Front Desk Horoscope / December 2022
by Stephanie Maltez
Tumblr media
The cards drawn up this month are from The Wild Unknown Tarot Guidebook by Kim Krans
Steph’s Amateur Front Desk Intuitive Interpretation of Energy in December: It’s a bit of a rough transition in December.  Winter brings death and hibernation. Even when you’re happy or relieved to see something go you can surprise yourself with grief. There’s a down the rabbit hole Alice in Wonderland kind of energy to everything. It’ll pass but don’t lose yourself in the chaos.
Sagittarius, Happy Birthday!!
The Hanged Man / Sacrifice & Letting Go
Many people talk about the art of ‘letting go.’ But what does it really mean? How do you achieve it? The hanged man has all the answers; he’s the master of non-attachment. This card implies there’s a sacrifice or a difficult or painful situation coming up in your life. Though you naturally want to resist and struggle through it, be more like the hanged man. Find stillness, open your eyes, and use this new perspective to learn something. You’re stuck here either way.
…and Happy Early Birthday Capricorn!
Father of Pentacles / Steady & Entrepreneurial
The Father of Pentacles is a steady, gentle man. Upon first meeting, he can almost seem dull because of his extremely calm temperament. But underneath is an incredibly passionate man who prioritizes the stability of his job, family, and home. He is entrepreneurial and diligent at work. A true pleasure to know.
Aquarius
9 of Cups / Bliss & Harmony
At last, the card of wishes come true. When the Nine of Cups appears, worries and fears will be cast away. A new phase of peace and harmony awaits. The world seems to be granting your every wish. Good health, happiness, and even material gains are heading your way. Enjoy.
Pisces
Father of Wands / Charismatic & Creative
The Father of Wands is a man of mystique and charisma. Others are drawn to him naturally, and he welcomes them with an open and loving heart. Usually you’ll find him involved in the healing arts, as he’s deeply compassionate and in tune with life and nature. He is able to hold steady and still during conflict.
Aries
Temperance / Healing & Renewal
The great blue heron remains calm and peaceful as she blends the opposing elements of fire and water. The temperance card asks you to be a moderator much like the heron. Focus on cooperation and compromise. If you’ve been excessive in one aspect of your life, practice self-restraint and moderation now. You’ll find a new sense of healing and balance from bringing a little hamony back into your life.
Taurus
10 of Wands / Burdens & Blockage & Difficulty
The 10 of Wands is a difficult card to face. Mental or physical burdens have been weighing on your spirit. Over time this leads to hopelessness and depression. You simply can’t ‘get through’ to what you want. You cannot see the way if this card appears in response to a person or situation, it may be best to simply walk away. But if this card comes up frequently, it indicates you are attracted to negativity. You choose to walk the hard road.
Gemini
8 of Wands / Sudden Movement or Change
The 8 of Wands strikes like lightning. It’s a card of news, change, or clarity in an unresolved situation. You might hear from an old friend out of the blue or receive some surprising news that shifts the direction of your course. This card sometimes means literal movement is on the horizon, so be ready to travel if the opportunity arises.
Cancer
Ace of Pentacles / Prosperous Beginnings
In the center of even the giant redwood trees...a tiny seedling once stood. Such is the energy of the Ace of Pentacles – it’s the seed that takes root, grounding you for the future. You’re in the beginning phases of a prosperous venture. Stay grounded. Go outside and take time to appreciate nature. You may also find a windfall of wealth headed your way.
Leo
Strength / Mastery of Emotions
It’s common to think of this card as the rearing, devouring side of the lion. But look again – the ‘strength’ this card suggests is a much deeper force that’s fraud within. The lion represents our most patient, composed self. He’s a master of focus, compassion, and self-control. When this card comes up, you’re in need of harnessing this power for yourself. All the courage you need can be found in the muscle known as the heart.
Virgo
8 of Swords / Trapped & Powerless
Surrounded by obstacles and threats on all sides, you find yourself the victim. You see no way out, no available choices. Your perceptions keep you from opening your wings and taking flight. What keeps you suspended here? Yourself or others? The 8 of Swords demands an answer.  You cannot hang here much longer.
Libra
Daughter of Swords / Honest & Insightful
The Daughter of Swords is a young woman whose honesty and insights take her far in life. People truly value her frankness. She learns from keen observation...it almost seems as though she never stops ‘watching.’ Sometimes this becomes a burden for her, as she can’t help noticing this or that small detail that could've been done better. There’s a potential for her to hold on to those experiences and become spiteful and judgmental.
Scorpio
3 of Cups / Friendship & Joy & Bounty
The 3 of Cups is a lovely card. It foresees you in the company of amazing friends, creating memories together that you’ll forever hold dear. These are not any ol’ friends; they are people with whom you feel a rare connection. With them you feel truly ‘yourself.’ Enjoy each minute of their company. This card can also indicate an upcoming celebration. Love abounds!

What is your favorite family dish? Who makes it the best? Why?
My favorite family dish is Arroz con pollo. My grandmother slaves over the stove for hours, getting everything to the perfect consistency. She's very tight-lipped regarding her recipe but has carefully crafted a family cookbook to ensure that her recipe gets passed down for years. She is very persistent that the only thing that makes her recipe different from the rest is the love she mixes with the rice. Obviously, no amount of love matches up to a grandmother's, right?
What local restaurant do you recommend for us to dine at that will give us a scrumptious taste of your culture? What do we absolutely have to order?
Although this restaurant is not Cuban food, my grandmother swears by it. Many Cubans migrated to Cuba from Spain, so many traditions and recipes stuck around. Her favorite restaurant is Centro Vasco in Little Havana, and the two dishes she and my grandfather order are the Cochinillo de Segovia and Zarzuela de Mariscos. It is definitely worth the visit if you’re in the area! If you're on the hunt for good Cuban food, you cannot go wrong with Havana Harry's or Versailles, both of which are Miami staples.
What is one of your favorite family traditions that you feel is representative of your ethnic culture?
My favorite family tradition that represents my culture happens on Christmas Eve and goes by Noche Buena. It’s tradition to roast a pig, which preparation begins three days in advance, and have all the traditional dishes such as rice and beans or sometimes even steamed yuca. My grandmother recalls a time in her childhood when she lived in Cienfuegos, Cuba. All her family flew to her hometown to celebrate Noche Buena together, immediately making it her favorite time of the year since it was a guarantee that no one in their right mind would ever even think of missing it.
When visiting the country of your ethnic/cultural origin what should we do as tourists? (Visit a particular site? Purchase an item from a specific vendor?)
Due to the current conditions of Cuba, it is a relatively rare place to visit. My grandmother had never returned since leaving the country through the Pedro Pan program when she was twelve. She loved Cuba and wants to keep her memory of it which is why she will never return. Many places in Miami began to mold into the likeness of Cuba because of the influx of Cuban immigrants in the 1960s. The area of Little Havana is the perfect example of this. Many traditions, decor, and ambiances have carried over from Cuba, which is why my grandmother lives to visit that area. Many Cubans gather around El Parque de Domino, which translates to "Domino Park." Domino tables are scattered throughout the space, and the booming voices of Cubans trash-talking one another fill the air. This traditional Cuban pastime reminds my grandmother of home and reminds me of every family get-together. An event that takes place in Little Havana that my grandmother enjoys is Carnival de Miami on Calle Ocho. It's just one other thing that the Cubans brought over to ensure that Miami feels like home.
What should we not do as tourists that can be seen as disrespectful or offensive?
"Pais que fueres, coma costumbre que vieres."
This a quote that my grandmother highly recommends we follow. When visiting anywhere, you should adopt the customs throughout the location. When my grandmother emigrated to Miami, she adopted the customs here; why can't others do the same?
What is a stereotype you would like to do away with?
Two stereotypes my grandmother and I would love to do away with are that Cubans are loud and talk enthusiastically with our hands. We definitely live up to the stereotype ourselves; we just wish it wasn't a standard correlation to Cuban Culture.
What was a time that you were embarrassed by your culture? How have you grown from that experience?
My grandmother touched on the fact that she's embarrassed by the refusal of the new generation to learn the native tongue of their heritage. She has grown from this experience by ensuring that she keeps the language alive in her home.
How would you describe your culture in three words?
Loud, happy, and expressive. Unfortunately, as much as my grandmother and I wish that Cubans weren't known for being so loud and expressive, we are just as much to blame for stereotyping Cubans as such... clearly.
What is something that you would teach us from your culture and traditions?
Cubans tend not to restrain their feelings or emotions in any situation. The restraining of feelings or emotions is something that, at times, can be limited due to the cultural climate. We hope that Cubans can teach others not to let those limitations stop them from being more expressive, kind, and loving throughout; something essential that we believe Cubans embody.
What is a song we can listen to that represents your culture?
Caballo Viejo sung by Roberto Torres. This song is a Cuban bonding song for all the exiles.
How does your culture define your perspective?
My grandmother expressed that the Cuban culture "gives me family ties, defines me of who I was, and prepares me for who I am."
To me, the Cuban culture has shown me never to take for granted what I have and the country I live in. Through hard work and a fresh new start, my grandparents were able to plant roots and grow in ways they never deemed possible, and for     that, I will always be grateful for the Cuban culture's perseverance.

Dirty Funky Fusion Kettle Cooked Chips
by Victoria Figueiredo
Tumblr media
Picture this: you’re sitting at your desk, stomach rumbling. Yes, friend, it’s time for lunch! Excellent, you think, off to FlyBuy you go. You order your sandwich at the counter, grab your usual beverage, and then head over to the chip aisle. It’s time to choose your sandwich’s sidekick, the supporting star of this lunch hour. But wait, these options! There’s so many! Could you go for plain Lays? Sure, but where’s the fun in that? You’ve curated a reputation as an adventurous luncher and now is not the time to let that rep falter. Salt and Vinegar? Too assertive for your palate. Barbecue? You used to be a big BBQ person in years past, but that’s just not who you are anymore. The bags start to blur together as the panic sets in - what if there’s no appropriate chip choice out there for you at all? What’s the best backup? Forgo chips entirely? No, you’re not a wretch. Pretzels? NO, GOSH DARN IT, TOO DRY. SOMEBODY HELP, THE CHIPS ARE LAUNCHING A COUP! Your vision tunnels, you break out in a thin layer of sweat, and it all goes dark…
Shhhhh, child, shhhhh. I’m here to help. The answer to your snack quandary was never in the chip aisle at all, buddy. Come with me to the deli counter. Yes, where the Dirty brand kettle chips are. I take your hands and place them around a small bag, like that one scene in Ghost, but not sexy because I’m no Swayze and listen, I’m sorry, but you’re no Demi Moore. Regardless, you’re holding the solution now. It’s a bag of Dirty Funky Fusion kettle chips.
These chips have got it all. Whispers of salt and vinegar, memories of barbecue, essence of sour cream and onion, crunchy kettle cooked texture - it doesn’t matter what you’re after. These chips will do it. They’re your lunch chameleon, your Meryl Streep. Go on, try one! I did the legwork and the water’s just fine…
The final verdict: it's a 9/10 from me.

What is your favorite family dish? Who makes it the best? Why?
My favorite family dish is Mote de queso, it is a cheese soup from my city: Monteria, it's so good that it spreads all over the Colombian coast now. Every time I go back home, we always gather at my grandma’s house for lunch to eat Mote, usually with chicharron. Honestly, its comfort food brings back so many great memories.
What local restaurant do you recommend for us to dine at that will give us a scrumptious taste of your culture? What do we absolutely have to order?
There aren’t many Colombian restaurants that serve food from the north coast, which is very different from the rest of Colombia, but there is a really good Colombian restaurant called Mondongo’s in Doral, try “bandeja paisa” or “ajiaco” both amazing!
What is one of your favorite family traditions that you feel is representative of your ethnic culture?
Christmas for sure!! We always gather around food. We celebrate “La noche buena”, cook together during the day or since the day before and at night we throw our best outfit on to receive baby Jesus. All of my family comes together to eat and dance the night away, at 12AM we say “Feliz Navidad” and exchange gifts for everyone, it’s very heart warming and probably my favorite day of the year.
When visiting the country of your ethnic/cultural origin what should we do as tourists? (Visit a particular site? Purchase an item from a specific vendor?)
There are so many places to go in Colombia… But Cartagena could be my No. 1 recommendation, beautiful colonial architecture, amazing food ( try arepa de huevo ), and very happy people. Just be careful you don’t get tricked hahaha!
What should we not do as tourists that can be seen as disrespectful or offensive?
Colombians are so chill that I can’t think of something that would offensive…
Maybe… not having fun!
What is a stereotype you would like to do away with?
Drugs for sure!! we don’t like Pablo Escobar, we don’t like Narcos, we all don’t do drugs… At school people that you met (non latinos) would always bring this up and it is very annoying.
What was a time that you were embarrassed by your culture? How have you grown from that experience?
Nada, I love being Colombian
How would you describe your culture in three words?
Rich, Happy, and Loud
What is something that you would teach us from your culture and traditions?
We always try to see the bright side of things, always joking about something, and an honest smile takes you places! y
“If there is no solution to the problem then don't waste time worrying about it. If there is a solution to the problem, then don't waste time worrying about it.”
What is a song we can listen to that represents your culture?
“El Mapale”
Caribbean Salsa from “Joe arroyo” – El caminante (my fav)
We listen to appropriated African music; we call it “Champeta”
How does your culture define your perspective?
I’m a happy, outgoing person who loves to go through life making other people smile, I’m adventurous and most of the time even if I'm afraid I’ll do it. My mom taught me that there’s nothing that can bring you down if you don’t allow it, that it is always better together, to see good in people, to offer a helping hand … and to always keep my chin up. This is a perspective, shaped from growing up surrounded with positivity, sense of community and happy people.

Front Desk Horoscopes: October 2022
by Stephanie Maltez
Tumblr media
The oracle cards drawn up this month are by Toni Carmine Solerno
Libra, Happy Birthday!!
Angel of Support - The Universe has heard your silent cry for help.
The Universe has heard your silent cry for help and has sent an angel to support and guide you through the current circumstances. Your financial and emotional wellbeing is about to take a turn for the better through an unexpected blessing or sudden change in fortune that is soon to come your way. Surrender all fear and anxiety and trust! The universe is conspiring to help you. Emotional, spiritual and material support come through a seemingly chance encounter with someone new, or through an unexpected offer. Stop worrying!
…and Happy Early Birthday Scorpio!
Angel of Clearing - Your time of waiting and confusion will soon be over.
The Angel of Clearing is at work right now clearing your auric field. This will pave the way for a time of renewed clarity, focus and purpose in your life. Over the coming days you will feel the effects of this clearing as all areas of your life are brought into balance and harmony. Give thanks to your angel for this gift and know that you deserve all the blessings coming your way. Know also that the period of doubt, frustration and confusion you have experienced in recent months was a necessary part of your growth, and in its own way also a blessing, for just as Nature has her changing seasons, so too does your life, which is governed by the same laws and moves in constant cycles in accordance with the Divine Will of the great Creator. Life constantly carries us within its ebb and flow; towards the horizon, across the great ocean of life, then back to rest upon the shores of our own divinity.
Sagittarius
Goddess of Nature - You reap what you sow; your dream is coming to fruition.
Your dream is coming to fruition. This is a time to reap the rewards and benefits that are derived from the seeds of a  project, venture or idea you planted some time ago. It has not all been plain sailing, and many a time you have doubted whether your many efforts and labour would ever be rewarded. Yet harvest time has come. A time when you reap  what you have sown. Accept all the blessings about to come your way and realize that they are the result of the love, courage, dedication and commitment you have shown in the recent past. Give thanks to Mother Nature and enjoy!
Capricorn
God of Indulgence - It’s alright. Stop beating yourself up!
It is wonderful to indulge in the things we love every once in a while; everything is fine in good measure, just don’t overdo it. Whether it is food, drink or substances or any kind, relationships or material possessions, remember, excess of anything leads to some form of imbalance. Yet at the same time, remember that all is valid and all is love. A little indulgence in some form or another is natural and even healthy, so don’t beat yourself up when you do indulge in those things you love, just be mindful. Don’t deny yourself, just keep it in balance and when you do indulge try to do it in ways that nurture and nourish your spirit rather than cloud or suppress it.
Aquarius
Goddess of Knowledge - Start to apply what you already know - trust your intuition.
Some two thousand five hundred years ago, Plato, the great ancient Greek philosopher wrote, ‘All learning is simply recollection.’ While study is important, remember also that all you truly need to know is inside you. The Goddess of Knowledge has appeared in your reading today to encourage you to start to put all the wonderful knowledge that you already possess to good use. You do not need to do further courses and obtain further certificates or accreditation in order to be effective in the work you would like to do. Simply start doing it now. Start to apply what you already know and trust your intuition. Focus on love and light and ask the universe to guide you. When your intentions and motivations are driven by love, the universe and the Goddess of Knowledge will help you act in the best interests of all concerned.
Pisces
Angel of Expression - Speak your truth and express yourself clearly.
There is something you are not expressing, because you fear hurting someone you love or care for. The Angel of Expression has shown up in your reading today to encourage you to speak your truth and express yourself clearly. Know that the truth, when spoken honestly, clearly and with love, will never truly hurt anyone. Lack of self-expression is soul-destroying for all concerned and prevents life’s natural flow. The Angel of Expression understands your fears regarding this issue and is here to help you through this difficult time. Allow her to help you find the courage to face this issue clearly. By expressing yourself honestly and clearly, this situation will heal in accordance with the highest good of all concerned. Yet do not try to predetermine or control the outcome. Trust - for the power that made you both, will heal you both.
Aries
Angel of Communication - Communicate clearly; don’t be afraid to say it like it is.
One of our major lessons in this lifetime is to learn to communicate what you want clearly. You assume that those around you know what you want or how you feel. Yet the truth is that they do not. Because of your failure to communicate honestly and clearly, those around you often end up confused or, at best, having to guess what it is you want, feel or expect. Do not be afraid to say it like it is. You cannot lose anything by simply stating your truth. You do not need to blame or accuse others in order to speak your truth, just state your case clearly. Underlying this whole issue is a fear of not being accepted or not gaining approval of others, and therefore you are often afraid to speak up. Know that it is an act of love unto yourself and others to communicate clearly, lovingly and honestly. The Angel of Communication is here to help you work through this issue. Through this process you will honor and empower yourself and gain much respect and love from others.
Taurus
Goddess of the Unknown - A new chapter of your life is just around the corner.
Only through the darkness of night are we able to see the beautiful tapestry of light which stems from the stars above us. This card is here to help you ease your fears about the future and of the unknown. Even though you presently cannot see the light at the end of the tunnel, you are being urged by the Goddess to trust. You are always on the right path even when you think you’ve strayed completely off it. A major chapter in the story of your life has recently come to a close and an exciting new chapter is about to begin. Through the current emptiness, the seeds of a fertile new future sprout through. Soon, you will see the light shining as brightly as ever.
Gemini
Goddess of Justice - What seems an injustice is actually a blessing.
You feel that a certain situation in your life is in some way unfair. Yet be assured that justice, which is the natural state of balance inherent in the universe, does exist. Justice is actually the universal law of cause and effect through which all in life is kept in balance. The recent event which you perceive to be unfair is actually a blessing in disguise, here to guide you towards your highest purpose. It is understandable that you cannot see the blessing at this time, however the Goddess of Justice is asking you to surrender the strong emotions and resentments you’ve attached to this situation. Trust! By letting go of this issue she will help clear your path and create the space for something wondrous to occur.
Cancer
Angel of Guidance - A renewed sense of direction and purpose will soon manifest.
You have felt a bit lost and confused lately, perhaps not sure of which direction to take. The Angel of Guidance has felt your silent cries for help and is here to guide you upon your soul’s chosen path. Close your eyes for a few moments and feel a healing, calming and clarifying light swell from your heart center. Feel it expand through to your auric field creating an aura of rainbow light around you. In your mind’s eye, imagine before you a beautiful golden path surrounded by the lush foliage of trees and flowers, and visualize yourself upon this path heading towards the sun beyond the horizon. The golden path symbolizes your journey in this life, while the sun is the reflection of your soul which is your guiding light. Stop trying to figure it all out and simply trust, for you are always on the right path whether you know it or not. Practice the golden path meditation a little each day and surrender all to your angel of guidance who is here to help you. You will have a renewed sense of direction and purpose very soon. Trust and love!
Leo
Angel of Self-Worth - You are currently undervaluing yourself; It is time to regain your self-worth.
You are currently undervaluing yourself. You are so much more than what you are portraying to the world and those around you. The Angel of Self-Worth is here today to reflect unto you all the beauty, love and light that you are and to help you regain your sense of self-worth. Feel her healing light penetrate your aura this very moment and affirm yourself:
I am a being of light and love. I love and value many wonderful qualities I possess. From this moment forward, I will honor and value myself, all I am and all I do, in the knowledge that I am part of God’s creation. I am worthy of love.
Repeat this affirmation several times each day either out loud or in the silence of your heart. Reflect upon each word and truly believe and own each one. Express each word with all your heart and soul.  As you begin to value yourself, you will find that others also start to value you.
Virgo
God of Reflections - The qualities you see in others are simply your own reflection.
You are giving away your power because you fail to recognize and acknowledge the many wondrous qualities that you possess. The qualities you admire in others are simply reflections of the same qualities within you. Yet often, you falsely believe that others are better than you in some way. It is now time to let go of this belief and allow your beauty, talent and creativity to shine through. From now on, every time you see beauty in another, let it serve to remind you of your own beauty. If you recognize success in another, check to see how success also exists within you, and so on. As your perceptions are brought into balance, you become a more effective force in the world and have more impact on those around you. By acknowledging all the beautiful qualities that you already possess, you open the door to an endless stream of abundance and blessings which stem from the heart of creation.

FRONT DESK HOROSCOPE
Tumblr media
The cards drawn up this month are from The Wild Unknown Tarot Dec & Guidebook by Kim Krans
Steph’s Amateur Front Desk Intuitive Interpretation of the Energy in September: Lots of double life energy. Are you acting as the person you believe yourself to be? Time to reconcile your ideal self with who you are today. Old behaviors are causing uncomfortable feelings.
Virgo, Happy Birthday!!
4 of Wands / Completion, Celebration
You’ve done it! The Four of Wands is a card of completion. Your labors have been steady and strong, and the harvest will be plentiful. In other words, it’s time to party. There might be an upcoming event to mark this occasion...a graduation, wedding, or celebration of some kind. So enjoy yourself and those you love. This is an exciting and prosperous time.
…and Happy Early Birthday Libra!
7 of Swords / Secrecy, Self-Interest
Six swords hang in plain view, while the seventh is tucked under the sly fox’s tail. So goes the story of the seven of swords...a secret is being kept. You’re either the keeper or the kept-from, and it’s time to identify which. Deceit and avoidance linger in the air. Face the cause of secrecy or rixk ostracizing yourself.
Scorpio
Daughter of Pentacles / Responsible, Kind, Supportive
You’ll usually find the Daughter of Pentacles behind the scenes rather than out in the spotlight. Though quite shy, she’s extremely hardworking and responsible. She handles details and logistics well – people depend on her. She has vast amounts of inner strength. Like all of the pentacles family, the Daughter thrives when in nature.
Sagittarius
The Moon / Vivid Dreams and Fears
In many ways the Moon card encompasses the idea of The Wild Unknown. It is the shadow realm, the place where dreams, fears, and mysteries are born. Much darkness can linger here, and if you aren’t careful, this can lead to periods of anxiety and self-doubt...almost as though you’ve lost your way in a house of mirrors. Many great artists have roamed this inner landscape. It’s where imagination and creativity drift freely upon the midnight air.
Capricorn
8 of Cups / Stagnation, Ill Health
The Eight of Cups sends an urgent message to pack your bags and move on. There is no hope of rekindling what’s been lost. You must start anew. This card also points to phases of illness and physical stagnation. The message could not be more clear: nothing good remains for you here. Lift your eyes to the horizon, and let your feet lead you forward.
Aquarius
Mother of Wands / Attractive, Domestic, Vibrant
The Mother of Wands is a vibrant woman and happy mother. Family comes first in her world – she's very protective of it and is the dominant parent within the home. Though proud and determined, she has enough grace and beauty that you’d hardly notice her forceful nature. Oftentimes she has overcome great pain or trauma in her life. It’s important not to get on her bad side.
Pisces
5 of Cups / Grief, Disappointment
The Five of Cups indicates a time of sorrow. A relationship may fall apart or an old friend could slip away. There will be disappointment and even regret. When this card appears, it’s important not to make any hasty decisions. It may also be helpful to look at the type of expectations you place on others. Perhaps they can never do enough to please you.
Aries
The Sun / Vitality, Enlightenment
Imagine for a moment that you’re saking in the warm rays of the sun. It feels nourishing and healing; all your aches and pains just fade away. The Sun card brings this amazing energy into your life. Vitality and health abound, while you feel assurance and clarity in all you do. Spend some extra time outside today, be grateful for the radiance of the sun and the life force it gives all creatures.
Taurus
The Star / Hope, Peace of Mind
Standing outside on a dark night, you gaze up at the starts and sense glimmers of wonder and hope. Even though you can’t find concrete answers to life’s many questions up there in the sky, you can’t help but feel comforted and renewed. Such is the energy of the star card. It is not about actions or situations. It’s simply about connecting to the part of you that is hopeful and serene. This force will bring light back into your life and infuse you with positivity. A lovely card.
Gemini
6 of Cups / Memories, Childhood, Joy
A card of beautiful implications, the Six of Cups focuses on the magic and innocense of childhood. The roots of years past are alight with color and vibrancy...look back upon them, get lost in your memories. Old friends may surface and seek you out. All reunions will be joyful. Enjoy simple pleasure and wonder in all areas of your life.
Cancer
Strength / Mastery of Emotions
It’s common to think of this card as the roaring, devouring side of the lion. But look again – the “strength” this card suggests is a much deeper force that’s found within. The lion represents our most patient, composed self. He’s a master of focus, compassion, and self-control. When this card comes up, you’re in need of harnessing this power for yourself. All the courage you need can be found in the muscle known as the heart.
Leo
10 of Cups / Radiating Energy
The Ten of Cups overflows with positivity. Your goals are being realized, and the excitement surrounding you is magnetic to others. You may feel as though light, or color radiates outward from you – almost as if youre shining. Experience sensations like this with an open and joyful heart. Do not doubt this power.

CULTURAL CORNER: Xioana Berrios
Tumblr media
What is your favorite family dish? Who makes it the best? Why?
I think my favorite family dish is just the classic arroz con habichuelas with fried chicken or bistec encebollao’ & of course, tostones on the side. It never disappoints! My grandmother definitely wins the award for this dish.
What local restaurant do you recommend for us to dine at that will give us a scrumptious taste of your culture? What do we absolutely have to order?
I would totally recommend Mofongo Restaurant in Calle 8! You definitely need to get the Alcapurrias and a Mofongo or Trifongo with your protein and sauce of preference. The Arroz Manposteao’ is delicious too!
When visiting the country of your ethnic/cultural origin what should we do as tourists? (Visit a particular site? Purchase an item from a specific vendor?)
You should definitely visit Old San Juan and get ice cream/sorbet from the street carts. My favorite flavor is coconut! They look like this:
Tumblr media
When it comes to the beaches, I totally recommend planning on visiting Culebra or Vieques for breath-taking beaches and more “island vibes” experience.  In Culebra, you should visit Playa Flamenco and in Vieques my favorite is Playa Caracas. You can also rent a boat for a day, or get a catamaran ticket to visit Culebrita or Cayo Icacos just for the day.
If you like hiking, waterfalls and mountain views, definitely visit El Yunque National Forest.
Another great experience is to visit the Casa Bacardi rum distillery and take a tour around the facility, take some mixology classes, tastings, etc.
How would you describe your culture in three words?
Fun, Colorful & Mixed
What is a song we can listen to that represents your culture?
Preciosa by Marc Anthony – This song definitely sparks emotions in us all the time. A great song to represent how Puerto Ricans feel about our little island and our culture.

RECORDING OAC CALLS
Moving forward, it would be very beneficial to record OAC calls. This recording will be valuable to refer to when we need to confirm items in our notes, or clarify any questions later with the client, consultants or GC.
Google Meets does not have the option to record, but our Zoom account does, and so will our future Teams app… so when we formally switch that will be easy to do.
For now, PMs should schedule OAC calls with Zoom and include the record option.
Also note that although the software may automatically notify attendees that the session is being recorded, the PM should state it at the beginning of the call.

Dear H.R.
How Should I Respond The Next Time My Coworker Asks To Borrow My Clothes?
My co-worker of about a year, “Jill,” frequently compliments my work outfits and inquires about the brand or where I got them. They are not designer, usually resale. At first, the comments were nice, but it’s become an overreach when she’s said things like, “I like it so much I want to rip it off you.” Our employer is having a big gala fundraiser and has been asking for volunteers to be at the event. The other day in passing, Jill said, “Oh, I want to borrow that blue lace dress you wore to XYZ event from a few months ago!” I was a little surprised and didn’t respond in the moment. I’m not going to be volunteering for the upcoming event. I would like your opinion on how to respond when she gets wind that I won’t be there because I have a strong sense that she’ll bring up the dress again.
[The Washington Post]
Karla L. Miller urges the letter to politely, directly tell Jill they don’t lend out their clothes and to see if Jill’s behavior escalates. “If that seems plausible, you might want to keep track of your conversations and bystanders who overhear them in case you need to establish a clear behavioral pattern for HR,” she writes. Read the rest of her answer.
How Should I Handle My Colleagues' Near-Daily Conversations About Soybeans?
I graduated in the middle of the pandemic and got my first real job working remotely, only recently getting to the office as people started getting vaccinated. It was the first time I had to interact with my co-workers face to face. Generally, it's pretty good, but I have two particular co-workers, "Todd" and "Evan," and I'm not sure how to deal with them. Todd believes some weird conspiracy about soybeans. Yeah, the plant. Apparently, they're part of some 3,000-year-old plan from China to take over the world through the power of phytoestrogens or some nonsense. It's crazy, but at least Todd has enough self-awareness to not bring it up unless someone shows interest. Unfortunately, Evan has quickly realized he can bait Todd pretty easily and asks about this almost every day. It drives me nuts overhearing them in the cube farm, but I'm not really sure if it's worth raising it with management and possibly getting one or both in trouble. Can you help me with some perspective?
[Slate] Elizabeth Spiers encourages the letter writer to buy noise-canceling headphones or earplugs. "I'm afraid there's not much you can do here, other than lobby Evan to stop baiting Todd because it's driving you nuts," she writes. Read the rest of her answer.
How Can I Tell My Employee Never To Deliver A Status Update In Song Ever Again?
I am a newly promoted manager and am stumped on how to handle something bizarre that happened in a meeting today, primarily because my sense of humor is getting in the way. I asked one of my employees to explain the progress he’s made in the assignment he’s been working on, and he said, “I would love to tell you…in song.” He proceeded to pull out a harmonica and “find his note,” before erupting into a musical ditty explaining everything in detail. It was so weird…that I did not know how to respond in the moment. Making it worse is that I find this hysterical, and I could not stop smirking the rest of the meeting. Whenever I think about the occurrence, I start to laugh again. However, that doesn’t mean I find it acceptable, and intend to have a serious discussion with him tomorrow. But I’m curious to know how you would address it, particularly since my potential laughter and smiling will not convey how unacceptable I find his behavior. I do not want this to seem like a suggestion. Am I immature in not being able to hide these emotions? Am I making too big a deal about the situation? I never thought I would have to deal with this as a manager.
[Ask A Manager]
Alison Green asks whether the employee’s behavior really requires a serious discussion. “I mean, obviously you don’t want all status updates being delivered in song, but unless it becomes a pattern, I’d just assume it was an amusing one-off from someone having a good time (which is not a terrible thing if it doesn’t impede people’s work) and leave it at that,” she writes. Read the rest of her answer.
Did I Deserve A Write-Up At Work For Informing My Coworker That Chocolate Milk Does Not Come From Brown Cows?
So about two weeks ago, me and another co-worker was talking about the topic of chocolate milk, and well… she’s one of the 10% of Americans that actually believe that chocolate milk comes from brown cows … I admit that I guffawed a bit, to which she took offense to, but I ended up apologizing BUT telling her that I thought she was a bit silly and told her that chocolate milk is actually just regular milk with chocolate syrup. To which, she got defensive and said that she didn’t believe me. So I asked her if I can show her proof that she was wrong and she dared me to do so; so I bought regular milk and chocolate syrup from a nearby store during my lunch, mix it up, and give it to her to drink. She ended up drinking it, and just left in a huff, and apparently just told our shift manager that she was leaving for the day because “she felt attacked by me,” and demands she needed a mental day. To which the shift manager didn’t approve of, but she left anyways, so whatever. But apparently, this whole thing got everyone else attention (because my co-worker made such a big scene about it) that it apparently attracted enough attention that my store manager had to personally call me to his office yesterday and tell me about what happened that day. I didn’t know at the time, but I really offended that poor co-worker of mine SO much that she told my store manager about how she couldn’t work with me anymore and that she even reported me to HR for “discriminating against her beliefs” and that I apparently caused enough mental damage that she couldn’t even go back to work due to how much I humiliated her… over chocolate milk. My store manager even wrote me up and warned me that the next time I acted in such an offensive manner like that, I would be fired. I mean, I’m already quitting and starting a new job anyways, but I worry about whether or not I’m actually the AH for this and if I should be more careful for my next job.
[Reddit via Twitter]
The commenters on the r/AmItheAsshole subreddit take the letter writer’s side. “Yeah it's a cow-ardly move, but some people just can't handle being wrong, even when they know what they've herd is bull,” one of them writes. “I'd try to steer clear in the future.” Read the rest of their answers.

Cultural Corner: Luis Espinoza
Tumblr media
What local restaurant do you recommend for us to dine at that will give us a scrumptious taste of your culture? I have recommended this place to a few of my colleagues at the office in the past. It is called "Yambo restaurant". It is located 10-15 mins from the office and it serves in my opinion the closest replica of Nicaraguan dishes and culture. Please do walk inside as it has a small collection of random images and items from Nicaraguan history and crafts.
What do we absolutely have to order? To keep it simple do try their " Carne asada, tajadas, gallo pinto y queso" which translates to Grill meat with mixed rice and beans and fried cheese. You will not be dissapointed. lol. All other dishes are recommended but try them at your own risk.
When visiting the country of your ethnic/cultural origin what should we do as tourists? (Visit a particular site? Purchase an item from a specific vendor?) When visiting Nicaragua do rent an RBNB or visit an ecolodge hotel in the mountains at San Juan del sur. Getting to the destination is part of the adventure so you will need a 4x4 as there may be a few step narrow mountains trails.
What should we not do as tourists that can be seen as disrespectful or offensive? Nicaraguans loves tourist. There is almost nothing that will be disrespectful to others as long as you are not trying to purposely offend others.
What is a stereotype you would like to do away with? The travel aficionado.
What was a time that you were embarrassed by your culture? How have you grown from that experience? N/A
How would you describe your culture in three words? Humble, friendly, easygoing.
What is a song we can listen to that represents your culture? “Nicaragua nicaraguita” & “el gueguense”

//Front Desk Astrology//

The cards drawn up this month are from The Wild Unknown Tarot Deck & Guidebook by Kim Krans
Steph’s Amateur Front Desk Intuitive Interpretation of the Energy in August: Strong guidance to do everything the right way. Don’t take shortcuts. Follow the instructions. Follow the rules. Etc. This is because, should something uncomfortable pop up, your guides need you to not blame yourself or feel shame or guilt that you could have done something different - especially when you did/said everything right.
Leo, Happy Birthday!! Your card for the month: Father of Cups Diplomatic, Open-Minded The Father of Cups has a truly unique and dynamic personality. He’s the most feminine of all the fathers within the tarot and usually a patron of the arts. He’s a dignified man who supports his family and community. The only thing holding this man back are his deeply rooted insecurities; they are vast and affect his personality in many unpredictable ways.
…and Happy Early Birthday Virgo! Your card for the month: 6 of Pentacles Prosperity, Growth, Generosity The Six of Pentacles indicates that your long-awaited fruits are ready for harvesting, bringing more wealth than anticipated. Make sure you are generous during this bountiful time. This card can also signify generosity coming from someone else. If this is the case, accent the help with grace and put the resources to good use.
Libra Your card for the month: Wheel of Fortune Destiny, Change of Course Whether day or night, the Wheel of Fortune is always in motion. Some call it fate; others, destiny. It’s possible to go for months or years without feeling its presence…but when this card appears, the eye of the wheel is fixed upon you. Don’t be surprised if there’s a change of course heading your way, something you’d least expect. Whatever happens to you during this time, know that it is bringing you closer to your life’s purpose.
Scorpio Your card for the month: Father of Wands
Charismatic, Creative The Father of Wands is a man of mystique and charisma. Others are drawn to him naturally, and he welcomes them with an open and loving heart. Usually you’ll find him involved in the healing arts, as he’s deeply compassionate and in tune with life and nature. He is able to hold steady and still during conflict.
Sagittarius Your card for the month: The Hierophant Mentor, Seeking Knowledge In its simplest form, the Hierophant represents a mentor or teacher. This card signifies a hunger for knowledge, whether it is in the practical or the spiritual realm. You’ve come as far as you can on your own; now it’s time to deepen your practice. Don’t hesitate – join a class, go to a workshop, don’t be afraid of new experiences. A new ceremony or ritual may prove to be both comforting and rewarding. Open your heart, and your teacher will soon appear.
Capricorn Your card for the month: The Chariot Strong Will, Triumph The Chariot is your confidence, your will, and your inner warrior. At points in your life when you felt the bliss of achievement or triumph, you were riding on his back. Build a relationship with this part of yourself. Try to “see” the chariot inside you. The more focused your mind, the easier it will be to sense his presence and stay mounted on his back. With a fixed gaze and sure floating, you’ll be headed toward all you dream of.
Aquarius Your card for the month: 8 of Pentacles Craftmanship, Skill The spider is a true master of her craft. She weaves against all odds with skill, intricacy, and confidence. The Eight of Pentacles requires a similar approach. Hone your skills. You are close to finding mastery at your craft, so strive for it. Pay attention to all the details. In some cases, this card means you need to find a new hobby, something you truly enjoy. Start a project. Become good at it.
Pisces Your card for the month: Mother of Cups Insightful, Psychic
The Mother of Cups rivals the High Priestess with her natural psychic abilities. She’s a gentle, tranquil woman whose insights bring healing to those around her. She thrives when amidst her family, the arts, and music or beauty of any kind. Like a true swan, when the Mother of Cups is pushed, she becomes aggressive and defensive. She’ll commonly see herself as the victim when distressed in a situation.
Aries Your card for the month: The Tower Unexpected Upheaval When The Tower card appears, it’s time to brace yourself for a change. The well-rooted tree that’s been growing strong for decades is crashing down around you. Your world may feel as though it’s literally falling apart – and you didn’t see it coming. Even though this phase is painful and confusing, it will be over soon. You’ll look back and feel grateful things changed course. You might even see it as a personal “breakthrough” in the end.
Taurus Your card for the month: Justice Decisions, Karma With tails entwined, two cats look directly at you…waiting for you to choose between them. Which is right and which is wrong? The justice card implies a weight or heaviness surrounding a choice you have to make. Now is not the time to shun the concept of divine balance, or karma. All of your choices affect your life, and sometimes the lives of those around you, both now and in the future.
Gemini Your card for the month: 3 of Swords Betrayal, Heartbreak, Turmoil A dark complex card, the 3 of Swords is rarely a welcome sight. Its wrath may come in the form of lies, betrayal, cheating, or heartbreak. There will be emotional entanglement and confusion. Do not try to make any decisions while in this state. Wait for your heart and spirit to mend.
Cancer Your card for the month: 8 of Swords Trapped, Powerless Surrounded by obstacles and threats on all sides, you find yourself the victim. You see no way out, no available choices. Your perceptions keep you from opening your wings and taking flight. What keeps you suspended here? Yourself or others? The Eight of Swords demands an answer. You cannot hang here much longer.

Greenwashing In A Global Climate Crisis
By Victoria Figueiredo
Do you consider yourself to be an environmentally conscious person? Most of us do! As this Earth-friendly mentality becomes more encouraged and commonplace, it should come as no surprise that companies and corporations have been shifting their advertising campaigns and product imagery to reflect the ethos of their consumer base. This is often really good news - meat alternatives are now de rigueur menu options at most fast food establishments, products are being manufactured with less waste or with better ingredients, water bottle refill stations are available left and right, and paper or compostable straws are more readily available than their plastic ancestors. All these efforts should be applauded and celebrated, but only if they’re legit. Why wouldn’t they be?
Welcome to the awful wide world of greenwashing, defined as “disinformation disseminated by an organization so as to present an environmentally responsible public image.” All sorts of brands like Coca Cola, Unilever, Seventh Generation, and Burger King have had class-action lawsuits filed against them over claims of misrepresentation and overinflation of their environmental efforts (Truth in Advertising, 2022).
It’s not just large corporations that are putting on a friendly face to cover up their lack of serious environmental commitments either - construction companies that build in fragile ecosystems using “sustainable” materials, employers that promise carbon emission offset efforts without transparency on how those goals are being achieved, and small brands that offer “greener” alternatives to staple products without addressing excess plastic packaging, the source of their ingredients, actual demand, or the effect of consumerism on the environment are all equally guilty of talking the talk without walking the walk.
Here’s how you can assess whether your own efforts toward finding climate-friendly lifestyle solutions are actually contributing to a sustainable future or if you’ve accidentally fallen into the trap of greenwashed consumerism (and save yourself some money while you’re at it):
Don’t judge a book by its cover
Much as we would love to walk around the grocery store grabbing anything wrapped in brown paper, claiming to be plastic-free, or available in unconventional packaging and call it a day, relying on packaging or advertisements as your main source of guidance when it comes to choosing less wasteful options just isn’t the best way to go. Glass is harder to recycle than metal, cellophane wrappers still count as plastic packaging, and “clean” or “green” labels are often disguising some pretty dirty and ungreen ingredients.
One culprit of greenwashed packaging that tends to upset people is Mrs. Meyers Clean Day! Only a few Mrs. Meyers products are rated above a “C” on the Environmental Working Group website, a third party organization aimed at demystifying ingredient lists as they relate to the environment and your health. This means that a brand commonly advertised as being derived from natural ingredients is actually quite the opposite - kind of shady, Mrs. Meyers! All you can do is take time to educate yourself about the recycling process, the life cycle of the products you buy regularly, and do research on which brands are actually living up to their Instagram ads. Shop smart and don’t be fooled by claims that aren’t quite true after all.
2. Ask yourself if the “green” alternative you’re considering is actually necessary
It’s always tempting to purchase something branded as being environmentally conscious - that cute aluminum bento box, the purse-sized set of travel cutlery in the handy little case, sparkly glass food storage containers… by and large, new things are exciting! But before you take your new eco-friendly purchase to the register, ask yourself whether you really need it. The bento box and glass containers are great, look neat, and advertise your planet ally status to everyone you eat lunch with, but what about all those plastic tupperwares, rinsed out jars, and recycled takeout containers that are already in your cabinets at home? What about the metal cutlery you have in your drawer? Can’t that go in your lunch box?
Instead of creating waste by tossing your old containers in favor of glossy new ones, consider the fact that you’re actually working against your own ideology by buying something you already own just because it’s been marketed as “better” for the environment. The things you already have, plastic included, are always the best option when it comes to reducing waste and plastic use. Are they fresh and exciting? Maybe not! Are they stained from years of use? Sure, but they’re still going strong! Until your existing items are worn out or rendered totally unusable, steer clear of buying items that share a purpose with what you’ve got at home. If you do this often enough, the rose colored glasses will eventually fall off and you’ll be able to detect other insidious products trying to worm their way into your life in an eco-conscious costume.
3. Break the cycle of fast fashion
The fashion industry has a real nasty habit of overusing water, dumping excess dye into the ocean, underpaying production workers, and manufacturing excess garments that will never be purchased, worn, or donated (Princeton Press, 2020). The next time you find yourself at the mall, take a look around and question whether it’s possible for a brand to produce everything in their store sustainably and still offer those low prices they love to advertise. Plain logic will tell you that the answer is a hard no.
The best way to rail against this kind of blatant capitalistic self-interest is to (you guessed it) not shop from those stores! Vote with your dollar and shop from small brands that are transparent about their sustainability practices, buy second hand, or don’t buy at all - trends will come and go, but we’ve only got the one planet. The same practice suggested for when you’re craving new green accessories applies here - the most earth-friendly thing you can do is to use what you have until it is truly worn out. Get creative, learn to alter your garments, experiment with new combinations you hadn’t considered, or even break them down into something new! Once your current garments are threadbare and busted, go ahead and replace them with something produced ethically or with something that’s been pre-loved for you. You’ll be doing the world a big favor.
4. Familiarize yourself with the lingo
All of this information can be overwhelming to take in. To simplify your life, just keep an eye out for the totally unregulated buzzwords companies love to slap on a label to make it seem better: Vegan, Green, Eco-friendly, Non-toxic, Cruelty Free, Natural, Hypoallergenic, and Free of… (parabens, preservatives, aluminum, what have you). If these words would normally make you toss a product in your cart no questions asked, pause and take a look at the label to see if someone is trying to pull the wool over your eyes.
This may sound like a tin-foil hat suggestion, but it really only takes a few seconds to scan an ingredient list for anything that seems at odds with the claims being made on the packaging. If you’re looking for an even quicker way to figure out if you’re being lied to, just pop the product name into the search bar of the EWG website - they do the work for you by assigning letter grades to every product under the sun!
5. Don’t rage quit
Sometimes it feels like the odds are stacked against us, or like the world is going to hell in a flaming handbasket, so why shouldn’t you just buy the geranium scented cleaning spray you like, ingredients be damned? While there’s no way for anyone to predict the future for civilization at large, you can always feel good about doing your own part in the fight against climate change. You don’t have to do everything perfectly to be a good ally to the planet! Plenty of us have to weigh out cost vs benefit when it comes to the efforts we make in our personal lives.
For example, we might not all make enough money to buy all-organic, locally grown produce and go completely vegan for the environment, but we can certainly all try out Meatless Mondays. Don’t despair just because you’re facing this list of tricks you may have fallen for - the fact that you care enough to learn is awesome all on its own!
Conclusion: It’s a gross, weird time we’re living in. Hold yourself and those around you accountable for the choices you make, question the sustainability practices that are mentioned in advertisements, at work, or out in the world. Dig deeper to find out whether your ethics and values really do align with the things you own, buy, and contribute to. There are so many options out there when it comes to lending a helping hand to the environment - unmasking and avoiding the companies that greenwash is just one way to do it!
