I'll always find it incredible that in their use of the the tropes of the genre they take place in, The Cornetto Trilogy more effectively uses these tropes than any "straight" movie from the genres. Their use of jump scars come to mind first.

I know Batman Forever is critically panned, but, I like it? I mean it's not great, but it's a ton of fun. Ridiculously cheesy of course but, I don't know. Then add the fact Tommy Lee Jones is just unhinged and doesn't give two shits? Brilliant. Also, I think Val Kilmer is a really good Batman. Not so much a Bruce Wayne, but I blame the writing for that. There is no reason Val wouldn't of been able to play a great Bruce.

I'm just hearing about Late Night with the Devil starring David Dastmalchian because Shudder and IFC got the exclusive rights, and it sounds pretty fun. I was reading about it on Bloody Disgusting.
Tumblr media
No release date has been announced just yet, but we can expect a theatrical release followed by a Shudder streaming debut soon. The film premiered earlier this year at SXSW. I wrote in my review out of the fest, “Late Night with the Devil captures the chaotic energy of a late night show, embracing the irreverent comedy and stress of live television with a pastiche style. It’s a clever trojan horse for a surprising horror movie that goes full throttle on unhinged demonic mayhem. “The ingenuity, the painstaking period recreation, a riveting performance by Dastmalchian, and a showstopper of a finale make for one Halloween event you won’t want to miss.” - BloodyDisgusting.com
And then when I was looking on Letetrboxd, I found a review that made it sound even more interesting.
This was such an awesome concept, the whole movie is made as if you're watching an episode of a 1970s late night talk show, with the 4:3 ratio, ad breaks and everything! - Letterboxd.com

One wonderful side effect of the 70s talk show framing device of Late Night with the Devil, is how quiet all the scenes are. No informing music, and no blasting stings. Just actors getting to act.

I absolutely loved The Passenger (2023), and honestly I only have one real complaint.
The movie leaves a lot of things up to interpretation, but obvious in a way that you can fill in the blanks. Which I love. However, I think the movie should of ended with them sitting on the curb outside the diner. The preceding scene I find to be unnecessary. What is said in that scene was implied in the confrontation moment inside the diner – he is changed by this day, and the ending of the movie was redundant.

I completely agree with not tagging something if you are out right shitting on something, or just venting.
However, if someone is giving an honest review, critique, or criticism? I am all in favor of tagging that. Good faith reviews and criticism are just as important to the art as love and affection.
When you are into something, you have to accept this as a part of the whole. You don't have to agree with what someone says, but there is nothing wrong with finding reviews you don't agree with in the tags.

It has always boggled my mind when I hear Benicio Del Toro talk about how it was hard for him to find work after Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – how his performance scared off casting people.
You are literally in the industry of actors acting, and someone delivering a convincing performance makes you think they are really off their rocker? That's fucking baffling.
It should speak to how good he is.

Saw Late Night with the Devil
And I liked it a lot, but didn't come without complaints. A movie with this type of gimmick really needed to be filmed with film, and not on a Sony Venice. Everything to try to make it look like old television was done in post. They did as good of a job as you could with it, but for someone who has watched a lot of television from that era, it was definitely off. The use of CGI for all the effects really pulled you out of the experience as well. Shooting this project in digital was already stretching it, then even more digital work further removed you from what they were trying to accomplish. There was also a lot of modern technique with the physical camera work itself. That being another aspect that took you out of this world a bit. That being said, just taking the work for what they gave you, no complaints at the people operating their equipment. Also the use of AI art... ehh. I know they had real artists and they did the editing work with the AI art, but I ask why did you even go that route when you had real people working on it? On a positive note, the acting and the story was really good. It was a lot of fun and felt pretty authentic on that side of things. Jack, Lily, and Carmichael stood out the most. I can see Ingrid Torelli (Lily) getting a lot more work after this. And it was GREAT to see David Dastmalchian in a leading role. I've never not enjoyed him in anything I've seen. He's is ab absolute delight. In closing, I definitely recommend this, flaws and all. I'm going to watch it again in a few days because a lot of things always read better on a second viewing.

I never remember Alfred Molina is English. In my mind's eye, he is established as North American because all the things I saw him in growing up, he was doing North American accents. So, every time I notice he's English again, it's like a mini mind blow.

When someone (rarely) asks what is my favorite Cornetto Trilogy movie, my immediate answer is, “Well it’s not World’s End.” And not that World’s End is BAD just, far down from Shaun and Fuzz. Then between those two, my favorite all depends on the day you ask me.

If Mystery Men (1999) had come out in maybe 2013, I think it would of been a hit, as opposed to the unfortunate flop that it was.
I love that movie.

You ever notice in movies and TV shows when someone is being loaded into am ambulance, no matter what for, there is always a crowd? I've seen people getting loaded into an ambulance in real life many times, and no one gives a shit. Unless they're driving by in a car, for some reason. I get it though, it gives production value to the scene. Look at all these extras.

I love finding continuity errors in shows and movies. Not in an OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE THEY LEFT THAT IN type of way, just as a little extra bit of enjoyment.

I personally don't give a shit about spoilers, but I know a lot of people do...
In my mind, if I'm on the internet it's my fault if something is spoiled. So for me, the appropriate time is real time airing. If you didn't see it in real time, that's on you. However, I try to be nice for the people that follow me. So I don't know honestly, what people consider proper.

Does anyone "hate" when a phone vibrates on TV or in a movie? My phone is always on silent, so I instantly reach for my phone.
