#AD Our recent trip to Olympic National Park in partnership with @expedia was amazing! Hard to believe that we’ve been living 2.5 hours away from a National Park filled with rainforests, lakes, waterfalls, mountains, and beaches and we just finally visited it for the first time! Expedia made it possible for us to shift our travel plans and find something to fit our needs. I’m glad we stayed near home this summer and took the time to explore the beauty that’s in our own backyard! In case you’re considering a trip to Olympic National Park, my new blog post shares an optimal 3-day itinerary for visiting many of the popular sights. So be sure to check my bio link and read about all the fabulous spots this national park has to offer and where we stayed during our trip. This photo was one of my favorite memories of the trip. After a day of hiking we headed to Rialto Beach for sunset and arrived about 15 minutes before sunset to watch the waves crash against the shore and the sun dip below the horizon in a bright orange blaze. RoadTrippin Tips • Do you have a favorite road trip tip? We finished up with our WA road trip and I have some tips in case you’re planning your own upcoming road trip. 1) DON’T overfill your days. If you’re driving just to reach a certain point, perhaps you don’t mind planning 7-9 hour driving days. But if you’re on a road trip to explore a region and make stops along the way you need to dial back the time you’re driving. I like to keep drives around 3 hours when I’m exploring an area. On our trip last year along the CA coast we tried to drive way too many hours between stops and it meant we missed a few sites and got in late to our overnight destinations. 2) PACK well. Keep in mind what you’ll need to access while driving. Are your snacks and essentials easily accessible? 3) CLEAN at each stop. No one wants to be in a stinky, messy car for hours each day. Be sure to straighten up and throw away any trash at each stop. Keeping your car tidy will help you feel better while driving and riding. 4) know your ROUTE. Most of us rely on GPS for navigation but if you lost your phone or connection would you know where to go? Make sure you have a general idea of your route and roads before you head out. Also, be sure to have your overnight stops and hotels noted somewhere that doesn’t require cell signal just in case you hit a dead zone. 5) have a great road trip VEHICLE. I’m a #toyotapartner and was able to borrow this @toyotausa #4Runner for our trip. Plenty of room for the girls in the backseats and all four suitcases and other supplies fit neatly in the trunk space. Plus its rugged design meant I didn’t worry about driving on mountain roads or parking off road at trailheads. I was even surprised that it averaged 18.5 MPG for our trip! • Unexpected Trip Highlights • What’s been your best unplanned trip highlight? I’ll admit that I’m a planner. I want to know where I’m sleeping each night and what the plan for the day is. But occasionally I’ll be surprised by something that gets thrown at me by my family and it turns out to be a highlight from our trip. This photo is a bit of both. I knew I wanted to visit Lake Crescent in Olympic National Park but thanks for a swimming holes of WA book my oldest bought for my husband we were led to a specific area of the lake. And then this unexpected family life moment happened. My girls who are pretty far past the water play stage of life started a water fight with each other. I grabbed my phone and started snapping and captured some really fun images that help showcase a fun moment of our trip and highlight the joy a vacation can bring when you take some time to just slow down and spend some time enjoying a spot. This stop wasn’t just a checkbox to mark off my itinerary, instead it became a spot filled with laughter and memories. A time that will be forever remembered as a time of fun and enjoyment. On your next trip, remember to slow down. Leave time for doing nothing. Don’t rush. • WA COAST • We’re on a family road trip near home in Washington and yesterday we visited the northern coast of the Olympic Peninsula. One of the popular spots we headed to was Crescent Beach on the Straight of Juan de Fuca which is a sandy cove beach at the Salt Lake Recreation Area. Our late start to the day actually paid off because we got lucky with parking spots as people started leaving when we arrived around 230. The water was extremely clear and there were some waves that drew plenty of surfers but while we were there the waves stayed pretty flat and soon the surfers started leaving. At lower tide you can even hike up that little island. Where were you this time last year? I decided to look back and see what travel adventures I was on this time last year and I discovered that I was in Maine with my bff and podcast partner @we3travel. HAPPY CANADA DAY! 🇨🇦 What’s your favorite place in Canada? If everything was running as normal we’d be in Edmonton right now visiting family. I looked for an image of The Ledge building (Alberta Capitol building in Edmonton) because for Canada Day locals will go to the Ledge and have a free pancake breakfast with everyone attending wearing red shirts. It seems that this summer will have a resurgence of the road trip vacation but I also think more and more people will be enjoying the outdoors. RV sales and rentals are through the roof and cabin rentals seem to be booming. We’re definitely spending more time at home this year. Normally we’d be preparing for our annual road trip up to visit family in Canada but unfortunately that’s probably not happening this year. Happy Sweet 16 Birthday! Lizzy turns 16 today and I’m a bit in shock that time has gone so quickly. People say to enjoy the years you have with your kids because it goes quickly but you don’t realize just how quickly until you’re singing Happy Birthday, handing over a set of car keys, and talking about colleges and adult life plans. Joining the ‘My First Disney Character Challenge’ with a throwback photo of one of my girls’ first character meetings. This was actually our second trip to @disneyland and I sewed these fun Minnie outfits for them to wear on the day we went to Toontown. We got there at opening and a little birdie (or fairy) must have told Minnie she had guests arriving because as I was pushing the stroller into the land my girls took off running to Minnie who was running towards them! She then brought them back to us and I finally got my camera out to capture this moment. #wegotthisseattle In mid to late February I didn’t think much of the fact that Seattle was becoming the headline for the news about #covid_19, I was more concerned with making the decision of whether to cancel our spring break trip to Japan. I went to Disney World and on a Disney Cruise with my girls, then came home and flew the next day to Disneyland for a conference. The whole time thinking it’ll be ok, let’s just be smart and careful. And then in a matter of days everything went crazy. Now I’m living in one of the most feared cities in the USA at the moment and my daughters are going to be at home for at least six weeks. My husband is working from home and I’m watching as my blog traffic and income plummet as no one is researching and planning for vacations right now. But as is normally the case, moments of light shine through the darkness. A hashtag is trending for Seattle residents to help bond us together and bring us hope in this time of need. Don’t forget that you can still shop online, you can still support small business, you can still donate to non-profits. Now is the time for our nation to come together and show that there is strength when we all work together. I truly hope this pandemic can be controlled soon and we can once again go out and explore our world.
