Matt's interview also seems to be causing a bit of drama in the fandom because of the whole "Marcy sees Anne as a bit below her level" thing, guess some people really want her to just be a pure cinamon roll
I don't think Marcy views Anne as inferior or anything, but yeah, Marcy isn't some squeaky clean angel. She views Sasha as more of an intellectual equal than Anne. They're both logical people, while Anne is more emotional, and Marcy doesn't really appreciate how valuable Anne's heart is compared to Sasha's strength or Marcy's own intelligence. I think season 3 will involve Sasha and Marcy both learning to appreciate Anne more for who she is. They love her and care about her, but they need to respect her more. She's the heart of the trio after all, and they take that for granted.

I just want to preface this by saying that I'm not interested in starting discourse about this topic or making it in any way shipping related. I don't want to put words in Matt’s mouth, either. I just want to offer my interpretation of this interview because I think it's a very interesting look into the dynamics of these three girls.
----
Sasha and Marcy are initially stagnant characters. They are flawed, yes, but without Anne their flaws would go completely unnoticed. In this sense, Sasha and Marcy are equals. They each know what the other is about, and they stay in their lane. Sasha is strong, and Marcy is intelligent. It's deceptively simple, and they are confident in who they're meant to be.
On the other hand, Anne is the heart, and the needs of the heart are complicated. Anne is a wild card. She is still growing, still finding herself. She still has lessons to learn. Sasha and Marcy can't relate to this. They are leaders, not followers, and they don't need morals to guide them and complicate things. As described, Sasha is immoral, and Marcy is amoral. Anne’s morality drags them both out of their comfort zone, and she ends up being the main reason these characters are finally forced to grow.
Just because Sasha and Marcy view Anne as being on a different wavelength to them does not mean they don't care about her. Quite the opposite, actually. They value her as a friend, which is explicitly shown in their interactions with Anne. Sasha goes to every extreme to convince Anne to join her side and come home. Marcy is overjoyed to reunite with Anne again. They love Anne and they love their friendship with her, though their rules of friendship are morally ambiguous at best. It's not perfect, but they at the very least care about Anne.
Despite this, their character flaws prevent them from valuing her as a moral character, leading to them treating her differently to how they would treat each other. Sasha manipulates Anne because she knows she can. She knows Anne is a follower, and unsure of herself. Marcy doesn’t shield Anne from this because she doesn't view interrupting Anne’s morals as a big deal. We see them both receive their rude awakenings about Anne in the first two seasons, realizing that she is not simply the yes-man they relegated her to be. Her ability to find herself raises her to their level of confidence and self-assuredness, and this knocks both of them down a peg. Suddenly, Sasha and Marcy are the ones who have to find themselves.
Another aspect of this I want to point out are the situations in which each of the girls display empathy:
Marcy: Physical/Intellectual
Sasha: Social
Anne: Emotional/Universal
Marcy
Marcy’s empathy is influenced by physical and/or intellectual factors.
In The First Temple, the threat of Anne and the Plantars being destroyed ultimately brings Marcy to her senses.
In New Wartwood, the consequence of sinking the town leads to Marcy realizing her flawed logic.
In True Colors, Anne physically and emotionally withdraws from Marcy. The ultimate consequence for her is being stabbed by Andrias.
These miscalculations are tangible, and lead Marcy to reevaluating her situation. It appears to be the most effective way for her to learn her lessons.
Sasha
Sasha’s empathy is motivated by social factors.
In the Third Temple, Sasha has doubts about her ability to uphold her social status as the leader, the protector, the strongman of their friend group.
In Battle of the Bands, Sasha risks losing her social circle for her desire to be in charge of everything and her unwillingness to accept Anne’s new social standing.
In Reunion, Sasha sacrifices herself because she feels her social standing with Anne has changed to the point where their friendship is now irredeemable.
Sasha only learns effectively when the solution directly benefits her. Her motivations are unclear to the audience because they are equally unclear to Sasha herself.
Anne
Anne is empathetic to a fault, regardless of consequences. You probably don't need any proof for Anne’s case, but I'm going to provide some key examples that I think show the most contrast to Sasha and Marcy’s motivations.
In Scavenger Hunt, Anne didn't make friends because she thought it would benefit her later. She simply listened and showed genuine care for others because that is the type of person she has grown to be.
In the Second Temple, Anne goes out of her way to do what she feels is right, not what she feels is required of her.
Anne shows consistent growth and development throughout the series and many of her emotional moments are directly related to her caring about someone.
The bottom line is, Sasha and Marcy are fundamentally different compared to Anne. They are a lot more similar to each other than I think a lot of us realized. They are broken, and they didn't even realize it until Anne became whole. If Anne's innate ability to grow and understand and love without boundaries went unappreciated by them before, it is bound to become an inspiration for them now.
Guys, this is good content. This is excellent content. It makes the dynamics of these characters so much more interesting and their growth so much more valuable. I can't wait to see where they take us in season 3!

Marcy’s Flaw
I admit it, I’m not the best at empathizing with characters like Marcy. Time and time again, her motives have evaded my grasp, and I’ve been unable to figure out what exactly her flaw is.
Until now.
Marcy is a peacemaker. But it’s more than that.
Namely I’m talking about this scene. The one where Anne and Sasha are fighting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
They both have valid points. For Anne, she’s protecting her frog family, who was nearly killed a while ago. For Sasha, she’s trying to fit in with Anne oncemore.
And what about Marcy? What does she think about the fight? What does she want right there?
Tumblr media
The answer? We don’t know. She isn’t going to let that slip, she isn’t even going to consider her own feelings. Because right now, Marcy’s priority is one thing: to stop the fight at all costs.
And the thing is, it makes sense. Because that’s what Marcy has always been, is the peacemaker. I mean, we can see it already: she takes Sasha’s feelings into account, but also always seems to know everything that Anne felt as well.
Tumblr media
That’s because Marcy is the best friend for both of them. She’s the shoulder that Anne cries on, and the ear that Sasha vents to. Even if it’s not her fight, she’s still vastly impacted by both sides.
The thing is, you can see that in her group dynamic personality. Sure, she was fine and it was fun…but geez, she didn’t really bring anything of her own to that discussion. She literally has this massive conflict about her proposal, and Anne and Sasha didn’t even notice how weird she was acting. And what happened to the fun little infodumper who had everything to say?
Marcy wasn’t being bullied by Sasha, per se. But when she’s in that group, she changes her personality. She makes it so she’s only reacting: saying the things that will make Anne and Sasha laugh, never once bringing up anything bad. She always agrees with everything, even if it’s contradictory.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And she’s never going to pick a side.
Picking a side means alienating a friend. Picking a side means that the loser is going to be mad at her. Picking a side means that Anne and Sasha will fight, and Sasha will leave, and Marcy will be stuck with absolutely no choice of who her friends are.
With Anne, she’s Marcy Wu. But with Anne and Sasha, she’s the awkward comic relief, desperately trying to fit in with a group that she’s convinced doesn’t care about her.
(But here’s the thing. If Marcy brought up her problems, they would.)
Finally, I’ll end this by pointing out that Marcy and Sasha are perfect foils. Marcy fears being non-genuine and pretending to be someone else in order to please people, sure. But she fears losing her friends more. So she’ll put on a front and be the perfect agreeable Marcy, in order to keep her friends. Sasha’s the opposite, where she’d rather ditch her friends than be wrong.
Since moving in with the Plantars, Anne has become a happy medium. She has learned when to stick to her instinct and when to listen to others. Marcy and Sasha both have things to learn from her. Good thing they’ll have an entire season to figure it out.

in ep 11, catra is the one to say “why do you always have to sacrifice everything for everyone else? when do you get to choose?
what do you want, adora?”
OKAY dudes look: in the end, CATRA HAD FINALLY REALIZED THAT ADORA NEVER CHOSE THIS PATH OVER HER. she realized adora is filled to the brim with a sense of justice & destiny & the greater good - it leaves almost no room for a heart or a choice in anything. once adora became she-ra, she wasn’t just catra’s anymore. having adora become someone else’s - everyone else’s - is what left catra buried in pain & fire & brimstone this whole time.
but catra thought that adora had chosen that path. she thought adora had a choice in all this & when she realizes she doesn’t….hoo boy. it’s not anger. it’s sadness.
the fact that adora never got to choose for herself is sobering for her, but realizing that with the failsafe, she never will? it breaks catra’s heart all over again. she thinks - no, she knows catra herself could never hold a candle to the destiny that is she-ra.
but *pops bottle* LITTLE DOES SHE KNOW. SHE IS PART OF THE DESTINY OF SHE-RA. BECAUSE SHE-RA IS LOVE & MAGIC & the clearest adora ever feels these things is when she embraces her love for catra.
once catra sees that the fate of etheria & the universe is in adora’s very human hands, she fully realizes that they do not have the luxury of choice. that’s why she’s finally unafraid of admitting that she loves her. there is no rejection & or need for reciprocity - all she wants is for adora to know that she loves her.
and when adora comes back to her, opens her eyes, says it back,,…,..,
that choice. CHOOSING her emotions - not over her responsibilities & destiny - but alongside them?? that is what clears the path for the true magic. all that interference was from trying to push her feelings down, from trying to be so selfless that there is no self left. she thought she had to be more like she-ra to harness her power, but she becomes her strongest when she is at her most human.
i’m gonna go lie down for a few days now no one touch me

— “I think it was at this point that Katra realized what Adora meant to her. She understood… Adora was the person she’d missed… more than anything”
I really liked the moments where Adora with Katra as a child. They’re so cute.
// I tried to draw on a graphic tablet and it turned out to be much more difficult than on paper. But I’m happy with the result. Maybe soon I will do in color //
