It’s rainy night like these that take her back to her days at the orphanage. The leaking of the rainwater onto her head, the sounds of the other children shrinking after each thunder clap, the way Allen used to get so frustrated when his inventions shorted out from the water; all of it had been engraved into Ruri’s memory. Everything from her time in that hellscape was like that to the point where she still had bad dreams about it every so often, despite having lived in Madár for months now.

It’s the combination of the storm outside and her bad dreams that makes her unable to sleep that night, having spent hours tossing and turning in her bed. She just couldn’t get to sleep. Blocking out the sounds with a pillow didn’t work, and neither did trying to think about something else. On top of all of that, her back pain from her scars flared up again, almost like the shadow of the headmaster of the orphanage and her terror still hung over her.

However, where there is darkness and fear, there is is light and comfort. For the young wingless heir, that comes in form of her elder brother and a gentle touch he places on her head. Ever since she’s met him, she’s felt...safer with him near. Was it because he was her bodyguard? Perhaps, but she would like to think it’s more because of their familial bond. It explained why she felt so comfortable going with Shun in the first place. Not just anyone would suddenly trust a winged soldier who claimed you were the heir to a magical place of winged folk, right?

Her breathing slows as she feels the warmth of his hand, instantly calming the anxious feeling deep in the fit of her stomach. It wasn’t often he showed this softer side to himself. Most of the time Shun acted so serious and professional around her, as if he forgot the fact she and him were brother and sister. Yet, it is moments like this that reminder her of the truth of their dynamic, as complicated as it may be.

He may be her royal guard on paper and to the rest of the kingdom, but to her and those who knew the two Kuroskai youths closely, they were wholeheartedly brother and sister. It was just...taking some time to fully adjust to everything, which Ruri can fully understand despite how hard it can be at points. And if there is anything she’s learned since having been found by her brother again, is that the best things in life often are the ones one must be patient for.

“Thank you, Brother. I...I never liked storms. However, I...I know...I know I can face them with you by my side. Just like I can face anything that comes our way...”

Her wishes on those stars for so many years had come true. She had been given a family of her own, and that’s something she’d never take for granted, even if she just wishes being family would be the only thing Shun would focus on instead of his ‘duty’ to the heir of Madár...

“Brother...!” The outburst escapes her lips that are just as painful as his own, magenta eyes staring at the damaged golden ones of her older brother. This war has truly changed everything and everyone. Smiles no longer existed on people’s faces, instead expressions of hatred and fear as they are forced to fight for their survival. Dueling was no longer a way to connect people together in happiness. And worst of all...those closest to her had been taken from her, in more ways than one.

This includes her own brother who these days seemed unrecognizable. Shun always had somewhat of a chip on his shoulder, but he was a loving and caring individual. Now, though? All she saw was a soldier hell bent on vengeance, not dissimilar from the ones she continued to protect those who remained from. It made her heart ache to see him like this, to see him deteriorating just like Heartland before her very eyes...

“Please, please don’t give up hope! I know it’s difficult to do in our circumstances, but we must! We must keep hope alive, hope we can bring back the smiles to Heartland! And...we can’t do that by fighting like our enemies!” The tears have spilled over, just as her heart has spilled all over her words. Ruri was pleading with all her might to her brother, desperate to try and save him from this path. What kind of sister would she be if she didn’t try?

Her hands come to gently yet snakingly touch his duel disk, one recently modified with some technology repurposed from some Academia soldiers. With this power, not only could the Resistance dimension travel, they could also...

“Brother...Please...Please don’t do what our enemy does to us....Promise me you won’t card anyone! Promise me, Shun!”

It had been almost a week since she had spoken to Shun last, the young heir to the winged land starting to get worried. Their discussion the night after Allen’s arrival had been quite heated, both siblings saying harmful words to each other. It brought Ruri to tears, and if it was not for Yuto being at her side throughout that night, she isn’t sure how she could have recovered the strength to face the people of Mádar during tonight’s huge event.

It was the official presentation of Ruri to everyone in the land, an event she had been so nervous about ever since hearing about it from Shun a few weeks back. She still wasn’t sure she was fit enough for such an important role, especially since she didn’t exactly desire wealth or jewels. Being able to live in simply in peace with those she cared about was enough for the girl in all honesty. Though, that was sadly not the hand she was dealt, but instead that of an heiress to a winged land when she herself had no wings to speak of.

The eyes of everyone had been constantly on her the entire evening, Ruri currently sitting on a balcony overlooking the packed ballroom. While she no doubted looked physically beautiful, having gotten some assistance from Miss Mai, the hesitation in her eyes and in the way her body shook in her seat was certainly not what was proper for someone in her position. The anxiety of the event, along with Shun being no where to be found, was overtaking her. And honesty? She feels like she might break at any moment.

“Huh...?” Magenta eyes then widen slightly as she feels a touch on her shoulder, head turning to glance over it to find it was Yuto’s hand that had been placed there. The gesture was a silent one. She had come to realize that he was not the most talkative, but rather expressed himself through his actions more often than not. Shun was like that too, which is why the fact he was no where to be found spoke volumes for how he must be feeling right now.

“Yuto...” Ruri speaks his name as she looks at him, her expression molding into the soft and gentle smile she was known for. “Thank you. I...I needed that. There is just... a lot on my mind, right now. Is there...Is there still no sign of Shun anywhere? I know he’s mad at me, but...I thought he’d at least want to attend the event to help with security at the very least.”
