Cranmer sent out troops northward against Mary, and he held steady for Jane until her government collapsed. Towns across the country proclaimed Mary queen. The conservative gentry rose for her. As Jane's biographer Eric Ives demonstrated, at Edward [VI]'s death, the government sent warships to defend the Suffolk coast. The sailors mutinied, and they delivered their weapons to Mary at Kenninghall. Once it was known that Mary had artillery, Northumberland turned his fighting men back to Cambridge, because it was plain she had invincible support.
