No one from a country that has a high level of female infanticide should complain when the kids that were spared grow up and don’t give them grandkids. 

A couple in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand are suing their only son and his wife for not giving them a grandchild after six years of marriage.

Sanjeev and Sadhana Prasad, 61 and 57, say they used up their savings raising their son, paying for his pilot's training as well as a lavish wedding.

They are demanding compensation worth nearly $650,000 (£525,000) if no grandchild is born within a year.

Their son and his wife do not appear to have commented. 

The highly unusual lawsuit was filed on grounds of "mental harassment".

Mr Prasad said he had spent all his savings on his son, sending him to the US in 2006 for pilot training at a cost of $65,000.

He returned to India in 2007, but lost his job and his family had to support him financially for more than two years, the Times of India reports.

Shrey Sagar, 35, did eventually get a job as a pilot. His parents say they arranged his marriage to Shubhangi Sinha, now 31, in 2016, in the hope that they would have a "grandchild to play with" during their retirement.

The parents say they paid for a wedding reception in a five-star hotel, a luxury car worth $80,000 and a honeymoon abroad.

"My son has been married for six years but they are still not planning a baby," Mr Prasad said. "At least if we have a grandchild to spend time with, our pain will become bearable." 

The couple's lawyer, AK Srivastava, told The National that the couple had demanded the money "because of mental cruelty".

"It is a dream of every parent to become a grandparent. They had been waiting for years to become grandparents."

The couple's petition, filed in Haridwar, is expected be heard by a court on 17 May. Their son and his wife do not appear to have commented.

Niet echt hoopgevend, in aanloop naar het EK, maar zeker weten dat de VJF (met Koen voorop), op het bekende pers-moment, altijd met een goed-nieuws show op de proppen komt ;-). Ik kijk er al naar uit.. !

En dan is er, met het oog op de Olympische kwalificatie, ook nog het ingewikkelde, en dus boeiende spel van de 'continentale quota'.

Momenteel is Amber Ryheul geplaatst voor de Spelen dankzij de zogenoemde "continentale quota". Inderdaad, ongelooflijk eigenlijk, want sinds het moment van de waarheid is aangebroken (zeg maar 25-Jun-2023, datum vanaf wanneer de WRL-punten niet langer gehalveerd worden) heeft Ryheul in 11 tornooien nooit meer dan 1 overwinning/tornooi behaald, en 6 own in totaal... En dan moest ze naar Perth in Australia vliegen opdat die éne overwinning daar een 7°-plaats zou opbrengen... Dus ja, ongelooflijk, toch ?

Hier in Antalya, 'buiten-stappen', 'grip avoidance' en 'passivity', het had allemaal niet veel met judo te maken, en na 2'12"min was de draak van een wedstrijd voorbij in de 1/32-finale tegen Yerin Jung (°96; Kor; 25°WRL; 2x 3° AK'22 & '23; 3° GSL Ulaanbaatar'22; 5° GP Odivelas'24). Ook in Odivelas eerder dit jaar verloor Amber (°98; /-52kg; 29° WRL) van de Koreaanse.

Nu, in die lijst van 'continentale quota' (CQ) staat Sami Chouchi (°93; /-90kg; 32° WRL) op 47p afstand; [per land kan maar 1 judoka zich plaatsen via CQ]. Een achterstand die hij relatief éénvoudig kon wegwerken door hier in Antalya zijn 1/16-finale te winnen (waardoor een score van 160p zijn huidige laagste score van 112p vervangt). Maar ook dat is nog steeds geen garantie, want het onderscheid 'Male/Female' blijft, ook voor continentale quota; m.a.w. zolang 13 Europese mannen in die lijst (niet rechtstreeks geplaatst) beter presteren dan Sami, dan kan Amber zich met een lager punten-aantal toch nog altijd kwalificeren ten nadele van Sami; maar belangrijk ook weer voor Amber is dat Mina niet uit de lijst van 17 rechtstreeks geplaatsten /-57kg tuimelt, want dan neemt zij gegarandeerd de 'continentale quota' van Amber over.... Wordt dus zeker vervolgd... Verslag Sami: - 1/32-fin: tegen Mariano Coto Bersier (°00; Arg; 61° WRL), judoka van WCup-niveau, maar toch 3° op de PAO-kampioenschappen'23. - 1/16-fin: tegen Angel Antonio Gini (°01; Par; 267° WRL); verloor in 2023 twee maal tegen de voornoemde Mariano. Sami wint beide kampen, maar sneuvelt in 1/8-fin tegen Rafael Macedo (°94; Bra; 10° WRL)

Ondertussen op dag-1 geen geluk voor Jorre Verstraeten (°97; /-60kg; 13° WRL); in zijn 1ste kamp (1/16-fin) vecht hij tegen de welgekende Tornike Tsjakadoea (°96; Ned; 22° WRL); 3-3 stond het in hun onderlinge duels, al dateerde de laatste kamp wel al van 2019; Jorre leidt met waza-ari dankzij een knappe sumi-gaeshi na 2'31"min, maar krijgt 4"sec voor tijd het deksel op de neus met een 3de shido voor een valse aanval; in alle objectiviteit niet geheel onterecht, al is het sneu dat die éne beweging besliste over winst of verlies: (01s3/00s1).

Op dag-2 vocht Belgisch kampioene Alessia Corrao (°02; /-63kg; 97° WRL) op haar beurt een verdienstelijk tornooi en werd 7°, tot op heden haar beste senior resultaat ooit. 3 overwinningen brachten haar in 1/4-fin tegen een veel te sterke dubbele vice-wereldkampioene Miku Takaichi, ook gekend onder haar meisjesnaam Miku Tashiro (°94; Jpn; 6° WRL); deze laatste verloor wel onverwacht (ondanks totale dominantie) haar 1/2-fin met seoi-nage tegen latere winnares Jisu Kim (°00; Kor; 23° WRL), en werd uiteindelijk 3°. Alessia verloor, zei het verdienstelijk, haar repechage tegen Iva Oberan (°99; Cro; 25° WRL; hier 5°).

Begrijpen wie begrijpen kan, maar op dag-3, naast Sami Chouchi, ook nog Karel Foubert (°99; 66° WRL) in de /-90kg. Toverde in 2023 met wat gunstige lotingen 2x een 7°-plaats op een WTour uit zijn mouw (o.a. hier in Antalya), maar ondertussen - in 2024 - is het dus wel money-time en staan er sterkere judoka's op de mat; zoals Tristani Mosakhlishvili (°97; Esp; 17° WRL), die 3 weken terug 2° werd op de GP Linz.

Matthias Casse was ongetwijfeld een aandachtig toeschouwer daar in Antalya (neemt enkel deel aan het trainingskamp). Hij zag Olympisch kampioen /-81kg Takanori Nagase (°93; Jpn; 10° WRL) op strafpunten winnen (weliswaar verdiend) zowel in 1/2-finale als in finale tegen respectievelijk David Karapetyan (°00; Rus; 37° WRL) en François Gauthier-Drapeau (°98; Can; 6° WRL). In 1/8-fin versloeg hij ook Sharofiddin Boltaboev (°95; Uzb; 26° WRL) met shido (00s1/00s3 na 05:43).

Juniper was born into high society here in Anchorage. Thanks to her parents who were sharks in the attorney vein; helping the higher-end businessmen win over the little guys. It wasn’t something she understood at such a young age, but what she did know was: Keep your voice low but your head held high. She grew up in a household of competition. Not only between her parents with their respective careers, but also between her older brother, younger brother, and herself in the ways of academics and sports. No one would ever want to be around the family on Friday night game nights. And honestly, Juno couldn’t really blame her friends for that. Thinking back, she wonders often if this is where her need to speak up for herself came from. Each Riggs sibling was the top of their grade. Juniper found that the more she was in school and learning about the world, the more she felt alienated in high society life. She started to not attend galas and she started to let her hair down and throw caution to the wind when she hit her middle school and high school years. Though her beliefs changed, she still held education to a high degree of importance and never slacked in that field of her life. Rebelling against her parents was not what anyone was expecting from her, let alone her choice in career. Though, the lawyer aspect was a given (all Riggs siblings turned out to be lawyers), they never expected her to go against businesses and corporations and stand with the individuals who genuinely were being fucked over. Juno attended Harvard Law, and graduated with high honors. She went on to debate and go up against her own family in court through her career. Sometimes there were draws, other times she rung them dry. Recently, Juno came back to Anchorage in order to figure out if she wants to continue being a lawyer, or abandon the life chosen for her to pursue singing and songwriting full time.

Juno is a force to be reckoned with. Sharp as a whip, she tends to cut deep with her words and is highly aware of it. Basically, just don't debate her, okay? On the other hand, she's loving and full of life. She loves to strum at her guitar and come up with music - especially if she's feeling quite overwhelmed with emotions. She's also one who contemplates the universe and life at a deeper level. She plays minor gigs here and there, but she genuinely believes she has potential to make it big. Juno is a free-spirited type of character, and one can find her at karaoke nights as well as on the tops of tables at the local bar. She's very minimalist. If one were to go into her residence, there would only really be a ton of books and some photographs. She's basically not materialistic.
