Story Three from Across the Tracks, Brighton
I noticed a car had broken down outside the shop; the bonnet was up and the owner was looking at the engine. He eventually came into the shop and I expected him to ask for help. When he did speak, however, I was left open-mouthed: “Have you got a clutch for a Citroen 2CV?” he said. He’d just walked past thousands of CDs and records to reach the counter and yet he still asked me that ridiculous question!
“Sorry mate, I don’t,” I replied, still in shock.
“Ok,” he said, “well, what clutches do you have in stock then?”

Many thanks to the one and only Paul Weller for sharing 'Strange Requests...' to his fans. As many readers of Last Shop Standing might be aware he appeared in the documentary of the same name. His continued support of Record Stores is always appreciated, as is his support of the book! You can find Mr Weller on Facebook over HERE.

Story One from 101 Collectors Records, Farnham
Three enthusiastic lads came into the shop. I engaged them in conversation and it was clear to me that they were real music fans. I have strong views about the way some bands and artists have been hyped up in the media as the ‘next big thing’, good examples being Duffy, Mika and The Darkness, so I decided to share my opinion.
“Take Radiohead,” I said. “They’re good, but if you listened to the music press, you’d think they were the best band since The Beatles, and not just another indie guitar band!” The three lads started laughing and with that paid for a large batch of bargain LPs they’d selected from my racks, said how much they’d enjoyed visiting and walked out of the shop.
The next day a photographer friend of mine came into the shop and told me that a popular indie band had been at the college in town for a photo shoot he’d organised and while waiting for their lead singer, Thom Yorke, to join them, they’d decided to check out the local record shop. It was then the penny dropped: the lads I’d been chatting away to the previous day were Jonny Greenwood, Ed O’Brien and Phil Selway. I was reliably informed that the boys from Radiohead had enjoyed calling into my shop and appreciated my views on the media hyping bands, including their own!
