worms - first of all this is a huge issue faced by women in India, where they are the victims of stalker ex boyfriends. Reversing the genders in this situation is a sick and failed attempt at ‘girl power’ - a girl using acid on a boy as revenge for dumping her, is shown as a gotcha moment, and to draw a comparison from this to the Teacher’s desire for revenge for her rape is completely misguided. By using this scene they are equating the two, which is extremely problematic. They also jam in the reason for the breakup as casteism - are we supposed to cheer on the girl for the acid attack because the relatives of the boy were casteist? This not only misappropriates the issue of acid attacks, but also reinforces casteist stereotypes by writing the ex gf to behave exactly as the relatives predicted.
3. Chemban Vinod’s gangster character implied to be gay - when this was first implied when he and Teacher have a ‘heart to heart’ (ie, he goes on a monologue about his life while she listens), I was happy to see they at least attempted some lgbt rep, in a character who is shown in a positive light and not emasculated - great - but I was quickly put off by how it was framed. Why was the gangster character written this way? He implies he’s gay (implies, not reveals, another key factor), when the Teacher is afraid of him - as if he was made gay simply to make him a non-threat to the Teacher. To add insult to injury, at the fight scene, we see him tie up one of the boys and shut the door, and we hear the boy begging - as if to imply that he is about to rape the boy. It doesn’t actually happen, he was doing something else violent, but the gross implication that the gay man was about to rape the boy was simply horrible and extremely homophobic.
I've seen too many of malayalam movies about sexual assault and violence against women. It's not one of those topics that need to be shown more or need a fresh take, like lgbtq rights, menstruation/menopause, environmentalism, etc. Rape is an age old issue for Indian women and it has been a topic in malayalam cinema for ages as well, with shifting depictions and perspectives. I don't think I've seen a well made depiction of the issue yet. The craft of the movies are great because they definitely have their desired effect - when that boy forcefully kissed the teachers cheek, the disgust and fear was tangible for me as a woman viewer. Yet all it produces in me is disgust, not gratification or relief, that this thing is being put up on the big screen. Why are these movies being made this way? Who are they for? Do they really bring about a positive change in the long run? While I appreciate the pure intention of these male filmmakers, i wish they would stop botching this subject over and over in their attempts at solidarity. I don't know how many more of these movies I can watch. Although compared to some other movies I’ve seen, at least I can sense that the film was written with good intentions, and the depiction doesn’t feel gratuitous thankfully - just not handled well. I'll elaborate on this topic in my future post about Chola (oooh yes. I have feelings about that one.)

Vivek’s underwhelming ‘The Teacher’ (Malayalam) might have worked better as a pulpy B-movie than a “serious film with good intentions”
Spoilers ahead… Amala Paul shows us the grit in a woman who faces difficult choices – but both she and Hakkim Shajahan are let down by the predictable writing.  Vivek follows Athiran with The Teacher, and one of the nicest bits of the film takes place in a bus. Sujith (Hakkim Shajahan) is on a call to his wife, Devika (Amala Paul). He has made a mistake, a big mistake. He is apologising.  And…
