About the Thunderbolt Fantasy S4 teaser shown at the Pili Fantasy Land Exhibit 2023
From November 9–December 10 in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, Pili held an exhibit called Pili Fantasy Land, where visitors could view a teaser trailer for Thunderbolt Fantasy S4.
While photos (but not videos) were allowed for most of the exhibit, taking photos and/or videos of the teaser was strictly forbidden, so I abided by those rules. (My photos from the exhibit are in this Twitter thread, for anyone interested!)
I was able to visit the exhibit during the tail-end of its second week / the start of its third week. Though two weeks have passed since my visit (things have been hectic, so I only got to write this now), I took notes right after viewing the teaser, so these are my notes fresh from the venue. Putting the details behind a cut for those who'd rather not be spoiled!
Nonetheless, lemme put out a disclaimer that my memory isn't perfect, so despite watching the teaser several times, there might still have been details here and there that I missed.
PLEASE DO NOT REPOST MY WORDS (i.e. copy-paste it then repost it somewhere else, and especially do not pass these off as your own). If you want to share the info, just link to this post or my Fusetter post.
Anyway, on to my notes!
IN GENERAL
No dialogue; just a smattering of scenes
Can't really tell what's going on plot-wise because the scenes shown didn't really have any revealing details: Shang drinking, Lin walking as his clothes flutter in the wind, the camera zooming in on Lang as Azibelpher says something…
6 new characters, presumably all from the Demon Realm, since Urobuchi said in an interview from the Japanese S3 art book that that setting would have a more Western aesthetic
ABOUT THE NEW CHARACTERS
Their designs look more Western but with some Middle Eastern designs/motifs
The teasers briefly showed their puppets plus their 2D concept art
As far as I can tell based on their features: 3 female characters, 3 male characters
No name reveals or VA reveals yet
THE FEMALE CHARACTERS
One has hair buns that look like cat ears; she wears a veil covering the lower half of her face
One is the character that Pili posted when promoting the exhibit. From the photo Pili posted, her outfit looks very Takarazuka-inspired, but seeing her concept art, I felt that some details in the middle part of her outfit looked more Middle Eastern to me
One has an outfit with a plunging neckline, showing her cleavage (iirc her outfit is mainly colored black)
THE MALE CHARACTERS
One blue-haired guy
One is an older, darker-skinned character with an outfit that reminded me of a pharaoh or grand vizier
I'm not 100% sure this character is male but I think so—part of their face is covered with a skull mask, and their robes kinda remind me of Caster from FGO
I went to a CGN partner who opened a coffee shop in Sanghwan, a place that is now one of the most famous place for surfers.
The name is El Union. They started a coffee shop at Sanghwan about 10 years ago.
They became a partner about eight years ago when we brought coffee to this restaurant. It seemed that the shop was closed on Wednesday when we visited, but many customers still visited the shop and the beach and enjoyed the vacation. We were allowed to enter the restaurant, but there were many people who came looking for coffee, and when they found out that they were taking a break, they left with a very sad face.
Coffee tastes completely different depending on the production area, variety, and roasting method.
In the highlands of the Philippines, the arabica species, such as the CGN growing, and elsewhere the major ones are called roasters.I'm ashamed to say that I didn't know anything about coffee at all, so they showed me roaster and arabica coffee.
The Right side is the roaster species. The scent was deep and sweet, and I smell like honey.(For those of you understand…? it smells like chestnut honey.) And on the left is the Arabica species. Is it also related to the fact that arabica species are often made by the washed method ?It is refreshing and has a rather citrus-like scent.
The color of the green beans is very different, the roaster species are deep green, close to brown, and the Arabica species are light green and flat on one side.
They buy green beans from CGN and roast them at this coffee shop, and they are very particular about roast, one of the very important factors that determines the taste of coffee.Surprisingly, all the roasting machines in this coffee shop are automatic. The machine senses the temperature, time, and the movement of the coffee that it can play, and the craftsman control the roast.
Tan, who was originally involved as a barista and CGN staff, recently roasted coffee, told me that the aroma of beans gradually changed from fruit to orange to savory.
Because the roast has a huge impact on the taste of coffee, it depends on how much the roast person can pull it out.He say they roast coffee at this coffee shop because they want to make it worthwhile.
I felt the importance of people working in the parts of the supply chain in order to derive the value of coffee, which used to be less delicious and less in demand. Then, when you get to know these people, they become familiar and warm.We can feel these tought from coffee. I'm writing this blog because I feel that way.
In fact, the coffee Mr. Tan made was very different from the coffee I had thought before, and it was refreshing, a little sweet, and when it was called sugar cane, it smelled like that, and it had a citrus-like feeling like an orange or lemon. It was very interesting. This is Philippine coffee,he said.
(CGN staff member Lily is really familiar with coffee, roast time, method, peach scent, etc.)
I hope you will enjoy the coffee made with the help of these people along with the story.
I was somewhat ambivalent about this show before I started watching it. It didn’t seem like the kind of genre or medium to really interest me. But I gave it a shot since the craftsmanship and art form of the puppetry deserved some attention. And boy, am I glad I did.
The show starts off fairly simple and cosmetic. The show clearly being more about the medium by which the story is told rather than the story itself. As long as I kept that in mind, it was extremely entertaining. Seeing what the puppeteers and artisans could do with dolls and camera work was enthralling to watch. However, as the show continued, particularly as season one began to wrap up, the characters really took on a life of their own and started driving the show.
The way season one wraps up would usually bother me, but it was handled so well and the twist of Shāng’s true motives was so delightful, it made me really appreciate him as a character. And that motive becoming a main driving force in season two kicked this series to the next level, for me.
The second season is a fantastic example of an ensemble cast that stays very well balanced. All of the character dynamics and character driven story beats made this season such a pleasure to watch. On top of that, I think the studio and puppeteers mastered their craft. These expressionless puppets became so life-like through their motions and the camera work. It’s a pretty amazing feat.
As far as story analysis, there’s not much to talk about, really. But this show really isn’t about the story, but rather the fun and lively characters that come to life thanks to the hard work and mastery of the men and women at Nitroplus, Goodsmile & Pili International.
Thunderbolt Fantasy S4 Begins Filming (+ My Translation of Gen Urobuchi's Comments)
Earlier, the official accounts for Thunderbolt Fantasy and Pili announced (in Japanese and English, respectively), that filming of S4 has begun.
Pili's official Twitter and Facebook accounts linked to an article in Chinese with more photos and details regarding the kick-off ceremony.
Meanwhile, TBF's Japanese Twitter account posted a bit of commentary from Gen Urobuchi regarding this bit of news, which I translated via a Twitter thread and am now cross-posting here.
Please do not repost my translation without crediting; link to this post or my Twitter thread instead.
If I have time and/or no one beats me to it, I'll try translating Pili's article as well, though at this point my Japanese is better than my Mandarin... 😅
Comments from Gen Urobuchi in Honor of Thunderbolt Fantasy S4's Start of Filming
What are your expectations for the sequel? What do you have in mind for this production?
Urobuchi: Post-Season 3, I’ve been crafting the plot as a series of vignettes that take a lot of twists and turns.
This next installation is precisely the point when the story reaches the climax.
I want to make the most of the heightened feeling that we’re heading toward the end.
What aspects of filming are you excited for?
Urobuchi: This time, we’re going to dig rather deeply into & shed some light on the past secrets of the main characters.
I’m really looking forward to seeing how those scenes will be translated to film.
Please share some words for fans who have been eagerly waiting for the sequel.
Urobuchi: Thanks to everyone’s support, TBF has been able to become a much longer series than originally envisioned.
We hope to deliver to our fans a superb work that conveys our gratitude to our fans & doesn’t betray their expectations. Please keep the support coming!
