This one is for the sprouts 🌱
Tumblr media
Foreign agent plots invasion of neighboring nation with help of religion-fueled WMD, claims resulting total chaos and devastation was “not my intention”. How glib.

= Solo Duty: Midgardsormr=
Realised I never posted this before I got sick.
I'm reviving my sprout journey comics (as soon as this stomach bug goes away) and while I have a list of moments from the game, feel free to ask my impression or experience with any part of the story and who knows maybe I'll make something out of it (no promises tho).
All my comics are made possible with the support of my patrons

You know how your WoL, after the events of ARR, after that loooong banquet cut scene, still has to travel quite a bit to reach Camp Dragonhead?
Consider-
—-
They could’ve just gotten on their trusty chocobo and ran as fast as that bird’s legs could possibly handle… But they don’t. Their mind isn’t their friend at this moment. They’re tired, so, so tired. They walk, hastily enough to let out laboured breaths with every step. Sometimes they almost run, but always stop just before the pain in their hip comes back in its entirety. That fall there upon the banquet floor is to thank for it, and it doesn’t want to go away. Tears stream down their face as their mind circles back to the scene in the sultana’s chamber, back to the massacre at the banquet, back to all the friends lost. They shake their head just to realise that hurts as well. Their temples are burning with the heat of a million fires and they hadn’t even noticed.
They finally reach Camp Dragonhead, walk to the main building and just before opening the door, they collapse on the steps in front of it.
Their thoughts and body both feeling far too heavy for them to carry on forward.
A fallen hero, unworthy of calling themselves the warrior of light.
Their mind wonders to the deepest pits of hell before they hear a familiar voice. The voice is worried for them, and they can feel the warmth of hands on their cheeks. As the warmth leaves them, they open their eyes just to frantically look for its source, wanting nothing but for it to come back. And there he is, lord Haurchefant, with his warm hands reaching elsewhere and disappearing from their view as they feel themselves getting lifted away from those cold steps and closer to that handsome face. They consider kissing it, lifting their own hands just to hold it closer as they press themselves as close as humanly possible to him…
Haurchefant proceeds to bring them to his room and feeds them chicken stock and hot cocoa for the next week….??? Maybe probably????

How the Scions failed Alphinaud.
(Note: I am still in Stormblood, so no spoilers please. ❤️)
And while I'm on the subject can I just take a moment to say how incandescently angry I get for Alphinaud sometimes?
The Crystal Braves had bad idea written all over them from the start. (It's funny to me because of how much it's like the Inquisition in Dragon Age, a paramilitary organization funded by powerful socioeconomic interests that answers to no sovereign nation, except that the Inquisition for all its flaws wasn't being run entirely by a precocious sixteen-year-old.) The question about where the money is coming from is set up pretty early and it's not overly subtle, Alphinaud is just like "Whatever, it'll be fine," and nobody really presses it. And yes, Alphinaud is really overconfident at this point in the story, but the thing is, Why wouldn't he be? He's got every single adult around him telling him he's a prodigy and a genius and basically Louisoix reborn and everything he's doing is a great idea and moreover that it's his duty to Eorzea to keep doing what he's doing!
And I just cannot come down too hard on him for how bad everything goes, because someone, any of the actual adults in the room, including all the Scions and the Warrior of Light, should have taken one look at this situation and gone, "Hang on a minute." And not one of them did, because I think all the Scions were too caught up in their own unhealthy hero complexes to realize that they should not be allowing a teenager to take on this kind of responsibility for the fate of three nations. Instead they saw Alphinaud acting like them, emulating the adults he admired and respected, and they went, "He's doing great."
And now he has to live with the consequences. Did Alphinaud need a humbling experience somewhere in his growing up years? Probably. Did he need it to be one where people died because of his decisions? He did not. I think Alisaie really had the right idea when she said, "I can't just be Louisoix's granddaughter, I have to find my own path, or at the very least I need to understand who my grandfather was and why he did what he did and the consequences of it, before I decide to follow in his footsteps." But Alphinaud. Oh, Alphinaud. He thinks he already knows who he's meant to be and what he's meant to do, and none of the older and wiser people around him ever see fit to tell him that maybe he too needs to find his own path.
I love the Scions, I love all these characters dearly, but they failed Alphinaud so badly here and honestly I haven't really seen any of them truly acknowledge that yet. They've all got other problems, it's true, but still... rather than a handful of loyal Crystal Brave proclaiming that they totally still trust their sixteen-year-old commander, what I really want is for someone to say to Alphinaud, "I'm so sorry. We should never have put this on you. We should have seen what could go wrong and we didn't."

Time for a bit of FFXIV speculation :
Tumblr media
I realize that a bulk of FFXIV players have already completed the whole of the story arc ( probably more than one time ) so please don't hold it against this 🌱 while I think-out-loud about my feelings towards the story so far even if I'm still experiencing ARR.
( also pls no spoilers, but I appreciate encouragement and assurance my questions will get answered. Lol )
Somethings have been picking at my brain since I encountered them. One of which is when the Amal'Jaa are surprised we do not fall to tempering stating our "soul must belong to another" and then Ifrit himself says that while he can see we do not already serve a primal that the paragons warned the Primals about the godless-blessed one's aborrent existence. Does that mean that while we may or may not be tempered by a primal we are controlled/ guided by some 'other' thing outside the paragons or the 12. If we are being Guided/controlled by what we don't quite understand but is big enough or strong enough for the paragons & primals to worry about —- should we be worried about its overall motive & can it truly be benevolent and omniscient with that much power? Does it seek to follow through with its own agenda regardless of the plight of others.
Tumblr media
The reason I say this is because of another encounter that seems to stick in my mind. A point in which Y'stola chastises Merlwyb for breaking the treaty with the Kolbolds. She basically says and has a solid point (that I had already thought of before this scene) when she tells Merlwyb that this constant war with the Kobolds was of her own doing in letting Lominsans break the treaty. The kolbolds are just defending themselves. Or course there is an a back and forth that ensues but the point being both Merlwyb and the Kobolds are doing what they believe to be right for justice sake and for the sake & safety of their people.
Tumblr media
I extrapolated this further. What makes us, the scions, so sure that what WE are doing is right? Because a giant crystal says so? We kill gods/primals and move against another society that perhaps (outside of their military) could possibly be wanting freedom and peace like those of Eorzea do. What of the Garlemald society? They can't be all military. Its not hard to believe that there are some suffering at our hands because of what their military decided to do, not them. I guess essentially what I'm saying is, how are we so certain we are not falsely lead to believe what we do is just and right when what we do is kill gods/primals, murder tribes on sight because of who they are and pushing our agenda on them. There is point where there is a kobold says that those of their community at war with us do not represent the whole of their society. … and I hear that the crafting questline with the different tribes show us that not all of the their race want to fight. So is it hard to reason that perhaps not all Ishgardians hate dragons? That not all dragons hate the elezen. That not all Garleans follow their military and that perhaps what we perceive as right may only be a perspective of one cosmologic being with enough power to have us believe in what they want?
on top of the fact that the Ascians say ' if we knew more, that we wouldn't be fighting with them.... that we would basically understand’ ... leaves me feeling 🤯
What the hell is going on? I know mother crystal is our main guide... but tbh I'm feeling pretty sus about things and honestly the motives of Hydaelyn. I realize they are presenting her as a mothering ‘goddess’ but I’ve always been the type of kid to ask “why”
The answer of ‘just because’ … ‘because I said so’….. ‘because this is how it’s always been done’ ….. ‘because I’m the boss’…..
Has NEVER sat well with me. As a kid or now. With my parents, with teachers, with management or upper level bosses. I need to know the why, the motives, the implications or consequences, the benefits. I need this information because the end does not always justify the means. Especially if on a core level I disagree with it and feel there is an alternate route.
That probably says more about me then I intended but yeah… lol
... anyhow.... thank you for letting me just babble on about the beginning of this ( I'm sure to be ) wild ride we all know and love called FFXIV.
