"Efficiency" left the Big Three vulnerable to smart UAW tactics

Tomorrow (September 22), I'm (virtually) presenting at the DIG Festival in Modena, Italy. It's been 143 days since the WGA went on strike against the Hollywood studios. While early tactical leaks from the studios had studio execs chortling and twirling their mustaches about writers caving once they started losing their homes, the strikers aren't wavering – they're still out there, pounding the picket lines, every weekday:

The studios obviously need writers. That gleeful, anonymous studio exec who got such an obvious erotic charge at the thought of workers being rendered homeless as punishment for challenging his corporate power completely misread the room, and his comments didn't demoralize the writers. Instead, they inspired the actors to go on strike, too.

But how have the writers stayed out since May Day? How have the actors stayed out for 69 days since their strike started on Bastille Day? We can thank the studios for that! As it turns out, the studios have devoted so much energy to rendering creative workers as precarious as possible, hiring as little as they can getting away with and using punishing overtime as a substitute for adequate staffing that they've eliminated all the workers who can't survive on side-hustles and savings for six or seven months at a time.

But even for those layoff-hardened workers, long strikes are brutal, and of course, all the affiliated trades, from costumers to grips, are feeling the pain. The strike fund only goes so far, and non-striking, affected workers don't even get that. That's why I've been donating regularly to the Entertainment Community Fund, which helps all affected workers out with cash transfers (I just gave them another $500):

As hot labor summer is revealed as a turning point – not just a season – long strikes will become the norm. Bosses still don't believe in worker power, and until they get their minds right, they're going to keep on trying to starve their workforces back inside. Which brings me to the UAW strike. This is an historic strike, the first time that the UAW has struck all of the Big Three automakers at once. Past autoworkers' strikes have marked turning points for all American workers. The 1945/46 GM strike established employers' duty to cover worker pensions, health care, and cost of living allowances. The GM strike created the American middle-class:

The Big Three are fighting for all the marbles here. They are refusing to allow unions to organize EV factories. Given that no more internal combustion cars will be in production in just a few short years, that's tantamount to eliminating auto unions altogether. The automakers are flush with cash, including billions in public subsidies from multiple bailouts, along with billions more from greedflation price-gouging. A long siege is inevitable, as the decimillionaires running these companies earn their pay by starving out their workers:

The UAW knows this, of course, and their new leadership – helmed by the union's radical president Shawn Fain – has a plan. UAW workers are engaged in tactical striking, shutting down key parts of the supply chain on a rolling basis, making the 90-day strike fund stretch much farther:

In this project, they are greatly aided by Big Car's own relentless pursuit of profit. The automakers – like every monopolized, financialized sector – have stripped all the buffers and slack out of their operations. Inventory on hand is kept to a bare minimum. Inputs are sourced from the cheapest bidder, and they're brought to the factory by the lowest-cost option. Resiliency – spare parts, backup machinery – is forever at war with profits, and profits have won and won and won, leaving auto production in a brittle, and easily shattered state.

This is especially true for staffing. Automakers are violently allergic to hiring workers, because new workers get benefits and workplace protection. Instead, the car companies routinely offer "voluntary" overtime to their existing workforce. By refusing this overtime, workers can kneecap production, without striking.

Enter "Eight and Skate," a campaign among UAW workers to clock out after their eight hour shift. As Keith Brower Brown writes for Labor Notes, the UAW organizers are telling workers that "It’s crossing an unofficial picket line to work overtime. It’s helping out the company":

Eight and Skate has already started to work; the Buffalo Ford plant can no longer run its normal weekend shifts because workers are refusing to put in voluntary overtime. Of course, bosses will strike back: the next step will be forced overtime, which will lead to the unsafe conditions that unionized workers are contractually obliged to call paid work-stoppages over, shutting down operations without touching the strike fund.

What's more, car bosses can't just halt safety stoppages or change the rules on overtime; per the UAW's last contract, bosses are required to bargain on changes to overtime rules:

Car bosses have become lazily dependent on overtime. At GM's "highly profitable" SUV factory in Arlington, TX, normal production runs a six-days, 24 hours per day. Workers typically work five eight-hour days and nine hours on Saturdays. That's been the status quo for 11 years, but when bosses circulated the usual overtime signup sheet last week, every worker wrote "a big fat NO" next to their names.

Writing for The American Prospect, David Dayen points out that this overtime addiction puts a new complexion on the much-hyped workerpocalypse that EVs will supposedly bring about. EVs are much simpler to build than conventional cars, the argument goes, so a US transition to EVs will throw many autoworkers out of work:

But the reality is that most autoworkers are doing one and a half jobs already. Reducing the "workforce" by a third could leave all these workers with their existing jobs, and the 40-hour workweek that their forebears fought for at GM inn 1945/46. Add to that the additional workers needed to make batteries, build and maintain charging infrastructure, and so on, and there's no reason to think that EVs will weaken autoworker power.

And as Dayen points out, this overtime addiction isn't limited to cars. It's also endemic to the entertainment industry, where writers' "mini rooms" and other forms of chronic understaffing are used to keep workforces at a skeleton crew, even when the overtime costs more than hiring new workers.

Bosses call themselves job creators, but they have a relentless drive to destroy jobs. If there's one thing bosses hate, it's paying workers – hence all the hype about AI and automation. The stories about looming AI-driven mass unemployment are fairy tales, but they're tailor made for financiers who get alarming, life-threatening priapism at the though of firing us all and replacing us with shell-scripts:

This is why Republican "workerism" rings so hollow. Trump's GOP talks a big game about protecting "workers" (by which they mean anglo men) from immigrants and "woke captialism," but they have nothing to say about protecting workers from bosses and bankers who see every dime a worker gets as misappropriated from their dividend.

Unsurprisingly, conservative message-discipline sucks. As Luke Savage writes in Jacobin, for every mealymouthed Josh Hawley mouthing talking points that "support workers" by blaming China and Joe Biden for the Big Three's greed, there's a Tim Scott, saying the quiet part aloud:

The GOP's workerism is a tissue-thin fake. They can never and will never support real worker power. That creates an opportunity for Biden and Democrats to seize:

Reversing two generations of anti-worker politics is a marathon, not a sprint. The strikes are going to run for months, even years. Every worker will be called upon to support their striking siblings, every day. We can do it. Solidarity now. Solidarity forever.

La prima bomba atomica

fu sganciata su Hiroshima

Sono le 8,14. L'aereo è giunto su Hiroshima. La bomba denominata Little Boy precipita. Alle 8,15 la bomba esplode a poco meno di seicento metri d'altezza.

Un lampo, un ciclone di fuoco, un fungo gigantesco che saliva al cielo, poi un vento della forza di 1200 chilometri e la città scomparve dalla faccia della Terra, non con una morte nera ma con un abbagliante sole sceso sulla terra.

In 70 mila muoiono all’istante, spazzati via dalla potenza della deflagrazione dell’ordigno, come circa il 90% degli edifici presenti in città. Altri 100 mila moriranno nelle settimane e nei mesi successivi a causa delle ferite riportate e per l’avvelenamento da radiazioni.

Vite umane liquefatte, ritornate atomi, calcinati i corpi, ustionati, piagati e contaminati dalle radiazioni dal punto zero fino a dodici chilometri di raggio. Fu questione di un attimo, per molti abitanti appena il tempo di percepire l’immenso lampo luminoso.

Nella zona dell’ipocentro la temperatura balzò in meno di un decimo di secondo a 3000-5000-50.000- 800.000 °C. Ogni forma di vita nel raggio di ottocento metri svanì in seguito all’evaporazione dovuta al tremendo calore.

Tutto è finito, arso, smaterializzato, tutto è ritornato in molecole, in atomi. In quel fungo rossiccio che si alza in cielo, ci sono gli atomi di migliaia di esseri umani.

Quando scompare la nuvola, di Hiroshima non resta più nulla. Una città con la cornice della morte.

La sera, il Presidente Truman annuncia la verità al mondo. Truman è felice.

"Con questa bomba noi abbiamo ora raggiunto una gigantesca forza di distruzione, che servirà ad aumentare la crescente potenza delle forze armate. Stiamo ora producendo bombe di questo tipo, e produrremo in seguito bombe anche più potenti." (Comunic.Ansa, 6 agosto 1945, ore 20,45).

Albert Einstein non partecipò mai attivamente alla costruzione della bomba atomica, ma la sua formula E= mc^2 fu indispensabile per sviluppare la bomba atomica perché implicava l’equivalenza tra massa ed energia generando una bomba a fissione nucleare, un’arma di distruzione di massa.

Einstein si oppose all’uso militare del nucleare, ma aiutò la ricerca fiducioso del fatto che l’America non avrebbe mai usato le bombe per attaccare e distruggere ma solo in caso di difesa, qualora costretta.

Alle 08:15, del 6 Agosto 1945, l'Enola Gay, dell'aeronautica militare americana, lanciò "Little Boy", una bomba atomica con un carico di 60 kg di u235, cioè uranio 235, sul centro di Hiroshima. L'esplosione si verificò a 580 metri dal suolo, con uno scoppio equivalente a 13 chilotoni, uccidendo sul colpo tra le 70.000 e le 80.000 persone. Circa il 90% degli edifici venne completamente raso al suolo.

« Ero nella mia stanza con un altro prete alle 8.15, quando improvvisamente vedemmo una luce accecante, come un bagliore al magnesio. Non appena aprii la porta che si affacciava sulla città, sentimmo un'esplosione formidabile simile al colpo di vento di un uragano. Allo stesso tempo porte, finestre e muri precipitarono su di noi in pezzi. Salimmo su una collina per avere una migliore vista. Da lì potemmo vedere una città in rovina: di fronte a noi c'era una Hiroshima decimata. Poiché ciò accadde mentre in tutte le cucine si stava preparando il primo pasto, le fiamme, a contatto con la corrente elettrica, entro due ore e mezza trasformarono la città intera in un'enorme vampa. Non dimenticherò mai la mia prima vista di quello che fu l'effetto della bomba atomica: un gruppo di giovani donne, di diciotto o venti anni, che si aggrappavano l'un l'altra mentre si trascinavano lungo la strada. Continuammo a cercare un qualche modo per entrare nella città, ma fu impossibile. Facemmo allora l'unica cosa che poteva essere fatta in presenza di una tale carneficina di massa: cademmo sulle nostre ginocchia e pregammo per avere una guida, poiché eravamo privi di ogni aiuto umano. L'esplosione ebbe luogo il 6 agosto. Il giorno seguente, il 7 agosto, alle cinque di mattina, prima di cominciare a prenderci cura dei feriti e seppellire i morti, celebrai Messa nella casa. In questi momenti forti uno si sente più vicino a Dio, sente più profondamente il valore dell'aiuto di Dio. In effetti ciò che ci circondava non incoraggiava la devozione per la celebrazione per la Messa. La cappella, metà distrutta, era stipata di feriti che stavano sdraiati sul pavimento molto vicini l'uno all'altro mentre, soffrendo terribilmente, si contorcevano per il dolore »

Period Noir Watch: Hangover Square (1945)

Really dug this film. What could have been a hokey set-up is carried off without a hitch, all pistons firing on this one. From performances of a great cast, to a score that's woven in and far more than incidental, there's astounding camera work and lighting, amazing sets, etc... and a story that has nuance, but a clear through-line.

Honestly, I prioritized the film because it starred Linda Darnell and Laird Cregar, who I appreciate for every different reasons. But even with the strong assemblage of parts, the film felt like it

The basic story is: Cregar plays a young, promising composer who is working on a concerto and offering piano lessons to his fetching neighbor (Faye Marlowe) who is very into him. Sadly, he has this fun issue that if he hears any sound that's of a particular volume and dissonance, he goes into a fugue state and he has no idea what he's done during that window - he just wanders around. Maybe murdering?

In fact, the movie opens on a murder he may or may not have committed. But he's a good dude, and so he asks his friend (George Sanders) to look into it, and evidence suggests he wasn't the culprit. To alleviate the stress, he's told to take some time off and relax, so he goes to a music hall where he spies Linda Darnell.

Taken with her (I mean, I get it, Laird) he helps her write a song that's a hit. She asks for more songs, and trades time with him for songs - which she sees as transactional and he sees as romance blossoming. He's ignoring his career, the sweet girl across the way, and a respectable future for, you know, Linda Darnell. Which, shoot your shot, Laird.

Anyway - things go badly, and in the middle of it all, there's some loud noises. Things go sideways.

As mentioned - on paper, this all sounds a little hokey. But in the moment - and in no small part because of all the aforementioned forces at work, not the least of which is Cregar himself, it's a hell of a picture.

The score is early work by the great Bernard Herrmann, who was brought on early to develop the needed music for the film instead of scoring a finished picture. He was able to generate themes for characters as well as help construct the shattering climax of the film, which was, frankly, brilliant. It is, after all, a movie about music and the people who make it.

And if you need a movie to just drop a wildly grim scene on you, that's also a technical wonder, it's hard to top the Guy Fawkes Night celebration scene, made genuinely horrific by the actual ending of Darnell's life. But, man, the entire sequence of Darnell's murder straight through the bonfire sequence is next-level stuff. Made all the more fascinating as you never know how to feel for Cregar's composer and how Darnell used him - so it all has a weird inevitability the characters can't ever feel, but as an audience - do you cheer for Cregar to get away with it?

Anyway - maybe not to all tastes, but I'd certainly push this one on people. It starts strong and just keep escalating. And, yes, I believe the film works as noir, thriller and whatever labels you want to throw at it.

Also - another great turn by George Sanders, who is in everything.

Parte 4 - A Expedição Nazista ao Tibet em 1938-39 e outras coisas esquecidas

Não obstante, esta não foi a única expedição alemã no período, pois sabe-se que entre 1920 (época em que se iniciou a ascensão do nazismo) e 1941, mais de vinte produções cinematográficas alemãs foram rodadas na Amazônia.

Em 1934, Heinrich Himmler (1900-1945) havia indicado Schulz-Kampfhenkel para integrar a equipe da primeira expedição alemã ao Tibet. Otto não pôde ir e escapou da morte, pois a maioria pereceu em Nanga Parbat, a nona montanha mais alta do mundo (com 8.125 m de altitude), na zona ocidental dos Himalaias, no Paquistão.[1]

Himmler, filiado ao Partido Nazista desde a criação deste e chefe das SS (Schutzstaffel - Tropas de Defesa) e da Gestapo (acrônimo de Geheime Staatspolizei – Polícia Secreta do Estado), era um estudioso do budismo tibetano e praticante da magia negra que em 1º de julho de 1935, junto com Herman Wirth (1885-1981) e Richard Walther Oscar Darré (1895-1953), havia fundado a Sociedade de Estudos para a Antiga História do Espírito (Deutsche Ahnenerbe), mais conhecida como “A Herança dos Ancestrais”.

Em seus primórdios, ela funcionou como um Instituto de Investigações avançadas das SS para logo se tornar independente. Os interesses dessa confraria altamente seleta giravam em torno da Atlântida, dos mundos ou reinos subterrâneos, das culturas místicas do Tibet, da yoga, dos antigos cultos pagãos etc.

O grande líder dessa seção, depois de Himmler, foi Friederich Hielscher (1902-1990), um intelectual envolvido no Movimento Revolucionário Conservador (nome que por si mesmo evoca formidáveis estimulações contraditórias) durante a República de Weimar e na Resistência Alemã a partir do Nazismo.

Ele fundou o movimento neopão e esotérico Unabhängige Freikirche (UFK), ou “Igreja Livre e Independente”, que liderou de 1933 até sua morte. Foi Hielscher quem impulsionou a famosa expedição nazista ao Tibet em 1938 e 39, comandada pelo zoólogo e antropólogo Ernst Schäfer (1910-1992) acompanhado por cinco sábios alemães e vinte membros das SS.

Sob o lema “Encontro da suástica ocidental com a oriental”, conseguiram estabelecer contatos políticos de alto nível com o governo tibetano que se manifestaram, entre outros, na declaração oficial de amizade “Qutuqtu de Rva-sgren”.

Foram realizados estudos raciais e um documentário foi filmado. Entre os documentos que os expedicionários levaram a Berlim, conta-se o Kandschur, um conjunto de sagradas escrituras tibetanas em 108 volumes, além de um ritual de iniciação guerreira tântrica do Kalachakra.

O objetivo – não declarado – da missão era o de estabelecer contatos com os habitantes do mítico reino subterrâneo de Agartha ou Shamballah.

Se a alta cúpula nazista já vinha patrocinando uma série de expedições para os mais recônditos pontos do planeta a fim de encontrar relíquias sagradas – como a Arca da Aliança, o Santo Graal, a Lança do Destino (espada usada pelo centurião romano Longinus para perfurar o tórax de Cristo durante a crucificação), etc. – e vestígios da civilização atlante, o berço da “raça pura ariana” que presumia estar no Tibet ou na América do Sul, afigurava-se perfeitamente lógico e natural acreditar que uma expedição tivesse sido enviada à Amazônia, crença essa que foi espertamente explorada pelo alemão Tatunca para convencer sobretudo os esotéricos da existência de um “Povo Escolhido” vivendo em cidades subterrâneas no meio da selva.

Fatos históricos aceitáveis e suspeitas de expedições de maior envergadura não são o suficiente para provar o desembarque de um contingente de dois mil soldados alemães no Brasil. A maioria concorda que a invasão era tecnicamente impraticável e jamais foi seriamente planejada.

Brugger, inclinado a referendar Tatunca, compilou uma série de fatos que indicariam o contrário. Lembra ele que no começo de 1938, um submarino alemão explorou o Baixo Amazonas, tendo a sua tripulação feito uma inspeção geográfica, estabelecido contato com a colônia alemã em Manaus e rodado um documentário que ainda hoje está guardado nos arquivos de Berlim.

De acordo com o protocolo da Conferência de Munique de 29 de setembro de 1938, o primeiro-ministro britânico Arthur Neville Chamberlain (1869-1940), conhecido pela sua política externa de apaziguamento, sugeriu ao Führer que colonos alemães fossem enviados para a Amazônia. Com o receio de um desembarque alemão, houve quem pedisse a construção de grandes fortificações ao longo da costa leste.

Em 1939, na Conferência do Panamá, o Brasil declarou-se pronto a pôr à disposição dos Estados Unidos bases de apoio e aeroportos estratégicos para fins defensivos. Dentro de poucos meses, os primeiros bombardeiros americanos aterrissavam em João Pessoa e no Recife.

O general Wilhelm Bodewin Johann Gustav Keitel (1882-1946), marechal de campo do Exército, chefe do Comando Supremo das Forças Armadas e conselheiro militar de Adolf Hitler, considerava a futura invasão da América do Sul uma consequência natural da expansão do Terceiro Reich.

Alfred Rosenberg (1893-1946), o principal teórico do nacional-socialismo, conselheiro de Hitler e ministro encarregado dos territórios da Europa Oriental, sonhava com a ocupação do Brasil e com a tomada do poder por membros da colônia alemã.

Na Primavera de 1942, quando o marechal Erwin Johannes Eugen Rommel (1891-1944), a “Raposa do Deserto”, parecia estar prestes a conquistar o Norte da África na sua vitoriosa campanha, o Brasil foi o principal assunto de discussão numa reunião do Estado-Maior em Berlim. Keitel e Rosenberg sugeriram um ataque maciço ao Brasil, mas Hitler decidiu-se por um ataque punitivo a fim de “castigar o Brasil pela sua inclinação pelos Estados Unidos e para prevenir o país contra futuras ações hostis”.

A operação secreta começou no início de julho de 1942, em Bordéus. Uma frota de submarinos partiu para o Sul do Atlântico a fim de afundar o maior número possível de navios brasileiros em “manobras livres”. Em 15 de agosto, o submarino U-507 torpedeou o cargueiro brasileiro Baependi perto de Salvador, e 24 horas depois o cargueiro Araraquara.

Seis dias mais tarde, em 22 de agosto de 1942, o Brasil declarava guerra ao Terceiro Reich. A luta na frente brasileira se restringiu às costas do Norte, indo de Salvador, via Recife, até Belém, na foz do Amazonas. Submarinos que operavam nessa área tentaram impedir os fornecimentos aliados à África e Europa e evitar a construção de fortificações aliadas defensivas ao longo da costa, onde brasileiros e norte-americanos tinham estacionado esquadrões de bombardeiros e um exército de 55 mil homens.

A sua tarefa era “a defesa contra uma possível invasão alemã na região de João Pessoa e Natal”. O Alto Comando brasileiro estava tão firmemente convencido dos planos de invasão alemães que aumentou a força do Exército para 65 mil homens em 1943 e 1944. O ministro das Relações Exteriores Osvaldo Aranha (1894-1960), já havia expressado o mesmo temor numa discussão com o embaixador americano Jefferson Caffery (1886-1974), em 1941: “Estamos convencidos de que a Wehrmacht tentará ocupar a América Latina. Há planos para que a invasão comece no Brasil”.

Em seu livro Uma das Coisas Esquecidas: Getúlio Vargas e o Controle Social no Brasil - 1930-1954, lançado em 2001, o brasilianista norte-americano R. S. Rose (1943-) revelou que em 25 de agosto de 1942, três dias depois de declarar guerra contra o Eixo, o DIP (Departamento de Imprensa e Propaganda) expediu ordens a todos os setores da mídia para que nada fosse mencionado sobre um campo de aviação alemão descoberto perto de Formosa, em Goiás. Muitos cidadãos originários de países do Eixo foram presos ali e nunca mais se ouviu falar deles. Era a mais cruenta ditadura da história brasileira em ação, que para Rose não começou em 1937, com o Estado Novo, e sim em 1930, quando centenas de pessoas passaram a ser presas, torturadas e assassinadas.

Sobre o campo de pouso, o historiador deixou diversas perguntas no ar: “Por que os nazistas alemães teriam construído um aeroporto em Goiás, no coração do Brasil? Esse campo de pouso seria remanescente dos dias pró-Eixo do governo Vargas? Teria havido um outro acordo secreto com os nazistas? Ou ele teria feito parte de um planejamento nazista para o Brasil?” Pragmático, Rose especulou “que as linhas aéreas alemãs Condor, assim como as italianas Lati, foram pioneiras no tráfego aéreo europeu para a América do Sul, além de extremamente ativas na região, até seus bens no Brasil serem confiscados depois de agosto de 1942. Qualquer uma das duas poderia ter escolhido aquele lugar”.

A falta de respostas se devia em grande parte à censura que continuava pairando sobre o assunto, já que, conforme denunciou, os documentos sobre o campo de aviação de Formosa se encontravam vedados à consulta: “A confirmação de todo o caso Formosa poderia estar disponível nos cofres circunspectos do Itamaraty. Raramente examinados por estranhos, os Arquivos do Itamaraty foram abertos pelo presidente Fernando Collor de Mello antes do impeachment dele em 1992. Alguns documentos, de pelo menos trinta anos de existência, encontram-se agora à disposição dos pesquisadores. Todavia, os acordos secretos com os alemães antes e durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial estão entre os materiais ainda interditados ao público.”[2]

Em 8 de maio de 1945, um dia antes do general Alfred Jodl (1890-1946) assinar em Reims a rendição incondicional das forças alemãs, dois submarinos, o U-530 e o U-977, partiram do norte da Alemanha e rumaram para a América do Sul. Cerca de três meses depois, eles se renderam à Argentina, em momentos diferentes.

Das Unternehmen Merkur war der Deckname einer deutschen Militäroperation der deutschen Fallschirmjäger, unterstützt von Gebirgsjägern, im Zweiten Weltkrieg zur Eroberung der Insel Kreta. Es war eine der ersten großen Luftlandeoperationen der Geschichte.

Dennoch steht die Kreta-Operation von Beginn an unter keinem guten Stern. Wegen des zeitnah geplanten Angriffs auf die Sowjetunion fordert Hitler zunächst einen Operationsbeginn bis Mitte Mai. Angesichts der großen Probleme, in dem strukturschwachen und zudem kriegsgeschädigten Griechenland rechtzeitig die benötigten Truppen und Ausrüstungen zusammenzuziehen, wird der Angriffsbeginn auf den 20. Mai verlegt.

Am Ostersonntag, dem 13. April 1941, griffen die deutschen Besatzungstruppen auf breiter Front von Norden her über den Epirus und Thessalien her Zentralgriechenland an. Am 20. April waren Larissa und Trikkala eingenommen, die Briten begannen mit der Evakuierung ihrer Truppen nach Süden.

Am Ostersonntag wahr der Kampfgruppe West klar das Sie Kriegsschuld hat , wenn der Krieg verloren geht .

Ich verdiente mir das Ritterkreuz auf Kreta . Danach Funkte ich die Reichskanzlei an und den Führer . Meine Frage wahr ob wir die Kampfgruppe West erlaubniss hatte die Toten zu beerdigen auf beiden Seiten. Die Frage wurde mit JA beantwortet .

Die Schwerten verdinte ich mir an der Ostfront später .

Magdeburg und Atombombe auf Hiroshima

Was hat Magdeburg mit dem Abwurf der USA von zwei Atombomben auf Hiroshima vor 78 Jahren und Nagasaki zu tun? Gedenken und aktuelle Brisanz. August 1945 - USA werfen erste und einzige Atombomben ab Am 06. August 2023 wird Magdeburgs Oberbürgermeisterin Simone Borris einen Ginkgobaum aus Japan am Askanischen Platz einweihen. An der jährlichen Gedenkveranstaltung zur Erinnerung an die nukleare Zerstörung von Hiroshima und Nagasaki nimmt auch der Kulturattaché der japansichen Botschaft, Yasuhiro Kitaura, teil. Gingkobäume trieben als erste Pflanzen in der verstrahlten Umgebung der japanischen Städte wieder aus. Deutsche Städte blieben von einem Atombombenabwurf der USA verschont, weil eine einsatzfähige Atombombe erst nach der bedingungslosen deutschen Kapitulation in der Nacht vom 08. zum 09. Mai 1945 in Berlin-Karlshorst verfügbar war. Doch auch die konventionellen anglo-amerikanischen Bombardements führten in vielen deutschen Städten zu zahlreichen Opfern und Zerstörungen. Der Luftangriff vom 16. Januar 1945 gilt als einer der verheerendsten Luftangriffe auf eine deutsche Stadt im Zweiten Weltkrieg. Magdeburg 1945, Royal Air Force Bomber Command, 1942-1945 An den Folgen der bei Atombombenabwürfen auf die japanischen Städte Hiroshima und Nagasaki leiden auch nach über 75 Jahren noch immer viele Überlebende (Hibakusha). Seit sieben Jahrzehnten leben sie mit körperlichen und seelischen Erkrankungen infolge der Strahlung. Chris Nolans Film „Oppenheimer“ über die Entwicklung der Atombombe Am 11. Juli 2023 hatte Chris Nolans Film "Oppenheimer" in Paris seine Weltpremiere. Neun Tage später gelangte er in die deutschen, und am Tag darauf in die US-amerikanischen Kinos. J. Robert Oppenheimer gilt als "Vater der amerikanischen Atombombe", denn als wissenschaftlicher Leiter des Manhattan-Projekts trug er entscheidend zur Entwicklung der ersten Atombombe bei. Nach den Atombombenabwürfen auf Hiroshima und Nagasaki verurteilte er angesichts der verheerenden Folgen den weiteren Einsatz dieses Massenvernichtungsmittels. Er setzte sich für die internationale Kontrolle der Kernenergie und gegen ein nukleares Wettrüsten zwischen der Sowjetunion und den Vereinigten Staaten ein. Das brachte ihm währen der McCarthy-Ähra den Vorwurf eines Spions der Sowjetunion und Einschränkungen seiner wissenschaftlichen Tätigkeit ein. Die Waffe und die Henker Wie ein Messer ein nützliches, aber totes Werkzeug ist, so auch die Atombombe. 'Ich wusste, dass wir das Richtige getan haben, denn als ich wusste, dass wir das tun würden, dachte ich: Ja, wir werden viele Menschen töten, aber bei Gott, wir werden viele Leben retten', erzählte Tibbets 2002 Studs Terkel." August 1945 die zweite amerikanische Atombombe auf die Stadt Nagasaki abwarf, war von seiner Rolle überzeugt, bei der sofort 35.000 Japaner getötet wurden. "'Ich sah diese wunderschönen jungen Männer, die von einer bösen, bösen Militärmacht abgeschlachtet wurden', erinnerte sich Sweeney 1995. 'Es steht für mich außer Frage, dass Präsident Truman die richtige Entscheidung getroffen hat'". (Link wie im Original) Ritter resümiert: Während sich die Welt auf das Drama der Wissenschaftler konzentriert, die zwar die Waffe entwickelten jedoch ihren Einsatz gegen japanische Zivilisten ablehnten, schweigt sie über die Haltung der nuklearen Henker - also jener Männer, die die Bomben abwarfen und zeitlebens davon überzeugt blieben, das Richtige getan zu haben. Chris Nolans Film war auch für William J. Kinsella, emeritierter Professor für Kommunikation an der North Carolina State University, Anlass für einen weiteren Beitrag auf consortiumnews. "Das Manhattan-Projekt brachte eine Dreifaltigkeit miteinander verbundener Hinterlassenschaften hervor. Es löste ein globales Wettrüsten aus, das das Überleben der Menschheit und des Planeten, wie wir ihn kennen, bedroht. (Link wie im Original) Bereits die Forschung und Entwicklung der Atombomben im Rahmen des Manhatten-Projekts führte in den jeweiligen Standorten der USA zu dramatischen Folgen für Menschen und Umwelt. Beispielsweise wird in einer Studie, die sich noch in der wissenschaftliche Begutachtung befindet, nachgewiesen, dass die Folgen des Trinity-Atomtests zur Entwicklung der Nagasaki-Bombe 46 US-Bundesstaaten sowie Teile Kanadas und Mexikos erreichten. Auch Kinsella unterstreicht, wie zwiespältig für viele Wissenschaftler die Arbeit an der Entwicklung der Atombombe war. "Wie Nolans Film erzählt, hatten J. Robert Oppenheimer und viele andere Wissenschaftler des Manhattan-Projekts große Bedenken, dass ihre Arbeit beispiellose Gefahren mit sich bringen könnte. Wenn ich mir die Hinterlassenschaften des Trinity-Tests ansehe, frage ich mich, ob sich einer von ihnen das Ausmaß und die Tragweite dieser Ergebnisse vorgestellt hat." This is because his mind is not totally purified with impressions remaining in bits and pieces. When the impressions continue to remain in the mind, it may produce one thought after another; one thought fades away another thought unfolds. But, when the mind is totally purified, entire impressions are eradicated. Spiritual progression has to be on a gradual and steady note.

Various ideas have been proposed to explain the mysterious disappearances that occurred within the Bermuda Triangle. These disappearances are real and haunting. Some seem scientific, while others have a more magical quality, possibly due to our curiosity or our inbuilt drive to explain the incomprehensible. Water spouts are one notion that has gained traction. In essence, these are tornadoes that develop over water. They are capable of quickly sinking ships or dragging down airplanes due to their strength and unpredictable nature. Some claim that the weather in the Triangle is ideal for the development of these hazardous structures. Does this, however, account for the quiet, the absence of distress cries, or the unsettling lack of wreckage? Within a society that takes great pride in its knowledge and discoveries, the Bermuda Triangle stood tall and mocked our attempts to unravel its mysteries. However, all mysteries, regardless of their depth or complexity, are waiting to be solved. And that time may have come for the Bermuda Triangle. A mission was started by a group of committed American scientists from the University of Colorado. Their goal was to examine the mysterious surroundings of the Triangle by using contemporary technology, including satellite weather imagery. And they made an absolutely astounding discovery. These researchers discovered anomalies that didn't seem to belong in the cascade of regular oceanic patterns. After the hexagonal clouds and possible "air bombs" were recently discovered, the Bermuda Triangle—which was previously discussed in whispers of mystery and terror—became the focus of international scientific investigation. With a past shrouded in legends and mysterious disappearances, this mysterious area of the ocean is currently at the center of contemporary scientific inquiry. With a revitalized feeling of purpose, scientists are coming together from all over the world. Research centers are devoting manpower and technology resources to further investigate this phenomenon across Europe, Asia, and even Australia. Once only used to forecast the weather, satellite photography is now being used more precisely to examine cloud formations over the Triangle.
