How does the Twelfth Squad work even

For some reason the weird mentor-mentee? Employee-boss? Twisted found family? relationship between Kurotsuchi Mayuri and his third seat Akon (who is, full disclosure, my fave for his long-suffering tolerance for 12th squad and shinigami shenanigans in general) has been sloshing around my brain recently, so I figured I’d write it out for my own reference. There’s not much shown regarding the relationship in canon, but here are the broad strokes.

1. Mayuri probably pulled Akon out of Maggot’s nest soon after he was tapped by Urahara to start the Shinigami Research Institute

Evidence: a) Akon is in Maggot’s nest when Urahara goes to recruit Mayuri, but for whatever reason Urahara doesn’t mention or seem to acknowledge his existence beyond just another prisoner. Also, Akon appears to be disassembling some kind of device and/or dissecting a small creature.

b) Some time after the establishment of the Shinigami Research Institute, Akon joins as Mayuri’s personal lab assistant, despite Akon being a child (or at least child-sized). They appear to have a cordial relationship, as opposed to Akon’s somewhat antagonistic relationship with Hiyori and dismissal of Urahara.

2. Mayuri appears to leave many of the day to day dealings of the 12th squad to Akon.

Evidence: a) Akon is most often seen directing other members of the SRDI when Mayuri is busy. Sometimes even when he’s not.

b) Other SRDI members have a lot of trust in him as a leader, possibly even more than their actual captain, which isn’t that unexpected considering Mayuri’s track record with underlings includes lots of explosions.

c) Akon is the one to give a report on the first Quincy attack in TYBW arc, despite Mayuri standing right there. (In the manga, he sends out a broadcast instead, which isn’t exactly the same, but shows he’s got enough authority for a PSA).

3. Akon shares Mayuri’s dubious morality regarding experimental subjects, but seems to care about the people close to him.

Evidence: a) Akon is present during Mayuri’s study of the Quincies. (I know this is anime only, but he’s not exactly opposed to it in the manga either)

B) he also was involved with the Nemuri project, which I don’t doubt was quite gruesome at times.

4. Akon does not always agree with Mayuri and sometimes takes things into his own hands, which Mayuri seems to tolerate.

a) Akon has cameras in Mayuri’s quarters, which Mayuri either doesn’t know or doesn’t care about

b) Akon makes the executive decision to call Ichigo and Urahara in Hueco Mundo, despite Mayuri saying that it’s unnecessary

In conclusion:

Although Mayuri is the main brainpower of the 12th squad, Akon is the one who keeps the lights on. Akon respects his captain but isn’t afraid to proceed with his own plan of action. Mayuri likely recognizes the usefulness of having someone take over the boring administrative tasks so he can go do his mad science and shit-talk the other captains while someone holds the squad together and remembers to clean out the biohazard trash often enough so that no weird mutant creatures grow out of it.

Besides the purely pragmatic aspects of their relationship, I also think there is mutual respect of each other’s skill. Akon's worked on a lot of Mayuri's big projects, including the Nemuri project, which was Mayuri's greatest dream and ambition. Even Kuna, who has probably been there almost as long as Akon, did not know about the Nemuri project until he brought it up.

On a more emotional level, I think they have a mutual understanding as well. Both were condemned by society and thrown into Maggot's Nest for their interests or their potential. They both have body modifications (Mayuri's ear situation and face paint, and Akon's horns which he definitely didn't have as a kid) that mark them as outsiders, deviant in some way from the rest of society, but proud of it. For them, the twelfth squad, and the SDRI in particular, is a refuge, a place where their ideas are seen as valuable instead of unnatural, where they can be admired instead of shunned and locked away in Maggot's nest.

In conclusion, though they may be dysfunctional and probably a bit too interested in dissection and human experimentation, Akon and Mayuri have tolerated and even respected each other for at least a hundred years. May they continue to do so (with minimal danger to the rest of society) for a hundred more.

"Captain?" You call for him as you slowly made your way inside the room. It's been a week since he locked himself inside his private lab, totally busy with whatever he's working on. Now it's middle of the night and all the researchers already headed to their own barracks, leaving the place empty except for you and Mayuri. "What is it? Didn't I tell everyone in this squad to not bother me?" The captain respond in such a low voice, hinting that he's drained out. His eyes never once look at you, only focusing on the monitor screen. "Nothing, just checking on my favorite person"

No respond from Mayuri, only the clicking sound of the keyboard being heard. Slowly you approach the captain and standing next to him, giving him a worried look. Your right hand touches his, stopping him from typing on his keyboard.

He groaned, too tired to push you away so he let you to do so. "I know you're tired, captain, how about taking a break?" You whispered.

"I'm not tired and please go away you're distracting me" he replied and and tried to push you away but failed, too tired to move his muscles. You smile softly and pull him from his seat. You're gonna risk it all, he is the man that you love and you should take care of him. Even if he probably will kill you after this, you just don't care anymore.

You know how much he hate it when people see him in such a fragile state so you hurriedly lead him to his own captain's quarters. It's not your first time going there anyway. When Urahara still a captain, he always asked you to help him tidy the the quarters for him so the place is familiar to you. But now the captain's quarters is not belong to Urahara, but Mayuri...

Gin and Isshin open Senkaimon during Deicide, they skim over the cool stick-the-sword-in-the-air bit in the manga but they show it for Gin in the anime

Thank you for this tip! The Deicide chapters are not ones I habitually revisit, and now I have Questions.

Is there a reason people are constantly asking their subordinates to open gates for them? Is it tradition? Just an asshole boss power move? The number one thing I wanted to know when I looked this clip up was whether or not one had to be in shikai to perform this move, but Gin is not. (seems like this might be kinda hard for Byakuya if this was the case altho I'm sure he would come up with some extremely extra method of forming his petals into a very fancy, pink key or something). It's probably best that shikai is not required, because it seems like that would be a problem for the low-level shinigami that seem to get sent on Living World missions.

If you had asked me to explain how this worked before these additional examples, I would have guessed that the zanpakutou performs a form of biometric (soul-o-metric? reishi-metric?) identification. Ideally, the boundary between worlds is warded, probably by Squad 12, and there is a white list as to who is allowed to gate into Soul Society, but even if that's technologically infeasible, there should at very least be a log somewhere. It obviously can't be the first case. Taking away senkaimon privileges is the very first thing I would do when a captain defects. (There was also that whole scene in the Soul Society arc right after Urahara sends the Karakura Kids to Soul Society and he touches the gate and it zaps him? What was that, then?) Even if it's just a log, you would think that Isshin might be a little reluctant to use this method, or possibly that there would be some blowback from "SHIBA ISSHIN - MIA - 20 YEARS" really ought to cause someone to get an email alert somewhere. Maybe Kyouraku slipped Akon a cool 20 to "accidentally" delete the logs, who the hell knows? Hold up-- I just read back a few pages, and while it appears Isshin is ultimately the one who opens the senkaimon, he initially tries to make Ichigo do it. It never explains this, but I do not for a second believe that Ichigo knows how to open a gate, based on the fact that Ichigo never seems to know any of the sundry workaday things you probably learn in shinigami school. However, does Isshin ask him to do it to avoid traceability, or is this just another example of "opening the door is the subordinate/son's job"??

3. I thought that summoning a senkaimon this way would send you directly to Soul Society, and that traveling through the dangai was only necessary for cases involving matter conversion. It's a little vague in Urahara's two-gates-taped-together example, but Rukia makes it pretty clear in this scene from the Advance Team arc, which is how Orihime ends up getting kidnapped.

Both Gin & Aizen and Isshin & Ichigo end up traveling through the dangai, and none of them get butterflies. Is this because they don't have proper permissions to open a gate directly to Soul Society? Are senkaimon an acknowledgement based transfer protocol? Hell Butterflies are an ACK and the dangai is the NAK? I can imagine that on a day Soul Society is more functional, a failed zanpakutou checksum would alert some special team of Squad 2 ninja who would meet you at your destination, where you could either provide a different form of credentials (or presumably be taken into custody)?

You know, this ended up a lot more coherent than I expected it to. Hopefully someone else will send me an example from the Bount arc or something that will make all of this nonsense again.

Here are some things that happen in volume 1 of Ryōgo Narita’s Spirits Are Forever With You, the third Bleach light novel, set two years after Aizen’s defeat:

Keigo Asano loses a bet at a party and has to shave his hair into a mohawk.

Orihime reassures him by telling him that he looks like Robert De Niro in Taxi Driver. (Robert De Niro’s character in Taxi Driver murders four people.)

Keigo is nonetheless reassured and tries to use his resemblance to Travis Bickle to comfort a suddenly appearing Arrancar.

The Arrancar in question is that one nurse who we thought Yammy killed was back in Hueco Mundo. Her name is “Roca” because Szayelaporro thought she was as unimportant as a rock, what a jerk.

Speaking of Szayelaporro, he shows up briefly as a sort of digital ghost and blows up Soul Society R&D, which winds up doing not much for him but does set our main villain free.

Nobody in R&D dies as a result of this.

Mayuri misses the explosion because Central 46 has finally gotten around to putting him on trial for planting bombs in his own soldiers and blowing them up.

That trial is happening now because Central 46 spent over a year arguing about the fate of the Visoreds.

Rin, Akon, and Hiyosu are not concerned at all about their boss planting bombs in his subordinates. They’re also experimenting on Kon for some reason?

The original characters are awful.

Original character no. 1: Kenpachi Kuruyashiki. He’s pals with Kyoraku, calls Unohana “Retsu-neesan” and claims that he got invited to join Squad 0, which he turned down because of the Kenpachi Code or w/e.

Original character no. 2: Soya Azashiro. He kills Kuruyashiki in like the first chapter, lol. His Zanpakuto just straight up gives him omnipotence in the area around him, which is some nonsense.

Despite this overwhelming power his actions after busting out of jail consist of insulting a little girl at a sunglasses shop, winning the resulting fight with his nonsense powers, completely failing to convince Yamamoto to back his insane scheme to lobotomize every human on earth, and then stealing the zanpakuto of a fifth seat.

Original character no. 3: Arrancar no. 102, Picaro, which consists of a bunch of children that basically run around doing nothing.

Actually, they do do one thing, they try and turn Yuichi Shibata (you know, that cute kid who was in Chad’s parakeet?) into a hollow. Completely unforgivable. God bless Ikkaku and Yumichika for stopping that nonsense.

Anyhow, as you can see, this book is kind of a mess. Or maybe it’s just my translation, which is actually just a translation of a summary. My biggest disappointment is the severe lack of Don Kanonji in a book that has his catchphrase as the title-- basically all he does is ride around town in his sweet car that he named after Joan of Arc. Ah well, maybe he’ll do something in volume two.

2. Favorite canon thing about this character?

Velvette: Her attitude and looks. Seriously, girl is serving. Even though it is immature at times, I just love her overall aura and aesthetic. Plus, I love how observant we see her being in the bit of time she gets on screen and the fact that her looks change so frequently, which speaks to her position as a trendsetter and fashion designer.

Carmilla: Like Velvette, I like her attitude, but for different reasons. She's clearly been in position for awhile and that reflects in the way she conducts herself. I also love how she will literally murder for her family. I have a thing for protective characters who are also secretly soft with certain people (in this case, her daughters).

4. If you could put this character in any other media, be it a book, a movie, anything, what would you put them in?

Velvette: Oh, geez. I guess I never thought about it much. Maybe something akin to Project Runway/Rainbow where I could see her being a great judge.

Carmilla: This is super obvious, but considering Striker is mentioned as having a Carmine-crafted rifle, it would be cool to see her in Helluva Boss. I know it will never happen, but the idea intrigues me.

5. What's the first song that comes to mind when you think about them?

Other than their respective songs from the show:

Velvette: Shameless by Camilla Cabello, but that's because I ship her with an OC of mine and it reflects that.

Carmilla: Sexy Bitch by David Guetta ft. Akon, for... reasons. I'm simping respectfully.

6. What's something you have in common with this character?

Velvette: Hmmm... Fashion, I suppose. Not in that we dress the same, but enjoy creating it (even if I just do sketches).

Carmilla: Not much, actually. The only thing I got is that we're protective of and will go to bat for those we care about.

Carmilla: No one, honestly. Like, she has traits in common with other fandom characters, but I can't peg just one character from a fandom I've been in as being similar. Or I'm just blanking right now.

I’d actually forgotten about this, but I started the week with "Kira is intimidating so let's write something else" panic and ended up with 1000 words of unrelated Matsumoto fic. It was one of those writing sessions where I had a floating premise I wanted to explore ("my girlfriend who lives in Rukongai") and then thought about what timeline would be most interesting for it (the immediate aftermath of Isshin’s disappearance), only for the part I actually wrote to end up being mostly about Akon. You know, it happens.

I still have not finished Kira’s chapter, but I am VERY CLOSE. I also noodled a bit in Chapters 14-20, because Kira’s chapter most directly connects to Rose’s (14), though regrettably this does not help me with the first half of the next chapter, which continues to be a large ???

Highs

I understand now why this chapter has to be narrated by "Izuru" and not "Kira" because as the writing has gone on, I keep realizing over and over that *oh* yeah, this is not the Kira this man brings to work, these aren’t even thoughts he would share with his friends; we’re deep in Izuru territory here.

I enjoy writing Kira because you can write some truly batshit things in some truly batshit ways and then be like, yeah, keep that in there actually!! I stand by this (among many other substantially more baroque things): Izuru’s aunts twitter behind him and Izuru imagines his ears wandering down their canals and into the back of his throat. It’s quiet there.

Kira's is an interlude chapter, away from the main action, but I feel like he definitely understands himself as the main character in his own story here. Love that for him, but I'm equally happy about feeling like this chapter has actually more to do with the rest of the fic than I’d previously given it credit for. I think it potentially revisits both the plot and structure of the ending of the previous chapter (Rukia 7) in really interesting ways, and could do well in seting up further exploration in the next chapter (Hisagi's).

Lows

I feel deep deep deep deep shame about a scene I wrote in the very middle of this chapter, and writing every scene that followed required me to return to increasing feelings of shame. I do not yet know whether that means I should take it out because it shouldn’t exist, or if my reasoning about why it should; and why, against most logic, it should be in the *middle* of the rest of this, to boot, is correct, actually. But I did manage to just keep writing, regardless of my level of incredible shame, so there’s that. Not that fun, though.

I feel like I’m learning a lot of things about Kira, and I am trying to just let happen whatever happens, but there’s a lot where I’m just like, okay, but I’m not sure I actually believe that about Kira (and later, Hinamori shows up and then I’m not sure I believe all of these things about her, either). So there’s a lot to sort through, and I’m worried because I don't think the end result is going to be a pile of characterization to sort through; it will be a garden, and there is going to be stuff that needs to be excised but is already seeded into the nerves or I guess like, the root system, of the chapter in ways that will be more complicated than "well, just delete that line, then." 

I also feel like I’m writing the season premiere of a 5th-year CW show, where there’s a lot going on and it’s all a bit unsettled. It’s introducing a new flavor to set apart what’s coming from what came, but it’s also trying to manage four seasons of previous lore and is perhaps high on its own lore supply. Maybe it’s fine because this is, in fact, the beginning of Part 2, and Part 2 is just Weirder. But it’s also Chapter 8, not Chapter 1, and does not functionally have to be the "beginning" of anything; it’s the middle.

He wasn't the biggest musical enthusiast, as the science man that he was. His life's soundtrack was the silence of his lab, the whirring of machines, frantic typing, the slicing of blades through flesh...

But, for some reason, he woke up with a certain song on the back of his mind that day.

And throughout the day, he could swear he felt it in his bones.

Maybe it wasn't the song at all.

Maybe it was just that day... He was still shaken.

"Ugh... Will this headache never stop?!"

Mayuri Kurotsuchi hated anything that interrupted his efficiency. Headaches being one of the worst offenders. And with all the work he had to do, too!

That would be one long day,indeed...

And his mind went right back to the song he was thinking about. By some human composer named Vivaldi. Antonio Vivaldi. And it was called "Four Seasons" but... Mostly "Winter".

Massaging his temples slightly, he was on his way to the 12th Division, and the song was still there. Why was he thinking about it so much?

Because it made his blood stir.

It made it boil. Not in a bad way like...

"Like that... Barbarian, does."

And it's happening again. Again his thoughts drift to Zaraki. This was unnerving, disturbing, something he didn't need at all. He had to fix that.

Somehow, he had to.

Or else, it would keep happening. It could keep happening.

Vivaldi's Winter. And those strings. Those strings cut like swords. Fast. Inclement. Like a terrible and fleeting memory.

Like his memories of the night before.

Down to the lab he went. His thoughts a mess and his heart pounding.

He just wanted his peace and silence back. But his thoughts had a lot of sound to them, his body was still singing tunes...

And he hated it. Every single bit of it.

He opens the door. Nemu greets him. Akon greets him. But he needed silence. Silence and distance from everyone.

He goes and locks himself in his personal lab.

"Ah, strings..."

He closes his eyes and breathes. No one could know. No one should know.

But then it all rushes back to him and he groans, mad at everything but especially at himself.

Why did he enjoy that so much?!

Why Zaraki throwing him around with so much violence, ripping his clothes off, pining him against a wall the past night... Made him feel alive like he didn't feel in ages?

Why was he shaking, thinking about that now?

Why. Why. Why!

He could feel his throat drying up.

Like the rhythm of that song, he could remember every moment vividly. It was just another fight that suddenly took a turn. That wasn't supposed to happen. That shouldn't have happened!

It went against every one of his logical thoughts. It didn't make any sense. That bastard had no right, he had no...

But the kisses and caresses and the hushed sounds...

Like Winter's strings. Fast. Desperate. Harsh.

And Zaraki's voice:

"Aha. Suddenly I am not such a nuisance anymore, huh, Kurotsuchi?"

Mayuri sits down and hits his desk in blind anger:

"Yes! Yes, you are a nuisance and I hate you and I want you gone!"

While he buried his face in his hands, he could still feel it all. Every fleeting moment, every touch, like if it was happening then and there... In his lab.

Crescendo and Decrescendo.

Too long and too fast. He couldn't focus his thoughts. All he could remember was Kenpachi. His voice, his taunts, his scent, his body...

"Don't even... Try to struggle. No one will hear you. Today, you lost."

Zaraki smirks somehwere in his memories:

"And you are all mine."

And then sounds. Sounds and more sounds.

And silence.

And hushed goodbyes. And promises of hatred everlasting. At least from Mayuri's part, because Zaraki...

"Yeah, yeah. See you next week. Bound to lose to me again, anyway. Just make sure you... ahem..."Get mad at me" somehwere more secret. You don't want people hearing you, right?"

The nerve!

His anger was such he could break someone in half, right then. Anyone that dared getting near him would die a gruesome death! Anyone that breaks the sanctity of his silence...

- Master Mayuri?

Urgh. Nemu.

He massages his temples again. Anger boiling.

- Come on in.

Nemu opens the door:

- Excuse me.

Mayuri looks at her. And he blurts it out, probably led by those strings that kept killing him with their blinding speeds:

- Ah, Nemu... How can something be beautiful and terrifying at the same time?

He dramatically raises his hands:

- How can something make one feel regret... But also seek more of it? What kind of punishment is this?

Nemu looks at him in silence. Mayuri smirks to himself:

- Yes, I lost. Indeed, I lost. Nemu?

- Sir?

- Bring me tea. And...

She looks at him. Green eyes a mystery, so cold and so deep.

Like Winter:

- Nothing. Just make sure no one interrupts me today.

- Yes.

Nemu leaves.

Mayuri sighs. And starts humming.

Favorite book trilogy is by far the StarCraft Dark Templar Saga. I wish I could go back in time and read it for the first time over and over again. Reading it always brought a smile to my face. The ending made me cry tho!

Favorite graphic novel series of all time is ElfQuest. I fell in love with it (albeit at an age far younger than I should have been! I can't believe it's classified as a young adult series in bookstores!!!) It's what inspired me to create things for the first time.

Thank you so much. And I see. Hope you enjoy the rest of the anime since it really is enjoyable, even if it hurts at times. And yes. So many people suffered and since I love more than just my fave it wasn’t nice to see. My fave is Captain Hitsugaya. And of course. Who are actually your faves now that we’re talking about it? He’s still not okay but I know he will be when the time comes since he still has an important part later on (which was kinda shown in one of the first trailers which was a nice surprise). Thank you so much. Like always, mixed. I had a video call with my friend yesterday which lasted two hours and the only reason it ended was because she had to go out to walk her dog. We also plan on calling later again this weekend which I’m looking forward to. I told her about an idea I have for a new story based on the Jujutsu Kaisen series and she approves so I might end up writing that at some point (even though I don’t have as much faith as usual in it since the series is very different from what I usually write about). I was also a bit sad because there’s a fave of mine from a different series that dies at some point and I was rewatching some episodes with him and seeing him being his great self just made it hurt. But I am glad that we got what we did of him because it’s beautiful nonetheless.

I also hope that your week calms down and that you can take it easy in one way or another.

You’re always welcome! Thank you so much for always wanting to talk to me, even if I’m not being super active! I really appreciate it! And I do enjoy Bleach and really, I should get back into either reading it or watching it. I mostly stuck to reading but I have been told that the fillers in Bleach, while excessive, were at least enjoyable. And honestly, I should have suspected that. Most of the people I know who love Bleach have Hitsugaya as a favourite and I definitely do think he’s a really cool character and I enjoy him, but he’s never been one of my favourites. I do love all of Squad 11, Hanatarou, Renji, Kira, Shuhei, and I’m a huge slut for both Shinji, Akon, and Kensei, not going to lie. All of the Visoreds were amazing. And, since I’ve been massively spoiled and know how everything goes and how the series ends, I know some of those characters really get hurt.

I’m so glad you got to have a video call with your friend! I know you said you don’t get to talk as much as you would like and I hope you’ll get more chances to chat! And I’ve watched the entirety of the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen and I definitely get what you mean. The only reason it’s not on my list is because I find it rather difficult to write for so I wish you all the best of luck! And thank you for the well wishes. Today was absolutely brutal…I had to have payroll done by last night and there was two employees who just would not get me their hours for the last week properly and who didn’t swipe as they should’ve through their shifts with their cards…anyway, when one of them called this morning to give me their hours, I had to tell them they missed the deadline for payroll that I had been super clear about and because of that, they were going to be missing last weeks pay off their paycheques. There was nothing I could do about it, honestly…anyway, long story short, I was told at some point during the argument that they hoped I both got raped on the way home tonight or hit by a fucking bus and like…work’s taking care of that and being awesome about it since I had to report that above me but it still fucking sucked. I hate piss poor men who hate being told no by a woman and resort to threats or wishes of violence on them. I’m trying so hard to not be blocked creatively, and to get things done here, even though I’m spending until seven at night at work, and while I love one of my friends dearly, they have been using me as a free therapist lately so rather tough week but you know, things will get better and I’m trying to stay as positive as possible! Taking time for self-care and happiness boosting things like rewatching favourite movies (Ghibli’s been a huge one for me lately because fuck, are they gorgeous)! I hope you, and each and every person reading this, is doing amazing, having fantastic weeks, and remembering to take time for self-care as well!

Who is Urahara’s Soul Society Contact?

I’ve been reading some early chapters of Bleach, and it is clear that Urahara has some connections in Soul Society still, as he is selling standard-issue Soul Society supplies in the beginning (to who? Rogue shinigami? Fullbringer? The Visoreds?). The fact that he had a decommissioned mod soul like Kon means that he gets his product from Soul Society instead of making it himself. So, the obvious question is, who is providing him with all this Soul Society contraband?

I put forward the following candidates beneath the cut:

1) Shihouin Yoruichi

This is the most obvious answer, and it’s clear that she does travel back and forth between Soul Society and the Living World occasionally, and her cat form helps with that. However, it seems like she rarely visits Urahara these days (or at least has not visited since Ururu and Jinta started living there, since they don’t recognize her by name or by cat form), so who knows how out of date her information is. Also, I don’t see her making regular supply runs, and in any case if she took too much then they’d probably notice, so she’d be a pretty spotty source of stolen contraband product.

2) Kurotsuchi Mayuri

He is head of the Research Institute, and I can see him wanting to flex on Urahara with his latest inventions. He also has no respect for Soul Society rules, so I wouldn’t put it past him to do a little under-the-table business. Of course, he would never do it out of the kindness of his heart, so what exactly would he be getting in return? Maybe he’s flexing on Urahara, showing off all the shiny new product he’s developed in Urahara’s absence? But it seems like most of the stuff he’s sending is pretty common stuff, like gikongan dispensers aren’t exactly cutting edge, which seems a bit too boring for a flex.

3) Akon

I don’t think he is an exact extension of Mayuri the way Nemu is, so I can see him going behind his captain’s back to have some shady dealings with Urahara, perhaps in exchange for living world cigarettes because he’s the only one smoking them in Soul Society as far as I remember. Also, I definitely can see him as the lab manager type, and if anyone is making sure the biohazard and possibly radioactive waste is getting disposed of properly, it’s him. And if his way of proper disposal involves skimming some off the top and selling it to Urahara, well, he wasn’t in Maggot’s Nest for no reason. He has some points docked because he didn’t recognize the handiwork on Rukia’s gigai during his first appearance though.

And my final sleeper candidate is…

Bonus candidate) Shutara Senjumaru!

This is an unexpected one that I didn’t even consider until later, but here’s the evidence. A) We know that Urahara has seen the Soul King before, from his conversation with Aizen at the end of the Fake Karakura Town arc. This would be hard to do without meeting Squad Zero, who guards the Soul King. B) Shutara seems to be on familiar terms with Mayuri and the Research Institute, and so she must have visited the Gotei 13 either before Urahara was exiled, or sometime after (in which case she would probably know about the latest developments). C) She can clearly come and go in the research institute without much difficulty, even with whatever security measures Mayuri has set up, as seen by the way she manages to take Ichigo’s broken bankai from there easily. In any case, it wouldn’t be strange if she knew Urahara, and we know that Squad Zero is out of Gotei 13 jurisdiction, so she would be able to interact with an exiled shinigami without much issue. As for motives, perhaps she is fond of Urahara? Perhaps she does it to mess with Mayuri? Who knows. It’s a fun thought though.

I wrote it once and i'll write it again, I think in Bleach shinigami's aging is "discretional", meaning that it's based on a mix of personality, style, experiences, personal issues and even choice.

That is why we have characters who are super old but look kinda young (Unohana, and to a certain extent Ukitake and Kyoraku), characters who seem stuck looking like kids (Hitsugaya) and others who seem to be aging in a more..."human" way (Renji, Rukia, Kira, Akon, Hisagi, Nanao...) but who probably won't change for a looong time now that they look "like normal adults" (in a human sense).

Example: Akon looked like a kid (and was perceived as a kid, I guess) when Hiyori was already looking like she is now, but in the meantime he grew up a lot and looks "older" than her. (I think Hiyori looks "young" mostly because of her bratty personality and hairstyle...but I see her as an adult anyway.) Another example is Nanao. We saw her looking like a little child when Lisa was already an adult. Now they basically look the same age. (Hisagi was a kid when Kensei saved him. Their age difference can kinda be seen... but anyway, Kensei was a grown-up and stayed sort of the same, while Hisagi grew up.)

Kenpachi met Unohana when he was a kid and she had already been around a long time. She stayed the same basically, and he grew up. In the present he looks as old as her, or maybe even older. Maybe just because he's so into fighting anything and anyone...

Aizen looked younger when he was Shinji's lieutenant, obviously, but by the time they meet again Shinji looks...kinda... younger than Aizen (but that might be because of Shinji's style).

In general, it seems to me a quite linear thing: shinigami just age super slowly compared to humans (but in childhood their aging is faster or more evenly paced). When they reach some sort of adulthood, they sort of stop visibly aging for a long while.

It seems kind of reasonable to me and probably the most inconsistent one is... Hitsugaya. I think he still looks like a kid because...he feels like a kid. He acts mature and arguably he is more mature than other adults around him, but... i get the idea that for some reason he is subconsciously "preventing himself" from growing up.

Then we could discuss the issue "how old do the various shinigami look in human terms" till kingdom come and I guess some people would have pretty hilarious ideas (example: the people who claim that Hinamori is "supposed to look like a child" or that Shinji is supposed to look like a teenager because "he went to Ichigo's school"... 😒)

So, is their aging kinda wonky? Yes. But it also makes sense, imho.

(I won't get into the obvious issue of Ichigo looking...not like a 17 year old, because that is a long-standing tradition of shonen manga... the guys in Saint Seiya were supposed to be 14/15 or something and they were... hella jacked. So...yeah. Even all the girls in Sailor Moon looked a lot older than their "real age"... so...yeah, again.)

Rukia's drawings are known to consistently resemble bunnies, Byakuya is known to draw the seaweed ambassador, which other characters are known to have distinctive art styles and what do they look like that make them so distinctive?

I strongly encourage you to obtain a copy of Color Bleach, a publication which is tremendous for any number of reasons, including the fact that it contains the worst recruitment brochure you’ve ever seen, featuring art by many of our assorted regulars. You can also see these drawings on the Bleach wiki, under the entries for the individual squads. I don’t usually mind posting some manga panels to make a particular point, but I didn’t want to wholesale repost a big section of a book, and it’s really worth every penny, but I will give my  impressions of the art that appears there.

I would not have pegged Yamamoto as that dude in your fifth grade class who loves to draw big muscle-y guys, and yet what is it I see here?

Omaeda actually has some decent art skills?? My man even has what approaches some style. Probably part of his noble upbringing included art lessons, and I feel like he was into making his own comics at some point. 

Soi Fon’s art is very stylized, but I kinda dig it. Does she draw things that are not black cats? Doubtful, but there’s something to be said for doing one thing and doing it well. 

Unohana appears to be skilled in the classical sumi-e style, which tracks. 

Momo is a very talented artist, and “drawing” is listed as her special skill elsewhere in the databook. The picture she has here is, um, a very shoujo version of Aizen. I like to think that in addition to drawing at a level where she could conceivably draw her own manga if she had the time and inclination, but I think she’s probably talented in a more realistic style, as well, and probably also does some painting, etc. 

Oh Renji, my Renji. He doesn’t have a lot of skill, but he’s got both style and enthusiasm. I think he’s a decently talented doodler who specializes primarily in Zabimarus. Imagine being a Squad Sixer and getting some paper returned to you with a little Zabimaru at the top screaming “GREAT JOB!!!” I would simply die.

Komamura. Komamura, my beloved. Okay, I can’t help it, this thing just has to be seen to be believed:

(the top one is Komamura’s, the bottom is Iba’s). I mean. He’s a dog. What do you expect? 

Iba, on the other hand has some real style going there. It reminds me a little of, like, WWII nosecone art. I’ve made a lot of jokes about Iba’s mom being into painting (namely big, Georgia O’Keefe style flowers) so she probably made him take art classes as a kid. He’s probably super-embarrassed about how good he is, but I bet the hit rate on his Squad 11 Recruitment Brawl posters was a lot better than Yachiru’s. 

Hisagi is also a pretty good artist?? I’ve said before that I think Hisagi picks up a lot of hobbies and never gets terribly serious about any of them, but since drawing is sort of a foundational skill for a lot of other stuff and he’s had, like a hundred years to get good at it, he’s, well, pretty good. I bet he draws a lot of the ads for the Seireitei Bulletin himself, like the J. Peterman catalog.

The Squad 11 offering is allegedly by Yachiru, but it’s weirdly good. It looks like one of those continuous line drawings that are way harder than they look. 

That’s it for people we actually have evidence for. Here are a couple of additional headcanons:

Ikkaku is a real connoisseur of drawing dicks on things.

Yumichika draws beautifully. He uses this mostly to do fashion-design type stuff, but he also likes to do general designs. He especially likes to incorporate feathers and swirling colors.

Nemu is a highly skilled scientific illustrator. Mayuri is pretty good at drawing diagrams-- he’s very good at conveying ideas thru images, but he tends to hand things over to Nemu if he wants something for publishing and archival purposes. Akon is also a pretty decent hand at drawing. He’s one of those guys who can draw straight lines and perfect circles without tools. Akon also occasionally enjoys doing some creative art. Is “Tool album covers” a genre? Anyway, that’s what he does.

Toushiro likes building things out of ice, and he’s quite good at making detailed construction plans. He’s real into using rulers and French curves and crap like that. These plans are legitimately gorgeous, even though they are basically technical work. Every so often (usually for Momo’s sake), he’ll try to draw a person or a cute animal and it’s real bad and Momo and Rangiku both make fun of him for being a terrible drawer, because they know he isn’t. He puts up with it, as is his way.

Kyouraku likes to draw “sensual” art, which is nearly as bad as his terrible romance novel. Juushirou likes it though, it always makes him giggle.

Episode 8: Allegiance (or thelonelyisland ft akon)

Wherein John MasterChief bangs!!!!!! Also one of the most visceral episodes of any tv show I’ve ever watched, the kind of episode where you don’t realize how much you’ve bonded and grown to love a character until something like this happens. But mostly; that dick tho! (content warning: we are talking about sex scenes and in my patented digression we’re going to discuss sexual assualt)

What do you do after you transcend space and time for a beautiful moment of intimacy with your sworn enemy? Well some of us have been known to ship ourselves to the First Order, but JMC and Makee instead go to the park. I hear Reach city is beautiful this time of year. 

I’m so late on this, that joke is going to totally fall flat. To be honest, I really liked this episode, my family all really liked it, but I have had a great deal of trouble getting this baby out. The halo show is good, the acting is fabulous, and the visuals are striking. It’s hard to describe something when it is at its best, especially when, I fear, next episode will let me down. 

I’ve put out writing this because I don’t want this to end. I've had a great deal of fun with the Halo show, and I did want to write this because then I would have to watch the last episode, and then this would be over. So I’m sorry that this is late and that it’s probably not my best. Anyway: they had SEXXX

This shouldn’t be a surprise: I love enemies to lovers, I love characters who have mental links with each other; I am a #reylo and this is only the tip of the iceberg. I have terrible taste, I will never change and I won’t apologize. This dynamic is great and these two are on the softer end of things (tho,,,, I assume they will end in the most typical way, #likeifyoucryeverytime). 

I think a lot of people disliked the sex scene; I don’t understand these people. I know that here in the year 2022 we’re all discoursing about the sex scenes for some fucking reason, as if the world needed this, and the Halo show has wandered into this against it’s will, taking me with it. What I gleaned from the tags and the tv tropes YMMV page (never find yourself on the tv tropes ymmv page girls) is that some disliked this scene because it wasn’t… sexy? Which I think would be valid criticism if that’s what the scene was hoping to do. I think we need to evaluate this on it’s own terms; you watch West Side Story (dir Steven Speilberg, 2021) and it’s not a valid criticism to say “this Speilberg movie lacks Nazis and/or dinosaurs, it is therefore bad.” (we’re pinning WSS by the way, that was foreshadowing). 

This was not an erotic scene, it was an intimate scene. The scene was tender, almost chaste. That worked for me. This was certainly better than the similar scene from Eternals! Sex is just a part of life and I like the thought that it can be explored in media without it needing to be explict, and especially does not need to be titalting to the audience. What this scene was supposed to show was that these two fundamentally alone characters could connect with each other, and importantly that these characters are maturing with each other's help. This was not a particularly subtle exercise; we spend a lot more time with their mutual scars than master cheeks or any of Makee’s body (thank. goodness). I talked in my Pirates of Penzance episode 4 recap that John MasterChief is really just a child on a developmental level, and really, what were you expecting these randy kids to do? Not bone? Y’all not see M. Night Shyamalan movie Old? Where the beach… made them old? Poetic cinema.

I say softer because although they are on different sides, have different moral codes, that doesn’t really impact their initial coupling. Makee and John MasterChief do not have a personal beef with each other; they barely have any history at all. 

Makee: humans… bad 

JMC: I don’t think so, no. View this dog. Kiss me. 

Makee, post getting dicked down: point: humanity. I am now good.

To some, I understand why this is too big of a leap, but for me it worked because 1) that shit is funny 2) It’s not as though Makee had any reason to dislike humanity personally? She was indoctrinated into a cult who put down humans for the last decade of her life? Someone shows her kindness, gives her a good time, shows her dog, and she changes her mind. Why not?

The sex scene is partcularly worth it beause we get the most tension filled morning after ever filmed. While I stand by the fact that they are on the tamer side of Enemies to Lovers, I do appreciate that the inherent tension of bedding your enemy is on full display. We know, because JMC is the MC, that she won’t kill him with her little finger knife, but she doesn’t know that. When she caresses him? Chills baby, all day long. And though we did not get graphic sex, we did get graphic violence when she rips out her knife implant. I think not only was this effective in terms of showing us where Makee’s allegiances are (oh hey that’s the title, the title of the episode!) but shows that this trust comes (ha) at a cost; in this moment she bleeds into the little sink (much as JMC did when he removed the pellet that allowed them to have this intimate moment), but later, being unarmed may be her downfall. The cost of trust, of love, of affection is shedding your defenses, a dangerous proposition in a warzone.

Someone who has decided to fuck those feelings, or so she thought! Is Halsey. We see why, 2 episodes ago, she brought out her best crocodile tears on Miranda. Namely, all that unbroken eye contact with her daughter allows her to yoink her biodata and now she has full access to everything. What a bitch. But it was interesting to see Cathy Bates over here feeling some kind of way about JMC having a GF. She is not pleased and even Aidun, her creepy intern, was like nah girl, too weird for me when she says that JMC never needed companionship because he had her. Girl. Maybe I picked the wrong Bates because this is Norma energy.

Meanwhile, Cortana might be the saddest unwilling voyeur of all time. The poor thing, she’s stuck in JMC’s thoughts as he bones someone else, she’s stuck in Halsey’s freudian machinations, can’t a robot girl catch a break? She does ultimately fight back against Halsey’s plans, thank goodness, and to me this episode signals what I believe will be the start of the #JMCortana era, patent pending. I feel like the worst thing I could say about the reach sexytime hour really is that the cuts to Cortana make it clear that this relationship is the real focal point of this series; this coupling is less about Makee as a character than it is JMC because let’s be real, Makee is not long for this world.

Halsey’s hubris bites her in the ass all over, as not only has she lost JMC, Kai and her baby daddy, but she’s lost her greatest creation Cortana. I loved when Halsey tries her hand at manipulative mother in-law-ing and even Makee, who we all know has divisive opinions the hue-mans still doesn’t go for it. She’s losing her touch! Later, we see that even the rest of John MasterChief’s squad has abandoned her even with their training still in effect. Good for them!

But we return to the ravings of someone who had no understanding of what she was getting herself into: me. When I recapped the first episode, I touched on how there sure is a lot of evil in this place huh? The covenant is bad, halsey is bad, and the UNSC is bad in and of itself. As much as they would love to scapegoat Halsey, they were still the one that approved nearly all of her actions. And we see this illustrated in the confrontation with Makee.

I really loved how, when confronted with the truth that Makee killed all those people in a major #girlboss moment, she doesn’t deny it, she doesn’t even say that she’s changed. “I had to do it” is what she says; and can we argue that that’s incorrect? She was told this is what she had to do, just as all of the spartans were told; how is what Makee did any worse than JMC killing Kwan’s mother in the backstory? 

The thing is, Makee has changed; she comes unarmed looking for help, but she finds only violence. 

This scene, to me, is reminiscent of the classic moment in West Side Story (SEE I told you we would get back to WSS). In act two, after the Mercutio and Tybalt equivalents have died, and Tony (our Romeo) and Maria (our Juliet) have sex (after he kills her brother, as one does). They are caught by Anita (who, here’s a fun fact, the role of Anita has won as many oscars as the Joker: 2) who is like “maria. Wtf’ and Maira is like “well but I love him and since you chased him out and the cops are here so can you give him a message saying that I will be coming to the soda shoppe in a moment” and Anita is like “you have convinced me. I guess :/”

See the problem here is that Tony is waiting in the place where the white gang hangs out, and they are 1) pissed and 2) racist, and when they see the girlfriend of the guy who killed their leader, they do not let her through, they do not let her tell Tony anything, because instead, they attempt to assault her. Anita, who was almost convinced that all white boys weren’t inherently evil, is like “nah I was right the first time, fuck all of you.” and tells the boys that Maria is dead, which leads to Tony Romeo-ing it up and hastily committing suicide by guy who’s mad and has gun. As one does. 

 Here, although clearly not racially charged but rather wrapped up in the hatred of the covenant (I guess that’s xenophobic?), the UNSC does not give her a chance to say her piece, even as JMC is in grave danger. Though we thankfully don’t get any sexual violence, Makee is electrocuted aggressively, proving to her that her inital judgements that humans are bad actually was right the whole time. 

Significantly though, Anita herself did not do anything wrong, the way Makee did. And of course, Anita and Maria both live through the events of the show. Makee, who was evil, I do not believe will be living much past this

i'm interested - idk if you've ever answered this before, but what are your favourite bleach ships, canon and not?

We present two canon ships and two fanon ships, all of which we love dearly:

Byakuya and Zaraki fucked in the dangai (canon)

Hisagi/Ishida, because Hisagi said it first (also canon)

Hisagi/Akon, wherein, as Dieselsexuals, their relationship is structured by and around watching Fast and Furious movies together (canon to us)

Hitsugaya/Byakuya/Aizen, in the Bleach Rock Musical verse (canon to us)

whipplefilter: I don’t really SHIP ship things. At least, I do not consider a ship, and have something swell in me, something that provokes the thoughts, and gives me experiences that are meaningful and precious. I love character relationships, absolutely, THE BEST THING, the thing I will devote my life to!! But I think when people talk about their ships, or shipping, I get the impression they’re talking about that and also something more than that, and that’s not my experience of pairings.

As far as fanworks go: For art, I’m happy to see renditions of most anything! For fic I mostly read HitsuHina and RenRuki, because they are my top blorbos, but there are a lot of pairings I’d probably read if something pinged me in an excerpt or summary. For example, I LOVE Emergent Properties, which is a Grimmjow/Akon fic by @berrymascarpone. I haven’t read very much doomed Matsumoto/Ichimaru, but their scenes in the Winter War chapters may be my highlight of that entire arc.

I also do not really ride or die for any particular ship (unless it’s Dieselsexual Hisagi/Akon). As long as it’s well-written/well-presented and I can see the characters meshing, I’m down to try just about anything. Like whipplefilter, I’m mostly interested in characters, and if an exploration of their character is through the lens of a relationship, that’s what piques my interest!

In terms of pairings I usually find myself reading, it’s usually RenRuki, IchiHime, because that’s what seems to come across my dash. I just want to add that I find Grimmjow/Akon very interesting, and @chujellies has some art that really makes my mind go brr. But there’s other pairings that I also really enjoy thinking about (in no particular order):
