When she was so graciously offered to live in her aunt’s vacation penthouse close to her university of choice, the only catch was that she had to pay some of the bills. Completely fair, because it was a kind enough gesture to give away a freshly furnished space to a niece you barely talked to. Luckily, there was enough room for another guest, enough to split the rent.

So in comes the savior of her life, brother from another mother, Joshua Hong, decked out in sandy beige Sperry’s and ironed white jeans. Fresh from South California, he wore their sunshine on his smile, and their attitude in his Cheshire eyes. He was attending the same university as well, and was conveniently looking for a means to stay. Needless to say, she pounced on him at orientation before he could ask anyone else.

Hansol Vernon Chwe, she tried to unsuccessfully convince herself, meant nothing to her.

Not when he walked into 18th Century Children’s Literature every Monday and Wednesday, looking like the dead bird her pet cat dragged in when she was three. His ebony strands would stick out like dead twigs, usually muffled by a worn navy baseball cap with the lid twirled behind his neck. He never made a fuss when he entered a minute before the class would start, rushing to the nearest empty desk with his head down, lost in thought. Even though it was an afternoon class, he still managed to look like he walked right out of bed and into lecture.

He meant nothing to her, when he seldom spoke in their seminar, tucked away in the back scribbling notes. Especially not when he’d pipe up for class participation every other blue moon, speaking with sudden austerity about how the English language is so convoluted, his voice strangely comparable to the thickness of raw honey.

The first time was Begin Again.

He was just fed up. Fed up with his perpetual writer’s block, fed up with how behind he was in education, and all over just wishing for some peace. Vernon missed sleep. He longed for how easy it was back in middle school to fall asleep, to collapse on his bunk and have a full eight hours to happily ponder over absolutely nothing. Now, whenever he did get around to sleeping, he was stuck in a purgatory of being infinitely restless. He felt nervous whenever he closed his eyes, thinking about what kind of packed schedule he’d face in a couple hours’ time, or that he could be spending this time perfecting his lyrics.

But the movies helped.

It was sometime around the end of winter that this whole thing started. Some random neighbor waiting for the elevator to open, who had about two or so boxes stacked so high he couldn’t see her face. When the elevator just didn’t want to help her out, she wedged her sneaker between the emergency exit to the stairwell.
