“We had an established identity that we wanted to keep, but ... how do you do that and make the car look fresh and new?” said Gale Halderman in 1989. He was talking about the then-new Lincoln Town Car, freshly restyled for 1990. Halderman led the styling on the FN36 Town Car, but the whole team had similar sentiments. It was a project of contradictions. The previous Town Car, introduced in the dark days of 1980 when Ford lost $1.5B and big cars were hard to sell, had hardly changed since. Ford President Don Peterson was not a fan of the car, considering it old and clumsy. Like GM, Ford thought of shrinking it and going fwd by the late 1980s. With resources dedicated to more urgent projects like the Taurus, the Town Car was allowed to continue with no plan for replacement. By 1985, with Cadillac’s downsized front-drivers out and the market for big cars resurgent on slumping oil prices, it was clear that there was a big appetite for TCs. Planners John Jay and Nick Zeniuk, responsible for the TC, had to repeatedly badger their bosses about the car’s rising success but they got the message after seeing the new DeVilles. GM had handed Ford an opportunity and new federal regs - for airbags and passive restraints - meant an update was needed. Halderman and his designers watched design trends closely. While the designers wanted a modern Acura or Audi-like car, customer clinics - often conducted with loyal customers in Florida - wanted no change at all. Sleeker looks meant better aerodynamics - less wind noise and better economy, but it was a tightrope to walk. The design was locked down in late 1986. For cost reasons, all of Ford’s big cars, starting with the TC, would remain on the “Panther” platform in the 1990s, but the shell and many parts were redesigned. With Ford’s teams busy adding airbags to every other car, the prototype work for the shell was farmed out to IAD in the U.K. The production process, which also involved collaboration with Ogihara of Japan and focused mainly in ensuring quality control, took two years, but the car was ready in the fall of 1989.
