Many shows have been saved before. I don’t see why it could not be the same for AWAE. We need to fight, get organized, and present a united front. If anyone can think of anything that seems like a great idea to save the show, please say it!

An Open Letter to the Anne with an E Fandom: DO NOT GIVE UP YET

For those yet to hear, AWAE got canceled this morning. However, Hope is not yet lost. We can save it. We did it with B99, we did it with ODAAT, we can do it with AWAE.

May 2018: Fox cancelled its hit show Brooklyn Nine-Nine after its fifth season. 31 hours later, NBC picked it up.

February 2018: Netflix cancelled its hit show One Day At A Time after its third season. Four months later, it was saved by PopTV.

November 2019: Netflix cancels Anne With an E. Now we have to save it.

First, let’s take a look at Why This Happened.

Netflix has a habit of cancelling some of its bestsellers after their second or third season. It boils down to a couple things: new subscribers and the revenue they bring. Statistically, the first season of a new show will bring in more new subscribers than the third or fourth installment of another show. Plus, after 2-3 years, actors and crew tend to try and negotiate a pay raise. It doesn’t matter how popular the show is, if they think they can make more money by starting a new series, the old one dies. Of course they have their cash cows, like Stranger Things or Thirteen Reasons Why, and will continue those shows as long as they can squeeze money out of it. But that’s not important right now.

Here’s what we do. B99 was saved in 31 hours, but they were owned by Fox. Netflix is a little different. Doesn’t matter that they cut the show and don’t care anymore, it’s going to be tough to get them to release the rights. But as long as we keep fighting, we can do this. It took four months to save ODAAT, so don’t stop fighting if it takes just as long or longer.

ODAAT gained support for telling an important story (what it’s like living in America as a Latino family, the story of a single mother struggling with PTSD, anxiety, depression, and another story of struggling with addiction) and was saved via those storylines. Namely: the unfinished business regarding Schneider’s addiction.

We have an important and unfinished storyline too: Ka’kwet and that school. Netflix is going to get a lot of bad press for cancelling without at least wrapping up her story. Use that.

I’m American. I haven’t seen the third season yet. But I did see you all cling to hope via a pen, a shell, and a gossipy little girl. I felt you cry over a little Mi'kmaq girl and he pain and injustice she and her family faced. I watched your edits, your theories, your fire, your passion.

So get out there, get the tags trending, get loud, and get angry. See you on the other side of the war.

Are you kidding me.. just watched the season finale of awae and I went into the tag to see everyone be excited about it only to find out the show got cancelled by netflix. Like, this gif has never been more accurate

Can we also talk about how One Day at a Time specifically mentioned the terms/identities: gender non-conforming, nonbinary, genderqueer and genderneutral, had two characters who use gender neutral pronouns (one using singular they and the other using the neopronoun ze/zhir) and that the jokes made about it was about how oblivious/out of touch older people can be not about these characters identities or pronouns, that the pronouns of these characters where respected and uses by all characters on the show and that after having pronouns and gender nonconforming/nonbinary identities explained in a very brief and simple manner not even the old-fashioned Catholic grandmother questioned or made jokes about these characters, identities or pronouns and respected them all immediately, and then one of those nb characters, a nonbinary gay girl named Syd who uses they/them pronouns, becomes the girlfriend of one of the main characters who is a lesbian becoming one of the only nb wlw/nblw couples on tv in history.

Like I almost cried several times while binging season two of One Day at a Time because Ive never experienced this much nb representation and the respect it was shown and treated with was just so beautiful. And this is on a show that already deals with so many important issues like racism, immigration, addiction recovery, depression, PTSD, veterans issues, single motherhood, religion and so much more, and to see them take the representation and respect of nonbinary people and identities as one of those important issues that needa addressing showed me that they see nonbinary issues as just as real and important as other social justice issues and that just means So Much to me because I’ve hardly ever seen that before and never on a show made by such a huge distributor like Netflix. This is a huge deal and a big milestone for the nb community and Im honestly just so happy!!!

10 Things I Want From ODAAT Season 4 That All Include The One, The Only, PAPITO (a.k.a. Alex Alverez), All of Which I Know We Probably Won't Get

Alex having an episode about his semi-homophobic friends calling him gay for painting his nails and all that, and him discovering what bisexuality is but by the end of the episode deciding that he definitely is straight ( + his anxiety could show up in this episode and Schneider could come out as bi).

To add on to that, Alex having an anxiety attack and Elena (yes, specifically Elena) helping him out. I just want to see more of Alex and Elena supporting each other.

Alex dating a non-latinx POC trans girl to help normalize non-LGBT+ people dating trans people (it's very uncommon in media tbh) and to normalize non white-POC interracial relationships. And I want her to show up on screen.

Maybe Alex's girlfriend could be sex neutral/sex repulsed a-spec and they could have another sex ed episode, but this one will be centered around Alex and her, because we already have the original sex ed episode and the one centered around Elena and Syd, so... I'm just saying.

More of Alex and Syd's friendship. For some reason when I was thinking of what they could do together, I thought of paintball, so maybe a double date scene where Elena and Alex's previously mentioned girlfriend go against Alex and Syd in a game of paintball? Or bowling. Or mini-golf. Doesn't really matter what they do, I just want a scene like this.

Alex going to AA meetings with Schneider because one week Schneider just really wants to go and Alex convinces him to go by saying he'll go with him.

Alex crying on screen. Possibly during an anxiety attack, does not really matter to me. I just think that if someone could normalize the fact that men do cry, it would be Alex Alverez.

Alex going to a party and getting a bit anxious because his friends keep on drinking and vaping around him and telling him he's a baby or a prude or an [insert insult and/or slur here] because he won't drink/vape with them and him calling Elena to please come get him and Elena and Schneider (because 25 and older person in the car rule) come to get him and he keeps apologizing to Schneider for smelling like alchohol and drugs and then cut to a scene where Alex is talking to his mom about it and her being mad because he went to a party without her permission but glad that he left without doing anything. Bonus points if his girlfriend is also in the episode.

More of Alex cooking tbh. Maybe he can get a job at a local latinx restaurant. Maybe the restaurant could be a little hole in the wall place owned by Lydia. Which she start up during the season. Or it could be owned by one of their more local cousins. Idk, these are just ideas.

Alex deciding it's time to get better friends and stop caring about popularity. But still caring about hair and fashion and nice shoes and everything else Alex likes.
