October 20: Mr. Robot 2x12
Watched the finale of Mr. Robot S2 tonight. I... was probably too tired to really appreciate it, but here are a few notes anyway. Mostly about Dom and Darlene lol.
Seeing Elliot as Mr. Robot is so weird. Rami as Mr. Robot, I guess I should say.
So either Tyrell also recited the red wheelbarrow poem to someone else, or, and I assume this is right, Elliot passed it on to Dark Army. I feel like that’s the biggest immediate hint that this takes place in the past--later obviously they’re not at Coney Island but sometimes it’s hard to remember things from one scene to the next imo.
I don’t know if I have the brain for this.
Darlene. :(
What an intro, though. Great resolution to the cliffhanger of who died (not that it would have been really realistic for Darlene to die this early but like...anything is possible).
Santiago trying to be the bad cop. The Patriot Act doesn’t negate the Constitution for citizens like talk like you’re the smartest person in the room all you want Constitution > statutes is still how it works.
All these USA references--imo probably not what will age best from this show. “Characters like you aren’t welcome here.”
“We’re going to be best friends.” Well....she’s not entirely wrong, timeline aside.
I completely forgot about this whole Scott Knowles pretending to be Tyrell thing. Sooooo boring.
Maybe it’s supposed to be another personal thing that has greater implications politically but...idk he’s really only fucking with Joanna, who is boring and unimportant. I guess it could be a double fake out meant to make the ending more suspenseful. A lot of people had been arguing since s1 that Tyrell was another personality, something I always thought was batshit insane and unbelievable. However, just because he’s real in S1 doesn’t mean he’s still real. So, you have Elliot convinced he’s dead and Joanna convinced he’s alive, and then apparently proof he’s alive--you see him--and then a hint he may be dead--all of the evidence he was alive has been thrown out.
Doesn’t make Joanna any less boring though.
Back to the good stuff.
“Babe.”
“Just two crazy, wacky Jersey girls.”
Cisco might have been the love of her life :(
I feel like Darlene may finally be, if not Dom’s match, at least someone interesting for her for once. Some kinda challenge at least.
Dom has some physical evidence here and there but mostly she’s building her case by just breaking people. Flipping person after person after person. Fingerprints can be wiped off but everyone you encounter who remembers you...
“This is Olympus! We are Prime!” Ugh Tyrell stfu so boring.
On the one hand, that’s pretty dumb of them, putting all the paper records in one place. On the other hand, yay for print saving the day as I always say it will. (Well, almost saving...)
Santiago is trying so hard not to let Dom get anywhere. Too bad for him he’s up against the only actually smart person in the FBI.
“I know her. I am her.”
This scene is so good: the slow, unhurried pacing; the flickering lights; the music; the dramatic hallway walk; all the people amazed that Dom caught Darlene and is gonna show her everything; Dom’s speech; Darlene’s face; how the audience should have seen all of this coming but (at least in my case!) didn’t at all; the Romero reveal; the board itself. A masterpiece!!
And yet for all that they were so wrong about Tyrell. He really was not ever that important.
Trying to parse this convo between the hacker and Mr. Robot. Kinda...makes it sound like the hacker created the big picture and then created Mr. Robot in order to iron out the details and deal with the unpleasant stuff. Or assigned him that role. Mr. Robot who is perhaps farther from the real Elliot than the hacker is?
The stay in your realm thing...he has a certain role he was created to play, and now he’s trying to overstep those bounds.
I love how Elliot thinking Tyrell isn’t real and then being proven wrong is like this big joke on all the people who thought he was always a personality lol.
“I’m the only one who’s real” is literally a psychopathic thing to say.
I also like the subversion and twisting of S1′s finale. Instead of Elliot possibly shooting someone else, he is himself shot, and instead of the big reveal being that another character is his alternate personality, it’s rather that another character is NOT.
I feel like the hacker is already getting to this place where he’s....becoming too dominant. Overstepping his bounds and purpose.
Mr. Robot blinking out but Tyrell staying the same because he is, louder for those in the back, real.
“You did this to yourself.” But not literally. Iconic.
So the ending originally kind of made me wonder if Angela had been a double (triple?) agent the whole time, and ALL of this was in service of whiterose...but I don’t think so. I might have tried to follow the thread of that theory once but I’m pretty sure it doesn’t track. I think she was turned by hypnosis in part 1 of the finale, and then the Dark Army got her number to Tyrell, but he’s never met her before and doesn’t know who she is, other than another contact he’s supposed to trust.
Extra scene! I really was 100% convinced that they were talking about time travel when I first saw this lol. I feel utterly played but not in a bad way. It’s like..the show is smart and so you have to try to think of things in a complicated way. But sometimes they just aren’t that complicated! There isn’t always a conspiracy. Tyrell wasn’t sending secret gifts to his wife. He also wasn’t a hallucination or extra personality. Romero wasn’t shot by the Dark Army or the FBI. Time travel is not possible--or even on the minds of some of these characters. Angela wasn’t a double-triple-super-secret-agent-spy: she was trying to get justice for her mom, genuinely, sincerely. You’re primed, just as the characters are, to see conspiracies, to see complexity, to believe everything and everything, but some things just are as they appear on the surface. It’s never knowing which is which that fucks you up.
At any rate, I’m taking a break to finish the 3% before watching S3, which  have seen before, but don’t remember very well. Very excited for the 3% though!

For the End of the year asks. 1,5,8 and 14
1. Song of the year?
My most listened to song on Spotify was “What Is and What Should Never Be” by Led Zeppelin but I had so many favorites...basically anything new from Taylor Swift, and lots of The Cure, The Smiths, Phoebe Bridgers, and so much more.
5. TV show of the year?
I actually have only watched 2 (3 if you count Tiger King) shows that came out this year, even though like 5000 shows have been popular and they weren’t ones I’d necessarily recommend (Love Victor and A Teacher, both on Hulu), but I have been watching a ton of The Office, rewatching Mr. Robot (which ended last year), and I’m on s2 of Westworld!
8. Game of the year?
I’m not a big gamer so literally like N-64 Mario Kart is all I play ajkndfs OOPS
14. Favorite book you read this year?
Oooh kinda hard! I didn’t read many books this year, but I loved almost all of the books I read. I think this is how I rank my top 3:
The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald
Call Me By Your Name by Andre Aciman
The Stranger by Albert Camus/Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn
let’s talk about 2020 (and feel free to tell me your answers to these questions!)

Homecoming S2: The most fun you’ll have with an evil company this spring
Tumblr media
Enlarge / Name? Date of birth? Home address? “I don’t know.”
YouTube/Amazon Prime
Warning: This story references happenings from Homecoming S1 but tries to avoid any major spoilers for FX’s Devs and the new second season of Homecoming.
Sometimes Hollywood at large seems to embrace the infamous Google strategy: make two of everything and see what sticks. Who recently asked for twin dog-as-best-friend-but-end-of-life tearjerkers? And did audiences need dual “Nikola Tesla races to make electricity” biopics starring beloved heartthrobs? (In a world where The Prestige already exists, probably not.)
This spring, streaming TV got in on this strategy, too. A pair of shows centered on secretive, shady startups—companies doing almost otherworldly things that piqued government interest but really complicated an employee’s life—each arrived with star-boasting casts and filmmaking pedigrees behind the camera. Like a dutiful TV reviewer, I watched the first four episodes of both series. Despite each having oodles of style, one felt opaque and unnecessarily complex, like piecing together a puzzle without knowing what the full picture was at the start.
And the other is Amazon’s Homecoming, which hits Prime with seven new episodes this weekend. (Apologies to FX’s Devs, which I’ll likely never finish.)
youtube
Janelle Monáe stars in Homecoming season 2, coming soon to Amazon Prime.
Still stylish
Though Homecoming lost some high profile talent ahead of S2—Julia Roberts’ character doesn’t appear and Sam Esmail did not direct any of these episodes—you wouldn’t call this show depleted after watching this new run of episodes. In her first starring TV role, Janelle Monáe is as captivating as ever. She plays a woman named Jackie who is struggling to remember how precisely she ended up alone and passed out on a boat in the middle of a remote lake. And instead of Bobby Cannavale representing our main corporate cog for the Geist behemoth, Hong Chau (the actor behind Lady Trieu of Watchmen) reprises her role as Audrey. Her corporate exec of few words was last seen as a pseudo-big bad at the very end of S1, but she gets fleshed out quite a bit here.
Jackie’s journey and the dynamic between Jackie and Audrey might be the most thrilling parts of these new episodes, similar to how the conversations between Roberts and Stephan James as Walter ended up as S1’s most riveting part. The only disadvantage for Chau and Monáe comes from circumstance: Roberts and James had the benefit of Geist’s overall product and scheme being a mystery that our two main characters learned and navigated together with the audience. This time around, audiences have a lot more info, taking away a bit of the show’s intrigue and tension. If story felt secondary at times to the performances for you in S1, that dynamic will be amplified here.
The chemistry between its leads, of course, was only half of Homecoming’s initial appeal. Mr. Robot creator Sam Email had generously applied his small screen cinematic lens, using different aspect ratios, lens filters, and a robust palette of ’70s film homages. New director Kyle Patrick Alvarez did previous work on Starz’ visually inventive Counterpart, so he appears to have the chops to carry over some of S1’s same visual language (with the emphasis on “some,” given how inventive Esmail has always been). For Alvarez, S2’s premier in particular feels delightfully Hitchcock-ian, as Jackie at times seems engulfed by large pines or encased in a spooky motel straight out of Twin Peaks.
As for the story unfolding in these episodes, well, that’s where Devs comes in.
Janelle Monáe stars as a mysterious woman who wakes up in a rowboat on a lake with no memory of who she is.
Geist Emergent Group, the company behind the Homecoming Initiative, might be involved.

Stephan James reprises his S1 role as Walter Cruz.

Also back: S1’s Audrey (Hong Chau), an assistant at Geist Emergent Group.

Remember that S1 post-credits scene? It’s relevant to S2.

The memory-erasing drug is gearing up for mass production, it seems.

Chris Cooper plays Leonard Geist, who begins to have doubts about his company’s business.

Prestige isn’t the point
Understanding the plot of Homecoming S2 absolutely requires a “previously on” montage. Rather than Shea Wigham detectiving into a new case (sidebar: nothing ever improves by losing Shea Wigham), these episodes revolve around the same basic happenings—just from new perspectives. We’re again watching the Geist signature product being cultivated and applied, the government still contracts with them to do unsavory things, Walter Cruz still endures some less-than-ideal circumstances.
As such, any mysteries (like, why is Janelle Monáe left out to sea again?) are a bit narrower in comparison to S1. We’re not watching plot gain momentum toward a grand conclusion; we’re largely learning about more of the plot’s mechanics, the stuff previously in the background.
This sounds bland when you spell it out like that, but some of the best television shows in recent memory have deployed this basic concept to an extent. Watchmen gave viewers multiple perspectives of the same events in consecutive episodes; Better Call Saul is entirely about the mechanics of how one bad guy lawyer grew into his sleeze. Homecoming is not of the same caliber, but this show knows the story it’s telling and commits to exploring it from new angles. S2 has a confined plot and commits to revealing it stylishly, succinctly (with this and I Am Not Okay With This, half-hour drama remains my favorite bingeable format), and with new likable characters. (In addition to Jackie and Audrey, Geist himself makes an appearance, played by Chris Cooper of “rage-y neighbor in American Beauty” fame.) This season ain’t cracking TV’s Mount Rushmore or Alan Sepinwall’s Top 20 of 2020, but it’s thoroughly enjoyable (think more Stranger Things S2 than Mr. Robot S2).
That bit of reflection kept taking my mind back to Devs. TV critics generally seemed smitten by that show’s ambition and perplexed by how small Homecoming has set out to be in S2, but I’ve come away feeling the opposite. Devs’ hourlong episodes could be a slog, as the show didn’t seem to know whether it cared more about the kinetic personal action (our “hero” employee trying to get the upper hand and figure out her sinister employer) or about some possibly magical machine with greater philosophical implications. The former is the stuff that kept you going through early episodes, but the latter had so much time devoted to it that you couldn’t help but feel “this must be the point” even as the series didn’t seem to understand how to translate it for everyone sticking with the show. So after four episodes, I stopped, and no “oh, you have to stick it out ’til the finale!” rationale could suck me back in.
Homecoming, on the other hand, never feels overly weighty or chore-ish. The defined focus and faster run time (you could watch all of Homecoming’s two seasons in roughly the same amount of time as Devs’ one) means no sequences feel obviously aimless or like filler. The show has presented what Geist is doing as fact without some mind-occupying takeaway, so instead the series stays most interested in the action. After four episodes, I wanted to see how everything played out and had to stop myself from just “play next”-ing through the whole thing. (Amazon outlined a number of things reviewers couldn’t reveal, and it seemed a number of those things cluster in the season’s second half—temptation avoided.)
To borrow the Hollywood twins analogy once more, one of these evil corporation shows aimed for prestige glory and ended up as The Equalizer. The other knew it wanted to be a competent b-movie the whole time and delivered John Wick. And if being parked on my couch looking for a new show to watch mid-pandemic has taught me anything, it’s that sometimes it’s OK to put the pressure for ambitious greatness on hold for a minute and just enjoy something. As you’d expect, Janelle Monáe guarantees a certain base level of that.

August 2020 TV Roundup
TV shows I watched this month:
Utopia (S1&2)
The Hour (S1&2)
One Day At A Time (S1)
Electric Dreams (S1 e1-3)
Mr Robot (S1 e1-3)
Star Trek: Lower Decks (S1 e1-3)
Lovecraft Country (S1 e1-2)
My thoughts below (contains SPOILERS)
Utopia (S1&2)
Wow, okay so just cancel the show right there like that... okay :/ ANYWAYS! This show definitely had some big think points and amazing characters, but what I LOVED the most was the soundtrack!!! Cristobal Tapia De Veer hit it out of the park with this soundtrack and I know it’s going to be music I go back to listen to continuously. Also the visuals of this show were very bright and fun which contrasted nicely with the dark material. And this show did get dark - there is a lot of killing and this show isn’t afraid of killing kids point blank either. One thing I didn’t like about the show was the romance between Becky and Ian. At times Ian came off as stockerish and they tried to play it off as romantic which no.
Favourite Character: S1 - Wilson Wilson - His arc throughout the show is probably the most complex and tragic and while I don’t agree with the decisions he makes, I can understand them and all in all he’s a unique character that should have got more focus. He loses the spot of fav character in s2 because I can’t forgive him for killing Ian’s brother and he wasn’t as central to the plot. If there was a season three I have no doubt that would have been his time to shine :( S2 - Pietre... yes I’m cringing at myself. HE KILLED SO MANY PEOPLE IN S1 WHAT ARE YOU DOING? It’s because they showed baby Pietre isn’t it? and then next you see him being all happy with a family and ugh. Also, he’s like a one man army, and in my defense, S2 really wanted you to like him or else when his dad tries to kill him it would have had no emotional impact. Also the show ends with Pietre waking up and that’s it. Everyone’s been taken away by the Network and he wakes up and.... WHERE IS S3??? (side note it seems some people really like Lee, which??? idgi. Wilson 100% deserved to shoot him in the head and I fully support him for that)
The Hour (S1&2)
Another show that just cancelled after two seasons for no reason other than to piss off fans. Why????? What I loved about this show was  the character dynamics!!! Ugh the pining!!! It was also snappy, fast paced and fun. S1 was the better season in my opinion and had a tighter story. S2 while still good, had some clunky bits and I didn’t like how they handled issues on race and homosexuality. For once I agree with the BBC heads in the episode that you shouldn’t air facists!! They can’t be reasoned with and even if they are ridiculed on air, their views are still be spread. Also fuck Freddie for putting Sey in a position like that without warning. And when the whole homosexuality political thing came up it got completely pushed aside with Hector attacking Laurence for hitting women, which yes is a big issue, but as Freddie pointed out, Hector backed away in the end. That coupled with how Isaac kept on being homophobic throughout the show annoyed me. I also really disliked Hector. All of his stupid problems annoyed me and I have no idea what Bel saw in him in S1.
Favourite Character: S1 - Freddie Lyon - the pining, hardworking, brilliant journalist. It’s impossible not to fall in love with him. S1 very much centres around Freddie with the s1 climax being when he is on camera and addresses the nation before being shut down. It’s a beautiful arc for him and I absolutely love it. Also, in S2 when the elevator opens and we see his back I squealed even though I knew it was going to be him, but that whole shot of him returning was just soooo goood! He gets dropped down in s2 because frankly a lot of what he does in that season annoys me - like the above mentioned airing of fascists, how he treats his wife, and just the fact that he got married after only knowing her for like a couple of months :/ Also him not caring when Rosa died and being rude to Bel for caring pissed me off. S2 - Bel Rowley - while s1 centered around Freddie, s2 centered around Bel and she really shined this season. Unlike last season she’s not head over heels for Hector (thank god) and is standing on her own two feet... while being ridiculously head over heels in love with Freddie lol. I like how she didn’t let that stop her and had a short thing with that enemy producer, even if he did turn out to be an absolute asshole. Also thank you Bel for caring when Rosa died. Rosa deserved so much better. Anyways Bel deserves all the career success and happiness in her personal life. (Perhaps it’s a good thing there was no s3 since if it went according to pattern it would be Hector’s time in the limelight and NO THANK YOU. Also Marnie deserves so much better as well and she should get the opportunity to find love with another woman)
One Day At A Time (S1)
The first season is fun and lighthearted with at times being too on the nose, but most sitcoms are so can’t really fault it for that. The later half of the first season got more emotional and I liked how they handled Elena’s coming out. The pro-military stuff is overbearing and I wish it wasn’t included. Like when Penelope had that ‘emotional’ speech to get a chiropractor for her shoulder I was just like I can’t sympathize with you right now because you were part of a system that purposely ruined other people’s lives in other countries.
All in all though, it’s a show that’s nice to binge watch and doesn’t require brain power which sometimes you need a show like that.
Favourite Character: Penelope Alvarez - aside from her pro-military stuff she’s a well-rounded character who has realistic struggles with faults that are relatable.
Electric Dreams (S1 e1-3)
All the episodes are stand alones, but since they are all stupid I’m not going to waste time giving my thoughts on each one. I’m also not going to watch the rest of the episodes given how much I disliked the first three. What is the point of these? IDK - it’s like Black Mirror, but stupider. Also, from the ones I watched, for sci-fi settings it was way too white. In addition, having a white woman take on the avatar of a black man is not a good look. Also in the robot one, having the only unhuman robot be a black woman with the rest of the robots acting like humans being white is not a good look either. And the third episode is such a piece of boring shit that it doesn’t deserve my time.
Favourite Character: Whoever Janelle Monáe played. She was the only good part despite the shitty role they gave her.
Mr Robot (S1 e1-3)
The first three episodes felt like set up so I’m not sure where it’s heading. Despite it being on for years I don’t really know much about the show except for there’s hacking involved. We shall see if I will stick with it.
Favourite Character: At this point Frankie Shaw... I have a feeling she won’t be around for long though. She feels like the Jenna from Suits character. I don’t even like her with Elliot. Elliot’s cool too, but he should have somehow let Portia know what an asshole her boyfriend is and maybe then she wouldn’t have had her bank account hacked. Be a better friend Elliot!!!
Star Trek: Lower Decks (S1 e1-3)
Cute and better than I thought it was going to be which is nice. It is very heteronormative though. Like every episode they have to remind you that these characters like people of the opposite sex. It’s a quick watch though and I’m looking forward to seeing what other shenanigans this crew get up to.
Favourite Character: Beckett Mariner! Easily the best part of the show. She’s a badass who cares for her crewmates and doesn’t care for the rules and I am really looking forward to seeing how she develops.
Lovecraft Country (S1 e1-2)
Not going to lie, I was very confused watching this show so far. Especially episode two as the whole magic group thing seemed to come out of no where and I don’t understand how they have powers. Also it almost all takes place at night and the lighting of the show is so dark that I can’t see what’s going on half the time :( Will have to wait and see with this show.
Favourite Character: Letitia Lewis - ngtl part of it is because she’s gorgeous, but I do think her character is going to have an interesting journey and Jurnee Smollett really brings the character to life.

October 5: Mr. Robot 2x11
The penultimate S2 episode today. I am actually quite tired and I don’t think I gave it quite enough of my attention so I have neither many notes nor much of an understanding of what I just saw. I kinda feel like I’m falling asleep a little.
This is probably going to be incoherent.
Weird little mantra in the beginning. Imo setting up the episode as existing entirely, not just in Elliot’s story line, in a sort of liminal, dream-like space.
Poor Angela, just randomly kidnapped. She thinks by the feds.
Dom: We might have a leak! Me: You definitely do and you’re speaking to it right now!
It’s a trap, it’s a trap, it’s a trap trap trap.
That actually is utterly nuts, a loan of that size from a foreign government. Like watching this now makes me appreciate both how bizarre some of the plot points are and how believable the bizarre can become in extreme situations.
“Biggest global crisis in history.” Whoo boy howdy.
This sound track is amazing though. “Davy! Davy Crockett!”
“Inconspicuous man” and “inconspicuous woman.”
This whole Angela adventure feels like a lucid dream.
The book Lolita just... sitting there. Inconspicuously.
Honestly I would hate the Angela story in this ep if I didn’t like, and more importantly trust, Sam Esmail so much. Like he’s proven by now he can pull it off. He has the range. I’m willing to go along with the ride.
“You can’t create your own currency!” Can’t he though?
Yet again, Price is killing it.
I admit I do not actually understand blockchain lol.
Everything about this scene is so evil.”Defeats can still be profitable.”
Angela’s so done with all of this.
And now back to Dom. A surprising number of tattoos! Take a nap, Dom.
I see that bottle of Jack next to Alexa.
“Alexa, are you a lesbian too?”
I wonder if these are Alexa’s real answers. Like only Dom’s questions are scripted and they just bought a real Alexa and let it answer.
Oh no..........the fish.......
whiterose!
Major burn with that door speech. She says Angela “should have been dead 90 days ago.” What happened then? 5/9 or something else?
“Take humanity to the next level.” Sounds deep and all--except she’s utterly insane.
Ah, the red wheelbarrow bbq!
Such a complicated code.
Angela looks brainwashed. The tv in the lawyer’s house just went back in time with the power flicker.
“Wait, he’s me!” Lol yeah Elliot, you tell yourself.
This poor cab driver.
“...Bon soir Elliot.”
Lol Tyrell: “Stop being so awkward, I’m not a hallucination!”
I’m not a Tyrell fan but I like how they brought him back so abruptly, like no big reveal or anything, he just gets in the car, because he doesn’t need a big re-entry, because he was never dead--Elliot’s just unreliable, even to himself.
And after all that, no indication that Darlene is not in fact dead! But Cisco is.
So upon some, sleepy, reflection on the Angela thing. The best I can figure is whiterose hypnotized her. It’s not generally hard to believe she could convince her of anything--Angela is very vulnerable with certain easily exploitable weaknesses. But why an entire episode devoted to the period before what seems to be the actually important part of the conversation, and not the moment when whiterose provided her with whatever proof turned her into such an acolyte? In other words, whatever converted Angela happened off screen. But I can’t believe we were shown this, instead, for no reason.
And what we do see is Angela kidnapped, disoriented, subject to the uncanny valley for hours, then presented with this very charismatic person poking at all her vulnerable spots--her mother, the Washington Township disaster--hope. That’s the point where we stop getting to watch their interaction, but there’s a lot more. And whatever else is said, it’s not actually proof of time travel. So it must be something ultimately random and unimportant but the REASON Angela believes it is what we do see in these scenes.
Or something idk I’m falling asleep.

September 29: Mr. Robot 2x10
Finally returned to Mr. Robot!
So I thought the significance of Elliot’s computer being taken in the ‘previously on’ was that it might have ended up in the hands of the FBI lol. Assuming way too much coherence in law enforcement.
Lol Tr/ump’s latest book. “The things I have on him.” You spill, Terry!
The idea of China annexing the Congo really is nuts. But like... not so nuts you can’t imagine it happening.
How depressing it is that after all of the Terry Colby stuff, he’s ultimately... doing just fine. Writing books and still with favors to call in.
“Am I the most powerful person in the room? The answer needed to be yes.... It still needs to be yes. That’s what drives me.” I guess that’s what it all comes down to in the end. Truly very depressing.
I had the volume all the way up so I could hear the dialogue over the sound of myself eating chips and that was a mistake. Damn that music’s loud.
Uh Joanna is so boring. I know she’s supposed to be able to, like, hold the whole scene with how fascinating she just inherently is but... I do not care.
Ooooh okay, that’s the guy with the fake leg, who was walking up the stairs at the beginning of the season! Did not put that together until now.
Darlene the mob boss.
Dom! There’s my girl.
So I guess that guy’s injuries were from a car accident, then. That’s what I understand is happening.
I feel like this Santiago scene makes more sense knowing he’s a double agent, because Dom is making so much sense and he’s just not even listening. He knows that this is a good way to get rid of Cisco, who he also knows needs to go. But then on the other hand, am I making it too complicated? Does the Dark Army need this help? Idk. Incompetence also always makes sense as an explanation for anything.
The “Evil Corp discount,” and the whole ECoin sublet, was one of the more ingenious ideas for S2.
Poor Elliot, having to shop by himself now.
I had in my notes “I love Darlene so much” but I don’t know what it’s referring to. I think taking the minion to the ER.
Claudia Kincaid.
Darlene’s kidnapping story is so surreal. The way it’s shot, going between her and Elliot... mmmm love it so much.
Elliot is a creative problem solver. He isn’t even a better hacker than Joanna’s people, he’s just... smarter.
“No one in the world uses fax anymore except cops.”
People always want to tell Elliot things, probably because he’s so quiet.
They’re really going all in with the ‘involving the audience/making the audience a character’ thing huh?
Noooo!! Don’t go eat!! Don’t go to that diner! Noooo!
Cisco would have been better off getting arrested in his apartment. I mean at least Dom wouldn’t have killed him.
Francis Shaw :(
Imagine being that nurse lol. That random dude is a mastermind hacker/terrorist? It’s more likely than you think.
This diner set, though. The lighting. The frame of the window.
And then the creepiness of Angela and Elliot on the subway train.
I can’t remember if he knew she knew he started fsociety or not lol. Is this a big revelation for him? Is it uh supposed to be a big revelation for us?
My biggest thought was, and I know she’s not but, “that’s the kind of question a person wearing a wire would as.”
Dom! is! so! smart!
Oh, Angela... She’s so often separate from the rest of the story lines but when she does intersect with them again it’s also so good and so worth the wait. Similarly, Elliot/Angela is a beautiful lowkey ship. Like you shouldn’t watch just for them because you will be disappointed, but every time they get together it’s like now they’re the only ones who matter.
Darlene loves Cisco so much! She’s so soft with him.
I don’t remember that museum thing either and I don’t know if I’m supposed to or not.
Man that ending is just as good the second time. Like even knowing what the suspense will lead to--I still feel the suspense! Putting in a literal countdown in the center of the screen was fucking genius.
I really do think you can judge a show by how it winds up its seasons, and this is so, so, so good. Just excellently made. Very satisfying.

September 15: Mr. Robot 1x09
Tired and barely up for it but watched more Mr. Robot tonight.
Episode 9 and we’re finally getting the resolution of the cliffhanger from the S1 finale lol!
I feel like most people caught the prison thing but a lot of people didn’t predict what he was in prison for but I did so yeah, I am smart.
Grand larceny of the dog. A very expensive dog. But she is very good, and worth it.
I don’t really get why Elliot is appearing virtually at his trial.
The only thing that did surprise me of the reveals here and in 1x07 was that Ray was the warden. I didn’t really know who I thought he was.
Leon appreciates a good library.
Either Leon was also convicted very fast, or he was in for some other purpose before Elliot’s conviction because he is obviously not a ‘real’ prisoner.
Or he was converted in prison.
Elliot and Darlene are still the Most Important. The scene of them outside the prison is so soft and beautiful.
Angela is so smart, luring the secretary away. She would have been a good fsociety asset.
And lol forever at that guy not being able to tell the difference between two completely different pretty blondes.
Right I forgot about the last cliffhanger with Cisco. Probably because he and Darlene get over it so fast lol. Mostly.
Mr. Robot was ahead of its time in recognizing the creepiness of people wearing masks.
The broken clock. Really laying on the time clues thick. The misdirection. Ish.
Elliot listening to his sister and her boyfriend argue. So awkward. Then dissociating. More awkward.
I feel like Mr. Robot is already somewhat submissive to the hacker, though. He takes over because he has to, because the person who’s supposed to be there, isn’t there.
Philip and whiterose are the best. Philip is just the perfect foil for her because he’s just so unimpressed. Their menacing styles are totally different. “Here comes the veiled death threat.” “Your little shootout in China.”
“I’d really see you lose than win myself” is the most dangerous attitude anyone can have.
The inherent eeriness of the subway.
Is that the real Nancy Grace?
Can’t believe it’s already early August.
Those brownouts were such a great narrative device. Mood setter.
“Why are you even using vhs? Because it’s cooler?”
Dom is so great. I’ve been missing her this ep. She’s hilarious, she’s creepy, she’s cute.
I can’t remember if I knew she already had Angela or not. I feel like if I didn’t, I should have. I mean Ollie’s shown up, there’s no way he didn’t immediately blab lol.
“He is a master.”
That’s the appropriate amount of Joanna for an ep lol. Five seconds at the end.
Super creepy and atmospheric ep. Very nightmarish: the scene in the subway, the brownouts, Dom talking about her dream, the threatening NRC deputy director... Scary scary.

August 31: Mr. Robot 2x08
Finally returned to Mr. Robot. Sort of had to force myself to... it was a good ep objectively but I had a hard time paying attention and getting into it.
Ah, it’s Ron’s Coffee again. I forgot how many flashbacks and call backs there were this season.
Same, Mobley. I, too, hate the iPhone.
Elliot, always so dramatic, even when he isn’t even there. People who thought that speech was supposed to be taken at face value just... really didn’t get it lol.
Where’s Dom on the FBI call lol?
Sure is hard not to hate the FBI.
I’m pretty sure it was Romero they were talking about, the 17th person under surveillance who is now dead.
Oh no Susan’s back!
Something so depressing about 4th of July karaoke.
Ugh, that guy deserved to be roasted like that. Roast away Angela. There’s such a particular betrayal in people who start out being nice and then turn on you (reminds me of Gideon’s death) and also in men who just have to go to the sexual comments when they’re being otherwise just generically mean.
Why does Susan think being Islamophobic is going to help her in this situation?
Angela singing karaoke is so sad. She’s such a sad character, sometimes I almost can’t stand it.
We could find Susan’s password in some convoluted way or perhaps she just wrote it down somewhere lol.
This episode just makes me so anxious for some reason. Or maybe it’s the show plus my mood in general.
Oh yeah, there’s Dom.
I love Darlene’s outfit.
I remember how shocking it was to see her kill Susan the first time I watched this but honestly, upon rewatching, I don’t feel bad at all. She deserved it. Maybe it’s because so many good characters died later that I’m just not up for crying a river over her.
Cisco and Darlene are true love.
[dramatic funky music]
“Not like it matters, they all ended up back here anyway.” Well isn’t that a Theme.
“She payed for her own funeral.”
Creepy hellfire scene.
I remembered Dom was on the Mobley track but I forgot she actually did bring him in and hold him for half a day. Dom’s so smart. She’s misunderstanding a central part of the structure of the conspiracy by overstating Tyrell’s part in it, but she’s still doing such a good job of tracking all the components.
Also I want to see her Romy and Michelle Angelfire fan page.
“We want Tyrell Wellick, not Tyrell Wellick’s DJ.”
Santiago, back on his mole bullshit. He’s definitely telling her to let Mobley go because he DOES know how important Mobley is.
Completely forgot Angela’s date was also a mole!
“I think she’s just into old dudes.”
Dun dun dun Cisco-cliffhanger.
Wow, so no Elliot in this ep at all, huh? Honestly, I’m not too bothered. I do maintain his story is the weakest this season. Plus he had such a big ep last time, now he needs a bit of a break.
So at this point, at a minimum, Dom has tracked down Elliot (through Gideon), Darlene (through her lover from whom she stole the gun), Romero, and Mobley (through Romero). She knows they’re all part of it, though not how central they are. And she suspects Angela... probably based on Angela just being super suspicious, plus her back story and her connection to the Aldersons.

August 4: Mr. Robot 2x07
An unprecedented second post today because my stubborn self wants to continue with Writers’ Month but I ALSO want to continue with my Mr. Robot rewatch. Today, ep 2x07.
Is this the ep where they reveal it’s prison? (Yes.)
Lol this intro doesn’t age well, all this talk of handshakes. Not anymore!!!
I legit don’t remember why he’s hiding Tyrell from himself. Like I just completely blanked out on everything related to Tyrell.
OH YEAH ANGELA AND DOM. That’s such a good scene. I would actually say the highlight of the ep. All the female characters are so good.....
(Except Joanna.)
I feel like Dom is an ex-smoker, with the whole lollipop thing.
“You guys just got hacked. Dom out.”
The details about the trash... honestly the world building in this is so smart. It captures all the weird little unexpected ripples from crisis.
“You always thought you were so much smarter than me.” Another excellent scene with female characters that makes the rest of the ep seem dull.
So anyway Grace Gummer and I were at Vassar together for a year. Her senior year was my freshman year. If only I’d gone to more parties at the THs we could have been friends lol.
Craig Robinson is really good in this. Ray wasn’t my fave story line but I do like him in it. I feel like there’s something deep going on in this last Ray scene but I’m just like... casually watching it.
“The missing anatomy of the bull.”
It has to do with... anatomy.
Oh Angela. She always makes me so sad.
“That’s the thing about money. It makes you care about it more than about anything else.”
I can’t believe they really arrested Ray from prison.
“One half, the other half, and the other half” lol. Let’s just say I’ll be watching you.
Oh Angela (again). Portia Doubleday is so good though. You can tell that her tone is fake, just a really forced part. She’s playing a part playing a part.
I wonder which famous people irl have fake public birthdays.
“You led us to hack Evil Corp.... I just followed your lead. People want to follow you.... You need to lead.” Hits different knowing who he is.
Leon was so good in that attack scene!!
Uh oh Elliot thinks he’s at his mom’s lol; that’s not good.
I know that everyone knew that he was in prison by this point but it’s still a good reveal.
Overall... it wasn’t bad but this wasn’t my favorite ep. It was weaker than the last couple--more time spent on people I didn’t really care about and less time on my faves. Plus I feel like it was a transition episode. Finishing up the Ray story, getting Elliot out of prison, a lot of time with Angela but she was mostly treading water, nothing really moving with fsociety, Dom, or even Joanna, though they all got short scenes to remind you they exist... I felt like I was pretty easily distracted.

July 20: Mr Robot 2x06
Very discombobulated from this whole blown fuse situation--I think it’s pricking at my anxiety. Gotta move to my bedroom soon, where the lights work.
A few thoughts on 2x06.
This was the ep where I knew this show was REALLY weird. Even more so than the very trippy ep in S1 where Elliot hallucinates half the episode. At least that one felt kinda real, at first--this is just immediately in the deep end of ‘we’re going to do whatever the fuck we want and you’re going to like it.”
The obvious green screen. The man in the trunk. The laugh track. THOSE CREDITS.
“Elliot needs our help sometimes.”
Angela working for EMart instead of ECorp. Elliot has some stuff to process there.
So Darlene is trying to help him, but he keeps knocking her out so she can’t say too much?
“I hear jumpsuits are in nowadays.”
The big cheers when Gideon appears are very realistic. I feel like portraying him as a cop is another clue that Gideon turned hm in.
“I’m buried here.”
Wondering a little what happened to the real Elliot, where he is. The Hacker must be truly completely in control to be the one who needs protecting from the physical pain.
Ray is such an absolute psycho.
Now the Angela story! I have to say, the dream sequence is still weird no matter what, but it just is never going to hit the same on subsequent viewings. But the Angela story made me feel exactly the same, just as tense as ever.
Why does the ECorp attorney have random federal reporters on her bookshelf. NO ONE DOES THAT IRL.
LIBRARY TIME
Santiago didn’t get lucky during the shooting! He’s on the inside!
Lol Angela and her mantras--she’s just doing her best.
So did Cisco target Angela in particular (without Darlene et.al. knowing) or was it a coincidence that she was Ollie’s girlfriend?
Daaaaamn Darlene. This whole hack sequence man... just as good as ever. A perfect mix of badassery and just straight gut twisting tension. Darlene is just too damn cool and Angela... is trying her best.
Lol this guy. “End this before I hurl.”
“I will exploit this weirdness.”
Angela WILL succeed.
Ugh my stomach’s all tense for Angela, Elliot’s the last thing I care about rn. Aside from the intro sequence, this is a prime example of Elliot bringing the ep down.
“ANGELA MOSS.”
Ending the ep with young Elliot and his dad was a bold choice but I honestly wasn’t even paying attn lol. I forgot what happened with Angela and Dom and I want to see more of them!

July 13: Mr. Robot 2x05
Okay this is one of the best episodes of the season with one of my favorite scenes in the whole show.
I remember thinking that samsepiol was such a big reveal in the finale but it was right there the whole time. And doloreshaze.
Hacking the local library lol. Actually for real this is a little unnerving to think about because if you hacked Alma you’d have.... everything. Everything.
This is the fun Elliot I like. Maybe it’s because I know negative amounts of things about computers but I love like “I’m just going to throw jargon at you really fast while I type quickly on a black screen!” like am I basic bitch? Probably but I enjoy it.
The reveal that this room is actually well lit and there’s some guy just standing next to him the whole time completely unaware he’s hacking the FBI is truly my type of humor.
Ooh is this the ep where they pull in Angela?
(Ultimately, yes, sort of but the hack I’m thinking of is in the next ep.)
Darlene’s outfit!!!
This is a really good ep.
I say and then Joanna shows up and I immediately go to sleep.
“Hello Sir, you can’t be here!” This is how I’m going to start greeting people at the library.
It’s hard to track people in New York.
Oh yeah, Elliot being a boss and giving orders. This is the Hacker coming into his own. Love it.
Seeing Dom at the airport makes me legit miss airports. Fuck I miss traveling so much. I will never take it for granted again.
This meeting between Zhang and Santiago is so much more meaningful knowing that Santiago has quite possibly already been turned. I love Zhang so much.
Oh brushy brushy. Poor dog.
I truly cannot find a single rat’s ass to give about Joanna.
Same-sex marriage is legal! That’s such a good detail to help ground you in what year it is.
Oh Ollie. Just... everything about Ollie. He’s not the brightest bulb in the bushel, is he? “Did you talk to the FBI?” “No. Yes.” “What did you say?” “Nothing. Except actually a lot of stuff.”
Ah my favorite scene!!!! Dom and Zhang at the party. Dom is so not having this dressing up fancy thing.
There’s so much to unpack in that exchange about the food lol.
“Little girls’ room.” Terrible phrase but it’s cute when she says it.
When she says “Just Dom” is the exact moment Zhang knew she was a lesbian.
I think he does really like her but also she’s his mark now.
That bed! I want it!
And those clothes! The clothes scene in particular is what I love about this sequence (though Confirmed Lesbian DiPierro is a close second bc I called it then and so many people didn’t, I feel??? No straight person refers to their ex as “they” after dancing around any need for pronouns for multiple sentences lol it’s just not done). She definitely knows they’re his. Even if she didn’t know the sister story was false from the get, she knew.
Tbh I feel like he showed her the clothes in part as, like, an acknowledgment of what she told him.
“The contemplation moves me deeply.” !!!!!!
Why does everyone feel so comfortable talking about illegal activities in the prison visiting room?
“And my dead father’s standing behind you right now.” Honestly, I laughed. A Classic sort of moment but it never gets old.
LOVE Darlene’s “I’m the leader” jacket. And her jewelry.
I never really liked the Ray story line because it was a little too dark for me and I’m not into like the mob violence thing but in a way it helps a little that it’s based on the Silk Road, which did not traffic in people.
Also this makes the Wayfair thing WAY FUNNIER. While not itself being funny at all.
This also makes me think about that article that was about how dark web hitmen are basically all fake anyway, like they’re really just scams?? You can’t hire an assassin online lol.
Here’s Mr. Robot trying to reign in his creation but the Hacker’s main purpose is to protect people. That’s his whole reason for existing. He can’t help it.
I feel like you can tell in the Angela not letting anyone tail her scene that this was really shot in New York.
Oml that shooting scene. I remember seeing that for the first time, how utterly fucking shocking it was. You can’t recreate the shock, but I do love all the new things I notice. Like how Santiago almost certainly either lied about the prints or fucked them up himself. Also just like everything about Dom all the time.
I legit forgot there was an additional scene afterwards because who cares about Elliot getting beaten up by some thugs when THAT just happened.
Next ep has the extended fantasy sequence...not sure how I feel about that lol. And the FBI hack, which I’m looking forward to.

July 7: Mr. Robot 2x04
After a break because of book club, back with more Mr. Robot.
Don’t usually say this because the eps aired so long ago but spoilers, obviously.
Darlene & Elliot was the most important relationship in this show. I love them so much. This was a really good ep for them.
That movie definitely wasn’t the root of their psychological dysfunction.
“In this day and age, it’s sicker not to have panic attacks.” I mean.........not false.
I though Elliot’s therapy appointments were court mandated. Forgot this story though. I wonder who destroyed the room? I assumed the Hacker didn’t exist yet at that point, but he does seem to hold a fair bit of the rage. Might have been Mr. Robot. I could say this scene is where he came into being... but Elliot already had the jacket. Perhaps Mr. Robot was already buying clothes for himself.
I think this is the real Elliot. He seems a little different, a little more chill (”man”), plus I don’t personally think the Hacker exists yet. Also the Hacker forgets this later.
It’s interesting that the mask in the movie was the father’s mask, and then Elliot cosplays his father as he becomes Mr. Robot.
“I can’t tell if you’re joking behind that mask.”
RIP US Economy selfie.
I too have been out in public and seen a man in a gas mask. These times we live in !!!
Another mask!
I like how when Darlene says “you guys” she is almost certainly referring to fsociety but also Elliot is multiple people.
DOM. I love her. She’s so smart.
It looks like Romero was close to knowing what the FBI knew--that they were talking to Gideon. How things would have been different if he hadn’t been killed...
“My beliefs create my own reality.”
Angela is so intriguing. I both understand her so well and don’t understand her at all. And Portia Doubleday is so great at that ‘confident exterior obviously hides great insecurity’ thing.
It’s pretty hilarious that Mr. Robot and the Hacker are talking about Elliot’s body as if he weren’t in it.
The absence of knowing... a deep, black void. But that isn’t what the personalities experience when they’re integrated. Perhaps that’s why it’s called integration, and not destruction.
This Elliot and Krista scene plays better and is more interesting knowing he’s an alter.
It’s very hard for the Hacker not to be in control. I mean I know that would be true for literally anyone, it’s a scary concept, but he was created to have control.
Love whiterose. It’s interesting that the annihilation speech continues over her, where one could say not that she is destroying herself, but that she is creating herself.
Fussy cat.
5/9 mega sale.
This Darlene and Cisco scene is another favorite. Like of the whole show. “Be a man and let me be upset.” “Let me help you.” He just cares about her and loves her so much! All of the intricacies of the FBI, Dark Army, and fsociety stuff just really get me. I both want to figure it out myself and want someone to explain it to me.
“Existence could be beautiful or it could be ugly, but that’s on you.” Angela needs to add that to her tapes. She and Leon would get along.
Elliot’s ideal future makes me cry. All of his family and friends together. He even brings Qwerty. I know it includes a building blowing up but... it’s still just about loving and being loved. The scene just like encapsulates the Dream I think.
Her big brother taught her how to code...... I was zoning out during that chess scene but I love Darlene and Elliot!!!
Darlene knows this is another alter, right?
Ha, NIN!
Samsepiol.
“I’m going to hack the FBI.” Obviously.
Overall, a solid episode. The Elliot parts were the weakest but the strong parts were extremely strong. All the Darlene scenes. Darlene/Cisco and Darlene & Elliot. Angela. The little bit of Dom and whiterose.
Next ep has one of my FAVORITE FAVORITE scenes of the whole show: Dom and whiterose in China.

June 23: Mr. Robot 2x03
Today wasn’t a great day and I am tired, and this ep was very long and I’m feeling it. A few notes:
I can’t believe how obvious they were that Gideon had in fact ratted Elliot out. It’s mentioned in the recap and in the dialogue. But so much time passes between here and the end, I just.... completely forgot he did have a chance to tell Dom everything. I just love that none of the twists are twists.
Flashback time!! I love a good cursed-place backstory. Also Romero is super underrated.
“You’ll love him... Actually you’ll hate him.”
I do think that was the real Tyrell but I also don’t think it was a good idea to talk to America’s Most Wanted on a prison line.
Imo Romero’s death was one of the best twists. It changes so much and motivates so many characters but it was completely random--unrelated to the hack but there to be a threatening, paranoia-inducing event for the characters and the audience. And in fact, again, it’s a twist that should be obvious. Darlene spells it out: Romero was a liability because he was a dealer, and he clearly wasn’t killed by the Dark Army, because if the Dark Army wanted them dead, they’d be dead.
I don’t like the Elliot story here much and never did, but I do think the Mr. Robot as adversary stuff becomes slightly more interesting when you realize it’s two alters and not the original personality versus one other personality. Which is the more powerful?
Price should just tell Angela he’s her father; it would make all these awkward attempts at bonding make more sense to her.
So who’s the bullet in the right place? There have been two people shot, both peripherally...
Oh Dom.
Mobley casting aspersions on Elliot.
I do love this trippy Adderall sequence. The stairs that light up. The multiple Elliots. The skipping. “I know I know, Leon’s talking backwards. That’s not good.”
“You are likeable.” Relaxed funky music.
Weird how it’s only 8:48 in that Dom scene. Also oh Dom. Again.
Price just loves his psychological manipulation mindgames. So villainous.
Insider trading! Heavens.
“I can barely make you out from my cat.”
Dom is such a great combination of awkward/cute and smart. My ideal lady.
DJ Mobley
I love that ending. “F society.” Another twist hidden in plain sight.
Overall... not really my favorite ep though. I really only liked the Dom stuff today. The Angela stuff was okay but not as good as the last ep. Too little Darlene. But my least favorite parts of S2 are Elliot’s prison story line, and Ray’s story line, which is just too much for me, so, I guess it’s inevitable some eps are going to be blah for me. I think the next is similar.
Also, back on the Gideon thing,I think another thing that hides the Gideon stuff is that we know Elliot's importance to the scheme, but it's not obvious from the outside. Like, to the viewer, it would seem that knowing Elliot is knowing everything. but it's not. Dom has his name but he's just another hacker--and he's already in prison! He's not the big fish in her mind. So she keeps going.
Now I’m really done.
