      the  sound  of  children’s  laughter  isn’t  unfamiliar  to  the  woman  unpacking  in  the  guest  bedroom,  but  it  is  rare  —  growing  up  in  a  house  of  locked  doors  and  empty  bedrooms  made  childhood  lonelier  than  it  ought  to  have  been,  and  many  holidays  did  brooke  spend  alone,  or  in  the  comfort  of  strangers  she  would  rather  forget.  but  these  holidays  are  different,  in  the  same  way  that  hyunjun  has  always  been  different  to  her;  only  now  does  she  understand  what  homes  are  truly  meant  to  be,  what  it  means  to  have  laughter  breathe  life  between  walls.  “it  sounds  like  your  cousins  are  having  fun.”  she  comments,  bright  smile  genuine  (  another  rare  occurrence  —  hyunjun  brings  it  out  in  her,  it  seems  ).  “you  think  they’ll  be  even  happier  when  they  find  out  the  guest  of  honor  has  arrived  ?”
