What is Ethernet?

Definition: Ethernet (pronounced “eether net”) is a computer network technology which is used in different area networks like LAN, MAN, WAN. Ethernet connecting computers together with cable so the computers can share information. Within each main branch of the network, “Ethernet” can connect up to 1,024 personal computers and workstations.

Ethernet provides services on the Physical (Layers 1) and Data Link Layer (Layers 2) of OSI reference model.The Data Link Layer is further divided into two sublayers that are Logical Link Control (LLC) and Media Access Control (MAC),these sublayers can be used to establish the transmission paths and format data before transmiting on the same network segment.

Systems that use ethernet communication divide their data into packets, which are also known as frames. These frames further contain source and destination address, a mechanism which was used to detect errors in the data and retransmission requests.

History of Ethernet

Ethernet was developed over several years in the early 1970s by group researchers within the company Xerox Palo Alto Research Center (Xerox PARC) including, in particular, Robert Metcalfe (who founded later 3Com company). The goal the research project was to connect networked computers and laser printers. Xerox Corporation filed a patent on this technology late 1977. In 1979, companies Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC), Intel and Xerox combined to improve Ethernet and together published the first standard in 1980: Ethernet Blue Book sometimes called TEN (after the initials of the three companies). Finally, the IEEE this technology became standard in 1983: 802.3 was born … well before the 802.11! A little abuse of language, it is called Ethernet 802.3 standard. The format of DIX Ethernet packets is slightly different from the 802.3 Ethernet packets, but the two can coexist on the same network. The algorithm used to resolve collisions — that is, when two workstations try to speak at the same time — is called CSMA/CD, and works by forcing both workstations to back off for random (and hence probably different) intervals before trying again.

Advantages of using wired Ethernet network

In this, wireless NICs are used for connecting the computer instead of a cable and these wireless NICs make use of radio waves for communicating between the systems and furthers these NICs are connected with a wireless switch or hub. This technology requires maintenance, but it is more easy to use.

Wired Ethernet network, devices are connected with the help of a fiber optic cable which connects the devices within a distance of 10km. For this, we have to install a computer network interface card (NIC) in each computer. A unique address is given to each computer that is connected. So, for sharing data and resources like printers, computers, and other machines, Ethernet networking is used as it establishes a communication system. Un pezzetto di tecnologia dentro le modernissime reti 5G risale a oltre mezzo secolo fa e alla passione per il surf di un giovane professore di informatica particolarmente sportivo e innamorato dei panorami mozzafiato (e delle onde) hawaiani. Norman Abramson, scomparso lo scorso dicembre a 88 anni, era nato a Boston. Nella fredda città americana aveva studiato e iniziato a muovere i primi passi nel mondo accademico, prima di trasferirsi all’Università di San Francisco e, infine, alle Hawaii. Nel 1966 Abramson ottenne, infatti, la cattedra all’Università di Ohau dove insieme con Frank Kuo, proveniente dai Bell Labs, ed altri si mise a studiare una soluzione per il problema fondamentale dell’arcipelago: trasmettere dati via radio tra le scuole sparse nelle varie isole. In poco tempo i due misero assieme una soluzione versatile e potente usando materiali radio a basso costo: ALOHAnet.

Semplice è meglio

La loro idea era tanto semplice quanto ingegnosa e ancora oggi è alla base della trasmissione dei dati con il Wi-Fi, via satellite e con i telefoni cellulari. La tecnologia di ALOHAnet consente a più apparecchi di trasmette e di ricevere dei dati attraverso un unico canale condiviso usando radio a bassa potenza e senza un’elettronica complessa. Il vero punto di forza, infatti, sta nella semplicità della soluzione: se un pacchetto di dati non veniva ricevuto, l’emittente semplicemente lo inviava di nuovo. Questo ha consentito di spedire più pacchetti di dati in maniera efficiente, mentre la regola nelle apparecchiature complesse delle telecomunicazioni dell’epoca voleva che le trasmissioni fossero un susseguirsi di sessioni continue ed esclusive, che dovevano correggere in tempo reale gli errori di ricezione.

Un lavoro innovativo

Il lavoro di Abramson e dei suoi divenne il punto di riferimento anche per i giovani ricercatori che proprio in quegli anni stavano costruendo Internet negli Stati Uniti continentali. Secondo Vinton Cerf, che con Robert Kahn in quegli anni ha creato gli standard tecnici per collegare tra di loro i computer attraverso la rete Internet con i protocolli TCP/IP, “La soluzione di Abramason fu un’indea incredibilmente audace, una pensata originale dal punto di vista tecnico”. Buona parte delle modalità e logiche di funzionamento di ALOHAnet divennero così lo standard per le reti senza fili di oggi (e non solo). Tanto che nella progettazione delle reti 5G i ricercatori di Qualcomm, Ericsson, Huawei e delle altre aziende coinvolte continuano a usare il lavoro di Abramson.

Open Source

Il segreto del successo di ALOHAnet lo spiegò lo stesso Abramson alcuni anni fa: “Non brevettammo ALOHA ma decidemmo invece di pubblicarne il lavoro di ricerca: lasciammo cioè la tecnologia ‘libera’. Per me era la scelta ideale: ero troppo concentrato a fare surf per volermi occupare di brevetti e cose del genere.”

Ethernet la figlia di ALOHAnet

La rete ALOHAnet venne studiata anche da Bob Metcalfe, all’epoca giovane ricercatore neolaureato, che si recò alle Hawaii per lavorare con il professor Abramson. Metcalfe poi decise di mettere a frutto quanto imparato sulla trasmissione dei dati via radio in un ambiente completamente diverso: le reti via cavo. Partendo dal lavoro di ALOHAnet, infatti, Metcalfe progettò l’Ethernet, che non è solo un tipo di cavetto universalmente diffuso per esempio per connettersi al router di casa, bensì un vero e proprio protocollo di trasmissione dati molto complesso e flessibile. La forza dell’Ethernet sta nella capacità di far convivere più computer sulla stessa rete, facendo in modo che i blocchi di dati trasmessi da ciascuno arrivino a destinazione senza entrare in conflitto, senza cancellarsi a vicenda e soprattutto senza ritardi, capacità basata sulla ricerca di Abramson per ALOHA. L’efficienza di funzionamento delle reti Ethernet e la bontà commerciale del prodotto realizzato permise a Metcalfe di fondare nel 1979 la 3Com, che per molti anni fu l’unica a vendere interfacce di rete funzionanti. L’azienda è stata poi comprata nel 2010 da Hewlett Packard.

A Remote Connection To Your Pc - Free Method Exposed

One of the most requested items I hear from small business folks is accessing their work computer from a remote location. They don't want to pay the fees of services like GoToMyPC, Timbuktu, etc. They want a reliable and cost effective method to get to their data remotely. Most people assume that this type of thing is too complicated. I have news for you - you can do this. So, grab a cup of coffee, pull up a chair, and get ready to go remote.

Finally for your house network you will also need a network card to connect to the computer. The network card allows the computers to talk to each other on the network. Windows XP is great software to run your home network with. This is because it's simple to install, troubleshoot and configure to get your home network running.

If you are performing this type of installation for more than a handful of people, it is best to install this once on a Windows Server and share that printer to everyone. Normally it takes between 5 and 10 minutes to perform this type of install on each pc.

Once you have flashed the DD-WRT firmware onto your new repeater router, connect to it using you browser (generally 192.168.1.1). Reconfigure the IP address range to something unique, making sure that the subnet is the same. So for example, if the main router has an IP address of 192.168.1.1 configure the new repeater to 192.168.2.1 using the same subnet as the main router (i.e. 255.255.255.0). Make sure that DHCP is enabled at this point.

There are even stronger methods for ensuring security. A strong and robust security method is RADIUS (Remote Authentication Dial In User Service). Using RADIUS requires additional hardware and software. However, there are companies that offer RADIUS security as a subscription based service. The fees are reasonable and dropping.

For most of us, the install instructions need to be user friendly and easy to follow as this saves time and frustration when installing your new repeater. Generally, manufacturers these days provide easy to follow instructions. If the instructions are more complex, or you need them simplified, you might need a computer professional to perform the installation.

There are certain IP addresses which are set up by the factory as defaults. The IPs 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1 are two of them. The IP address 192.168.1.254 is default for certain home based broadband routers and modems. These include Linksys SRW2024 range switches, some 3Com OfficeConnect routers and ADSL routers from Billion. Though this is set at the factory, it can be changed using the software provided by the vendor for the management of the hardware and software associated. 192.168.1.254 is a IPv4 (private) network address. Though, any device on a local network can use it, only one device on that network should be using this address at a time. This is true of any IP address and is necessary to avoid IP address conflicts.

Let's begin! Locate the Reset button, a tiny hole (see the picture) on your router. It will be at the back of your router. Take a sharp object like pen or paper clip and insert it into the Reset hole (as shown in the picture). Press the button and hold for 20-30 seconds. Release it afterwards. You will see that all the light on the router will flicker and then turn off and come back on. Let the router reboot fully.

Theoretically, a repeater should be set-up in the middle of the rest of your wireless devices. In reality this may not be easy to do or exactly what you need. When you set up your repeater, make sure it is within the range of your original network. Once it's set up, make sure that the repeater new signal reaches where you wanted to use the wireless network previously but couldn't. You may need more than one repeater to cover your entire house.

Nevertheless, if the IP address contains only zeros, then click on the "IP address release" or "DHCP release" then select "IP address renew" or "DHCP renew" respectively. This is an important part of setting up DSL ISP process. If the zeros continue to appear, enable the "PPPoE" on your router before checking in the "Status" view to see if the login status appears to be connected. Otherwise, click on connect. By this hierarchy of steps you should be able to gain internet access using your Linksys router.
