Review: Not All Robots #1
By Dustin Cabeal
This is my first comic from AWA. I have little interest in where the company came from and all the backstory. I just know that more comic book companies are a good thing especially as legacy companies continue to be bought by corporate entities. Though I’m fairly certain that AWA is likely owned by a corporation. At any rate, this issue does not make me want to further explore their line of books. That’s fucked up right? Well, that’s how it goes. Every book has the potential to be someone’s first or first book with your company and when you’re a new company every issue potentially decides a reader’s interest in your entire line. That said, I’m not an asshole and will give them further chances, but Not All Robots is a book that I would like to never think about again.
Humans have fucked up the planet to the point that they live in bubble cities and robots do everything for us. Humans are forced to have a live in robot like a weird stepdad… that lives with your dad. The issue spends a ton of time with a Fox news segment about whether humans are needed, and this is discussed between two robots and a human. That is until Walt Disney’s head kills the Orlando bubble for some reason.
There is no reason for humans to be alive in this world. Like none. The robots know it. The humans know it… so why are they stuck together? They shouldn’t be and it breaks the entire logic of the story. We follow Al Bundy the robot as he begrudgingly goes to work each day to hit a button before going home to the family that lives in fear of him murdering them. The story spends so much time with the talking head news segment that next to nothing happens in the story. There’s no character development. Stepdad robot is just a burnt out working misunderstood by his family, who give concerned looks to each other rather than saying anything other than “I think that robot is going to kill me”, while the father hilariously loves on murder bot. I wish I could have enjoyed that more and maybe this would have worked better as a comic strip with a murder bot gag each day.
Deodato’s artwork is consistent and well crafted, but it’s lacking anything to make it interesting. The panels are all safe. The designs are basic. It doesn’t feel like the future, but rather the 90s with knock off Futurama robots. Usually, I’m a big fan of Deodato’s artwork, but there’s something lacking here. Like he’s going through the motions but doesn’t have any interest in the story he’s telling. At least that’s what comes across in the artwork.
I’m not going to rip on this book further, but by the end of it, I had no interest in reading more. It was a chore to finish and the entire plot of robots running the planet and wondering why they keep humans around seemed pointless. Because if that were the situation, it would be pointless to have humans because that’s the entire plot to Terminator.

Knighted: Gregg Hurwitz's Portfolio Tells Its Story
@AWA_Studios @Upshot_Studios it's never a dull moment with your stuff. Pretty nice to research how @GreggHurwitz #comic bibliography made Knighted. #comics #comicbooks #Batman #MoonKnight #Punisher
Knighted is one of the titles in the Upshot Universe by AWA Studios. As the homage covers indicate, this is the publisher’s take on the Team Normal trope, especially Batman. This actually has a lot more layers to it, especially with the writer Gregg Hurwitz’s bibliography. His time with vigilante characters allow a fresh take on this archetype and setting. Let’s go over why. Knighted By…

Comics and Climate
A while ago, Upshot Studios/AWA produced an excellent series of stories from the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic (see: COVID Comics). Over the past few months, in partnership with NBC News, they’ve been doing the same thing with grassroots stories of climate change. The stories are published online (at the link below) and will be published as a trade paperback in late November. NBC News…

Fight Girls #3
Tumblr media
Fight Girls #3 AWA Upshot Studios 2021 By Frank Sho Coloured by Sabine Rich Lettered by Sal Cipriano    Ten hard-as-nails women face off in an ancient contest of champions where the winner truly takes all: the title of "Queen of the Galaxy." To win the challenge each contestant must survive the hazards of the planet's harsh landscape, the ferocious predators on and below its surface, and their fellow contestants. This edition of the contest has a twist: one of the contestants is an infiltrator who has her eye on something bigger than the prize. Who is she and what does she really want?    I was mad when #1 didn’t wake up and finish and got knocked out of the competition and this issue my other favourite well let’s not talk about what happened to her because while it was pretty epic, epically gross and somewhat graphic which I kind of loved, but I’m done rooting or maybe I should root for the traitor who isn’t whom she appears to be though I doubt she’ll end up dying in this book.  Something tells me that she’s going to win it all and seize control of the power and do something even more epically disastrous.  Gut feeling and all.      I wasn’t going to read this because I had preconceived notions, which is a mistake on anyone’s part, but this is what I do and I read it and absolutely loved it, so why is that?  Well the plot & story development that we see through how the sequence of events unfold as well as how the reader learns information is presented exceptionally well.  The character development we see through the dialogue, character interaction as well as how we see them act and react to the situations and circumstances which they encounter helps to flesh them their personalities.  The pacing is superb and as it takes us through the pages we become more embroiled in the intrigue and drama.    How we see this being structured and how the layers continue to emerge, grow, evolve and strengthen is strongly rendered.  How the layers open up the avenues to be explored and how much depth, dimension and complexity to the story is positively amazing.  The drama we see as well outside the competition really takes this to that place it needs to be.  How everything works together to create the story’s ebb & flow as well as how it moves the story forward is exceptionally well achieved.      What can you say about these interiors except that this is so classic Cho.  The linework is impeccably strong and with the varying weights and techniques that we see creating the attention to detail that we see.  Because of the very nature of the story you cannot have just blank backgrounds so what we see expands and enhances the moments beautifully.  They also work within the composition of the panels to bring the depth perception, sense of scale and the overall sense of size and scope to the story beautifully.  The utilisation of the page layouts and how we see the angles and perspective in the panels show a masterful eye for storytelling.  The various hues and tones within the colours being utilised to create the shading, highlights and shadow work shows just this incredible understanding of how colour works.  Seeing the blues of the water, the shades of white in the suits and the marine life shows a skill of how to maximise the effect that colour has.     I can’t wait to learn the secrets behind number seven as well as the man trying to learn about her as well, hopefully the one that cracks her scheming wide open.  That there really is more than meets the eye here and that we don’t know what that is yet is some excellent writing inside and out.  The superb writing and the dynamic characterisation along with these stellar interior artwork keeps bringing us this story that intensifies with each issue.

Review: The Joneses #1
By Dustin Cabeal
Unfortunately, we’re going to spend a lot of time talking about this cover. What, the holy fuck is going on here? Who thought this photoshopped monstrosity was a good idea and that people would see it on the shelves and want to pick it up and buy it? For starters, the heads don’t match the bodies. The hair for the women are so poorly lasso’d around that it looks tragically bad. What is the dad looking at? What are the children looking at? Why is the mom so goddamn happy to be squatting awkwardly to put those leaves in the bag? I’m not done. Why do they have a wheelbarrow and garbage bags and why do none of the proportions exist on the same planet? Is scale not a thing we can do in photoshop? That wheelbarrow is fucking floating on that grass because it’s sure as shit not interacting with it. Here’s the biggest question, where did all these leaves come from? There’s not a goddamn tree in the yard to produce even a fraction of these leaves. Last one, who buys two different sizes of trash bags? The cover is enough for you to walk away from this issue. It’s front runner for the worst cover I’ve ever seen in my life. I wish that it got better from here, but it doesn’t really.
Michael Moreci is a writer I’ve never really been interested in. I’ve read a lot of his books, but there’s always something missing to really make his writing standout or be next level. It’s always just okay and that’s probably the kindest thing I can say about The Joneses which comes across as a knock off of Ordinary Family, which was a knock of The Incredibles… which is a knockoff of the Fantastic Four. That is to say that it’s about a family with superpowers fighting crime.
The people with powers seems to be limited to one city and the community is big/small enough to really hate these mutants, sorry I mean super powered individuals. It’s big enough that there’s plenty of banks to rob and money to be had which the local police are totally handling on their own without any assistance or interest from the government. The family is on the verge of divorce. The wife doesn’t want them to use their powers, but she’s losing control of her own. The son seems to have the strongest ability but is bullied constantly at school. The daughter has superspeed and the biggest chip on her shoulder ever. Teen angst is the name of her favorite perfume. Then there’s the dad that clearly wants a divorce because he wants to play hero, but he sucks at it. Meanwhile the community watch is coming for their perfect lives!
Everything about the story is typical. It’s TV script waiting to be picked up by a network that needs their answer to the superhero phenomenon. The characters are generic and as deep as the descriptions I wrote for them. The story spends its time on the wrong things like the son being bullied or the community meeting and extraordinarily little time having the family communicate as a family. They’re just angry with each other, but we can only assume it’s the “no powers at the table” rules the mom has created. The son that’s bullied is literally just told “we’ll call the school but stand up for yourself.” The son has the most potential to turn into a villain due to his shitty family that all only care about themselves.
The artwork at times is good and other times a little broken. I’ve included the final panel minus the dialogue, so you get the idea.
I’m pretty sure she’s looking at the cover.
There’s a lot of inconsistency to the characters designs. The daughter looks the same age as the mom at times and the mom’s head shape changes every single time, she’s on the page. The costumed parts seem to be Alessandro Vitti’s strongest moments, but the book spends the most time with them out of costume. The artwork is decent and doesn’t detract from the story. It elevates it as much as it can, but there’s just a lot of filler to the issue. The lettering on the first page could have used a perspective check as it’s going straight across the page, but the bench is going at an angle. Trivial things like that stand out and detract from the story.
I don’t really like bashing on books like this, but with this being my second AWA title and not being terribly impressed by the first series I read, I hoped for more from this one. The generic plot is nothing special and the characters are frankly unlikable. If you’re going to do the family superhero story, you may want the reader to like the family. Instead, I’m hoping they stop yelling at each other long enough for me to get a good night’s sleep. Sadly, the only reason I read this comic was the terrible cover. I just wanted to write the entire review based on that because I can’t imagine someone spending 4 bucks on this with that cover attached. Maybe there’s a variant cover… wouldn’t be a first issue without one, right?
