Clarence Turay, Arasaka Chief of Security

Clarence is Bri’s chief of security and my most beloved npc.

A short bio: Clarence Turay, British-Sierra Leonean. 48 years old in 2077. His extended family is successful in the African-owned space construction industry. Clarence discovered an overt discomfort with space travel/living after a short tenure at an orbital space construction station under his uncle. He signed up with security forces for Arasaka in London after. His promotion to the highest tier was swift and with many accolades. He became Landry’s chief of security one year prior her transfer to NC in 2075 and is on a three-year rotation set to end in 2077. His next gig will take him to HQ to become a distinguished chief security instructor (a much deserved break from the field). He is often seen wearing a detachable Opti-Shield. Clarence takes his job very seriously, has a stern personality and no nonsense take on situations.

Brianne’s Empathy

Brianne has the signs and symptoms of an empath. Empaths are highly sensitive individuals. They have a keen ability to sense what people around them are thinking and feeling.

Being an empath makes it difficult for her to set boundaries and say no, even when a lot is being asked of her.

People often take advantage of her kindness.

She has a tendency to feel drained after spending a long amount of time around other people.

Alone time is needed to recharge (which is easy enough since she lives alone).

Receiving anger and disappointment from others can be damaging to her (she always wants to please people to avoid this).

She is often plagued by self-doubt, stress, and anxiety (common ailments among empaths).

She forgets to leave emotional space for herself (“I will cry for you, but I will not cry for myself.” “I am fine.” Her tendency to be selfless).

Violence and horror deeply upset her.

Over time, Brianne learned to compartmentalize work and her emotions as best she can. It is necessary when working for Arasaka where human atrocities are par for the course. For instance, being Director of Operational Oversight requires her to review operations which at times include death, destruction, and other horrors. Her decisions and audits can lead to employee dismissals or death. She knows her expectations and responsibilities trump whatever emotions she may wield. Thus, she delineates hard truths into project needs, corporate needs, and employee needs, making them route tasks. She distances herself, focusing on protocol and rules (always by the book), while trying not to bring her work home with her. It’s a struggle.

She’s also learned to be more careful with who she hands her emotions. This is in part why she has become reclusive over the years, unwilling to let people in despite a desire for human connection beyond her blood ties. A person of a million acquaintances, few friends. It’s primarily an act of self-preservation, not only from being emotionally drained but from being taken advantage of. Her trust in people is in short supply.

Bri is, to put it bluntly, a money launderer backed by a family-owned Fortune 500 financial investment company. Because I am on this subject, Brianne is in her early to mid-50s in her Far Cry New Dawn verse. While in relatively good health (and had to be to depart on a convoy to North America), she is developing osteoarthritis in her hands, her right knee, and hip, and her eyesight is no longer 20/20. I love how gardening is a mainstay of every verse for Bri thus far:

In Cyberpunk 2077, when Bri is dismissed from Arasaka, changes her identity, and moves estates to go into hiding from corp retribution, the little greenhouse in her new backyard becomes her haven to grow and heal from the loss of family and self. It remains a beloved hobby for the rest of her life.

In Far Cry, gardening is her hobby but her busy schedule and constant travel away from her London home means her garden goes neglected. She ends up building a small garden on Rook Island, tucked away safe by Santiago’s abode, to tend and pass the time while there on extended layovers. 

In Far Cry New Dawn, her hobby pre-Collapse becomes her specialty in the new world. She is trained in horticulture and herbal remedies to be a contributing member of the community and French convoy to North America. With her Highwaymen chapter, she manages their gardens, growing herbs for healing, produce for consumption, and most importantly, weed to consume and for the trade of ethanol.

Service

Brianne is one of several high-ranking executives who sit on the Arasaka Academy board. Considering her positive stance on education, she was pleased to receive the nomination and happily accepted the position despite having a lot on her plate. Beyond rubber stamping Academy decisions, she oversees applicants for the corp's exclusive internship program and serves as a mentor for interns during their tenure. She enjoys working with students and aiding their first steps in the corpo world.

ah, the old soul, nice to meet again. the time of ages is etched into your bones, you see clearly. you've watched the heartache in this realm and sworn to solve it. but kindness without limits is self destruction. oh little leaf, strong and wise, you seek to bring peace with your presence. Vez is the only family member that knows Brianne intends NOT to sign her next 20 year contract with Arasaka when her first 20 years expires in 2078. She cannot tell her father or other members of the Landry clan, fearing disappointment and encouragement against doing so. Retirement, however, is something that has been on her mind for well over five years. It is sometimes the only thing that gets her through the stress of each day.

Q: Brianne is too nice to be an Arasaka director. How did she ever last so long?

LISTEN.

Brianne is a legacy hire, channeled into position after position since she started her Arasaka career. Her father is a big wig in Arasaka (COO of Arasaka Bank, ECC). Her uncle is the president of the London branch. Her position was assured and seemingly untouchable in her branch, especially if you didn’t want to evoke the ire of higher ups.

Her wealth bracket put her a step ahead with providing a top of the line education. Boarding schools, tutors, graduate school and securing several internships under her father before being contracted. She still worked her way up the corporate ladder as others, but with assurances in place it was a far easier stride.

She is a restless worker, keeping her dept in order, making other depts accountable for their actions (even Counterintel), able to delegate and define what needs to be done, and someone who pushes for interdepartmental collaboration at every tension point. So yes, she’s is good at her job so it helps.

....BUT this is meaningless when coming to the NUSA branch and being far from family. So to keep her stride she continues these practices:

Instead of threats, Brianne hands out favors. Brianne’s empathy contributes to this approach; she can’t help it. Whenever Brianne discovers someone is needlessly struggling (during evaluations, for instance), she tries to help. Whether that is by pulling some internal strings, reworking evaluations to offset some flags and alleviate pressure, tapping into her connections, or even going to the extreme of obtaining a Corpcracker to get someone out before they lose it. But these favors are like cards. It might not have a price set on it, but they are dealt if her position is threatened.  

She collects dirt on everyone. She employs a solid fixer (Hector Ivanov) to periodically supply her intel on other higher ups and both their and her own immediate subordinates. Anyone who could prove the most threatening to her position. Anything valuable is kept on file to use as collateral if necessary for blackmail. She doesn’t make the first move, but she’s ready to counter theirs. 

Knowing their secrets reminds her to keep her own life and relations clean so her competitors have nothing to use against her or twist. It really dictates her social life or lack there of. This means even old friends like Sarah, who have scandal attached to their name, will inevitably be kept at arms length. Work consumes her life already, and she has to make decisions which go against her heart.

You can imagine her horror in 2076 when Brianne becomes a little too involved with extortionist cyberpsycho, Vaas, and her estate becomes an extension of Heywood for him and his Los Piratas gang. ...No keeping that strategy now and it just further spirals her into bad decision making.
