     the fingers on the back of his neck are stinging and cold but they are not unwelcome. r. entirely blames himself for not remembering to bring gloves for either of them when he could easily have predicted this. he’d cuss or be dramatic about it, but he thinks it might lead into some sermon on shared responsibility (whatever) or his famed negligence of self (they have the time for it). instead the contact between his skin and e.’s makes him puff out air in the same way someone would if they had been trying to hold their breath; like the friction prompts the release. you have no idea, do you, mathieu? his own fingers stiffly tab against the steering wheel before he latches to it more firmly. repressing any other impulse while e. continues to talk exactly like he had before; peering straight ahead or out the window (and occasionally at him) like nothing in the air just shifted and like he’s not touching him. everything, from e. candidly explaining his bourgeoisie relatives to him (preemptive warnings, precautionary tales) to the fucking hand on him, feels fishy to him.  

     it takes r. a while to finally snap, impetuously cutting him off, “remind me why i agreed to drive you when it’s a million minus-degrees outside? and, while you’re at it, why are we going to see the family you despise exactly? you’re freezing in a car, stuck with me, and for what?” he’s rarely quiet and especially if he’s bursting with questions. he can’t help that this how he reacts (especially when he’s also miserable and cold and stupidly aroused, too), “i know you don’t want to be telling me all of this. not really. and besides, i think you might like me if less if i know you so well.” its too much of a gamble; trading in his tiny sliver of something (which may as well be nothing but a temporary need for somewhere to warm him hands) for the unlikely chance of gaining some or the more likely chance losing everything.

hi, i don't know if you've seen the statistics for the arab.org clicks but in the last quarter of 2023, they generated $380 for unrwa - not a huge amount in context of palestinians who need much more than that to leave gaza, but nobody had to donate those dollars. those were generated. and generally, they raise ~$100 per quarter, with most of it coming from their own bridging the gap of donations to make it worth it. i got curious and looked at the stats yesterday and just thought i'd point it out because i feel like people don't see the results of the "daily click" and maybe this would prove that it is actually well worth it. wishing you well <3

LET ME YELL ABOUT MY BLORBOS

tae-seong ( known to most as simply 'tae' ), older than jake by only three years, but still becoming the unattainable standard. jake and tae-seong were quite close until the pak family moved to the states, and tae-seong entered middle school. though never intentionally cruel, he began to think of hanging around his little brother as lame. by this point, his priorities were already gearing more towards his studies ( something jake would soon struggle with ). tae-seong takes after their father a lot, and frequently acted as a stand-in when he would be away on business ( much to jake's disdain ).

jake is incredibly jealous of his brother. he will tell you otherwise. he will swear up and down that he doesn't care about what his parents think, and he especially doesn't care about what tae-seong thinks, nor does he care about him working on his law degree from fucking yale, but he is lying; he spent a lot of his teen years trying to claw his way to tae-seong's level, trying to work out why he couldn't simply just apply himself in the same way his brother could. when jake failed out of college, he didn't immediately imagine his father's distain; he imagined tae-seong's, despite having barely spoken to him in years outside of family gatherings.

hyun-ah ( known to most as 'hannah' ), the baby of the family, born when jake was nine, and was sixteen at the time of his disappearance. he would do anything for her. at the initial ( and unexpected ) news of a baby sibling, jake and tae-seong glanced at each other and scrunched up their faces, but it didn't take very long for them to come around. being a bit of a 'miracle child' meant that hyun-ah was quite spoiled, but even so, jake adored her, and would always make time for her when others couldn't. for reasons jake couldn't comprehend, hyun-ah looked up to him, thought he was the 'cool' one, despite everything. on his bad days ( which became more frequent as he got older ), she would be his reason for getting out of bed in the morning and trying.

jake was extremely close to his sister, and it tears him up inside to think of what their father must've told her after he was taken into the fog, to think of how abandoned she must feel.
