Fortnite has partnered with apparel giant Nike and its—Swoosh Web3 platform, which offers digital apparel and accessories sold as NFTs. The alliance does not integrate NFTs into Fortnite, but the link between the companies still involves crypto elements. Unveiled today, “Airphoria” is a Nike-branded experience within Fortnite’s Creative Mode, letting users go on the “ultimate Nike sneaker hunt” within a Fortnite game world. The experience, which will be live in the game until June 27, can earn players a free in-game “back bling” or avatar accessory styled like a classic pair of Nike Air Max sneakers. The recent collaboration between Fortnite and Nike in order to promote their partnership to inculcate Nikes into the virtual and expansive world of Fortnite. This creates an environment where players can interact with the products in a virtual manner.
Due to players being able to create their own islands and do anything on them, it gave Nike a blank canvas to create Airphoria an entire Nike themed island where players get to interact with the Nike placed characters Airie and Maxxed Out Max. This increases the retention towards the experience players had on Airphoria and for them to perhaps participate in real life. The city features five points of interest which when interacted with shows an important moment in the history of the company which engages players within the game.
They also made sure to make these characters as well as other cosmetic items related to the collaboration on the game's store. Fortnite being a free-to-play game primarily relies on microtransactions made through their in-game store in exchange for cosmetic items which made players actually spend actual currency in order to own these items virtually.
Fortnite is no stranger to collaborations with Balenciaga, the NBA, Naomi Osaka and other entities under its belt. this serves as a somewhat reliable grounds to influence players to interact with the brands virtually as well as realistically. The tools of advertisement are used quite aptly with iconic as well as indexical elements.

Nike is potentially releasing an NFT sneaker collection in the popular game, Fortnite. Significantly, Nike has hinted at an upcoming 'ultimate Sneakerhunt' called Airphoria to take place in the game. Of course, this news has the NFT and gaming community excited. The web3 move from the shoe giants into the widely popular online game could see a huge onboarding into NFTs. Although currently, there aren't many details. The very brief teaser video posted by Nike shows their Air Max logo alongside the Fortnite logo against a cloud background. The video ends with the date 20th June 2023 and, importantly, Nike's dot swoosh logo - the web3 arm of the footwear retailer.
Despite the current lack of information from the two popular companies, the web3 and gaming communities were quick to try and work out what this all means. Many community members are wondering if Nike has developed an NFT game that uses Fortnite Creative 2.0. Notably, Fortnite Creative 2.0 allows anyone to build their own virtual island game maps that use Fortnite assets. This comes after Nike's NFT team announced a partnership with EA Sports. Airphoria is brought to life by the power of five iconic Air Max “Grails” (the Air Max 1 OG, Air Max 97, Air Max TW, Air Max Scorpion and Air Max Pulse) suspended in a majestic and pure air destination above the Airphoria city. These Air Max Grails, representing pivotal moments in Air Max history, allow the city to exist in the “Air State” — a place that represents pure imagination and creativity.
To complement the Airphoria launch, Fortnite players can purchase the Outfits showcased by the two main Airphoria characters, Airie and Maxxed Out Max, in the Fortnite Item Shop now. These two Outfits are part of the Airphoria Pack, which also includes the Pure Sole Boombox and Maxx Stacks Back Blings. A limited Airphoria-inspired collection is simultaneously dropping on nike.com in North America, directly linking the virtual world of Airphoria in Fortnite with Nike Air Max.
