‼️‼️ FILM BRO CONTEMPLATION AHEAD ‼️‼️

Struggling to define how I feel about the house that jack built because on one hand I completely agree with criticisms of it being masturbatory and narcissistic- von trier being aware of that doesn't make it any less true, and in fact his recognition of the film's ridiculous self-absorbtion is sometimes even more repulsive than if he was completely unaware of his own pretentiousness. However I think my biggest problem with it is that some parts just did not have any impact. The fourth incident just got a polite "oh?" from me which is like... the last thing a director like lvt wants from an audience. also have my own issues with the actual direction and editing but im gonna go ahead and say that is my own personal problem.

HOWEVER. Despite all of that I think the film does work. There were sequences (incident #3 especially) that seriously affected me, and it maintains a very bleak sense of humor throughout the whole movie that was essential for keeping me engaged (still think it was too long- definitely could be trimmed down in parts) but for the most part it was effectively funny and desolate in what I believe (hope?) was an intentional way. It's all a big joke, and one that von trier is in on, but he doesn't particularly care if the audience is.

Speaking of that, the most important aspect for me in deciding how this movie works as a piece of art is how the von trier feels about it- this is the kind of movie that feels entirely created for the person making it. it's not something made for audience or critic approval of any kind. Lvt could have easily never released it, just kept it as his own personal chronicle and reflection of his body of work and his life, and I think it would hold the same impact for him. It's truly not about us! I think if he had at any point considered the reception it would garner while making the movie it would have come off as far more disingenuous, and ruined any enjoyment or appreciation of it- but because it doesn't factor in our opinions of it, it captures something genuine about von trier's life and work in a very authentic way, in spite of it's obviously self-absorbed nature. The violence and artistry and egomania all come together in a quite effective, if not always complete, way. it's an ugly movie by and about an ugly man who has lived an ugly life and it knows it and it's not looking to make any compromises about it.

Finally: I think all semi-autobiographical movies should end with the main character getting sucked into the deepest level of hell. Anyways film bro 2023 is off to a strong start 👍
