you could never understand. but as much as you were put off by the strange little store, curiosity gnawed at you with equal strength.

because of that, the day you entered the shop for the first time late one night, you left all of your concerns at the door.

thus, they were content with watching you from a distance. they ensured you never noticed their dark eyes following you, only daring to observe you passing in their peripherals or looking in your direction after you had walked far enough away. how wonderful your appearance was... a lovely sight that always brightened up the monotony of their work days. it was so fun to see you go about your life, it satisfied them enough to not mind your lack of connection.

though, sometimes... they couldn't help but imagine the animals they were tearing apart were the folk they occasionally saw you talking to. to tear their skin off of them, cut them into filets and send them far, far away from you... they ideated about it more times than they'd admit. why did you have to interact with others in front of them?

the day you actually entered their shop was a day they'd never forget. they thought they were dreaming when you walked in, shivering from the cold of the night seeking warmth and food in their establishment for the first time. you'd started a new job, see, and your shift ended well after everything else had closed. you were forced to forgo dinner and you were starved. so rhodes' butchery was the only place nearby you could visit.

you were intimidated by them, admittedly. their hulking frame, blank expression, and rough voice combined with the blood and gore constantly clinging to their apron was enough to put anyone on edge. but they couldn't be that bad, right?

their rampant emotions were hidden behind the unwaveringly neutral expression they always held, and you were none the wiser to their thudding heart and the slight tremble in their hands as they took your order.

the exchange was simple enough — you ordered a sandwich and something warm to drink, they made it for you, and you'd sit in one of the few chairs scattering the deli's entrance to enjoy your food and try to wind down after your shift.

and just like that, a routine was established.

you got to know rhodes as you continued to visit their place of work. they weren't scary, just awkward! or so you told yourself. but they were so easy to talk to — albeit not the best conversationalist, they were a superb listener. they'd devote their full attention to you every time you spoke to them, not daring to breathe a word so they wouldn't interrupt your lovely voice. they'd learn everything they could about you during your conversations. how you were gradually getting used to your new job, how it was a good thing they were open so late, how you were grateful for their work... things that they'd replay in their mind over and over again when you left.

you never really thought much of it when rhodes began giving you food on the house, using various excuses from not wanting to have to reopen the register to having conveniently already made your favorite sandwich earlier that day for a canceled order. you were friends now! of course they'd want to do you favors.

you also never really thought of it when the coworker who you'd complained about to them a few times stopped coming to work, either. they made an enemy out of so many people at your job, maybe they got fired? it wasn't any of your business.

rhodes had no clue how they'd get closer to you just yet. but now that you were seeing them regularly, they didn't mind settling for making your life a bit easier.

in any way they could.

after all, no one was going to question a butcher for having bloodied clothes.

rhodes still calls the shots in your relationship and is usually the one that gets to have you first. they’re bigger, stronger, and much, much meaner than abe, so even if he did try to stand up for himself they’d easily put him in his place. but that doesn’t stop abe from getting substantially whinier for your attention, trying to snag you away from rhodes whenever they’re too busy to keep their eye on you. abe tries taking you wherever he can — closets, alleys, his car, anywhere to have just a little alone time before rhodes inevitably notices your absence and snatches you away from him again. he tries not to mind, he knows you love him, it’s not your fault that big brute can’t keep their hands off you :(

rhodes, meanwhile, doesn’t think much of abe. they see him as a scavenger or a benign parasite with how quick he is to take what he thinks he can get away with taking. but that doesn’t stop them from reminding you both of who you belong to, and if that means bending you over in front of him and fucking you while he watches then so be it. they leave big, swollen marks and bruises all over you to leave little space for abe to lay his own claim, and anything he does manage to leave on you is promptly taken over by a hickey or welt twice its size. if he’s been good and asks real nicely, though, rhodes may even let him join in — they do like watching how desperate he gets, trying so hard to last when he’s allowed to take his time for once <3 he’s the most pathetic man they’ve ever met, so much so that it almost isn’t fun to toy with him. almost.

the pair learn to somewhat get along eventually. they have the same goals after all, and honestly they aren’t as dissimilar as they may seem on the surface. but until then, you’ll have to deal with being trapped in the pair’s constant vying for you.

i decided to answer this for all of my yandere ocs bc im a sucker for found family/single parent tropes 🫶 cw! spoilers for future ocs + mentions of child neglect

🚼 the yanderes x single parent darling

⛪️ | abraham would be a bit surprised, to say the least. but he comes from a community where people get married and have kids the moment they’re out of high school (if not the moment they become adults) so while he would be sort of caught off guard, he’d adapt pretty quickly. he’d definitely fantasize about becoming a little family unit, probably even subtly propose the idea of expanding every so often. he wouldn’t exactly love your child — at least, definitely not the way he loves you — but you wouldn’t be able to tell with how well he treats them.

🚬 | the delinquents would be more like four older brothers more than anything. theyre all a bit too young to take on a proper parental role, nor would any of them have a real desire to, but they’d definitely have fun sharing their singular shared braincell with your kid. your child would probably grow up to be a massive little troublemaker thanks to their influence, but that’s why you love them, right? if the other parent is still involved one way or another though, they’d immediately put a stop to that. no reason to be involved with your ex now that they’re in the picture.

🌲 | mykolas would be curious of your child. he’s never seen such a young human up close before (considering he was always accused of eating them) so having a chance to actually be around one would be a new experience for him. he’d quickly start to refer to your child as his own, calling them his cub more than their name and carry them around on his shoulders or head whenever they go out together. it wouldn’t be uncommon to see him protectively curled up around them while they’re taking a nap.

🪸 | similarly to mykolas, the mermaids would be sort of curious about your child, though arguably less so as they have seen human children before. they have a very vague understanding of how to care for your child and would constantly search the sea for things that could come in handy for caring for them — you can expect to have a constant supply of eroded toys and suspiciously good quality clothes for them. they’d also try to teach them things that they’d teach the fry of their pods, though obviously they can only do so much teaching something that isn’t meant to live in the sea lol.

💪 | valentina grew up as a parentified older sibling, so while she wouldn’t particularly enthused about taking the role again so soon after getting out of it, she’d be capable of adapting to the role. she knows how to take care of a child and would ensure your kid’s cared for when they’re being watched by her, but she probably wouldn’t be able to establish much of an emotional connection to them without making an active effort to. but she does love children, so she’d learn to love yours too.

👑 | althea would hate your child. plain and simple. she’d view them as the living embodiment of you not keeping your promise to her, of you giving your love to someone else before she had the chance to have you to herself. while she’d never overtly mistreat your child, she’d be incredibly cold toward them and try to find reasons to avoid interacting with them. they’d be spoiled relentlessly with the hopes that if she gave them everything they’d need to live, neither you or her would have to deal with them.

🥩 | rhodes wouldn’t think much of your kid for the most part, but they’d express a gentle fondness for them the few times they do meet them. they’d affectionately greet them, offer them a treat, and hold a little conversation with them to keep them busy for a bit while you run errands or eat or whatever you need to do. they’re kind of awkward with children given they have nothing in common with them and have little experience with them, but surprisingly they’re a natural with yours.

🫀 | melchior has no interest in human kids. therefore they wouldn’t care much for yours, seeing your child more like a pet or something along those lines rather than a sapient being. their treatment of them would reflect that; they wouldn’t be necessarily mean or anything, but they’d be a bit patronizing and talk at them more than they’d talk to them. it isn’t out of malice, they’d genuinely think that that’s how you interact with children and any attempts to correct them would be met with confusion and frowns.

🕷️ | the alt kids would be wonderful parents to your kid. they’d more or less be sort of a mix of abe and the delinquents, but with the added bonus that they’d care deeply for your child as they’d see them as an extension of you rather than a mix of you with someone else. they’d come up with a system to help your child have a good upbringing and stick with it — faust would take up helping them study, anton would teach them manners and etiquette, and delta would help them with their social life. they’re so good for you and your child, see? they live for the idea that them treating your child well and loving them will make you love them all more in turn.

· their back is covered in massive, jagged scars. they don't talk about where they came from

· the majority of their income comes from selling their product in bulk to restaurants and bigger food related businesses; hence why their deli is still running despite not many people coming to it

· additionally, they're an incredible chef and offer catering services too. but they mostly prefer restricting their culinary skills to their deli and personal life.

· they're in an area where a lot of strays live, so it's not uncommon for them to take a few in for a bit; especially during colder days when they need the shelter. they have and will continue to lose sleep trying to ensure a litter of kittens make it through the night.

rhodes had been awake for hours at this point. they’d watched the sun slowly rise through the closed curtains on their window, the minutes tick by on the clock on their nightstand, and your eyes fluttering under your eyelids as you slept. from six am, to eight, to ten. they didn’t dare to move, refusing to risk waking you up when you were tucked against them so comfortably in their arms.

the feeling of you stirring against them made their heart bloom in their chest. you were so adorable… so peaceful. so vulnerable for them. they wished mornings like this could last forever. they loved to watch over you while you slept and would prolong the experience for as long as they could.

you needed this. you had been so exhausted lately and the idea of rejoining the rest of the world so soon was too much for you to handle. rhodes, finely attuned to your needs, picked this up immediately. so when they instinctively held you to their chest and squeezed you with the amount of pressure they knew you liked, you relaxed once more.

"love you," rhodes mumbled, their voice gravelly. "..need you. more than anything."

soothed by their words and their hold, your eyes fluttered shut once more.

"i love you too," you responded in turn, burying your face into their neck.

the way you clung to them, desperate to escape the world for a bit, was just too sweet to deny. they pulled you tighter against their body, kissing your head again.

"mine," they quietly added, "my lamb. i love you."

any responsibilities that they had that morning were pushed back the moment you asked them to stay. the world could wait for the two of you to join it.

for now, they'd shield you from reality for as long as you needed them to.

for starters : yes, rhodes process whole animals. they prefer getting their product directly from farms rather than slaughterhouses because it ensures they have higher quality product, plus it means less of the animal goes to waste as they try to use all parts of it in one way or another.

second, rhodes would be pleasantly charmed by a darling that’s interested in the process! though they’d insist you stay a reasonable distance away, both so you don’t get any mess on you and because the equipment they use is dangerous and they don’t want you near it. but they’re happy to explain the process of breaking down/preparing the various different animals they get in, how they memorized various cuts and where they’d be on the human body (as a fun fact!). eventually they’d grow to trust you enough to let you assist them in their work if you really wanted to.

it’d be the cutest thing to them, seeing you so fascinated by such a major yet mundane part of their life. carving up animals is so second nature to them that they’de see nothing really interesting about it. the warm fuzzy feeling they get in their chest whenever you ask anything relating to butchery would be what they live for. after some time they would allow you to assist them if you really wanted to, giving you the job of collecting blood/organs to set aside while they process the rest of the carcass.

rhodes hardly goes out as it is, but they aren't unfamiliar with the occasional odd glance or rude remark thrown their way when they do. they're tall, quiet, and their usually unchanging expression isn't one that radiates approachability. but they don't care about what others think about them (why would they? your opinion is the only one that matters to them).

so when you're out together and someone drops a snarky comment about them, they wouldn't even react. if the comment's toward or about you, though, they'll take it as the offender trying to encroach on what's theirs and really get hostile.

it'd surprise them quite a bit when you'd snap back before they could even respond. they wouldn't sat anything or even really react externally, but on the inside they're screaming. you're trying to protect them? even though you can't? it's painfully adorable and it'd take a lot of willpower for them to not squish you in that moment.

💪 | valentina absolutely refuses to allow you to work out at the gym. you could hurt yourself real bad if you passed out on or near any of the equipment! she’ll make a special routine comprised mostly of stretching and exercise that doesn’t require equipment so you can still get fit without risking your safety. she’d ensure you make it to every doctor’s appointment on time, take whatever meds you may need, and constantly have food and water at the ready to keep your energy up as much as possible. she’d probably be the best at handling your illness, really — her expertise on fitness and health would tie in very well with her ability to help you and she’d be determined to alleviate your symptoms as best as she could.

🥩 | rhodes would want to keep you locked up all the time. it’d take a lot of willpower for them to not lock you in their room when you faint at their place. they wouldn’t act on their desire to keep you under their watch at all times, but they’d definitely make up lots of reasons to have you stay over so they can be sure you’re safe when you do have an episode. maybe you left your meds at their place, or your aircon mysteriously broke and you need somewhere cool to rest, or maybe they simply asked you to stay with them for a while because they’re worried. they don’t care if they come off as pressuring, your safety comes before anything else.
