Just as I thought I was truly alone, I spotted another girl staring back at me from a far off tower.
Day 5: Before the Beginning / After the End
I hc that before Ruri and Rin properly met each other, they would stare at each other from across Academia, gazing into their respective tower's window

deep in her eyes (i think i see the future)
Summary: two different women, two different definitions of the same concept
Rating: G
Ships: Mai Kujaku/Isis Ishtar
Author’s note: written for @5daysofygofemslash. taking the prompts trapped & freedom and trying to make something of them.
read on ao3 / consider supporting me on ko-fi / join my discord (18+)
When her parents died, Mai found herself trapped in life. It was proof that nothing lasts forever, and that she’d better get used to the harsh reality of life. She’d been shuffled around, no one wanting an extra mouth to feed but more than happy to take her inheritance to spend as they please. She’d felt trapped in her life, unsure of where to go and how to process what happened to her. It came with the territory at this point: Mai Kujaku was unwanted. It was why she took up as much space as she could, and why she started to scheme. If no one would give her what she needed, she would take what she wanted. And she wanted cars that went fast, designer fashion, and perfume. She’d marked her cards with it, and found a skill that no one else seemed to pick up on. It was as easy as breathing, even on the days when she was unsure of where she was going. She was trapped in life, but she’d be damned if it meant that she’d give up.
Isis found freedom the day her father died. The day her father died, she put on the Millennium Taulk and saw the future play out in front of her. It should have been constricting, but instead, it was soothing. She was sure of her path. Isis saw the entirety of the tournament play out, and she was steadfast in her resolve. Breaking the future, getting her brother back, and making sure that the path they were on was a path worth traveling was important to her. Isis Ishtar was a prodigy, and she never needed anything more than that. And everything came to a head on that blimp when Isis realized she’d still been trapped within the future that the Millennium Taulk had shown her. As Seto Kaiba shattered the future around her, Isis discovered that she suddenly felt… free.
On that blimp, Mai thought she'd been trapped in life until she was trapped inside a living nightmare. When she finally awoke, she’d awoken to her friends. However, before Mai could leave, Isis caught her. “I…,” Isis started, clearly uncertain what to say. “I normally have an idea of what I’m going to say next here.”
Prior to her experiences in Battle City, Mai might’ve laughed at the idea of real psychics existing. After all, that was her con schtick. Yet considering the very real torture she’d been put through, Mai felt no need to mock the idea anymore. Clearly Isis had known something this entire time. “Don’t bother trying to apologize for your brother,” Mai said, a scowl crossing her beautiful features as she recalled her Duel with Malik. “You know, I should’ve won that Duel.”
“I don’t disagree,” Isis said, a soft smile on her face. “It is not your fault that fate had greater plans.”
“Fate, huh,” Mai asked, crossing her arms across her chest. She glanced up towards the sky, as she thought back upon how she’d once described life. Life was something to be trapped in, that no amount of money could free her fully of. She was shackled into it, so she might as well try to enjoy it. And she’d thought she’d been doing well. At least until Jounouchi came along with his stupid friends and ruined it all by reminding her of what she’d been trying so hard to avoid. “I heard you lost to Kaiba. If you could see the future, how’d that happen?”
“It seems I was unprepared for what he’d be willing to do for victory,” Isis said with a light shrug, and a soft smile. Despite being unsure of her footing here, Mai was willing to have this conversation. As much as she wanted to apologize for her brother’s actions, Mai had already dismissed it out of hand. That left only one possible route through, then. “Are you still going to do tournaments after this, Ms. Kujaku?”
Mai barked a laugh, shaking her head. “Call me Mai,” Mai said with a wink that caused warmth to flood to Isis’s cheeks. “No need for the formality with me, hun.” She flicked her hair out of her eyes, and then her gaze was intensely upon Isis. “Yeah, I’ll probably do a few more tournament circuits. Fancy perfume doesn’t pay for itself you know. Though tell you what.” Mai scrawled something on a piece of paper and handed it over. “Call me if you ever need a proper girl’s night.”
And while Isis couldn’t see the future anymore, she thought for a second she might see the future in Mai’s eyes.

A Dangerous Rival
AU where Season Zero carries on into Duellist Kingdom. Written for @5daysofygofemslash day 5: Canon Divergent | Alternate Universe.
Read on AO3
When Miho first met Mai Kujaku on the cruise ship to Duellist Kingdom, Miho saw how she caught all the boys’ eyes: she was a dangerous rival. Miho called her obasan, aunt, to denigrate her age - but instead of being angry, she laughed and said that Miho must be very young to call her that.
When Yugi and the others later discussed the rivals on the ship, Miho sniffily remarked how unimpressed she was with Kujaku’s condescending manner. Honda actually hesitated before agreeing with Miho. A dangerous rival indeed.
When Mai duelled Jounouchi, Miho was quick to denounce her aroma strategy as underhanded. Even if it was clever.
When Mai offered them a meal, Miho started looking at Mai - not her effect on the others. This woman hadn’t come expecting other people to give her food or shelter: she’d brought them herself. This woman had complete self-confidence. This woman turned heads, but didn’t need to turn heads.
When Mai lost to the Player Killer, Miho was scared and didn’t understand why. It was good that a dangerous rival was kicked off the island, right?
When Yugi duelled for Mai’s star chips, Miho cheered extra loud.
When Mai tried to repay Yugi those star chips, and Yugi refused, Anzu challenged her to a duel. And Miho felt a stab of guilt that Miho hadn’t been the challenger. Or was it a stab of jealousy? Miho wasn’t used to being stabbed by feelings like this!
When the tournament was over, when the finalists were leaving the island, when it was Miho’s last chance - Miho went up to Mai.
Miho bowed deeply. “Please teach Miho how to duel!”
Mai was surprised. “You don’t Jounouchi or Yugi to teach you?”
In truth, Yugi had tried to teach Miho before - but back then, the mass of rules and card text had just been too much for Miho to sustain interest. But now was different.
“Miho wants to understand how Mai duels. Mai’s duelling is different to Yugi’s or Jounouchi’s. And…”
The words were hard. Miho blurted them out as quickly as possible. “Miho wants to spend more time with you!”
And then Miho blinked in shock: she had accidentally said ‘you’ as anta, which was informal to the point of rude.
But instead of being angry, Mai laughed: it was a form address she often used herself. She ruffled Miho's hair. "I'll see what I can do."

in my stomach is butterflies, the beautiful kind
Summary: yusei's been trying to tell aki something with flowers, and she doesn't quite understand what she's been trying to say.
Rating: T
Ships: Girl!Yusei Fudo/Aki Izayoi
Author’s note: written for @5daysofygofemslash. this wound up being quite a bit longer than expected oops. i wanted to write a femslash version of yuaki for a while now and here we are! femslash yuaki. the scientists who did this were mad, mad i tell you.
read on ao3 / consider supporting me on ko-fi / join my discord (18+)
Really, what was a girl supposed to do when bouquet after bouquet showed up at her house? How does Yusei afford these, Aki thought absently as she looked over the flowers that Yusei had sent with a blush forming across her cheeks. Did Yusei know what these flowers meant? She pulled the bright yellow flower out of the massive bunch, and was still stunned by how well it paired with the deep burgundy flowers. Two colors that Aki wouldn’t think go together, yet seemed perfect in the bouquet when paired with the alstroemerias, marigolds, and snapdragons. Altogether, a bouquet suggesting an undying, protective love rooted in a deep friendship… or more, if she accounted for the bouquet that had contained red roses and honeysuckles and Queen Anne’s lace.
At this point, Yusei’s bouquets had decorated every room in her home, and her father had jokingly asked when he could expect Yusei to ask him for her hand in marriage. Now that was an embarrassing question to hear from her father. At this point, there was really only one way for Aki to find out what Yusei meant by the countless bouquets that had been sent her way. Each new bouquet made Aki all the more awkward around Yusei. Her father was laughing over the new bouquet. “I’ll make sure to pick up another vase on the way home,” Hideo said, causing Aki’s flush to deepen. “You should go by Yusei’s and thank her for the flowers.”
“Yes, papa,” Aki said, handing the bouquet off to her mother, who was careful to make sure the flowers were delicately handled. “I should probably take my homework with me as well. I’ll be back by dinner.”
Her mother and her father exchanged a glance between each other. Her mother then smiled softly at her. “No worries if you don’t make it back in time,” her mother said, handing Aki her backpack. “If you wind up deciding to have a sleepover, call us and let us know.”
The walk over to Yusei’s had felt much shorter than usual, and Aki’s heart was racing. She had a plan to confront Yusei at the game she was playing. Of course, all her plans of confrontation died the minute she actually came face to face with her. Well, face to face was not an accurate description. Yusei was talking to Bruno about something - probably related to the engine they’d been working on for the past two days. Last time Aki had been here, Yusei had been so engrossed in the project that she couldn’t bring herself to interrupt. That and well… Yusei had looked so cozy with Bruno. And Aki understood, really.
Bruno was so tall and handsome, and Aki could understand if Yusei and Bruno were… Except this time, instead of being able to slip out as if she hadn’t dropped by, Yusei actually turned her head slightly. The furrowed brow Yusei had vanished, and a wide smile appeared across her features. “Aki,” she said, warmth in the tone that filled Aki’s stomach with butterflies. “Did you get the flowers I sent you?"
Aki felt the blood rush to her cheeks and Bruno glanced between the two. “You know,” he said, tapping his chin. “I think I know what this engine needs. Tell you what, Yusei. I’ll head to the store while you and Aki catch up.” He winked at Aki, and Aki looked away from Bruno. “You two have fun!”
With that, Aki and Yusei were left alone. Which meant that Aki could finally… “I hope I got them right,” Yusei said, pulling her thick leather gloves off and setting them aside. “I wasn’t sure if…”
“So you are trying to tell me something with them,” Aki blurted out, her eyebrows stitching together. If Yusei wasn’t sure what the flowers meant, then maybe Aki had been overthinking for nothing. It could, in fact, just be a set of flowers that Yusei happened to think looked nice together. “I was going to…” She humphed, thinking over what to say next. It was risky to accuse a friend of being in love with you, after all. “Are you…”
Yusei’s stare was so intense that Aki lost her train of thought. She’d never noticed just how purple Yusei’s eyes could be under certain lights. It almost reminded her of wisteria. “Am I…” Yusei was getting closer, until she was standing right in front of her. Aki’s eyes traced out the hard biceps under Yusei’s skin, the deep tan, and… Aki glanced up too quickly away from Yusei’s chest, and now she could tell there was a sparkle in Yusei’s eyes. She didn’t need to look at her lips to know Yusei was smiling and yet she couldn’t help herself. As always, they were full, and a soft brownish pink that made Aki think of stargazer lilies. “Aki, you can ask me anything. I’ll tell you anything you want to know if I know the answer.”
Aki placed her hand over Yusei’s, trying to find the courage to simply ask the question she so desperately wanted to know the answer to. Instead, she found herself asking the easier question. “You’re trying to tell me something with the flowers,” Aki said, and her voice had dropped to a whisper, as if this was a secret to keep between just the two of them. “What is it?”
Yusei delicately placed her hand on Aki’s cheek, and Aki couldn’t help the warmth that flooded her cheeks. “Aki,” she said, and Aki enjoyed the tender way in which Yusei said her name. “Isn’t it obvious?” When Aki shook her head, Yusei sighed. “I was hoping… Ah, well.” And then Yusei’s lips were against hers, and Aki gasped in surprise. Yusei’s lips were so soft, but Aki was more surprised by the taste - like cigarettes, black coffee, wintergreen, the bubblegum flavored lip gloss Yusei had stolen from Aki long ago (she’d kept it?), and something else entirely unique to Yusei that she could not explain. When Yusei parted away too soon, there was a flush on Yusei’s cheeks that matched Aki’s. “Does that answer the question?”
“You…” Aki said, trying to gather her thoughts back together. As much as she wanted to ask Yusei to do that again, Aki was unable to bring herself to do that. “You’re avoiding the question.”
“I thought I was quite obvious in my answer,” Yusei replied, and her hand was now on the rail, pinning Aki against it. If Aki tried to back up, she’d fall over. There was a fire in Yusei’s eyes now, and she seemed desperate for Aki to understand. “What is making it hard to understand what I’m trying to tell you, Aki?” Her hand was now cupping Aki’s jaw, her thumb running along Aki’s lips. And Aki’s mind was blissfully blank. “Please, Aki. You have to already know how I… how I feel about you.”
Aki’s eyes went wide as it finally sunk in. And Aki pressed herself to Yusei, a desperate kiss with everything she wanted to say poured into it. “I preferred you saying it with a kiss, for the record,” Aki said breathlessly when they parted. “Should I tell my parents I plan on spending the night?”
