This is part of a weekly series collecting updates from and relating to Gong Jun and Zhang Zhehan.

This post is not wholly comprehensive and is intended as an overview, links provided lead to further details. Dates are in accordance with China Standard Time, the organization is chronological. My own biases on some things are reflected here. Anything I include that is not concretely known is indicated as such, and you’re welcome to do your own research and draw your own conclusions as you see fit. 12-25 → Hsu Fu Chi posted four photo ads featuring Gong Jun.

→ 361° posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ QuelleVous posted screenshots of the data records for Lexus’s Instagram stories, which show that the claims that he posted that something good was about to happen on 2021-12-24 were untrue. It’s also worth noting that Lexus never includes mentions / photos of Zhang Sanjian in his regular Instagram posts, only in these stories that become unavailable after 24 hours. Additionally, Lexus’s claims of owning an apartment in Beijing are untrue.

→ Gong Jun posted a promotional image advertising that he would be appearing in Hunan Satellite’s New Year’s gala program on 12-31. Caption: “The new year is coming soon, #What attitude will you enter 2023 with#? At 7:30 p.m. on December 31, come to Hunan Satellite TV’s New Year’s Eve party, and let’s welcome the new year together!” His studio reposted this with the added caption: “The end of the year has come, and the new year is coming. Welcome 2023 with boss @ Gong Jun Simon!”

→ BEAST posted the full commercial for their New Year’s product line. Fan Observation: Gong Jun did the little hand twirl while bowing again.

→ Gong Jun flew to Changsha to record a variety show and the New Year’s events. Fan Observation: In the footage of both him arriving at one airport and leaving the other one, he was holding his phone in the same position that inspired the LLD handsign.

→ Fresh posted a promotional video spoken by Gong Jun.

→ Rocco Liu, the editor of GQ magazine, posted a photo of himself and Gong Jun to his Xiao Hong Shu.

12-28 → Fresh posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ BEAST posted a behind the scenes video of Gong Jun from their current ad campaign. (1129 kadian)

→ Canada’s Fairchild Radio primiered a third stolen song. The airing included a sound clip spoken by Zhang Zhehan which those listening mistakenly believed to be new—a haizhe openly admitted to creating this using two clips from 2020, claiming she did not intend for this misunderstanding.

12-29 → Gong Jun posted photos of a bracelet that Tiffany & Co. gifted to him on his Weibo and Instagram. This was reposted by Tiffany.

→ Gong Jun changed his Instagram pfp to one of the silhouette photos he posted on 12-10.

→ Bluebird posted a video exemplifying audio deepfakes, which shows the song Wake Me Up sung by Aloe Blacc being artificially rendered into multiple other languages while still maintaining the artist’s vocal idiosyncracies. There has been some question of if the songs that I’ve been referring to as stolen are even by Zhang Zhehan in the first place.

→ The Weibo TV Series Awards 2022 placed Dream Garden as #1 for best contemporary urban drama, and Gong Jun’s character Lin Shen as #1 contemporary urban drama character.

→ Kangshifu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ A short video was posted for the Weibo New Year’s Party of Gong Jun wishing everyone a happy New Year: "Hello everyone, I am Gong Jun. 2022 is nearly over. How were you this past year? 2023 is coming, wishing everyone a Happy New Year." [quoted translation]

→ Hogan tweeted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ Gong Jun’s studio posted in response to the TV Series Awards: “Thank you to everyone who supports [Dream Garden], loves Lin Shen, and walks bravely with Lin Shen in the new year!”

→ The third stolen song was scheduled to be released on this day but was delayed to 01-06, no reason given. One of Xie Yihua’s accounts posted a photo of a thermometer to imply that Zhang Sanjian has COVID.

12-30 → Kangshifu posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

12-31 → A Twitter space was held reviewing the events of the year. [recording] [written notes]

→ Gong Jun’s studio posted four photos from the rehearsal the performance that would air that night. Caption: “The old year is coming to an end, tonight welcome the arrival of the new year with joyful singing. Boss @ Gong Jun Simon's energy continues to load, let's go together tonight!” Fan Observation: Gong Jun reportedly had milk tea delivered to fans who were waiting outside for him, as well as to the staff at the venue.

→ Hsu Fu Chi posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun.

→ LockNLock posted a photo ad featuring Gong Jun with a very sweet caption: “No matter how you say it, I also want to give you an award for self-discipline, single-mindedness, humility, honesty... You who have excellent qualities! I wish you all good luck in 2023, success, health and happiness forever!” (1314 “forever” kadian) This was the last day of his endorsement with them.

→ Gong Jun posted nine photos of himself to his personal Weibo. Caption: “See you tonight, I will be full of joy for the new year!” His studio followed shortly after with two more posts [here] and [here] of photos from this photoshoot, captions: “New Year’s Eve surprises gradually took shape, saying goodbye to the old year and welcoming the new year, and sharing a wonderful night with boss @ Gong Jun Simon , see you tonight!” and “Set the alarm clock and wait on time, the boss @ Gong Jun Simon is ready to go, let’s go to a new future together tonight!” Gong Jun also shared nine of these photos in his Instagram story, and eight to his Xiao Hong Shu, caption: “Happy New Year! See you tonight!”

→ REAL1640 posted nine previously unseen Word of Honor behind the scenes photos of Zhang Zhehan.

→ Gong Jun’s studio posted a video of behind the scenes footage from the photoshoot. Caption: “Both movement and stillness are suitable, and you can feel the unique fireworks of this city in winter. Bai Yu projects updates (Jan. 19, 2023)

News:

Bai Yu will be performing in a micro film and singing at CCTV's 2023 Spring Festival Gala. The show starts at 8 pm (GMT+8) on Jan 21 (Chinese New Year's Eve) and can be watched on Youtube.

Bai Yu will sing I Won't Extinguish in the Wind at 2023 China Internet Audio-Visual Gala. The show will be aired on 24th starting at 8 pm (GMT+8) on all major platforms.

The 1st Chinese TV Drama Annual Ceremony will be broadcast at 8:00 pm (GMT+8) on Jan 23rd on CCTV 1 and at 18: 30 pm (GMT+8) on Jan 28th on CCTV 8 and will be streaming on CCTV's online platform as well. Bai Yu is nominated for "Breakthrough Actor of the Year" for his role Xun Xu in The Wind Blows from Longxi and the final 13 awards will be revealed at the ceremony.

Take Us Home is set to be aired at Q1 of 2023. The drama has already obtained airing license last year.

Rumor (take it with a grain of salt):

Bai Yu is rumored to star in a tragic romance drama That Untold Story based on a novel of the same name by Twentine. The ML is a taxi driver/disabled undercover police and FL an antique restoration artist.

SpaceX, Game of Thrones & Anthem

In this latest marvellous and riveting episode we are going to first travel into the cold, quiet and overcrowded outer space. That’s right, we are going into earth orbit and visiting the ISS (International Space Station) where Space X has just docked the new Dragon Capsule. This is the next step in a flight to the moon in 2023, still trying to get a ticket if anyone has one. The capsule was only a test with a dummy aboard, and no, not Trump. Next up is the fast approaching final season of Game of Thrones – season 8 – with what is looking like a record breaking battle scene that took weeks to film. This is expected to be more epic than Helms Deep, even the extended edition. Then we look at the fact that Anthem is hard crashing consoles and systems around the world. Cue the music “Queen – Another One Bites The Dust.” That’s right folks, EA has struck again, and this time it gets personal with systems and consoles being bricked by this latest screw up. There is mention of compensation floating around, so hopefully word will spread before too many systems are wrecked. Then we have the games of the week, the weekly shout outs, birthdays, remembrances and events of interest from this week in history. As always we would welcome any feedback, suggestions or whatever. TTEOTM Creative Team: What else did they work on?

For those who are a bit underwhelmed by the summer drama options or still dreaming about TTEOTM! 😎

Kuk Kok Leung (Lead Director)

Kuk Kok Leung is a veteran director who started his career in Hong Kong's TVB. He's been nominated for the prestigious Magnolia Award and is known for wuxia and serious, warm-blooded historical dramas (he's adapted 7 out of 8 Jinyong novels). His works include...

He's also a frequent collaborator and producer on Johnny To films, including Election, Election 2, Mad Detective.

So you get the picture. He makes TV for men who are ready to bleed for their country. This all makes him a really interesting choice for TTEOTM (and tells you a bit about the ambition and creative vision of the producers), especially since all his more recent idol dramas were widely panned.

Wang Haiqi, Director & Action Director

We don't know too much about Wang Haiqi because TTEOTM is actually his directorial debut. He started his career in stunts and has worked as the action coordinator on Ashes of Love (2018) and Immortality (unreleased) alongside Luo Yunxi. He was also a stunts man/double in a bunch of Hollywood films, including Mulan (2020) and the Foreigner (2017) through the Jacky Chan stunts team.

He's responsible for most of the action/battle scenes in TTEOTM, and his experience working on films probably explains why the fight sequences are unusually cinematic for TV.

Luan Hexin, Art Director

Luan Hexin is a Magnolia Award nominated art director best known for Huanyu productions, including Story of Yanxi Palace, Winter Begonia, and Royal Feast. He's a serious art guy, as you can tell from this interview.

(Note: Huanyu is Bai Lu's management company. There is a rumor that Luan Hexin is part of Bai Lu's "dowry", but the parties have since clarified that Luan was brought in after she was cast.)

He's also an interesting choice, having never worked on costume fantasies before and better known for his authentic representation of the look and feel of bygone eras.

Huang Wei, Costume Designer

Huang Wei is one of the most sought-after costume designers working today, especially for xianxias. She started her career as a Vogue China editor and was in fact the person responsible for TTEOTM's Dunhuang-inspired aesthetics.

Her better known works include A Dream of Splendor (2022), One and Only (2020), Love O2O (2015), Back from the Brink (2023) as well as a bunch of highly anticipated dramas like Immortality and The Last Immortal. I'd like to think that after designing 40 mostly white costumes for Luo Yunxi in Immortality, she decided to go nuts on color with Tantai Jin.

Tsang Ming Fai, Makeup Designer

Tsang Ming Fai is a big name in the xianxia circuit. He and his team of “students" have worked on a large number of costume dramas, including Ashes of Love (2018), Love & Redemption (2020), Under the Power (2019), Noble Aspirations (2016), Sword of Legends (2014), as well as the... wait for it... unreleased Immortality and Luo Yunxi's currently filming drama Follow Your Heart.

He's sadly been receiving a lot of hate in fan circles over the heavy makeup in TTEOTM (which may or may not have been his call). What I do appreciate is his ability to help actors craft distinct characters with varied hair and makeup choices. For example you can distinguish between different Luo Yunxi characters and their personalities with Runyu's clean cut tie-back half ponytail (ethereal & straight laced), Tantai Jin's slightly brown hair, messy bangs and heavy eye shadow (dark & sickly), Chu Wanning's angular eyebrows and geometric hair puff (strict & proud).

He also excels at creating unusual, iconic looks even for side characters, e.g. Chen Yao's dark lipstick paired with gothic jewelry in Immortality and Chen Duling's retro updo in TTEOTM.
