The Aznavoorian Duo Plays New and Recent Chamber Music from Armenia
Cedille CDR 90000 209 Listeners of a certain age and those versed in recent classical music history will recall another fine pair of Armenian American musicians (also sisters) whose performances and recordings introduced many to the work of Armenian American composer Alan Hovhaness (1911-2001) as well as John Cage, Aram Khachaturian, and others. I am speaking of pianist Maro Ajemian (1921-1978)…

Ewa Bandrowska-Turska (1894–1979) was a Polish coloratura soprano and music educator. Her repertoire ranged from early music to early 20th-century classical music. She toured both throughout Europe and the United States and she was awarded multiple cultural prizes including the Officer's Cross of the Order of Rebirth of Poland and the Polish National Prize, First Class. From 1911 to 1913, she studied music in Kraków with her uncle, Aleksander Bandrowski  who was an operatic tenor, and then studied with the Polish soprano Helena Zboińska in Vienna. She debuted in Vienna in 1916 and that same year performed a concert with songs by Schubert and Schumann in Kraków. Her stage debut was as "Marguerite" in Charles Gounod's opera Faust in 1917 at the Great Theater of Warsaw.  From 1917 to 1922 she was engaged at the Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet, but was forced by a pulmonary infection to cease performing and seek treatment in Zakopane. After a brief stay, she was able to return to the Warsaw Opera House in 1923, where she performed through 1924. Simultaneously, between 1923 and 1925 she was engaged for performances in Poznań at the Grand Theatre.  Between 1926 and 1930, she performed as a soloist in Katowice, Lviv, Poznań and Warsaw. Bandrowska-Turska made a successful tour in Paris in 1930 which began several years of touring abroad, appearing for the first time in the Soviet Union in 1934[2] and debuting in the United States at Carnegie Hall in 1935.[3] She performed extensively including venues in Bratislava, Brussels, Chicago, Cleveland, Copenhagen, Hamburg, Leningrad, Moscow, New York, Nice, Odessa, Ostend, Paris, Sofia, and Stockholm. In 1938, she appeared in a film, based on Stanisław Moniuszko's opera Halka, performing the title role. The film opened in New York in January 1938  and was still being shown in tours in the United States in 1944 and 1945  In 1939, a special trans-Atlantic broadcast was set up from the Royal Castle in Cracow to the United States. Bandrowska-Turska performed four songs by Karol Szymanowski for U.S. audiences  From 1945 to 1949 Bandrowska-Turska served as a music professor at the State Academy of Music in Kraków and then from 1949 to 1951, she taught at the College of Opera in Poznań. Her repertoire was diverse and included both early music and contemporary classical music. Bandrowska-Turska premiered many works by Szymanowski, including his Fairy-tale Princess for voice and orchestra, Op. 31. Tadeusz Kassern wrote a concerto for voice and orchestra, Op. 8, for her. She also performed Reinhold Glière's concerto for coloratura soprano and orchestra in F minor, Op. 82,  and Alexander Arutiunian's concerto for coloratura soprano.  She sang works in six languages,  including French, German, Polish and Russian.  Lyric operas were her specialty, and she performed in Puccini's La bohème, Verdi's La traviata, and both Manon and Werther by Jules Massenet. Some of her best-known roles were Constanza in Mozart's Die Entführung aus dem Serail, Marguerite de Valois in Meyerbeer's Les Huguenots, Leila in Bizet's Les pêcheurs de perles, the title role in Moniuszko's The Countess, and Leonora in Verdi's Il Trovatore. Her final performance was as Moniuszko's Countess in September 1961 at the Grand Theatre of Warsaw.

Around 45,000 people followed Music 20 International Festival in Armenia

Around 45,000 people followed Music 20 International Festival in Armenia
Tumblr media
Almost 45 thousand music lovers from Armenia, Russia, Germany, Malta, UK and many other countries were following the “Music 20” online international festival, held on July 10 through 28 in Armenia. The official website music20.am was created to broadcast the performances throughout the festival days.
Along with local Armenian artists, a large number of celebrated musicians were hosted in Armenia as guest performers of the festival – cellists Alexander Ramm, Boris Andrianov, violinists Andrey Baranov, Francesca Dego, Haik Kazazian, conductors Marius Stravinsky, Rustem Abiazov, Alan Chircop, Gianluca Marciano, pianists Nikita Mndoyants, Alexander Gindin, Gloria Campaner and clarinet Igor Fedorov.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The festival was organized owing to the joint efforts of the European Foundation for Support of Culture and the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex. The Armenian State Symphony Orchestra was the official orchestra of the festival.
The invited musicians were sharing their emotions on the “Music 20” festival “feeling like a breeze of fresh air amid the limitations of the Covid-19 pandemic, introduced by the organizers and allowing thousands of listeners to savor high-quality music”, as was shared by many of them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rustem Abiazov, the Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Kazan “La Primavera” Chamber Orchestra, admits his disbelief that “Music 20” would even be possible to carry out. “Of course, I knew that the President of the European Foundation for Support of Culture, Konstantin Ishkhanov, always achieves the goals he targets. Despite this, I was traveling to Armenia with certain concerns over the possibility to organize something like this under the present conditions. However, I arrived in Yerevan to witness a festival with an unusual format. A large number of orchestras around the world are streaming their concerts online these days, and I am thrilled that Armenia is in leading position in this respect”, Rustem Abiazov said.
Violinist Haik Kazazian emphased that there is no other festival of a similar scale held across the world which demonstrates the big love of Armenia for classical music.
Sergey Smbatyan, the Principal Conductor and the Artistic Director of the Armenian State Symphony Orchestra sums up the outcomes of the “Music 20” festival, stating that today highly demanded artists around the world admit to be given a second breath with this initiative presented by Armenia. “For me it is valuable to show the paramount importance of classical music for Armenia. We had brilliant concerts. The Symphony Orchestra overcame challenges with world-scale artists. Remarkably, the events in the cultural life of Armenia have been exposed to the whole world for the past two weeks. Around 45,000 views evidence that what we offer to the global cultural life is highly demanded, meaning that amid the cultural standstill of the world  something is being created in Armenia that goes against the flow and works out well”, Sergey Smbatyan said.
All anti-pandemic security measures were ensured during the festival.
Karen Ghazaryan, the Director of the Karen Demirchyan Sports and Concerts Complex, emphasized that under these challenging circumstances we were able to carry out the “Music 20″ festival successfully, with all safety measures in place. “We had a large number of views, and, most importantly, no cases of infection were reported during the festival. This shows that with proper organization and operational responsibility it is possible to hold events that present no threat to public health”, Mr.Ghazaryan noted.
To diversity concert program included 19 symphony and chamber concerts, as well as a series of recitals featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, Skryabin, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Grig, Shor, Khachaturian, Ghazaros Saryan, Alexander Arutiunian, Edward Mirzoyan, John Ter-Tadevosian, Stepan Shakaryan, Tigran Mansurian, Eduard Hayrapetyan and other composers.

SYNOPSIS: Act I In an Armenian village people are resting after a hard day’s work. Compared with the other girls, Gayane stands out with her beauty and charm. In her spare time she loves to dance. Gayaneh is the embodiment of Armenia, its vivid colours and unique national hues. Armen, who is in love with Gayane, cannot draw his eyes away from the young woman.
Act II Giko, who is aware of Gayaneh and Armen’s love, nevertheless tries to win the girl’s heart. His unrequited love encourages him to play dirty and cruel tricks. Giko is a courageous and decisive fellow who will see no obstacles in his path. But here he faces defeat. This annoys Giko. His heart is filled with malice and despair. He resolves to avenge himself.
Act III With the help of his friends, Giko abducts Gayane. The entire village hears of what has happened with lightning speed. The villagers are shocked and angry. Led by Armen, they discover the kidnappers. Giko is unable to bear the villagers’ wroth. He resolves to flee. Gayaneh and Armen are happy. Love has triumphed and they are free to marry. All their fellow villagers sing and dance at the wedding. This part of the ballet includes several folk dances, among them the famous Sabre Dance.
The opera house was founded in 1932 and opened in January 1933. In 1938 the theatre was named after the outstanding Armenian musician and teacher Alexander Spendiarian, while in 1956 it was awarded the honorary epithet of “Academic”. The very greatest figures in Armenian culture were involved in the establishment of the theatre, among them the singers Aikanush Danielian, Shara Talian, Leon Isetsky-Ioanisian and Alexander Karatov, the conductors Konstantin Sarajev, Georgy Budagian, Suren Charekian, Vladimir Piradov, Sergei Shatirian and Mikael Tavrizian, the designers Martiros Sarian and Ara Arutyunian, the stage directors Arshak Burjalian, Armen Gulakian, Levan Kalantar and Vardan Ajemian and the ballet master Ilya Arbatov. The gala opening of the theatre saw a performance of Alexander Spendiarian’s opera Almast, the libretto of which was based on the poem The Capture of Tmkabert by Hovhannes Tumanian, itself based on folk tales and legends. The opera was given a rapturous reception by audiences and critics alike, and ever since then the theatre has opened each new season with this opera in line with tradition. The first ballet production was Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake in 1935. Thanks to the opening of the new theatre, Armenia began to witness the emergence of operas and ballets based on folk themes. In 1939 Aram Khachaturian composed music for Happiness, the first Armenian ballet. The ballet was subsequently renamed Gayane, and this new music version was created in 1942 to a libretto by Konstantin Derzhavin with choreography by Nina Anisimova, though in 1957 the score was drastically revised. Khachaturian later composed three suites for concert performance based on music from the stage version of the ballet. Arguably, the most famous musical highlight is the Sabre Dance from the last act of the ballet. To this day, Gayane is a vivid example of the combination of folk and classical dance and it has become a symbol of Armenia. The production created by people’s artist of Armenia Vilen Galstyan occupies a special position in the repertoire of Armenia’s national opera house – its dancers have performed it in countries all over the world, and wherever it is performed it is an unfailing “hit” with audiences. Over the years, the theatre has formed a rich and varied repertoire, staging the finest operas and ballets from international and Armenian music reserves. These include the operas Davit-Bek and Anush by Armen Tigranyan, Arshak II and Karine by Tigran Chukhajian, The Queen of Spades by Pyotr Tchaikovsky, I pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, Otello and La traviata by Giuseppe Verdi, Poliuto by Gaetano Donizetti, Carmen by Georges Bizet and Aleko by Sergei Rachmaninoff and the ballets Sevan by Grigory Yegiazarian, Gayane and Spartacus by Aram Khachaturian, Romeo and Juliet by Sergei Prokofiev, Don Quixote by Ludwig Minkus, Vardanank by Edgar Oganesian, the Gotan Project’s Tango, Sayat-Nova by Alexander Arutiunian, Spring to music by Antonio Vivaldi and Boléro to music by Maurice Ravel to name but a few. Over the years the theatre has been directed by acclaimed figures of the arts world – such as singer and stage director Tigran Levonyan and singer Gegam Grigorian – while the theatre’s current Principal Conductor and Music Director is Karen Durgaryan, Honoured Artist of the Republic of Armenia.

Concert for trumpet in B-flat by Alexandra Pakhmutova  Russian composer played by Timofei Dokshizer one of the best trumpet players in the world, but if you ask me, the best player ever after Maurice Andre. Also one of the best concerts ever written for trumpet. Concert is beautifull. But for me the best concert is still by Alexander Arutiunian Armenian composer, more on him later.
Alexandra Pakhmutova was born on 9 November 1929 in Beketovk Russian SFSR, Soviet Union, and began playing the piano and composing music at an early age. Her career is notable for her success in a range of different genres. She has composed pieces for the symphony orchestra (The Russian Suite, the concerto for the trumpet and the orchestra, the Youth Overture, the concerto for the orchestra); the ballet Illumination; music for children (cantatas, a series of choir pieces, and numerous songs); and songs and music for over a dozen different movies from Out of This World in 1958 to Because of Mama in 2001. She is now 88 years old.

Martin Scorses remembers how Armenian professor inspired him
February 11, 2020 – 16:53 AMT
PanARMENIAN.Net – Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese has told the story of how Armenian-American professor of film Haig P. Manoogian inspired him to become a filmmaker.
“Having the asthma, I was not allowed to play sports, so everything came to me through movies on television,” Scorsese said in a video prepared by Rolex to promote excellence in filmmaking.
“I lived on Elizabeth street between Prince and Houston (in New York City – Ed.), but I never went to the West Side. And so I just went to the corner of Elizabeth and Houston, made a left and walked about six blocks and was in another universe.”
The future Oscar-winning director was accepted to the Washington Square College which was part of NYU (New York University).
“And so I attended this orientation day — this was an eye-opening situation — and this gentleman got up and spoke with such passion and such energy about cinema. I became part of the cult. His name was Haig Manoogian,” he said.
“Haig really inspired us. He pushed us and he cajoled us, he beat us down and he built us back up again. He set a fire in our hearts. It’s one of the most precious gifts I have ever received.”
Scorses said that his experience with Manoogian led him to becoming a guide for other young people coming up to him.
Manoogian is the author of the book “The Film-Maker’s Art”, published in 1966.
Scorsese’s 1980 film “Raging Bull”, a winner of two Academy Awards, was dedicated to the Armenian teacher.

Armenian Soprano Dazzles at Dresden Event
Soprano Ruzan Mantashyan performs at the 2020 SemperOpernball festival in Dresden, Germany
Armenian soprano Ruzan Mantashyan dazzled the audience at the SemperOpernball 2020 festival in Dresden on Friday with a dramatic performance of Tatiana’s aria from Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin opera.
Mantashyan became a household name last month after SemperOpernball organizers reneged her invitation when a Azerbaijani tenor Yusif Eyvazov said he would not perform with the Armenian soprano because of her ethnicity. After many protests and confrontation from Mantashyan’s agents, the singer was reinstated to the program
“I am happy that the performance took place and reached its logical and triumphant end,” Mantashyan told Armenpress after the event.
Yerevan Komitas State Consevatory lecturer Margarite Sargsyan shared a video of Mantashyan’s performance on Facebook, and praised the soprano. “This was truly brilliant. Well-done….This is our school,” she said.

Other musicians who performed at the concert included violinist Pavel Milyukov, soprano Yulia Muzichenko and pianist Alexander Kashpurin, as well as the Azerbaijani Eyvazov.
