Visual Diary #13 - Design Leadership - Open Topic - USB lighters - P2
Tumblr media
This is a product I have recently purchased, about a month ago. I had seen it on social media and was intrigued by it so I decided to give it a try. Historically, I would buy lighters and use them until they ran out and threw them out. This lighter is rechargeable through a USB port and powered by lithium-ion batteries which reduces a lot of waste. They also feel safer because there is no open flame out of the lighter. Additionally, there is safety cover to prevent accidents.

Visual Diary #13 - Design Leadership - Open Topic - Fake Tan Spray Mist -P1
Tumblr media
This is a product that I discovered about a year ago and I love it. This spray takes away the messy lotion and mouse that you traditionally use to self-tan, and more importantly, it does not leave any streaks! I’ve also noticed how quickly dries so you can do it at any time of the day and apply your makeup right after. I have only tried one brand but I do know there are a lot of options on the market now, depending on your ingredient preferences and fragrances.

Visual Diary #12 - Design Leadership - Patagonia -P1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Patagonia is an outdoor clothing company that prioritizes sustainability and societal responsibility. Patagonia donates portions of its profit to environmental causes and also prioritizes fair labor practices within the company. As a design leader, I would like to implement similar practices where sustainability and social responsibility are prioritized.

Visual Diary #6 - Design Leadership Tools - Adobe Creative Suite - Tangible Design -P2
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For this poppi graphic that is displayed on the company’s website, I can imagine that Adobe Illustrator was used in the creation of it. Adobe Illustrator allows designers to transform hand-drawn sketches and abstract ideas into clean and vectorized images. I would say that Adobe Illustrator is currently my most used tangible design tool for work, school, and personal projects. It allows me to produce more precise designs and test out iterations.

Visual Diary #6 - Design Leadership Tools - Iterative Design Process - Abstract Design - P1
Tumblr media
This image shows the iterative process that architects use to develop designs for buildings. Model building is just one of the methods used in the iterative process. These prototypes allow clients to give feedback to guide the next iteration. When I was in school I created model iterations for every class and it guided my design process. Currently, I use the iterative process for my graphic design work where I test out new designs and harness feedback from my peers.

Visual Diary #5 - Ethnographic Interview - Post 2
Tumblr media
I found myself observing them as they spoke, something I found interesting was when I asked them about neck pain, they started to crack and roll their necks, it was really interesting. I think it would have been beneficial if I were able to find someone to interview who was an expert in ergonomics or worked in the healthcare field pertaining to neck and back pain.

Visual Diary #5 - Ethnographic Interview - Post 1
Tumblr media
I went into the interviews with an open-ended tone to encourage my friends and family to give more detailed answers, and I made sure to structure the questions to dive deeper into the subject where they were able to take me through their day and how they were feeling. I asked follow-up questions to show my interest in their response and make them feel more comfortable.

Visual Diary #4 - Service Design - Public Accessible Playgrounds
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Public playgrounds designed to accommodate special needs individuals or someone living with a disability focus on creating an inclusive and equitable environment. The design acknowledges accessibility needs by creating an environment where everyone can engage in play on equal terms. In contrast to traditional helping, inclusive playgrounds empower individuals with disabilities by providing an environment that fosters independence, social interaction, and skill development.
This quote from the book stuck out to me, “Through a service relationship, a design is considered successful when the expected-unexpected outcomes serve the right people, for the right purpose, at the right time in the right place” (Page 44). Expected outcomes for the public playgrounds include the following, providing accessible play opportunities, promoting social inclusion, and enhancing physical and cognitive development. Unexpected outcomes that may occur could be breaking down stereotypes and encouraging empathy for all people involved in the creation as well as the users of the playground.

Visual Diary #4 - Service Design - Community Gardens
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Community gardens are designed to serve communities, particularly those who may lack access to fresh and affordable produce. I think community gardens embody the principle of service as a relationship between equals because everyone in the community has the opportunity to participate in the garden, creating a sense of shared responsibility and collaboration.
This quote from the book stuck out to me, “Through a service relationship, a design is considered successful when the expected-unexpected outcomes serve the right people, for the right purpose, at the right time in the right place” (Page 44). Expected outcomes from community gardens include providing access to fresh and healthy produce, promoting community engagement, and addressing food insecurity. Unexpected outcomes could include increasing community bonds, learning gardening skills, and contributing to environmental sustainability

Visual Diary #2 - Wicked Problems: Technology Usage
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How can we encourage individuals to reduce their reliance on personal devices, especially during moments with partners, families, and/or during meals? I am guilty of this wicked problem and notice myself wanting to change my habits. AS technology and phone addictions have increased, I find myself less present during meals, wanting to reach for my phone or thinking about what is going on in the social world. I have found myself needing to create intentional, phone-free times when with my partner to have a more enriching and deeper conversation.

Visual Diary #2 - Wicked Problems: Suburban Transportation
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Lack of public transportation in suburban areas. To me, this is a wicked problem for a few reasons. The first reason is limited mobility for elderly individuals, disabled individuals, and people who don't own a car or cannot afford one. The second reason is the environmental impact our private vehicles have; our vehicles contribute to air pollution and climate change. Next, this problem is not only due to lack of public transportation but simply just living in the suburbs and that is social isolation. I have noticed this for myself in particular since moving back to the suburbs. While I was in the city I would socialize on public transportation, or talk to people in the city center, there is much less community engagement in the suburbs.

IKEA reinvented the furniture/interior industry and how we shop/buy furniture and assemble it.
The in-store experience of IKEA is like no other company; their walkthrough showrooms create a more immersive experience for the customer. The customer locates the product in the warehouse on their own and can purchase a piece of furniture without conversing with anyone.
IKEA is afforable and can be self-assembled.

The zipper on my winter coat keeps me much warmer than the snap buttons. It makes the cold winter months much more bearable.
Zippers enhance children's independence by allowing them to dress themselves.

Not only do zippers improve clothing items, they have the ability to improve outdoor items by making them waterproof.
NASA implemented an airtight zipper for their space suits.
