here’s   how   i   interpret   the   shadowgast   relationship   timeline,   by   the   way:   

yes,   liam   says   “eventually   caleb   will   be   an   old   man,   and   essek   will   be   essek,”   but   i   don’t   interpret   that   as   meaning   that   they   part   ways   when   caleb   is   old.      i   think   they   spend   some   very   nice,   companionable   time   together      (   maybe   a   couple   years,   but   not   more   than   that   ),      and   then   they   part   ways,   and   caleb   returns   home   to   teach   at   the   academy   when   he   is   still   in   his   thirties.      their   ‘friendship’   that   continues   over   time   is   always   flavored   with   that   affection,   however,   and   they   are   close   until   the   very   end,   even   when   they   must   fall   out   of   touch   with   one   another   for   essek’s   safety.      and   essek   is   certainly   there   at   the   end   with   and   for   caleb.
