deep, calming breaths. those are the only kind narcissa is letting herself take right now, as she gazes around at the mess of her grounds. the black manor, her school, and the destroyed celebration of the light. the winter solstice had always been her favourite day of the year. it was about balance. dark and light bleeding into one another — just like her, sometimes more one than the other, but not letting either take full control of her being, just like the earth she rotated between the two extremes.
she catches sight of frank, when she walks inside, after making sure all the students and their parents are safe. against all odds, she finds the sight of him comforting. frank longbottom was an unknown factor, a man from a well respected family — a man who faced expectations almost as heavy as her own. her breath stutters, just a little bit, when she settles beside him. "i'm considering homicide," she tells him, "for when we find out who is responsible for this attack."

narcissa couldn't help but smile as she watched the families around her smile and laugh together. the grounds of the manor were decorated beautifully, to compliment the snow on the ground. she made sure all the children were equipped with warming charms to keep them from catching a chill as she talked them through the stars that they could see above them. narcissa may not have been named for the stars like the rest of her family, but she loved them just as dearly. teaching astronomy was one of her great joys in life. she smiled a little wider as she glanced at the presence beside her. it was distinctly not a child. "you can try too, you know? it isn't just for the children. if your eyes are sharp enough, you may be able to see jupiter and her moons."

she descends the stairs in the entrance hall of the school with steady footsteps, hand on the bannister — it was old, dark wood, original to the house. this was the manor in which their grandparents had lived, once upon a time, before they died. she had kept many of the original features when she established a school there — except for the artifacts that were likely to curse someone, or make the students of less-than-pure blood uncomfortable. her brow raises when she reaches the hall and sees who awaits her there.
"cousin," she greets, slightly stilted. "when they told me that i had a visitor, i didn't expect it to be you." that was the truth. she hasn't seen regulus for some time now. they had started walking down different paths — he was a fanatic of the dark lord, she knew that much. but she was also his cousin, and... he had always been her favourite, if she was being honest with herself. she adored little regulus from the very moment that he was born. black's put each other first, and narcissa has always loved her family above all else, no matter what side of the war they are on. "i've heard that the english aurors are working themselves into quite a tizzy, looking for you. may i ask what brings you to my doors?"

( @alicexxnott — ) today was supposed to be a good day — or as good as they could make it. narcissa had an easy job, after all. she took care of the children and their parents and made them believe that things could be good and happy, that the solstice would bring new light to the world. she did this happily, while the rest of the order met inside the house, inside the school he had created here in scotland. it was never supposed to end with blood and fear. on this, the darkest night of the year, that was the last thing they needed. narcissa has to admit that she's reeling. she isn't sure what to do, in the aftermath. she's relatively unscathed, and she has to wonder if that is because the masked death eaters might have known her. damaging narcissa black wouldn't be the smartest idea in the world. all she walked away with were a few scratches, one dull one across her cheek. she's numb with it, and the fear over what happened. yet she holds herself together and refuses to show that fear blatantly. fear was weakness, and she would not let the world see her tremble. she breathes a sigh of relief when she sees alice. "you're alright?" she asks, trying to sound calm.

( @loneliiest — ) "I hope you aren't feeling the cold too intensely, Miss Ross." Narcissa tells the girl. Pandora Ross, yes, that was her. She was a darling little thing. Narcissa couldn't say they were close, particularly, but circles were small these days, and Narcissa knew one of her own when she saw them. "The snow makes for a beautiful scene, but it really is hard to ward against the chill of it."

( @bewitchcd — ) "Sister." She says, her voice softer than she would usually allow it to be. Andromeda, in the flesh — it was always a sight to behold. Her sister. They were Narcissa's life blood, her most precious things. For all her life, all she had wanted to do was hoard them and protect them, keep them close to her chest so that she would never need to be without them. It always made her smile when she got to see Andromeda. It allowed her to inhabit a warmer kind of personhood. "I'm glad you came tonight." She glances up at the sky. "Even the stars have come out in celebration of you."
