When it comes to a party, Aera knows how to throw a good one. And if there’s any event that requires a celebration, it’s obviously their first official night as a group! Or, like, whatever, since everyone else is supposed to arrive soon… including, maybe, Eunji… seriously, as great as it was to have the opportunity to see Seonhwa and Kaori again, what was the point if Eunji was gonna be there?
But whatever– she’s not Jeon Aera for nothing! So far, it’s just her and the five other final contestants at the dorms, with some of the girls relaxing in their rooms and others milling about. With the others set to arrive a little after seven, she’s feeling pretty restless herself… she does, after all, want to know more than maybe anyone who their last three groupmates were set to be.
It’s this impatience that has her pacing the living room, slumping upside-down against the back of the couch, sprawling out on the coffee table. This wait should be, like, criminal.
“yyyyyaaaaHHHHH…!!” She calls into the empty living room. “Come hang out with me before the filming, I’m bored!”
this was it. it was their final night before the last live show for pop!star. they were already officially a group, with a name and a mostly full line-up. there would be three more moving in after tomorrow night, a thought that made areum peek at the three empty beds spaced out around the apartment. she had her hopes, trainees she wanted to walk into the dorm tomorrow with packed suitcases and big smiles. she wanted yumi to come back, and seonhwa.
she and aera had moved into their new shared room just today. it had been difficult to narrow down her stuffed animal collection, but she felt pleased with how the two of them had decorated their room. it was so cute and pink and comfy. coming out of it, she watched as her twin slumped across the living room. aera was dramatic, but it was always fun.
areum grabbed a few bags of snacks from the cupboard, tossing one onto her sprawled out sister. “it’s not going to be too long until everyone comes over. want to help me put some snacks and blankets out so everyone can be comfortable on the floor?”

Minho, as needy and clingy as he was, didn’t like when Xion left without him. Call him a brat, he knew he was one, but they had been together from the moment he had moved into the trainee dorms and it didn’t help that they had been roommates for years. So when Xion hyung said he had something to do, Minho couldn’t go with him because he had homework to do and he couldn’t afford missing a deadline with them filming Bon Voyage soon, and with the upcoming tour, he had to finish as much homework as he could.
So of course he had been really excited, like a puppy running to the door when he heard Yuntian was back. Minho grinned at him, hugged him, and led him to the living room without letting go of his hand. He had finished all his work just in time, and now he wanted cuddles and to watch a movie with his favorite person, yet there was a noise he couldn’t ignore. Minho might not be the smartest person in their dorm, but he could tell something was under the hat he was weird. It looked so cute on him, but everything usually did.
That only made him more suspicious, as he stared at his hyung. Without another word, and glad that they were the only ones in the dorms right now, he reached for the hat and threw it to the floor, gasping at the sight of a very small and fluffy thing. “A bunny!” It was the cutest bunny he had ever seen, not that he had seen that many, but he could tell this one was the cutest and most adorable. “Is the bunny ours, hyung?”
xion felt a whoosh, the hand that wasn’t clasped in minho’s flailed in the air as he attempted to grab it back. if anything, the little rabbit clucks became louder, turning into joyful rabbit clucks of sweet, sweet freedom. xion felt a little bad for hiding the bunbun in his hat, but he had to get through the lobby security without suspicion! he felt mr doorman would definitely call sara if he say xion smuggle the rabbit in a cage. still, he couldn’t feel upset about the exposure of his secret rabbit mission with how happy minho looked.
it was a very well known fact in prism (and to the world, let’s be honest), that xion would really do anything to make minho smile. like smuggle a rabbit into their apartment.
minho really had such a pretty smile, eyes curving into the loveliest eye smile xion had ever seen, almost the perfect embodiment of joy. he could look at him forever.
wait! he can’t get distracted. xion almost nodded before he realized there was still an actual living rabbit perched on his head. he gently lifted the rabbit up, cuddling the little bunny close to his chest as he smiled back at minho. “yeah, he’s ours. i saw him while i was out and he looked so cute, minnie! i couldn’t just leave him behind! i walked into the adoption center and he even hopped up to me!” his eyes went starry remembering the pleased, happy feeling of being chosen by the rabbit. “do...do you wanna name him, minnie? since he’s ours?”

It takes quite a bit to put Aera in a sombre mood; the tall trainee seems to see everything in the rosiest glasses possible. Tonight, though, her eyes are red and puffy– they always are, after elimination day, because most of the other trainees are people she’s gotten to know for years.
Areum is perfect hugging size, so she folds her twin into her arms. It’s only logical, anyway. Areum’s sitting there looking so huggable? Then she better prepare to get hugged. Areum Hugs™ always make her feel better.
With a cold shiver, Aera realizes they’re nearing the end; only one more round after this and the group is debuting. She cycles through the list of everyone they have: Areum. Herself. Sunny. Yumi. Soeun. Byul. Nana. Sohee. At this point, Aera recognizes that odds are either she or Areum will be on the team, but she doesn’t want to say goodbye to any of the rest; even Kaori’s elimination felt like an upset to her.
What if she debuts but Areum doesn’t? What about vice versa? Aera’s not sure that she even wants to be in a group if her twin isn’t in the same one– she wonders if that’s a boon or a hindrance. Would it be marketable to have twins in the same group, or better to separate them? She holds Areum tighter.
“Could’ve been one of us tonight,” Aera says miserably. “Can you imagine? If you got eliminated, I’d drop out too. Except for you won’t get eliminated because everyone loves you.”
people always joked aera had sucked all the height in the womb, leaving areum to barely miss the 160 cm mark. she was always at the front of school events, plopped in the middle of family photos. it was easy to lose her in a crowd, but she liked how well she fit into her twin’s hugs. they might not have been the same size, but they were the perfect size for comforting hugs. she leaned into aera, already feeling herself steady against her sister. like a grounding anchor.
she thought about what aera was saying. it’s always a risk. it had been a risk since they stepped into starscape together.
what if one of them debuts and the other doesn’t?
having to compete on pop!star, week after week of competitions and judgement, made it all the more risky. sure, someone in management might look at a stock of the existing trainee photos and put them together, but a panel of judges? as the numbers dwindled each week, areum wondered, what would happen if one of them was eliminated next time?
she had no doubt aera would debut. her glamorous, talented sister, who worked so hard. aera always made areum think there were people who were born for this, so pretty and talented and bright. she couldn’t imagine a situation where aera’s name was called, even though the idea of it sent goosebumps up and down her arms.
maybe it was dumb to condition one’s success on someone else, but areum couldn’t imagine not having aera by her side. “both of us or none of us.” she grabbed aera’s hand to hold tightly. “but we don’t have to worry. we can do this. we gotta.”

It was pretty obvious to anyone around that Saeun supported her cousins over anyone else in Pop!Stars, more her little sisters than anything else. Reason why she tried her best to see them at least once a week, considering they were pretty busy with the show and her own group was getting ready for their upcoming comeback at the ends of the month. So this was all she could get now, but it was better than nothing.
She handed Areum a coffee as she took the seat next to her, bringing the straw to her lips, the sweet taste of juice making her smile. With promotions around the corner, she was supposed to have all her meals at the Starscape cafeteria, which meant they couldn’t go out for lunch like Saeun would have like to, or to have a meal at her dorm, one cooked by herself.
“Are you alright?” She asked, placing a soothing hand on the younger’s shoulder. The latest elimination had been difficult, all of them liked both Kaori and Sunny. Why was Eunji still part of it but great girl had left? That was something Saeun would never understand, but she supposed that girl brought ratings somehow, she didn’t know. “How are the other girls doing?”
it was strange to think they were so close to the end. each week seemed like the longest and shortest week of her life. both too much time in between shoots and too little time to practice. every week was a new routine, a blank slate to prove yourself again and again worthy of debuting. it was tiring, but areum told herself it was worth it.
she took the coffee with a smile, taking a slow sip of the cold drink. she hadn’t ever had coffee on the regular until becoming a trainee, where having iced americanos seemed to be as regular as monthly evaluations. she hummed in response to saeun’s question. her older cousin often felt more like an older sister than a cousin, even though the two of them didn’t grow up in the same town. saeun was always cool and dependable, one of the reasons areum decided to accept starscape’s offer.
“i’m okay.” each elimination hurt, but sunny’s was like a punch to the face. no one had been expecting it. the judges were hard on her, sure, but she had easily been the best of the performances that week. “it just sucks. i can’t wrap my head around it. none of us can. the dorms have been weird since friday. i’m grateful to be doing well, but i feel guilty.”
