HAPPY BIRTHDAY LE CORBUSIER!
Born in North Western Switzerland, the architect, designer, urban planner, painter and writer Charles -Edouard Jeanneret-Gris became known as and assumed the name Le Corbusier - referred today by some architects as ‘Corb’.
Even though he lacked formal training, he was a pioneer of modern architecture, and a controversial urban planner.
Le Corbusier moved permanently to Paris in 1917, where he met the cubist painter Amedee Ozenfant, and together they developed a new artistic movement called ‘Purism’.
This 1953 print is Plate 17 from the series ‘Unite’.

LIFESTYLE EVOLUTION
We always include renderings in our design process to develop the aesthetic and present our ideas to our clients.
We transformed an underused ocean front Guest Room in a Shingle Style manse into a now much-loved Lounge. The Lounge is replete with a full bar, comfortable seating, an 84” television, and access to a large deck with steps to the beach.
Our homes need not remain static and unchanged, rather our homes can evolve as our lives and lifestyles change.
This makeover was a game changer for my clients who couldn’t be happier with the transformation.

MORNING LIGHT - MORNING VIEW
When I moved to Brooklyn Heights ten years ago the apartment had a lovely albeit barren terrace off of the upstairs sitting room adjacent to my bedroom - this is the view from my bed.
Originally I had provided lots of seating with fewer plants, but overtime the plants grew, more and then more were added, and I moved the seating to Connecticut.
Three trees and a bunch of other plants grow in Brooklyn…
This is a glorious way to start the day!

KEEP IT SIMPLE
Sometimes restraint is the best option!
As part of a massive renovation we created this simple Breakfast Room with windows on three sides to be the perfect spot to start the day. We kept the furnishings historic and extremely simple, almost Shaker, to avoid competing with the setting and the view.
The magnificent property slopes down to Kirby Pond with extended views over the Long Island Sound, and if that isn’t enough, there are two white swans that live in the pond!
How do you take your coffee?

OUTBUILDING REVIVAL
This simple structure was originally built around 1940 as the studio for American artist David Hare.
At this very rich time in his career Hare was creating mixed media surrealist sculptures, some in plaster and others in steel and wire, and interfacing with some of the most influential artists of the day.
In addition to making art and exhibiting his work at Peggy Guggenheim’s now legendary’Art of this Century’ gallery, David Hare was the editor of ‘VVV’ - a surrealist magazine with three primary contributors - Andre Breton, Marcel Duchamp and Max Ernst. In addition his cousin artist Kay Sage and her Husband Yves Tanguy lived and worked nearby. And no doubt, his friend and neighbor, Alexander Calder had an impact on him too.
In 1945, Hare loaned his house to Arshille Gorky and his family for nine months when he used the Studio for painting.
Some years later an illustrator named Bobb Kuhn and his family purchased the property. He used the studio for his illustrations of animals in nature for Field and Stream magazine and others for forty years.
When I first saw this property, this structure had become a wood shop, and then a storage building, increasingly engulfed by the adjacent forest.
With the assistance of @moranhookarchitecture I added many new windows, added a new roof and new board and batten siding.
I now call the building the ‘Pleasure Pavilion’ or ‘The Studio’, and have hosted lunches, dinners and cocktails here. With the addition of dumbbells, a bench and other accoutrements I use it for exercise, and yoga.
However, the transformation is not yet complete; as resources allow, I will be adding a large pergola, insulating the structure, adding interior wood cladding, a kitchenette, a bathroom, a sleeping/work loft, and heat to make it a building with expanded functionality for year-round use recognizing its illustrious past.

HOUSE ON A POND
There are many lovely rooms in this house, however, the Breakfast Room has it all. The room has windows on three sides that take advantage of the morning light, taking advantage of the views to Kirby Pond, with its pair of resident swans!
The ‘new old house’ suits these empty nesters, with a gracious Entry, main floor Primary Bedroom, His and Her Baths gracious Living Room, well considered Kitchen, and a charming but dramatic Dining Room for special occasions.

I have a five year degree in Architecture combined with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from RISD.
I am not a licensed architect but have orchestrated numerous new builds, and countless renovations, and have a passion for decorative arts through history.
We select and design furniture cabinetry, light fixtures, area rugs, we use trims, design curtains and other windows treatments, select textiles, furniture, lamps, lampshades, door knobs, artwork, and accessories.
And while we ‘Architect’ and ‘Decorate’, I call myself an Interior Designer.
