i also just like. don't know if i can even explain in words how Peak Bush Administration the entire premise of SPN is. saving people, hunting things, which even if they might have been people once are now categorically just monsters and demons that can only be dealt with by extermination
idk i keep coming back to the way this show was absolutely, from day one, aiming to fill the ecological niche that X-Files vacated after 9/11. how many XF cases of the week boiled down to "just some guy having The Weirdest Fucking Day"? (replace "guy" or "day" with the appropriate noun or time period as needed, etc.) even the ones that were inherent threats, how many just fucked back off into the unknown at the end?
the nature of the protagonists, the villains, the mythology, the goals and methods and acceptable resolutions, even the uh. disparity. in how much shit recurs along predictably gendered lines in each case-of-the-week... it's just really, really hard to look at SPN with fresh eyes and not see a deeply unflattering sign of the times, especially on direct comparison with one of its most direct predecessors.
(i will grant that the comparison springs extra-readily to mind in s1, where even in my crappy 480p rips you can still see the film grain, and it's visually obvious how much closer 2005 is to 1993 than it is to 2022. yeah, time just punched me in the face too, don't worry about it.)
