Ok I’ve come up with my own timeline following Gortash's memoirs but take this with a grain of salt bc I made a lot of assumptions:

Gortash acquaints himself w/ Durge; they go on a heist in the HoW each for their own reasons (the HoW makes machinery, so Gortash probably went to steal stuff for the Steel Watch. No clue why Durge would want to go aside from possible murder)

Gortash explains his plans for a Steel Watch which would allow him full surveillance and control over the city, thus allowing both of their cults to expand undetected (their common goal?). Durge allies so the Bhaalists have his protection, while Gortash allies so he has their skills as an assassin

Gortash begins planning to steal the crown in secret; all he knows is that the crown is powerful and worth having for his tyranny. The dead three can foresee the crown’s potential and decide to ally with each other, then name their chosen and tell them to do the same

While visiting Ketheric, Gortash learns of the mind flayer colony and decides that the elder brain is the prime target to use the crown on. He still does not know of the Accelerated Grand Design, but does know that the elder brain is able to communicate telepathically with nearby creatures and harbors the ideas/knowledge of all the mind flayers it consumes. So, his plan at this point was probably to strengthen the brain and use its powers to gain more knowledge for himself and manipulate nearby people. When he is ready, he can use it to begin a reign of terror and take over the Sword Coast

Gortash tells Durge his plans for the crown and they steal it together. While doing so, Gortash learns of the Accelerated Grand Design and alters his plans to begin a religious hoax instead

So basically I think Gortash knew of the crown from the start, but kept altering his plans for it as he learned more. He initially began planning the heist just so he could have it available to use on someone (perhaps Duke Ravengard so he could become Archduke and work his way up from there?), but then the Dead Three intervened and rerouted him to Moonrise so he could learn of the elder brain and eventually form the whole religious hoax instead.

The part I’m least sure about is when/how the dead three naming their chosen fits into everything. Gortash’s memoirs say it happened before he learned of the elder brain, so I question why the dead three would make an alliance (and tell their chosen to ally as well) before Gortash even had a good plan for the crown in place. I’m just assuming they did it to guide him towards the elder brain so he would eventually come up with a good plan that benefits all of them lol.

(My favorite part about this timeline is how visiting Ketheric is essentially what led to Gortash coming up with a good plan for the crown, but then he completely forgoes telling Ketheric about it and instead starts writing to Durge LMAO like. Bane personally told you to work together with both of them but you're only sending letters to your heist partner. Only telling them about your plans to rule together. Can you be any more obvious sir)

Of course, this is all speculation based solely off these three texts, so I could be wrong about a lot of it.

question about durge + gortash canon timeline..........if anyone has any answers id appreciate them

this question has been bugging me forever and that is: in what order was the plan for the absolute hoax devised?

Gortash's memoirs make it seem like they came up with the plan BEFORE stealing the crown, but other evidence makes it seem like Durge and Gortash "came up with the idea" after discovering the plan hidden in the vault of Mephistopheles.

Given that Gortash has somewhat of a propensity for stealing other people's ideas and passing them off as his own (see: the steel watch) I think it's very possible that he's just lying in his memoirs?

So, in my brain the order was:

durge + gortash come up with the idea to steal the crown, but don't really know what they're going to use it for (I assume Gortash heard about it from his time in the house of hope)

Bhaal and Bane hear about this plan, decide to make those two their chosen, ask them to bring Ketheric into the plot

durge + gortash go on their heist, discover the accelerated grand design idea

then find out about the mind flayer colony and implement the accelerated grand design?

Or I guess its possible that Gortash/Durge had a plan to use the crown on the elder brain all along, but didn't have the idea for the tadpoling until reading Blue Apex's plan?

not enough people talking about this letter from Gortash. almost every line feels like a literary vine boom that makes your jaw drop just a little further. i know this is supposed to be an act of manipulation for more weapon distribution but so many of these lines and word choices are still just. so unnecessary. why did he decide that leaning into homosexuality was the way to go
