Back in Spain! Today in Granada for my first drawing day. I foolishly thought February was off-season enough to easily visit the Alhambra , but the first tickets available are six weeks away! I arrived in Madrid a couple days ago and then spent my first day and a half in Granada retching from food poisoning! But now the worst is over…… various ink pens and Pitt markers in a 5 x 8“ Moleskine Cahier notebook.

Throwback from my 2022 Spanish trip on the Camino de Santiago. This is Los Arcos, Spain. I suspect this view has been essentially unchanged for hundreds of years. I just booked my tickets to Spain for February, so I should have lots of new Spanish sketches and studies soon! 8 x 12” or 20 x 30 cm, oil on paper.

A little snowy gouache study ( with just a little colored pencil… ) Couldn’t resist these salt and pepper shakers which have been sitting on a high shelf for the last few years… 7 x 10” or 15 x 20 cm., gouache on paper.

A throwback to my Camino de Santiago adventures, painted on location in Larrasoana,Spain, in the Basque region. This town is in the foothills of the Pyrenees mountains, one of the first places you stop if you start the Camino France from Saint Jean de Pied de Port, France. This bridge is called the Puente los Bandidos, or the bridge of the bandits. This was a common place for medieval pilgrims to get robbed. It looks very romantic, although I was standing next to a huge construction dumpster and parking lot. I touched this up just a little bit in the studio and was much happier with it. 9 x 10” or 22 x 25 cm, oil on paper.

Some #autumncolors from a few weeks ago during an outing with the Pleinair Painters of Maine. I worked on it quite a bit from memory in my studio. Second picture is the location documentation. And this was my last outing before my car gave up the ghost. Cars are way too expensive right now, and I hope to spend a significant time back in the Mediterranean this year, so I’ll wait. Maybe in the future the supply chain issues will be solved and secondhand cars will become more economical. 8 x 12” or 20x30 cm. Oil on paper.

An ancient pick up truck at an old granite quarry. I actually find it easier to paint things with more solid shapes, even if it’s complicated. All those fuzzy trees and moving water are much more difficult. And apparently, the truck sat there for years in quite good condition and then last year some people vandalized it and smashed up all the windows when the quarry changed owners. 8 x 12” or 20 x 30 cm, oil on paper.

A little fall color for you at a local farmstand, @beths_farm_market . I bought some heavenly butternut squash, as well as some ornamental gourds that I hope to put in a still life. Painting till the last minute as the days get shorter. 7 x 9“ or 18 x 24 cm, oil on board.

The lighthouse at the nice State Park in Owlshead , Maine. It might just be the photo, but the process shot looks better then the second image after I got it into the studio and worked on it a little bit. It looks like I changed the shape of the lighthouse, although that definitely wasn’t a plan! The first image is darker, and has higher value contrasts. It’s always hard to judge a photo online, because different screens show a painting differently. I find it helpful to take photos of my artwork, and then use that information for touchups. Anyway, I can always bring it back. 8 x 12” or 20 x 30 cm, oil.

A plein air study of the famous #lostkitchen restaurant in Freedom, Maine. I sell a painting this size for less than you pay to have dinner there. I’m sure it’s very good. You can only get a seat here by a yearly lottery. The town is a small town in the middle of the woods, a long drive from anywhere. Originally I was planning to do a larger painting of this famous restaurant for the Waldo County habitat fundraiser I participated in last week. 9 x 10“ or 22 x 25 cm, oil. #pleinairpainting #freedommaine
