love

The English word love means so many things, and somehow still means all of them deeply. We use it in all the spaces between gentle attachment, sweet affection and strong devotion. Some people say we overuse it, and yet others say we don’t use it enough. 

The word love is the linguistic descendant the Old English lufu (its verb counterpart was lufian), meaning “the feeling of love, affection, attraction, friendliness, care and concern of God, love as either a concept or personification.” This comes from the Proto-Germanic term lubo, which was also adopted by several other Germanic languages with meanings including “beloved” (as in Gothic liufs) and “praise” (as in Old Norse lof).

The Proto-Indo-European root behind all of these is *leubh, meaning, “to love, desire, care.” This PIE also produced the Latin libet, meaning “pleasing, agreeable.” It produced a few Sanskrit terms as well, including लोभयति lobhayati, “allure, or to derange” and लुभ्यति  lubhyati, “to desire, bewilder, to be perplexed.”
