so i study decolonization, as in i studied it as part of my degree, and i thought I'd make a list of some readings/films that might offer additional insight about decolonization (it also helps if you're tired of the christian moralistic thinking)
occupation 101 (can be found on youtube i believe, it's about the history between isreal and palestine, it focuses on palestinians and it is quite comprehensive. there's live footage, there's interviews with palestinian children, etc. it's a must watch i think, regarding palestine. it points the finger squarely at the united states.)
the wretched of the earth, franz fanon. fanon is really well known in the decolonization sphere because he writes about it in a very succinct and clear way. to him, decolonization can never occur peacefully, and i think that's a really important key lesson. he also talks about how colonizers don't just take land, they reframe ideas, they take language, art, thoughts.
the battle of algiers, 1966. this is a fascinating film, it's sort of a documentary, they got the actual people to play their parts. it describes and interviews the main individuals involved in the fight for independence within Algiers. i think understanding how a nation can gain independence over its colonial forces is really important in the grand scheme of decolonialism.
unthinking eurocentrism. if you can get your hands on it, i love this text. it's so poignant and it lays everything out so clearly and it really shows how we center our worlds around eurocentrism and westernism.
this good friday, i think of palestine. i think how the symbol of christianity, the cross, was the method of execution used by the romans for those who were not considered citizens of the roman empire. jesus, a man born and lived in the land called palestine, the land called judaea, who knew the wood of its trees and the dust of its fields, the taste of its water, its bitter herbs, its wine and grapes, its olive oil, was killed as someone who was not granted full citizenship in his own land by the violent colonizers who occupied it. he was killed by them for the audacity to envision a better world. the legacy of easter is the cry of the oppressed and the stateless. tonight i pray not for new life in christ but for the new life of a free palestine.
Showing off more of the reverse bear trap my friend helped me make, she did an amazing job. When I'm not using it for cosplay I keep it on my shelf because it's such a cool prop.
I hate when an artist gets exposed for being a bad person and people start the narrative “why would you even want to listen to their shitty music” when are we going to be freed from the idea that only good people create good art and bad people create bad art. It just makes it harder for these types of people to be exposed because now you got people thinking “how is this possible, his music is so good!”
This women’s history month, remember those in Gaza who don’t have feminine hygiene products for their periods. Remember the pregnant mothers who got ran over by IDF tanks. Remember the women who have been killed and displaced, & IDF soldiers humiliate them further by brandishing their undergarments in posts and pictures.
Remember the women in Palestine this Women’s History Month.
