This past weekend I saw two performances of Malmö Operas production of Next to Normal (one of them from the front row)
Next to Normal is my favourite musical, very close to my heart and means so much to me. Experiencing it from the front row and being so close to the actors was truly special and something that I will never forget. The emotions were just out of this world.
This production and this cast completely blew me away. I thought it would be difficult to live up to Uppsala Stadsteaters production, but it totally did. I love both productions equally. It's the same creative team for both productions, but you really can't tell. I was a bit worried they would be too similar, but they're their own productions.
Åsa Fång as Diana was just perfect. I have seen her in many productions and I always love her work. She usually plays other types of roles, so seeing her play Diana was just so interesting. Her performance was just brilliant in every single way. Her voice, her acting, all the little details and the way she used her body to tell the story ( with glances, tremors, facial expressions etc) felt so genuine and real. I felt it to the core.
Rolf Lydahl as Dan is the only cast member that's been in both the Uppsala and the Malmö production. I just love his portayal with all of my heart. I'm telling you, I have never seen an actor look more broken and devasted than him. His acting is so good that it hurts. He spends so much time just sitting on stage in complete despair.... His portrayal is just so heartbreaking and the emotion in his voice is something else.
Kerstin Hilldén as Natalie was truly special. Natalie is a character that is very close to my heart and Kerstin really embodied Natalie. Her presence, emotions, voice and commitment to the role was brilliant to watch. I felt like she really got Natalie. Everything about her portrayal felt so real and alive; body language, facial expressions, her passion.... The dynamics of her performance was perfect. All of Natalies sides and feelings really came through and it moved me to tears several times.
I could go on and on for ages about the cast, but I just love them so watch. They all were so committed to the piece and their roles and their chemistry was out of this world. Their voices sound so incredible together too...
I love the staging and the simple, but very effectful set design. Having it all play out in a small space right at the front of the stage was really clever. It made me feel like I was in the middle of it all. I was so close that it hurt.

This past weekend I saw Malmö Opera's production of Anastasia. I did not know a lot about it beforehand, I hadn't watched a bootleg or listened to the cast recording, so I didn't know what to expect. But I really enjoyed it. It's a beautiful production with great scenography, costuming and choreography. My favourite thing was the wonderful cast, so many talented performers that I'm always happy to see. They really made the story and characters come alive.
Tuva B. Larsen as Anastasia is perfectly cast. She is just stunning in this role, it suits her so well. She held my attention right from the start.
I have to mention my favourite duo Åsa Fång and Michael Jansson as Lily and Vlad. I love it when they play opposite each other. Their chemistry is so amazing and they always work so well together. I loved and enjoyed all their scenes together so much.
Seeing both Philip Jalmelid as Gleb and Daniel Eriksson understudying Gleb was great. I rarely have the chance to see understudies. Philip went all in to his angry Javert mood and Daniel showed a more sensitive side that made me feel more for Gleb.
The one casting choice I'm not too fond of was Andreas Weise as Dmitrij. He wasn't bad, he was just a bit bland and didn't make me feel much at all. His version of 'In a crowd of thousands' was beautiful though. He really got through to me there.
