actually, screw it. plot twist, a lot of Fíann's life was a fabricated lie and that's not even her real name. or her real self.
At least not unless you believe that there are different versions of you and that timetravel is possible.
And Flyn Farrell had been, more or less, forced to adopt this belief as a part of her truth.
Not that it was entirely false, of course. Timetravel was possible. The little compass watch that had taken her to the pirate ages, the device that she - or rather Fíann - had found, was real. Fíann Foley wasn't. Flyn Farrell, yes, but not Fíann. Not entirely.
Driven by her year-old interest and experience in playing music and video games, Flyn applied for work as a music composer (and later writer and concept artist) at a video game company which, much later, turned out to have shady reputation. It would be the first time she'd put her studies to more serious use... and it was nothing like designing a board game, which had been what she had been doing for a living until then. Aside from the martial arts lessons.
She had worked at a few smaller companies like that before. Smaller teams, projects that were great yet did not become the next hot famous thing everyone was seeking - but the games were memorable, and the teams were happy with that. Sure, she did get almost uncannily focused and was sometimes so invested in her work that her life stayed on the back burner, but that was good. It meant she liked her job and cared about it. Right?
"The truth is rarely pure and never simple". And that was not all of it. The plan to replace pre-existing supernatural beings with fake ones - as well as some humans who were being too loud and uncomfortable for the government to deal with - had been in motion for a few years by the time Flyn had been collecting experience at work (and not just in Ireland, too, but, slowly, across the whole world). She had gone through life with just the occasional swim, as a mermaid, and she had put most (but not all) of her suspicions to sleep. She was one of the merfolk that slipped through. And not only because there were few who could break her curse of immortality, if it was a curse at all.
Merrick Murchadh was real, as well as their relationship, their friends (some of which would later take his ex-girlfriend's side, and some would stay), and Flyn's mental illnesses. Unfortunately, that part was very much real. Granted, Merrick was under a different name from the one he had in Flyn's game - naturally, much like Flyn herself... and with a far more reputable occupation than lying about spending his rich parents' money (his father was a businessesman, though he had made Merrick follow a path similar to Flyn's) - but he was real, just like Flyn and her friends themselves, and just as insane as he had been in Flyn's game. His company was one of the biggest competitors to the one Flyn worked at, and, claiming falsely that she and her colleagues had stolen an idea originally theirs, Merrick was motivated to bring her down.
In Flyn's game, „Merrick“’s character ended up dead if the players chose the supposedly "better" ending between the two. In real life - similar to the worse ending - he was alive, and alive at a time when VR was being taken to a new level. Some video games and their results now affected real life as well; two such games were one Flyn had been inspired by and the one she had been working on, such a large portion of her game inspired by what her alternate self Fíann Foley had experienced that the lines between what was a part of real life and what was a part of the game were blurred. Aside from doing nothing of true importance, which he was scarily good at, Merrick was an assistant to the head of a company that sold artificial lives and experiences - holidays to places that could be far more expensive if actually experienced in real life, dates for people who thought themselves ugly and many other sorts of, well, fake realities - repackaged in the form of games, of course with some adventure and romance and whatnot sprinkled in, and what both of them were ultimately fighting for was to turn their projects into real, actual, enjoyable games.
That was, until the games bled into reality - until reality bled into the games.

many of my characters have a thing for body modifications and/or tattoos - but it's a slightly different story for all of them
for Rigmor, Fíann and the Corbeaus, they're a sign that they have claimed their bodies again, that these bodies are their own and they are free to decorate them however they please after they have been forbidden to do so and/or express themselves freely. Also, Rigmor treasures tattoos highly as she enjoys doing them
for Hella and Kieran, they're an artistic expression. Although both of them are aware that looks aren't everything, as musicians, they both also rely in part on their image. Also, in a way, Kieran and Rigmor's tattoos being the same before they met strengthens their faith in fate
for Zira, although her clothes seem impractical, they have been tailored specifically for her by her close friends who are dressmakers - as well as an expression of her devotion to them. Friends are her everything

taking a break from writing but I realised what bothered me/why I wanted to rename Fíann or make her into another self of another person or mess with timetravel. For some reason whatever name I give this character it felt weird. Until I found the name 'Flynn' somewhere, again of Irish origin. As well as really liking it, it meant 'reddish' and the character's hair is reddish. It fit in.
Besides, that name reminds me of one of my favorite characters from Tangled (his real name is Eugene but shh). I love his dynamic with Rapunzel, I love the film. Him and my character are kind of similar. He's a swashbuckler, Fíann is also one. He's charming, and so is she.
In the first part of her story, her thing is hiding, staying in the shadows, away from more danger. She's cautious. Maybe you could blame her for it, with how explosive Merrick's temper is and how he has treated her in the past, but that's how it is. In a way, Flynn is everything Fíann was not allowed to/did not allow herself to be, and towards the end of her story Flynn waves her flag freely again.
Fíann still fits the character; she's still as chaotic as the legendary band of warriors. But with Flynn meaning plunderer it feels like it fits her better and captures that morally gray part of her well. She's doing the right thing, even if not for the right reasons, but ultimately the lack of scruples she discovers she has stops her from being a hero.
I'm unsure on whether or not to actually include Fíann meeting Flynn and abandon any realism I was trying to hold onto but we shall see.

which rage language are you?
Tumblr media
the regina george
someone hurts you or pisses you off, and you don't do anything. at first. but you hold that feeling of rage in your chest for weeks after the fact, acting nice but silently hating their guts, pretending like all is forgiven until you can ruin their life and hurt them the way they hurt you. it's calculated. but when you've executed your revenge, will you be satisfied?
Tumblr media
step back
usually, you're able to bottle up your emotions and ignore the frustrations. but, after weeks of shoving everything down, your body needs a release, and i pity the poor person who managed to piss you off. it's screaming crying, shouting, kicking lockers, whatever you can do to get it out of your system. it's a whole jean grey moment, fire and fury blasting out of you.

what's your hate language?
Tumblr media
Violence
Physical Violence is a common, yet bold hate language. It’s old as time and is as natural as rain. It’s often one of the first thoughts that come to us when we feel hatred, but you actually have the moxie to go through with it. Fist fights at bars and you think assassination is the best option in politics. You’re an absolute loose canon. Your most likely crime would be murder. The only down side of this hate language is how hard it is to get away with it.

bottled emotions
tell them. tell them right now. you keep your emotions bottled up and it is doing absolutely no one a favor including you. you're the type of person that incorporates your feelings into art because you have no idea how to say it out loud. you fear rejection and the fact that you might not be good enough. i'm sensing recent heartbreak or unrequited love. if it's for you, it will come back to you. you're enough, i swear.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
abandonment issues
am i really so hard to love? you watch your friends fall in love and watch yourself fall for someone who doesn't like you back. you wait for a familiar feeling only to find out it wasn't familiar at all. codependency. you get left out of things and you get left by people and you don't know why. "it's not me, it's them." let them go. be your own person. you don't need them you only need you.

none of my characters is the type to try to make anyone jealous. even someone they hate. they don't care enough/can't be arsed, and usually if there could be anyone they might want to rile up, that has already been done long before the idea to do it crops up in the mind of anyone they might be hanging around. and yes, this also applies to luceus and fíann, who would be more willing to go out of their way to fuck with people, as well as jareth and rita.
jareth and rita are old enough to not be willing to play games, and if they consider that, it means the relationship with the other person is headed towards destruction.

oh yeah - unlike Jareth and Rigmor who mostly kept things between them civil, Merric absolutely didn't shy away from pulling Fíann's hair, slapping her, shoving her against the wall, using fire to keep her in line, lying to her that he'd hurt her friends or family, skewing her opinion of herself and her friends, blackmailing her and controlling her finances behind her back when he got to them.
Because he was a guy, she doesn't have trouble initiating affection with female friends... But male friends are a different story. And seeing how darn hard friends are to come by in a city full of so many people who would rather have her dead, even if she keeps a lock on it, her desire for physical affection will sometimes slip through the cracks.
Also, in the case that a guy tries to get too close to her too fast, Fíann is absolutely kicking the shit out of him, or biting or scratching or freezing his ass, whichever she gets to first. In self-defense, absolutely. But it's still not a nice thing to do. And somehow Rónan succeeds in getting past this because they trust each other - any new friends that might want to stick around Fíann however will not be so lucky.

Borderlands verse.
Born on Athenas, Fíann was the only daughter of Tadgh /Tige/ and Clodagh /Kloda/ Foghladh, doted on as an only child. Ever since she was young, she exhibited siren-like powers the way her mother and grandmother had (as well as the tattoos; unlike her female ancestors Fíann had them on both of her arms). While she was young, there were few signs as to the change in her character that would take over once she met Merric Murchadh /Murphy/.
Running into each other in highschool, they slowly became close friends - or so Fíann thought. After they started to know each other better Merric became obsessed with her and tried to get her to date him, spreading rumours about her and her family after she turned him down. As he came from a rich and powerful family, Merric succeeded in ruining Fíann and her family’s reputation to mess with her, which caused them to clash countless times, often with Fíann starting the fight, attempting to claw Merric’s eyes out and having to be dragged away from him. Because of his family’s power and because Merric’s parents did not wish to make things more serious, the false claims against Fíann’s family were dropped, although for a long time people believed them to be bandits.
Though Fíann gained a reputation for being chaotic and unpredictable - traits often associated with villains - she took after her parents and became a researcher, wanting to distance herself from her history of violence so as not to bring trouble to her parents. Eventually, she was sent to Pandora to uncover its Vault’s secrets. Used to Athenas and its people and a bit shaken from the journey, Fíann stumbled onto Pandora, curious yet confused. What the hell would she be doing on a planet as barren as this? But soon she got to find out not everything is what it seems to be...

thinking of switching up my characters’ homelands.
It might be a cool idea to also make Fíann, Ríane and Savash fellow Rhampeians Wanoians (my bad, Rhampeia is the country, not the entire continent...), basing West Wanoia off Ireland and the eastern side off Spain.
Kieran, Fíann and Ríane and their families come from the central part of a country in West Wanoia, Eilerland.
Savash, as well as her mother, was born in the coastal part of a country in East Wanoia called Rimicatea, or, as it’s most widely know, the Rimicatean Empire. The irony? It is no longer an empire; in all those countries the power is held by representatives chosen by the people - but after countless victorious wars, Rimicatea was allowed to keep its name. Savash’s father is from Rhampeia, and because she would often get confused as a child Savash would claim she came from there, too, prior to realising she could call both countries her homes.
Rigmor, Arvid, Hella, Lovisa and their families come from the northernmost corner of a cold country called Montia.
And the Corbeaus are from Contia.
(This means I’ll have to overhaul their entire stories but since in my head these countries are based off Ireland, Spain, Sweden and Germany respectively, there may not be a need for complete change.)
(Also, approximate pronunciation: Mon-TEE-a {Montia}, Konteea {Contia} [no stressing here], RAM-pee-a {Rhampeia}, Wah-NO-ya {Wanoia}.)

Fíann's very first encounter with another character ends up in her headbutting him so hard he faints. This means that a) she's strong enough to do something like this, and it was the strength, the clothes and the way she carries herself that tricked people into seeing her as a man, and b) Ríane (who was also disguised as a man in that moment) decides not to fuck with her based only off of this

hc;; unlike Rigmor, who’s the exact opposite in this regard because of the ways her mother treated her, if sb becomes close to Fíann, her family knows very soon. Despite all the lies Merric tried to and succeeded to make her believe for a while, she kept her family close and held onto them.
Fíann’s parents are far nicer than Rigmor’s if there can even be a comparison. Not in the my parents are my best friends kind of way, but... they trust each other and stick together, and neither Fíann nor her parents hold back from pointing out each other’s mistakes when there’s any, and they’re honest and calm about it.
Fíann’s parents are people she never has and would never lie to, no matter what. She’s close to her grandparents in a similar way, and she tries to live the way they had and have a relationship to nature like the one they had.
