Stranger Things 4 | Chapter Five: The Nina Project
“In 1786, Nicolas Dalayrac wrote an opera called Nina. It’s the story of a young woman whose lover was killed in a duel. Nina was so traumatized that she buried the memory. It was as if it never happened. Every day, she would return to the train station to await her lover’s return. A return that would never be. If only Nina could know the truth.”

season 5 theory:
Max said her letters were a failsafe, and they are, but not for their recipients. for herself.
after baby El got Vecna'd she went into a coma and woke up with her memories and powers lost, and it took reviewing all the NINA lab footage to bring it all back.
Max will wake up with amnesia too, and that's why they had her write down how she feels about each person in her life. the letters are Max's NINA. each of her loved ones has to bring back their letter and read it to her (she's blind) and she'll remember them.
and now I'm haunted by this:
In 1786, Nicolas Dalayrac wrote an opera called Nina. It's the story about a young woman whose lover was killed in a duel. Nina was so traumatized that she buried the memory. It was as if it never happened.
considering that was obviously not about El as Nina and Mike as the lover (because if 4 taught us anything it's that Mike isn't El's heart, Max is) what if El is the lover and Max is the Nina.
El has already brought Max's body back but that's not enough, she has to free her consciousness also. all of Vecna's victims are still "with him" and presumably will be freed when he dies, but Max is the only one who has her living body to return to.
what if El fights Vecna harder than ever before, pushing herself far beyond her limits knowing she won't come back from it this time, sacrificing herself so Max can be released and wake up. like swapping their places.
what if El is the only one Max never remembers because El isn't there to bring back her letter. what if Max only knows her through the others' stories, just like how she knew her before they ever met.
or what if somebody does bring Max the El letter and the decision whether to open it torments her, because of course she wants to remember this person who she loved so much but then she literally holds in her hand the ability to spare herself so much grief?
but I am SO SURE they can't really kill El, they wouldn't spend four seasons dangling happiness in front of this poor abused kid and then kill her, and they couldn't kill her for Hopper's arc either, but it's also scary on how many levels El's death makes sense. I think I'm pretty sure she'll have to be almost killed, or fake-killed?
what if instead of actually dying El goes into a coma again (a regular coma because Vecna's dead) and when she wakes up she's lost her powers again and that's just it. she never gets them back and that's fine. because this time they weren't stolen from her, she gave them up for Max. she leaves Eleven behind, dead, and goes on as El, the regular person she's always wanted to be.

i feel like someone mentioned it already BUT:
Tumblr media
[Description: a screenshot of the synopsis section of a wikipedia article. The text reads, "Synopsis: Nina is in love with Germeuil but her father, Count Lindoro, favours another suitor. Germeuil and his rival fight a duel. Nina believes that Germeuil has been killed and goes mad, forgetting aspects of the traumatic incident in a manner consistent with a diagnosis of psychogenic amnesia. She only regains her reason when Germeuil reappears unharmed and her father finally allows him to marry her. End ID.]
why is the synopsis for "Nina" different than the one that Brenner described?
in the show, he says to Eleven:
“It’s the story about a young woman whose lover was killed in a duel. Nina was so traumatized that she buried the memory. It was if it never happened. Every day, she would return to the train station to await her lover’s return. A return that would never be. If only Nina could know the truth. Leave your train station. Stop waiting."
According to Brenner, Nina's lover is dead, and she believes he's alive. In Wiki, Nina's lover is alive, and she believes he's dead.
