Josh Homme / Apocalypse Soon

August 2017. Queens of the Stoneage Frontmann Josh Homme sitzt anlässlich des bald erscheinenden Albums "Villains" in seinem Studiokomplex "Pink Duck". Sein Gegenüber: Beats 1 Moderator Zane Lowe. Das entspannte Gespräch dreht sich um das das neue Album, Iggy Pop und um den Rückzug des Musikers nach Palm Desert und den Ort, wo für Josh Homme alles begann - die Wüste.

L: "Du hast Familie hier, deine Kinder gehen hier zur Schule aber ich habe das Gefühl, das du die Wüste immer griffbereit haben musst."

H: "(...) Als ich zurückgezogen bin dachte ich, naja - wenn's mit allem zu Ende geht kenne ich hier wenigstens alle Straßen (...)."

L: "Wenn DU dich auf die Apokalypse vorbereitest sind wir ALLE am Ar**h."

H: "Hey Mann, Ich bin bis an die Zähne mit Dosenfutter bewaffnet...und halt bis an die Zähne bewaffnet."

Hört man solche Dialoge, verstärkt sich mein Gefühl als habe der Musiker immer einen Blick im Rückspiegel, ein Auge zur Tür hin, den Teufel im Nacken. Wie treffend, das genau dieses Bild illustriert wurde um das Album "Villains" zu bebildern. "Mach weiter, mach noch ein Album, komm schon!", so mag er ihm zuflüstern.

Was auch immer es ist, was Joshua Michael Homme da antreibt, er hat es früh entdeckt. Wächst man in der Einöde von Joshua Tree mit einer Vorliebe für Punk und Heavy Metal auf, bleibt einem als Teenager wahrscheinlich auch nicht so viel was man so tun kann. So ist die erste Band schnellt gegründet. Mit grade mal 14 Jahre auf dem Buckel leiht man sich einen Generator, fährt in die Wüste, nimmt Drogen und spielt. Und spielt. Und spielt. Aus dem tollen Bandnamen "Katzenjammer" wird "Sons of Kyuss" wird "Kyuss". Tiefe Gitarrensounds und psychadelic Einflüsse erklingen zum ersten Mal in der Einöde - die Wörter Stoner- und Desert Rock fallen wohl nicht zum letzten mal. Nach drei Alben ist das Thema Kyuss allerdings erst einmal abehakt. Man sucht und findet sich weiter, in anderen Bands wird Homme als Guitarrist aber auch nicht wirklich glücklich. Als in der neuen Formation "Gamma Ray" keiner zum Mikro greifen will macht's Josh dann einfach selbst.

"God, you sound like the Queens of the Stone Age," freut sich Produzent Chris Goss bei einer Aufnahmesession. Das können alle Bandmitglieder unterschreiben und behalten den dämlichen Kommentar einfach als grandiosen Bandnamen. Es folgen Alben an den Spitzen der Charts, Welttourneen und ausverkaufte Hallen. Aus dem Ärmel schüttelt Mr.Homme noch Zeit für die Gründung von Bands wie den Eagles of Death Metal oder der Supergruppe "Them Crooked Vultures". John Paul Jones von Led Zeppelin, Dave Grohl von den Foo Fighters und Homme geben sich die Ehre. Neben Queens of the Stoneageproben trifft man sich aber auch gerne mal mit befreundeten Musikern zu "Desert Sessions" und jammt was das Zeug hält. So entstehen ganze 10 Folgen der einzigartigen Live Aufnahmen. Obendrein lässt der Queens Sänger es sich aber nicht nehmen auch noch für andere zu produzieren: Nebenbei ein Arctic Monkeys Album und die Platte von Ehefrau Brody Dalle macht sich halt auch nicht von alleine.

Die Apokalypse könnte ja bald kommen.

Vielleicht gönnt sich Josh Homme ja auch irgendwann mal etwas Ruhe. Wenn nicht gibt's halt weiter so herrliche, Energie geladene Musik. Ich kann damit ganz gut leben. Und wenn der Mad Max Showdown dann läuft fahre ich hoffentlich hinter Josh Homme und Brody Dale.

Man. Everything Frank Ocean is putting out is KILLING me! Loved the Blonde Album, especially “Segfried”. I have never ever heard a song which has such a specific atmosphere. Closing my eyes i can actually imagine a music video so well. Brilliant sound design. Loved “Solo” as well. And when “Slide” came out with Calvin Harris - oh man. When he starts singing that first part - he’s just killing it. Few weeks ago i heard “Chanel” on Benji B’s. Are you kidding me? So brilliant. The rythm he uses for his singing, the piano chords, the lower bitrate on the drums (i think) - giving me goosebumps. Tried a bit of a new style here. Lots of halftone textures and even more flashing colors.
