Illustrious Corpses will be released on Blu-ray on September 28 via Kino Lorber Studio Classics. The 1976 murder-mystery is also known in its native Italian as Cadaveri Eccellenti.

Francesco Rosi (Salvatore Giuliano) directs from a script he co-wrote with Tonino Guerra (Blow-Up) and Lino Iannuzzi (Lucky Luciano), based on Leonardo Sciascia’s 1971 novel Equal Danger.

Lino Ventura stars with Tino Carraro, Marcel Bozzuffi, Paolo Bonacelli, Alain Cuny, Luigi Pistilli, Renato Salvatori, Tina Aumont, Fernando Rey, Max von Sydow, and Charles Vanel.

Illustrious Corpses has been newly restored in 4K from the original camera negative. It’s presented with its original Italian audio and English subtitles. Special features are listed below.

Traluceva aristocrazia il viso, una lama a spaccare l’aria, come fosse acqua. Classe 1929, avrebbe compiuto 91 anni tra un mese, è morto a Parigi, Max von Sydow, tra i grandi attori del secolo. In effetti, l’aristocrazia gli scorreva nel sangue: il padre, Carl Wilhelm, era etnologo e professore, la madre era baronessa; nato a Lund, von Sydow vantava avi giunti dalla Pomerania. Fu attore straordinario: Gesù per La più grande storia mai raccontata di George Stevens e padre Lankester ne L’esorcista di William Friedkin, per dire di pellicole d’opposto istinto. Ovviamente, è immortale il sodalizio con Ingmar Bergman, “è stato il primo e il migliore degli Stradivari che abbia avuto il pregio di avere tra le mani”, diceva il regista del proprio attore-feticcio. “Ha avuto un ruolo fondamentale, originario nella mia carriera. Bergman impiega molto tempo per mungere emozioni dai propri attori. Crea un accumulo, che infine esplode – la tensione, infine, ti ammazza”, ha detto lui. Nel 1957 fu il cavaliere Antonius Block che gioca a scacchi con la Morte nel Settimo sigillo; con Bergman realizzò grandi opere, da Come in uno specchio a Luci d’inverno, da L’ora del lupo a La vergogna. “Se mai esista un attore in grado di abitare il mondo creato da Bergman, esso non poteva avere che le fattezze di Max von Sydow. Corpo spigoloso, slanciato, viso scavato, occhi azzurri e cupi, incarnava la potenza e nello stesso tempo il senso di angoscia nordico, dando carne a visioni estremamente cupe ma perfino comiche”, scrive Robert Berkvist nell’ampio ‘coccodrillo’ dedicato a von Sydow dal “New York Times”. Interprete finissimo, attento ai profondi moti della letteratura, nel 1996 interpretò Knut Hamsun nel film di Jan Troell; vent’anni prima fu il protagonista de Il lupo della stella, il film di Fred Haines tratto dal romanzo di Hermann Hesse. Attore in grado di interpretare l’ineffabile, è stato diretto da Francesco Rosi (in Cadaveri eccellenti, tratto da Il contesto di Sciascia, nel 1976), ha interpretato il Capitano Ortiz nel Deserto dei tartari di Zurlini, ha lavorato con Woody Allen (in Hannah e le sue sorelle), Wim Wenders (Fino alla fine del mondo), Sydney Pollack (I tre giorni del Condor). Eppure, l’accademia americana lo ha snobbato, relegandolo a una candidatura come Miglior attore protagonista nel 1989 e un’altra come Miglior attore non protagonista nel 2012, per Pelle alla conquista del mondo e Molto forte, incredibilmente vicino. Capì tutto, subito: “Vorrei avere una scelta più ampia di ruoli nelle produzioni americane, come mi accade in Europa… ma si sa come funziona con il cinema americano, ti offrono soltanto copie esatte di ruoli che hai precedentemente interpretato con un certo successo”, disse nel 1983. Lo abbiamo visto in Dune di David Lynch (1984), in Risvegli di Penny Marshall (1990), in Minority Report di Steven Spielberg (2002); recentemente ha recitato un cammeo nello Star Wars di J.J. Abrams, Il risveglio della Forza (2015). Aveva una casa su un’isola nel Baltico, ha vissuto a Roma, alternava la celebrità alla solitudine. Devoto all’arte, si sentì un espatriato. “Non ho un posto che possa davvero chiamare casa. Ho perso le mie radici svedesi. Ho lavorato in così tanti posti che mi sento bene in molti posti. In Svezia, che strano, mi sento sempre meno a casa”. Parlava sempre con una tinta di nobiltà che ispirava rispetto, e un nodo cristallino di stupore.
