THE SWEETEST SOUND ... THE DISCOGRAPHY OF SUG★R
Tumblr media
debuting in 2016 with the album GIRL TO GIRL under Infinite Stage Entertainment, SUG★R is the group credited with the revival of the company, as they are the first ISE group that managed to break through and become a true success.
closely after this successful debut, SUG★R released their first mini album, SELFISH, in early 2017. this album continued their central concept of confidence and girl power, but added a bit more edge to their sound. title track As If It's Your Last topped international charts for nearly four weeks, and helped to make the group become known to western audiences. they released mini album ACT UP only four months later, with title track Go Hard helping the girls win their first ever music show award only a year after their debut.
ISE seemed determined to keep the girls busy, as only a few weeks after the release of this ep the group began the asia leg of what would later become their international SO SWEET tour. two months and ten tour dates later, the group began working on mini album Sixth Sense, which released at the end of 2018. the title track of this mini album received four music show awards, and the album sold over 200,000 copies in the pre-order phase alone. Sixth Sense was remarkably different from the group's prior releases, having a lighter pop sound. while fans clearly enjoyed the tracks, many netizens expressed a hope that SUG★R would return to their original sound in their next comeback.
with the completion of the Sixth Sense promotional period came the start of the north american leg of the SO SWEET tour, marking SUG★R as the first group under ISE to tour internationally. during this tour, during this tour in north america, the group also released their first ep, Lovesick Girls. the album was the first under ISE to be produced by american producers, and received mixed reviews from korean fans. though it sold nearly two thousand albums within the first week of sales, and became a fan-favorite.
in mid-2019 the group returned to korea to work on their second full album, UNAPOLOGETIC. around this time, fans became worried that the girls were being exploited by the company, seemingly not having had any downtime between their debut and the release of the album. still, it became one of SUG★Rs best-selling releases, with the album currently having over 3 million sales internationally. UNAPOLOGETIC was seen as being perfect for SUG★Rs concept, with strong messages of female empowerment in title tracks Iconic and My Satisfaction. during this era, a SO SWEET tour movie was released, as well as a series of unplugged recordings of SUG★Rs biggest hits that were posted to youtube.
in 2020 the group released an ep and a mini album back to back, with ep BAD/GOOD releasing four months after UNAPOLOGETIC, and mini album i TO i being released in the fall of that same year. both comebacks had a remarkably darker sound, and the promotional periods were criticized for the fact that the girls looked noticeably exhausted and irritable. after a seven-week promotional period for BAD/GOOD, the company announced that SUG★R would go on a hiatus for an indeterminate amount of time.
in 2023, after many fans had already accepted that SUG★R was likely to disband, the group had a comeback with album (DON'T) CALL ME. title track HIP became the most successful song of the year, winning 15 music show awards, making it the most popular song ever released under the company. the album has several memorable tracks, with Karma and Paint The Town especially becoming fan favorites. the album sold close to 4 million copies, and is SUG★Rs most popular release to date.
later that same year, the company underwent some major changes, with SUG★R again entering a minor hiatus as leader Hyejin became involved in a lawsuit against former ISE ceo Cho Hosung. during the spring of 2024, SUG★R finally had another comeback. Better Things is much more stripped down and sweet, and even the members themselves acknowledged that this was a deviation from their normal sound. the group did a promotional period for title track Better Things, and soon after also did a shorter promotional period for Life's Too Short. during the promotion for the album, the group had several pop-up cafes around korea in collaboration with angel-in-us coffee, releasing their own limited drinks to be sold at all angel-in-us coffee houses. this contributed to album sales, selling over 700,000 copies just within the first three weeks of release.

Tumblr media
She can feel her hands shaking. Her hands haven’t stopped shaking since the company Christmas party. The party where Hosung approached her, already half-drunk, and told her that they shouldn’t be seeing each other anymore. While still trying to kiss her. The thing he said, the things he’d threatened her with, had not stopped echoing around in her head. She feared they might never stop.
Things were supposed to be over. Hosung broke things off, which means she should have been free from constantly feeling like she was trapped under the weight of him every second of every day. She still couldn’t breathe from the pressure of him, waiting around every corner. Her career was on the line, her debut was on the line, the debut of her members.
For years, she’d been the company’s golden girl, the one trainee special enough to be that close to the CEO. If she wasn’t… that anymore, what even was she?
“Hye, you okay?”
Sohee’s voice is like a knife right through the noose of anxiety around Hyejin’s neck.
“Yeah, all good,” she says, because there’s not much else she can say.
The atmosphere in the practice room is plain poisonous, and all girls can feel it. All except Hyori, maybe, who’s been too preoccupied with working out a way of sneaking away from the strict eye of their manager so she can go on a date next week.
Hyejin’s happy for her—all of them are happy for her—and she can’t help but feel even worse for the fact that she’s a black hole that’s sucking every bit of happiness out of the training room.
“Let’s go for a break, yeah?” Sohee offers. Jina and Hyori understand a hint that Hyejin completely misses, ignoring the choreographer’s protests and whisking the woman out of the room along with them. Before she knows it, Hyejin is sitting on the floor of the practice room with Sohee folding herself into a seating position in front of her. The room is so quiet that she can hear the buzzing of the halogen lights above them. She feels a little askew all of the sudden, as if at any moment the world might tip over so Hyejjn will fall off.
"What's going on with you?" Sohee asks, and Hyejin is crying before Sohee can finish the sentence.
Nothing is wrong. Everything is wrong. Can both of those be true at the same time? Hyejin starts wringing her wrists like she's trying to squeeze the bad feelings out of herself and Sohee takes Hyejin's hands away, holding them in her own.
Hyejin manages to look up, Sohee's face blurry through a layer of heavy tears. "You don't have to explain it to me," Sohee says, quietly, gently pulling on Hyejin's hands. "But I want to help."
Hyejin hiccups out another sob, nodding her head. "I want to, I want to," she says, attempting to steady her voice. But I'm scared, goes unsaid. She is. Terrified. What kind of leader will she be after this? Will Sohee even respect her still?
"I know you," Sohee reassures, "I know you like I know my own heart, Jinnie. Better even, maybe." She tugs onto Hyejin's hands again, smiling weakly. She means it. Hyejin knows Sohee, too, and suddenly she's embarrassed for ever thinking she couldn't trust her. The two of them hardly needed words between them, after years of being roommates, friends, something more that Hyejin can't even put a name to.
"You have me, always," Sohee agrees to what she knows Hyejin is thinking, to what they know is the truth.
"It started before you even knew me," Hyejin starts, and then suddenly she can't stop. Words begin leaking out of her in a steady, unstoppable stream. She stops crying somewhere along the way, growing angry instead as she recounts the times that their CEO coerced and took advantage of her. How he threatened her into silence. How he was still threatening her into silence now.
All the while Sohee held her, face schooled into something calm but almost unreadable. She was angry, Hyejin could tell simply by the small wrinkle between her eyebrows, but she didn't mean to show it.
When she finally ran out of words, Hyejin felt like she might never talk again.
"I'm sorry," Sohee finally says. She stays quiet for another moment, takes a deep breath, and pulls herself into Hyejin. Her arms wrap around Hyejin's waist while her head finds a resting place in the crook of Hyejin's neck, and they sit like that for a long while. A little tangled ball of twine, clearly unwilling to unravel.
"I'm sorry," Sohee says again, whispering against the edge of Hyejin's jaw. It tickles up the side of her face, and she can't help but smile slightly.
Hyejin lifts her hand to press it into the back of Sohee's head, fingers tangling lightly with her long dark hair. In a few weeks a stylist will cut it to above her shoulders, just in time for their debut, but for now it's still long enough for Hyori to practice braiding when she wants to, and for right now, when Hyejin wants to card her fingers through it in long, soft strokes.
"I'm sorry I didn't tell you."
"Don't." Sohee shakes her head. "You don't need to feel sorry for that. I understand."
Sohee always understands. Hyejin thinks nobody will ever understand her the way Sohee does. She doesn't think she wants anyone to understand her like Sohee does.
“I’m all apart.” Another sob shakes Hyejin. “I don’t know what to do now, I don’t know what’s left of me.”
“You’re what’s left,” Sohee responds instantly. Her fingers run gentle circles on Hyejin’s back, soothing her like a little kid. “You’re that’s left. You, Hyejinnie. You’re our leader, my friend, my…” Sohee pauses, takes a deep breath. “You’re you, still, and that’s all you need to be. It’s enough.”
That’s it. No question about it. Hyejin is what’s left, and it’s enough.
When Hyejin turns to look at Sohee's face, she finds Sohee's deep brown eyes already looking back at her. Expecting her, as always.
Sohee knows Hyejin completely, and Hyejin knows Sohee the same. When Hyejin leans in to kiss Sohee, her face is already there.
For a moment Hyejin startles with fear, the same way she has every single time she's thought about this moment, but Sohee doesn't let her. She reaches a hand up to cradle Hyejin's face, pulling her closer, kissing her bottom lip softly before pressing in harder. I'm here, I want this. The thought echoes between the two of them as they kiss, tangling into each other even further until they become a knot that can never be untied.
"I…" Heyjin says in an exhale when they break apart, only slightly, forehead still resting against Sohee's. The words freeze in her mouth, afraid to come out, but they don't need to.
"I know," Sohee says, pressing a kiss to the tip of Hyejin's nose. "I do, too." And nothing else needs to be said.

Tumblr media
Hyejin's been at ISE too long to ignore her own suspicions. Over the past nine years she's developed a keen sense of awareness when it comes to the actions and emotions of the people around her.
A necessary survival skill, probably, when you're secretly hooking up with your married boss.
Hyejin doesn't like the term hooking up. It makes it sound like she's interested in Cho Hosung, which she's absolutely not. But he's lonely, and he hates his wife, and he holds Hyejin's entire existence in the palm of his hand, so when he asks her to meet him in his office she knows there's not much of a choice there.
This time it's not Hosung, though. It's his wife Han Sooyin, and she's in Hosung's office instead of her own, and Hyejin knows she's fucked. Sooyin caught them, somehow, and everything Hyejin has been working towards is about to be pulled out from right under her. It's with these thoughts that she settles down into the chair on the opposite side of the desk, a chair that's both wholly familiar and unfamiliar to her all at once. Familiar, because she was sitting in this exact chair the first time Hosung tried to kiss her. Unfamiliar, because it feels different now that she's about to be fired in it.
She can't move back home. Her parents won't have her. Will another company want her as a trainee? If not, she's as good as dead.
"Hyejin-ah," Sooyin sighs, with all the grim dramatics of an executioner holding the ax high in the air. "I called you here because I wanted to talk."
Hyejin doesn't even breathe.
"It's embarrassing to admit, truly, however… you've been with us for so long, I feel I can trust you. More than most of our other employees." Hyejin isn't an employee—not until she makes them any money, at least—but she doesn't see any use in correcting Sooyin. "My work keeps me incredibly busy, and it also causes me to not have much time for… social contacts. My husband and I both suffer from this, you see. We've become lonely beings, over the years."
Hyejin knows. More than most. She wishes Sooyin would just swing the ax already. Cut her head clean off, get it over with.
"The girls here, they admire you. You're a true big sister to all of them. I see that, just as much as I see your dedication here." The office, for all of its high ceilings and glass walls, feels like it's closing in on Hyejin. With every word Sooyin speaks, Hyejin feels like a little more oxygen is sucked out of the room. "You're admirably poised and mature, and I feel I can trust you with certain things. Things that require… discretion."
For a moment, Hyejin doubts herself. It certainly didn't sound like Sooyin was about to fire Hyejin for sleeping with her husband, but what else could she be talking about?
"The other trainees, they trust you as well," Sooyin keeps talking, completely unaware of the turmoil stirring within Hyejin. "I feel they might tell you things they keep hidden from most other people."
Hyejin thinks of Hyori and her secret phone that she uses to text a trainee from another company she has a crush on, and Jina's secret snack stash she keeps hidden under a laundry pile. She thinks of Evelyn, who's only been a trainee for a little over two weeks and already admitted to Hyejin that she's found a way to sneak out of her dorm past curfew. She thinks of Dae, coming up to her last week with tears in her eyes to confess that he can't stop thinking about Hyunwoo, in a way he doesn't think he should.
“Sometimes they do,” Hyejin agrees. It seems like that’s the answer Sooyin was hoping for, if the smile that twitches at the corner of her mouth is anything to go by. She doesn’t give away a thing, however, only folding her hands in her lap and leaning forward a bit more.
“I admire a lot of things about you, Hyejin. Mostly, I believe that you’re the kind of person who knows when she should do the right thing.” Sooyin leans even closer. Hyejin has never been less sure of her own judgment before, suddenly doubting that this conversation has anything to do with Hosung at all. “I think we could be friends. I’d like us to be friends. But… if we are going to be friends, I need complete honesty from you.”
Hyejin would rather eat glass than be friends with Sooyin. Still, she nods. Her relationship with Hosung isn’t all that different from the one she has with Sooyin—save for the physical contact. Sooyin just as well holds the ability to ruin Hyejin’s entire existence with nothing but a wave of her hand.
“There’s no… easy way to say this,” Sooyin says with a sigh, hanging her head slightly before looking back at Hyejin. “I fear my husband’s been unfaithful recently.”
well, shit.
Hyejin sits frozen in her seat, refusing to give Sooyin any sort of reaction. It seems successful enough, with Sooyin simply sighing before she continues to speak. “It’s embarrassing to admit, truly. It was hard to admit even to myself, but it’s true.”
“Do you… do you know with—”
“—who he’s been sleeping with?” Sooyin finishes the sentence crudely, clearly having no time for Hyejin’s stumbling. “No. That’s why I need you.”
Hyejin doesn’t speak. She’s trying to process everything—or even anything—but her brain is having a hard time catching up. She wants to be relieved for the fact that she hasn’t been caught, but her mind is stuck on the implication of Sooyin’s words.
“You’re a good girl, Hyejin, and I believe you will always do what’s right.” Sooyin puts her hand on Hyejin’s, and it burns. “I know for a fact that my husband has been seeing one of the trainee girls, and I believe that if they would have entrusted anyone with that secret, it would be you,” Sooyin’s words fade as she cranes her head to look right at Hyejin, now lightly gripping her hand. “You would tell me, certainly. If you've heard anything.”
Hyejin doesn’t scare easily. She’s seen too much—experienced too much—to let people get under her skin that quickly. There was something about Sooyin, though, that had the hairs on Hyejin’s neck stand on end.
“You would, right?” The woman’s perfectly rounded nails dug into the side of Hyejin’s palm to the point of hurting.
“I haven’t heard anything,” Hyejin responds, voice solid despite the fear she feels creeping up on her. She doesn’t even consider the idea of offering up another trainee to suffer for the things she has done, can’t imagine it. The trainees do trust Hyejin, see her as a true older sister, and Hyejin in turn would do anything to protect them.
“I don’t believe that.” Sooyin is smiling still, tone anything but kind. She squeezes harder.
“It’s true.”
“No, it’s not.” Sooyin lets go of Hyejin’s hand in favor of grabbing her wrist, fingers tightening around it. Hyejin never noticed how thin her wrists are until right now. She’s starved, probably. Can’t worry about it right now. “You had to have heard something! People don’t keep secrets like that. Someone needs to know something.” Sooyin frays right before Hyejin’s eyes, eyes widening in an indescribable panic. “If you know something—if you… you must tell me. If you don’t, and I find out you lied to me…” Her voice trails off, and Hyejin can see something wavering in Sooyin’s expression. She wants to threaten Hyejin; promise to have her never debut at all, to have her get fired, or punished in other, more physical ways. But she can’t. Not without Hosung’s approval.
The thought shakes Hyejin like lightning running down her spine.
“You should ask your husband.” Hyejin tugs her wrist back, getting up from her seat. “He’s the only one you should ask. You might believe him. More than you believe me.”
Hyejin gets up and moves towards the door, ignoring Sooyin’s indignant sounds. Sooyin is not worth it, Hyejin realizes. She’s in the exact same position as Hyejin is, even if she might not realize it. Hosung holds a hand over both of them, but Hyejin thinks she’s better off. At least she can see the hand for what it is.
Hyejin takes hold of the door handle, turning to Sooyin one last time and giving her a slight bow; almost mocking.
“He’s the one with authority, after all.”
