079. How easy is it for them to read the emotions of others?

Like I mentioned in my answer to 006, he’s learned to be very observant during his years on the streets. He’s usually very good at reading people, and often employs this ability to pick up on when people are checking him out because those people are more likely to help him if he asks ( i.e. they’re good targets for conning ). He had a feeling June was a capable fighter by reading her expression, which was a correct assumption. There are a number of instances where he reads others’ expressions accurately, so I’ll put some quotes in now.

“ She’s not much taller than Tess and definitely lighter than Kaede. For a second it seems like the crowd’s attention has made her uncomfortable and I’m ready to dismiss her as a real contender until I study her again. No, this girl is nothing like the last one. She’s hesitating not because she’s afraid to fight, or because she fears losing, but because she’s thinking. Calculating. ” – Legend, pg. 103

“ She stares at me, and then seats herself in front of me with her legs folded beneath her. She seems different today. Subdued, maybe, even sad. Uncertain. An expression I’ve never seen before, even when I first met her on the streets. ” – Legend, pg. 229

006. What sense do they most rely on?

Though his senses of hearing and touch are refined as well, he definitely relies on sight the most. His eyesight is incredibly good — so good that the Republic took a sample of his eye tissue during their experimentation on him in hopes that they could develop something from it to improve their soldiers. Years of living on the street have made him very observant. He can memorize a face in a few seconds, and can assess a scene just as fast. Since I’m always partial to including canon evidence in my headcanons, I’ll type up some quotes:

“ The man named Metias watches me as I pass. He’s listening patiently to one of his soldiers, but I see him study my face as if out of habit. I make a mental note of his face too. ” ( fast forward a few chapters ) “ And then, in an instant, I realize why the Girl had looked so familiar. Her eyes. Those dark, gold-flecked eyes. The young captain named Metias. The one I’d escaped from on the night I raided the Los Angeles Central Hospital. He had the exact same eyes. ” – Legend, pg. 26 and pgs. 154-155

“ I take in the hallway scene in the blink of an eye. Soldiers litter the hallway. Ceiling tiles. Right-angle turn at the end of the hall. The walls say 4th floor. The soldier who opened the door has started reacting — his hand goes to his gun as if in slow motion. ” – Legend, pgs. 255-256

“ We go down the alleyway until it crosses a wider street, which Kaede turns onto sharply. I hurry after her. My eyes search every corner. I gauge all the spots where I can shimmy up to a higher floor in case anyone tries to take me by surprise. ” – Prodigy, pg. 307
