I just saw someone say the words "jokingly gaslight" this might be a good time to reintroduce the internet to the terms "lying" or perhaps "pranking" or even just "joking" on it's own

"Don't you tread too close to the line this time. Don't get lead too close to the light this time. You went far too close to the line this time, The line this time... Oh!" ~ The Bitter Suite IV and V: The Congregation and the Sermon in the Silt, The Dear Hunter
The cathedral was almost empty, save for a few stragglers in the pews. That's the way things happened on Sunday: Anyone with a conscience would stay after Father Yagami finished his sermons. Today, beneath the vaulted ceilings, Light had preached of trusting God. He cited Matthew, Psalms, and Jeremiah with such conviction that even the staunchest unbelievers would have been moved by his words.
He had power and he knew it.
"Father, forgive me, for I have sinned."
Electricity ran through Light, for the voice was that of the clever, quick-tongued boy. This was one of his flock he'd taken to faster than most. This was L.
The priest took a moment to compose himself before speaking. “Child, confess your sins.”
“I have...” A slow breath came from the booth. Light hung onto L’s courage eagerly, knowing that if he would say what stained his soul, he could be redeemed. And, praise be to God, L did: “I have paid for favor in the world’s eyes.”
“How do you mean? Have you bribed politicians, or...was the payment for pleasure?” Light already knew the answer; the single dime left on the collection plate this morning told all. It was a symbol Higuchi used to relay the fact that he’d given Light more souls to save from lust’s wicked clutches. The pimp offered one to every man and woman who paid for his services, nudging them in the Church’s direction the morning after and telling them that donation would buy forgiveness as it had sex.
“Pleasure.” It sounded as if L carried the weight of the world on his shoulders, unlike certain other members of Light’s congregation. But was he a truly penitent soul...?
“Go on,” Light encouraged gently.
L shook as he recounted the deeds done, the actions performed, the words whispered under the cover of nighttime.

the funniest part of death note was when light thought, "The police are spying on me through cameras in my room. I need them to think I'm a normal high school boy." and then he proceeded to read a porn magazine for 5 minutes without cranking his chain. all while laying on his bed like this

Every L prequel media operates from a place of “I can make him better” when they should come from a place of “I can and will show you that he is worse.” No more crying in orphanages. I want L pre-Death Note doing completely inexcusable things to get his suspects to confess. I want media which creates an environment in which L is not the hero against Kira but the lesser evil - and not even by that much. Anyway. Will not tag this I do not want to speak to the larger fandom abt anything approaching nuance lol.
